Hello and a very warm welcome to Doncaster Racecourse as we open The Betfred St Leger Festival 2025 with the ever-glamorous Ladies Day! We’re thrilled to have you join us for a day of world-class racing, fashion, and entertainment, and this year’s festival promises to be bigger and better than ever as we count down to the 250th anniversary of the first St Leger, taking place in 2026.
We’d like to thank our festival sponsor, Betfred, and today’s race sponsors: EBF, Weatherbys, Oddschecker, JHA Architecture, Yates Drywall, and Skopes.
Today’s card features eight thrilling races, including the Weatherbys Scientific Stakes, Betfred May Hill Stakes, and Betfred Park Hill Stakes, all showcasing high-quality racing talent. To get expert insight into today’s action, head to the Parade Ring at 12:45pm, where raceday presenter Bobby Beevers, tipster Roger Hart, and a Betfred representative will preview the day’s races and share their top tips.
Ladies Day wouldn’t be complete without our iconic Style Awards, which anyone can enter for the chance to win an incredible prize package, including a £1,000 Meadowhall gift voucher, four tickets to next year’s Betfred St Leger Ladies Day, a bottle of champagne, and a beautiful floral bouquet. To enter, simply visit the Flower Wall opposite the Parade Ring in the Grandstand Enclosure between 11:15am and 3:00pm to have your photo taken. Finalists will be contacted at 3:30pm, and the final judging takes place in the Parade Ring at 4:20pm with ITV Racing presenter Natalie Green and representatives from our 2025 Style Awards sponsor, Meadowhall.
There’s plenty more to enjoy throughout the day, including a pianist performing in the Main Reception at intervals, a roaming brass band, and former boxing World Champion Johnny Nelson MBE will be meeting and mingling with racegoers.
Over in the County Enclosure, we’re turning up the energy with our brand-new Party Enclosure. Explore the Stable Yard Party Barn, grab a drink at the St Leger Tavern, enjoy a bite from our street food stalls, and snap a keepsake at the 360-degree photo booth. After racing, the celebrations continue on the Champagne Lawn as style icon Gok Wan MBE brings the festival vibes with an upbeat DJ set Guests in the Grandstand or Family Enclosures can upgrade their tickets to join the party.

On duty today we also have a dedicated and experienced team of highly-qualified Vets, Doctors and Paramedics following the action at every stage. Their key responsibility is to monitor and provide care to the competitors throughout their time at the racecourse. The locations and vehicle movements of these skilled specialists during racing are designed to provide a rapid response to any incident across the site. We also have a high-specification horse ambulance in attendance at every fixture to enable safe transport of a horse from the track to our on-site veterinary treatment facility for further treatment, or to the nearest equine referral hospital.
It is our standard practice to erect screens around any horse or jockey requiring attention on the course as this provides privacy and a safe, calm environment in which to accurately diagnose and treat the patient as necessary. Please do not assume the worst if screens are erected around a horse. We are fully committed to minimizing risk in our sport, to dealing professionally and efficiently with any injury, and to maintaining the highest possible quality of care for the horses and jockeys racing here today. Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race.
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope.
HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.
A BEGINNER’S GUIDE TO RACING
Allowance The weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience
Amateur (Rider) on racecards, their names are usually prefixed by Mr, Mrs, etc. to indicate their amateur license-holder status.
Apprentice A trainee Flat jockey connected to the stable of a licensed trainer. Apprentices have a weight allowance when they ride in races against professional jockeys and can compete for the annual Apprentice title, given to the winner of the most races during the season.
Bar Term used when describing bookmakers’ prices. e.g. ‘4-1 bar two’ means that you can obtain at least 4-1 about any horse except for the first two in betting.
Bit Metal part of the bridle that sits in a horse’s mouth. The reins are then attached to the bit and used by the jockey to control the horse
Blinkers A form of headgear worn by the horse, consisting of a hood with cups around the eyes They are used to limit a horse’s vision and reduce distractions, with the aim of making it concentrate.
Cheekpieces Strips of sheepskin that are attached to the side of a horse’s bridle They partially obscure a horse’s rear vision, with the aim of getting the horse to concentrate on racing.
Clerk of the Course Racecourse official responsible for the overall racecourse management, including the preparation of the racing surface.
Clerk of the Scales Racecourse official whose chief duty is to weigh the riders before and after a race to ensure proper weight is carried.
Colours Jacket (‘silks’) worn by jockey to identify a horse A horse runs in its owner’s colours which are registered with Weatherbys The colours to be worn by each jockey are shown on racecards.
Colt Male, ungelded horse, up to four years old
Conditions race A race in which horses are allotted extra weight according to factors including sex, age, whether they are a previous winner etc. This is a better-class race for horses just below Group or Listed level.
Connections The owner and trainer of a racehorse
Distance The length of a race
Dam Mother of a horse.
Draw A horse’s starting position in the stalls allotted in races on the Flat. Stall numbers are drawn at random by Weatherbys (except in a handful of top races that allow each horse’s connections, having been randomly selected, to choose the stall number for their horse). A horse with a seemingly advantageous draw is said to be “well drawn”. Stalls are used for Flat racing only.
Filly Female horse four-years-old or younger.
Foal Horse of either sex from its birth until 1 January the following year
Furlong 220 yards (one eighth of a mile). The numbered posts on British racecourses count the furlongs back from the winning post.
Gelding Castrated horse
Going Description of the course conditions under foot.
Hand Unit of four inches in which a horse’s height is measured at the shoulder
Judge Official responsible for declaring the finishing order and distances between horses.
Juvenile Two-year old horse
Maiden Horse which has not yet won a race
Handicap A race where each horse is allotted a different weight to carry, according to the official handicap ratings determined by the BHA Handicappers. The theory is that all horses run on a fair and equal basis - the ‘perfect’ handicap being one where all the runners finish in a dead-heat.
Mare Female horse aged five years old or above
Middle Distances On the Flat, races beyond a mile and up to 1m6f are the middle distances. A middledistance horse is one that runs mainly over such distances or is regarded as being suitable for those distances.
Penalty Weight added to the handicap weight of a horse which has won since the weights were published.
Photo Finish Electronic photo device which determines minimal distance in a close finish.
Racecard The runners and riders of the day within this raceday programme.
Rating A measure of the ability of a horse on a scale starting at zero and going into three figures Flat and Jump racing use different scales; the highest-rated Flat horse is usually in the 130s and the top-rated jumper in the 180s.
Schooled Trained to jump.
Sire Father of a horse.
Sprint races Flat races run over a distance of five or six furlongs.
Stewards Enquiry Enquiry by a panel of men and women responsible for seeing rules are adhered to into a race’s running.
Tongue Tie Strip of material tied around a horse’s tongue and lower jaw to keep it from swallowing its tongue, which can clog its air passage. A horse wearing a tongue tie is denoted on a racecard by a small t next to the horse’s weight (t1 indicates that the horse is wearing a tongue tie in a race for the first time)
Under Starter’s Orders Occurs when the race is about to start
Visor Similar to blinkers, but with a slit in each eye cup to allow some lateral vision. A horse wearing a visor is denoted on a racecard by a small v next to the horse’s weight (v1 indicates that the horse is wearing a visor in a race for the first time).
Weighing In/Out Each jockey (wearing his racing kit and carrying his saddle) must stand on official weighing scales before and after the race, so that the Clerk of the Scales can check that the jockey is carrying the correct weight allotted to his horse If a jockey is above the allotted weight before the race, his horse can still compete but must carry overweight. When the weights carried by the winner and placed horses have been verified after the race, there will be an announcement that they have ‘weighed in’. This confirms the race result and at this point bookmakers will pay out on successful bets.
Yearling Horse of either sex from 1 January to 31 December of the year following its birth.

WHAT’S YOUR JOB TITLE, AND WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE INVOLVE AT THE RACECOURSE?
My job title is Group Head of Catering and Events for Arena Racing Company. My role is to support the catering and events team at each course
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PART OF THE DONCASTER TEAM?
I have been with the business now for nearly five years.
WHAT DID YOU DO FOR WORK BEFORE JOINING DONCASTER RACECOURSES?
Before joining Arena Racing Company, I served as Operations Director for Levy UK, which included catering and event operations for four Premier League football clubs and two Premier League rugby clubs.
HOW MANY ST LEGER FESTIVALS HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN?
This will be my fifth Leger now.
WHICH DAY OF THE ST LEGER FESTIVAL IS YOUR FAVOURITE, AND WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL FOR YOU?
One of the most rewarding experiences in my role is being part of the Betfred St Leger Festival on Saturday. It’s an event that requires a full year of planning, and what makes it truly special is the incredible teamwork that goes into delivering it.
WHAT’S A TYPICAL ST LEGER WEEK LIKE FOR YOU?
The build-up to the Betfred St Leger Festival is always exciting - there are so many moving parts that need to come together, and it’s the strength of the team that makes it happen.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE ST LEGER MEMORY OR A STORY YOU LOVE TO TELL?
In 2023, I accompanied one of our longest-serving members, Libby Scruton to be presented to His Majesty the King after her 50th St Leger Festival - an amazing milestone and a privilege I’ll always cherish.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE COLOUR WHEN IT COMES TO JOCKEYS’ SILKS?
I don’t know if I have a single favourite colour when it comes to jockeys’ silks, but I do appreciate the bold, vibrant designs that stand out in the parade ring and on the track.
WHAT IS YOUR ALL-TIME FAVOURITE FILM?
It’s hard to choose between them, but my all-time favourite films are Mrs. Doubtfire and Forrest Gump.

Advertise filly Calendar Girl sneaks in here right at the bottom of the weights, and the impressive Newbury maiden winner receives weight all round. Owen Burrows’ filly was unlucky not to remain unbeaten when conceding first run at Epsom last time and has the perfect profileforthisrace.
AndrewBaldinghasafinerecentrecord inthecontest, landingthespoilstwicein thelastsixyears, andhisRisingEmpire arrives here fresher than most on the back of a break. A Windsor maiden winner, his debut form behind Group 2 winner Coppull reads well as does his staying-onfifthintheWoodcoteStakes. Karl Burke landed the spoils with Cold Casein2022andreliesonBushwacker here. The Supremacy colt remains a maiden but continues to improve with every start and was just narrowly denied by a progressive rival last time. The trainer reaches for first-time cheekpieces.

HORSE WELFARE COMES FIRST AT DONCASTER
At every race meeting at Doncaster our top priority is the safety and welfare of both horse and rider We have a dedicated team of highly qualified vets and doctors following the action at all times and a horse ambulance in attendance at every meeting.
Use of Screens
It is our policy to erect green screens around any horse requiring veterinary attention. This does NOT reflect the severity of any injury, but does help to provide a calm environment, in which the vet is better able to treat the horse.
Please do not assume the worst if you see screens erected around a fallen horse!
MAY HILL STAKES
ES ILL
The May Hill Stakes is a Group 2 race for two-year-old fillies, run over a mile. This year marks the 48th edition of the race since its debut in 1976. Named after the Peter Walwyn-trained filly May Hill, who won the Park Hill Stakes at Doncaster in 1975, the race was originally classified as Group 3 before being upgraded to Group 2 status in 2003.
The legendary Sir Henry Cecil remains the most successful trainer in the race’s history, with an impressive 12 victories, including wins with Reams Of Verse (1996) and Half Glance (2001).
In more recent years, John Gosden has emerged as the dominant force, adding six wins to his record in the May Hill Stakes
Among jockeys, none has matched the success of Frankie Dettori, who boasts six wins in the race One of his most notable came aboard Inspiral in 2021, who followed up her Town Moor victory with a triumph in the Fillies’ Mile (G1). Inspiral, owned by Cheveley Park Stud, is one of several May Hill winners to go on to greater success at the top level.
Irish-trained fillies have claimed victory just three times in the past two decades: Agnes Stewart (2014), Turret Rocks (2015), and Fleeting (2018), the latter providing Aidan O’Brien with his sole success in this race to date.
The fastest recorded time in the May Hill Stakes belongs to Playful Act, who clocked 1:35.40 over the mile in 2004 under jockey Jimmy Fortune.
Last year, subsequent 1000 Guineas winner Desert Flower maintained her unbeaten record in this contest in some style to give her trainer Charlie Appleby a first win in the May Hill Stakes This was surprisingly the first May Hill winner owned by Godolphin since Ihtimal in 2013.
