Virgin Bet Grimthorpe Chase Raceday Preview
13:30
The opening race on the card and a short price favourite in QUEENSBURY BOY must surely take all the beating on his hurdles debut. A runner up on his last start in Ireland to a well-regarded Gorden Elliott Cheltenham bound runner His trainer Harry Derham is bound to have him spot on for this and will be ridden by his owner David Maxwell. Bold Reaction has the form figures to fill the places once again but will be better off once returned to handicap company.
14:05
Another short price favourite beckons in this Listed Hurdle in the form of the Irish challenger WORLD OF FORTUNES Swimming in much calmer waters today compared to the Grade 1 she contested last time out at the Dublin Racing Festival. Clear on the ratings she is sure to run a huge race An each-way alternative in Miss Cynthia may well be the answer here, on her last flat run for Sir Mark Prescott she was taking on Kyprios in France. Now in the capable hands of Lucy Wadham she is taken to improve one again for the step up in class.
14:40
The likely favourite Petit Tonnerre did not look the likely winner last time out over today’s course and distance, but off a low mark and improved form got the job done late on. At a bigger price CALICO might be the answer here, he ran behind Petit Tonnerre last time but was off the bridle far too early If some of that energy can be conserved, he may well be a danger to all.
15:15
This year’s Grimthorpe looks thoroughly competitive at 5/1 the field, currently one extra place is available (1/5 4 places). Last year’s beaten favourite (3/1) Some Scope lines up again, a few jumping errors late on probably cost him dear last year, this target has clearly been in the mind of connections and surely must run well once again. Hymac is clearly an improving type and form figures show he is also very consistent, you can never rule out his trainer Harry Fry in a top draw handicap One at a bigger price is ERNE RIVER, who looked to be coming back to form in last month’s Great Yorkshire Chase He clearly has a liking for Doncaster and is coming down nicely in the weights, he is well worth an eachway wager
15:55
Another competitive class 2 and CLOUD DANCER will be looking to get back to winning ways on return to Doncaster, winning well here over the same distance in December. PRETENDING comes here today in relatively decent form and with Gavin Sheehan on board, connections will be hoping the step up in trip will prove fruitful.
16:31
CUBAN COURT will be very familiar with this track having been a regular of late, winning over the same C&D late December and narrowly finishing 3rd on Jan 24th, albeit over an extra 3f in which he faded away, so this slight drop in distance could benefit. Unleash The Beast makes the trip north after the Fergal O’Brien trained 6yo ran out a close 2nd in Southwell earlier this month, even with some rather unconvincing jumping over the last 2 hurdles, should still be considered.
17:07
This tightly contested handicap wraps up the day’s action over 2m 128y and BLUEGRASS comes into this contest, it could be argued, in the best form with two recent victories at the end of last year and despite a blip on new year’s day, will be looking to get back to winning ways. Norn Iron ran well in mid-January at Newbury and will be in the hunt alongside Kingston James, who should both revel the prospect of picking up the gold medal on this ground.
Hello and welcome to Doncaster Racecourse for the Grimthorpe Chase. We are delighted you’ve joined us here today and we would like to thank our sponsor Virgin bet and Live Score Bet for their generous support of today’s fixture.
There are 7 races on the card and our raceday presenter Bobby Beevers, Virgin Bet representative Tom Earl and resident tipster Roger Hart will be in the Parade Ring at around 1:00pm to run through the racecard with you and hopefully pick you out some winners!
The feature race today is the Grimthorpe Chase at 3:15pm, which last year was won by Does He Know, ridden by David Bass and trained by Kim Bailey The Grimthorpe Chase is a National Hunt steeplechase that is run at Doncaster each year and contains 19 jump fences The distance has varied over time, but currently sits at a little over 3 miles and 2 furlongs Considered the ultimate endurance test, this race is seen as a trial for the Aintree Grand National in April, as many winners (such as The Last Samuri and Definitely Red) have gone on to be favourites in the Merseyside race
Join us on Friday 14th March and experience all the thrills of Cheltenham – without the price tag! This is the last jumps fixture at Town Moor and we’ll be showing the Cheltenham Festival live on our screens
The day will also feature an Irish twist with dancers from Nadine Martin Academy of Irish Dancing entertaining you throughout the day.
On Saturday 29th March, Doncaster Racecourse officially opens the British Turf Flat racing season with the William Hill Lincoln meeting. Our Lincoln Family Fun Day is on Sunday 30th March and will include free entertainment and activities for the whole family including a circus workshop, character appearances, Shetland pony racing, a magician, a colouring station, a reading corner and much more! 2025 Annual Memberships are now on sale and offers entry to 500+ fixtures across Arena Racing Company racecourses, four free guest passes, four free racecards, auto-enrolment into the ARC Racing Club for a taste of racehorse ownership, access to attend a variety of reciprocal fixtures and events, plus much more. Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

Plenty of dead wood in this opening maiden and it could be best left to QUEENSBURY BOY, who confirmed himself an above-average prospect when finishing runner-up in a Punchestown bumper 10 months ago and rates as a good-quality recruit to hurdling for a yard really clicking into gear. Bold Reaction heads up the dangers after his third over C&D 5 weeks ago, with Icare Colombe and Doctor Kildare taken to fight out third.
