Hello and welcome to Doncaster Racecourse for the highlight of the four-day Betfred St Leger Festival - Betfred St Leger Day! We are delighted you’ve joined us here today and would like to thank our festival sponsor Betfred and our race sponsors PJ Towey Construction, British EBF and Arabian Racing Organisation for their support of today’s fixture.
Our raceday presenter Bobby Beevers, resident tipster Roger Hart and a Betfred representative will be in the Parade Ring at around 12:45 to run through the racecard and hopefully help you pick some winners!
There are eight races on the card including the 249th running of Britain’s oldest classic -the Group 1 Betfred St Leger Stakes A historic race which dates back to 1776, it is the most prestigious race in the Doncaster Racecourse Calendar and is the highlight of our racing year. Last year saw Aidan O’Brien triumph with Jan Brueghel, ridden by Sean Levey, prevailing by a neck in a thrilling finish to give O’Brien his 8th victory in the race
As befits the final Classic of the season, expect a thrilling renewal of this great race before we crown the winner. We then race towards history as 2026 marks the 250th Anniversary of the first running of the St Leger Stakes, and a celebration of everything that this great city and race meeting has seen over the years. A series of events are planned in the buildup to next year’s race which will be an historic landmark in Doncaster’s great history.
Guests can also enjoy 50% off all draught drinks, plus £10 off bottles of House Wine, Prosecco, Champagne and Pimms Jugs for the first 90 minutes after gates open today - and 60 minutes after gates open on Sunday. Allowance The weight concession the horse is given to compensate for its rider’s inexperience
Amateur (Rider) on racecards, their names are usually prefixed by Mr, Mrs, etc. to indicate their amateur license-holder status.
Apprentice A trainee Flat jockey connected to the stable of a licensed trainer. Apprentices have a weight allowance when they ride in races against professional jockeys and can compete for the annual Apprentice title, given to the winner of the most races during the season.
Bar Term used when describing bookmakers’ prices. e.g. ‘4-1 bar two’ means that you can obtain at least 4-1 about any horse except for the first two in betting.
Bit Metal part of the bridle that sits in a horse’s mouth. The reins are then attached to the bit and used by the jockey to control the horse
Blinkers A form of headgear worn by the horse, consisting of a hood with cups around the eyes. They are used to limit a horse’s vision and reduce distractions, with the aim of making it concentrate.
Cheekpieces Strips of sheepskin that are attached to the side of a horse’s bridle They partially obscure a horse’s rear vision, with the aim of getting the horse to concentrate on racing.
Clerk of the Course Racecourse official responsible for the overall racecourse management, including the preparation of the racing surface.
Clerk of the Scales Racecourse official whose chief duty is to weigh the riders before and after a race to ensure proper weight is carried.
Colours Jacket (‘silks’) worn by jockey to identify a horse A horse runs in its owner’s colours which are registered with Weatherbys The colours to be worn by each jockey are shown on racecards.
Colt Male, ungelded horse, up to four years old .
Conditions race A race in which horses are allotted extra weight according to factors including sex, age, whether they are a previous winner etc. This is a better-class race for horses just below Group or Listed level.
Connections The owner and trainer of a racehorse
Distance The length of a race
Dam Mother of a horse
Draw A horse’s starting position in the stalls allotted in races on the Flat. Stall numbers are drawn at random by Weatherbys (except in a handful of top races that allow each horse’s connections, having been randomly selected, to choose the stall number for their horse). A horse with a seemingly advantageous draw is said to be “well drawn”. Stalls are used for Flat racing only.
Filly Female horse four-years-old or younger.
Foal Horse of either sex from its birth until 1 January the following year Furlong 220 yards (one eighth of a mile). The numbered posts on British racecourses count the furlongs back from the winning post.
Gelding Castrated horse
Going Description of the course conditions under foot.
Hand Unit of four inches in which a horse’s height is measured at the shoulder
Judge Official responsible for declaring the finishing order and distances between horses.
Juvenile Two-year old horse
Maiden Horse which has not yet won a race.
Handicap A race where each horse is allotted a different weight to carry, according to the official handicap ratings determined by the BHA Handicappers. The theory is that all horses run on a fair and equal basis - the ‘perfect’ handicap being one where all the runners finish in a dead-heat.
Mare Female horse aged five years old or above
Middle Distances On the Flat, races beyond a mile and up to 1m6f are the middle distances. A middle-distance horse is one that runs mainly over such distances or is regarded as being suitable for those distances.
Penalty Weight added to the handicap weight of a horse which has won since the weights were published.
Photo Finish Electronic photo device which determines minimal distance in a close finish.
Racecard The runners and riders of the day within this raceday programme.
Rating A measure of the ability of a horse on a scale starting at zero and going into three figures. Flat and Jump racing use different scales; the highestrated Flat horse is usually in the 130s and the top-rated jumper in the 180s.
Schooled Trained to jump
Sire Father of a horse
Sprint races Flat races run over a distance of five or six furlongs.
Stewards Enquiry Enquiry by a panel of men and women responsible for seeing rules are adhered to into a race’s running.
Tongue Tie Strip of material tied around a horse’s tongue and lower jaw to keep it from swallowing its tongue, which can clog its air passage. A horse wearing a tongue tie is denoted on a racecard by a small t next to the horse’s weight (t1 indicates that the horse is wearing a tongue tie in a race for the first time).
Under Starter’s Orders Occurs when the race is about to start
Visor Similar to blinkers, but with a slit in each eye cup to allow some lateral vision. A horse wearing a visor is denoted on a racecard by a small v next to the horse’s weight (v1 indicates that the horse is wearing a visor in a race for the first time).
Weighing In/Out Each jockey (wearing his racing kit and carrying his saddle) must stand on official weighing scales before and after the race, so that the Clerk of the Scales can check that the jockey is carrying the correct weight allotted to his horse. If a jockey is above the allotted weight before the race, his horse can still compete but must carry overweight. When the weights carried by the winner and placed horses have been verified after the race, there will be an announcement that they have ‘weighed in’. This confirms the race result and at this point bookmakers will pay out on successful bets.
Yearling Horse of either sex from 1 January to 31 December of the year following its birth.
The raceday programme contains information about each horse and can help you judge his or her ‘form’...

The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability.
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances).
Bay (B) – from light brown through to dark brown with black mane/tail
Chestnut (CH) – reddish with a mane/tail to match Roan (Ro) – white hairs mixed with another colour
Brown (Br) – darker than a bay with a black mane/tail
Black (Bl) – Black and rare
White (Wh) – Rare with pink skin.
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

BOBBY BEEVERS RACEDAY PRESENTER
WHAT’S YOUR JOB TITLE, AND WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE INVOLVE AT THE RACECOURSE?
I’m the Raceday Presenter at Doncaster. I start with the morning punter’s panel and present the day.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PART OF THE DONCASTER RACECOURSE TEAM?
I believe it's 10 years now. 10 wonderful, amazing years.
WHAT DID YOU DO FOR WORK BEFORE JOINING DONCASTER RACECOURSE?
I originally studied performing arts at college. Later, I worked as a Redcoat at Butlins, where I discovered that my real strength was in presenting rather than acting.
HOW MANY ST LEGER FESTIVALS HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED IN?
Twelve, this is my thirteenth.
WHICH DAY OF THE ST LEGER FESTIVAL IS YOUR FAVOURITE, AND WHAT MAKES IT SPECIAL FOR YOU?
Saturday is my favourite - it’s home to the world’s oldest Classic, the St Leger, right here in South Yorkshire
WHAT’S A TYPICAL ST LEGER WEEK LIKE FOR YOU?
By Wednesday night, I can’t sleep. I’m that excited. The Leger is like Christmas for me
The racing is top class, the atmosphere electric, and I feel lucky to be part of it.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE ST LEGER MEMORY OR A STORY YOU LOVE TO TELL?
Around 2018 or 2019, while roving reporting, I met a 91-year-old entering the Best Dressed Lady competition for the first time.
She made the final 10 and came second. I’ll never forget her beaming smile when they announced it, such a heart-warming moment.
WHAT’S THE BEST THING ABOUT WORKING AT DONCASTER RACECOURSE?
This is my favourite racecourse, and the role I have now is something I’ve dreamed of since I was a baby. Doncaster feels like a family for me, it’s one of the best racecourses in the world, and I love every day I spend here
WHICH PART OF THE RACECOURSE IS YOUR PERSONAL FAVOURITE, AND WHY?
I’d say outside the Weighing Room, because that’s where my dad’s memorial bench sits. It’s a very special spot for me, and my favourite place at the racecourse
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE COLOUR WHEN IT COMES TO JOCKEYS’ SILKS?
If it’s a winner, I like them, whether they’re blue, yellow, or anything else. Joking aside, I don’t have a specific favourite.
WHAT’S YOUR ALL-TIME FAVOURITE FILM?
Oh, that’s a tough one! I’ve always said I have two favourites, Step Brothers and Role Models.

From its humble origins in 1776 to a global celebration in 2026, the St Leger Stakes has stood the test of time. Here's how this iconic race came to define a sport, a city, and a tradition like no other.
In 1776, on the wide-open turf of Doncaster's Town Moor, a local horse race was runorganised by Lieutenant Colonel Anthony St Leger That single contest would spark a tradition that still lights up the racing calendar today.
Just four years later, it was officially named the St Leger Stakes. Over time, it became something even greater: the oldest of the five British Classics and the final leg of the Triple Crown. Unlike any other, the St Leger tests not just speed, but stamina, class, and staying power. Some of the greatest names in racing have been crowned here. From West Australian, the first Triple Crown winner in 1853, to the unforgettable Nijinsky in 1970 - the last to achieve that treble - the St Leger has produced some truly unforgettable moments.
Recent champions like Hurricane Lane (2021) and Jan Brueghel (2024) show that the race continues to attract the best of the best. For breeders, owners, jockeys and fans, a St Leger winner is a legacy-maker
The St Leger isn't just part of Doncaster - it is Doncaster. Each September, the St Leger Festival draws crowds from far and wide, filling the city with energy, colour and history. The racecourse itself has evolved, but the beating heart of the St Leger remains unchanged.
Events like Leger Legends Day celebrate racing’s rich past, while the St Leger itself serves as a grand finale to the flat season - a moment of tradition, tension, and triumph that has captivated generations.
Next year marks a truly extraordinary milestone: the 250th running of the St Leger Stakes
A quarter of a millennium of racing history will be honoured with a celebration fitting of its scale.
Expect:
• Special anniversary events throughout the year
• Historic displays and exhibitions tracing the race's origins
• Legends past and present returning to Town Moor
• Unique memorabilia and once-in-a-lifetime experiences
• A truly unmissable 2026 St Leger Festival
Whether you’re a lifelong fan or making your first visit, 2026 promises to be a celebration like no other - a true meeting of past, present and future.
The St Leger has never lost its place as a national treasure. It’s more than just the world’s oldest Classic - it’s a symbol of endurance, excellence, and everything we love about the sport of Kings.
As the countdown to 250 begins, one thing is certain: next year, all roads lead to Doncaster.

The Champagne Stakes is a Group 2 race for two-year-old colts and geldings, contested over 7 furlongs. First established in 1823, the race has undergone several changes throughout its history. Originally run over 1 mile, it was shortened to 6 furlongs in 1870, extended to 7 furlongs in 1962, and in 1988 it was restricted to male horses only.
Often viewed as a key stepping stone to the Dewhurst Stakes (G1), recent winners such as Too Darn Hot and Chaldean have both gone on to claim victory in Newmarket’s premier Group 1 race for two-year-olds following their success at Town Moor
Chaldean also made history by becoming the first horse since Rodrigo De Triano to win the Champagne Stakes as a two-yearold before going on to win the 2000 Guineas at three.
The roll call of top-class colts to have triumphed in the Champagne Stakes is extensive, spanning from Grundy in 1974 to more recent stars like Toronado (2012), Too Darn Hot (2018) and Chaldean (2022).
John Scott and Mathew Dawson share the distinction of being the race’s leading trainers, each with 10 wins - a record unlikely to be challenged anytime soon. However, Richard Hannon Jr has made a strong impact in recent years, winning two renewals in the last decade. Impressively, all six of Hannon’s runners in the race have either won or finished placed.
There have been just four winning favourites of the Champagne Stakes since 2015. None of the last 10 winners were sent off at bigger than 8/1 so it is wise to stick with those towards the front of the betting.

Race Summary:
While 3-y-os do not possess a great recent record in this race, ADDISON GREY did the job in the manner of a sprinter on a steep upward curve at Newmarket and he is taken to emulate 2019 winner Oxted, who is the only 3-y-o to land the Portland since 2001. There are dangers pretty much everywhere you look, with Jordan Electrics, who caught the eye at York last time, and Air Force One both greatly respected. The hat-trick seeking Eternal Sunshine, Trefor and Venture Capital are others to consider 1-2-3: 1.ADDISON GREY 2.JORDAN ELECTRICS 3.AIR FORCE ONE (IRE)

The Park Stakes is a Group 2 race run over 7 furlongs and stands one of the key races during the Betfred St Leger Festival. First intr in 1978 as a Listed race, it was upgraded to Group 3 status in 1986 the distance was extended to a mile. The race reverted to its curr 7-furlong trip in 2003 and was subsequently promoted to Group in 2004. It is open to horses aged three and older.
Frankie Dettori is the most successful jockey in the history of the Park Stakes, having claimed five victories, including memorable wins aboard Iffraaj and Kinross.
On the training front, the legendary Sir Michael Stoute leads the way with four wins. His latest success came in 2018 with Mustashry, owned by Shadwell Estate
The fastest recorded time in the race was set by Pastoral Pursuits in 2004, who stopped the clock at 1:21.66 under jockey Steve Drowne
Historically, older horses have dominated the race, with just three three-year-olds managing to win in the past 16 years. Only four horses have secured multiple victories in the race's 45-year history: Bishop of Cashel (1995/96), Iffraaj (2005/06), Arabian Gleam (2007/08) and Kinross (2023/24).
Andrew Balding earned his first Park Stakes win in 2023 when Sandrine proved strongest over the 7 furlongs on soft ground. It also marked a second victory in the race for jockey Oisin Murphy, who previously won in 2017 aboard Aclaim

The St Leger Stakes is the standout event of the year at Doncaster Racecourse. This Group 1 race, open to three-year-old colts and fillies, covers a distance of 1 mile and 6 furlongs. Established in 1776, it holds the distinction of being Britain’s oldest and final Classic among the five prestigious Classics.
The Classics consist of the Betfred 2000 Guineas, Betfred 1000 Guineas, Betfred Oaks, Betfred Derby and the Betfred St Leger.
In 2019, Juddmonte’s Logician set a new record for the fastest winning time in the St Leger, finishing in 3:00.27. The race’s widest winning margin came in 1954 when Never Say Die surged ahead by a commanding 12 lengths.
Historically, the 19th century was dominated by trainer John Scott, who notched 16 wins, and jockey Bill Scott, with 9 victories. More recently, Aidan O’Brien has been one to watch with eight St Leger wins to his name.
One of the most memorable St Leger moments in recent history took place in 2015, involving a dramatic stewards’ enquiry between Simple Verse and Bondi Beach Although Bondi Beach, trained by Aidan O’Brien, crossed the line second, he was initially awarded the race in the stewards’ room. However, after an appeal by Simple Verse’s connections, the decision was overturned, and the Qatar Racing-owned filly was declared the winner Simple Verse joined a select group of fillies to have won the St Leger, alongside legends such as Meld (1955), Cantelo (1959), Dunfermline (1977), Sun Princess (1983), Oh So Sharp (1985), and User Friendly (1992).
The 2023 running will be remembered for years to come, as HM The King and Queen made a surprise visit to Doncaster to watch Desert Hero compete in the Betfred St Leger Stakes The day carried an added sense of occasion, with the atmosphere charged as the crowd sang the national anthem ahead of the race.
Jan Brueghel and stablemate Illinois fought out one of the best finishes to a St Leger we have ever seen last year The pair were locked together from over a furlong out, but the Sean Levey ridden Jan Brueghel just edged ahead close to the finish to win by a neck.
Since 2015, five favourites have triumphed in the St Leger, with the Irish making a strong impact - five of the last ten winners have been trained by either Aidan O’Brien or his son Joseph

T: ANDREW BALDING
J: OISIN MURPHY
Scandinavia has steadily improved this year after shedding his maiden at Navan in May. He was an emphatic winner of the Bahrain Trophy Stakes on his penultimate start before landing a first career Group 1 with a game performance in the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup Stakes Now chasing a hattrick he is bidding to hand trainer Aidan O’Brien a ninth win in the Betfred St Leger, and jockey Tom Marquand a second success in the Classic after he won it aboard Galileo Chrome in 2020 for Aidan’s son Joseph
T: AIDAN O’BRIEN
J: SEAN LEVEY
Aidan O’Brien has a strong hand in this year’s Betfred St Leger which is strengthened further by the fact his dual Derby winner Lambourn is not even favourite for this year’s contest. The son of Australia posted a disappointing effort when failing to place in Group 2 company at York last time out, but could improve for the step up to 1m6f for the first time.
T: PADDY TWOMEY
J: BILLY LEE
Paddy Twomey is one of the rising stars of the Irish training ranks and his Carmers is a live player in this Saturday’s final Classic of the flat racing season. The Royal Ascot winner lost his unbeaten record when chasing a fourth consecutive career win in the Sky Bet Great Voltigeur Stakes last time, though he lost little in defeat He retains his usual pair of blinkers and is likely to be a tough nut to crack at the head of affairs
T: AIDAN O’BRIEN
J: MICKAEL BARZALONA
The English have work to do to keep the St Leger trophy on this side of the Irish Sea, highlighted by the fact the three runners in this year’s race that are trained in this country are all priced up at double-figure odds. Andrew Balding’s Furthur arrives into this contest after a comfortable success against his elders in the Highclere Thoroughbred Racing Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury last month.
T: ANDREW BALDING
J: COLIN KEANE
Andrew Balding has never won the Betfred St Leger and the second of his two runners in this year’s contest is the hattrick seeking Tarriance After being turned over at odds-on at this track in June, the Frankel colt has recorded back-to-back wins, showing enormous grit to land the Sky Bet Melrose Handicap by the barest of margins at York Juddmonte last won the St Leger courtesy of Logician in 2019 but this does represents a steep rise in grade for Tarriance.
T: ROGER VARIAN
J: RAY DAWSON
The Betfred St Leger field of 2026 is completed by Rahiebb, owned by Sheikh Ahmed Al Maktoum. Rahiebb has found it difficult to win since his debut success in March, though he does have respectable placed form behind the likes of Merchant and Carmers. He could run into a place for his trainer Roger Varian who won the St Leger in 2022 courtesy of Eldar Eldarov
Legendary French jockey Mickael Barzalona won this ic race back in 2012 aboard Encke for Mahmood Al Zaroo gets the leg up on the Ballydoyle third-string Stay True weekend. The Galileo colt was having his first run since when beaten just over a length into fourth in the same both Lambourn and Carmers ran in at York last month. He could improve markedly for that effort and for the fact he is stepping up to this trip for the first time

Race Summary:
Aidan O’Brien holds a very strong hand in his bid to land a third successive Leger with LAMBOURN and Scandinavia both leading contenders on form. There’s little to separate them in truth, with the former earning the narrow vote given he£ s expected to bounce back to something like his Derby form, having looked and shaped as if better for the outing in the Great Voltigeur at York last time Carmers shouldn’t be at all underestimated however, especially as a return to this trip could unlock more.

The oldest Purebred Arabian classic series with 17 races scheduled across Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and the USA in 2025. The series was established by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan to promote and celebrate the Arabian horse worldwide and its significant place in UAE culture and history.
The series renewed its association with the UK Arabian Derby when it moved to Doncaster in 2016. A Group 1PA contest with prize fund of £400,000 making it the richest four year old only race in Europe. It is fitting that the oldest Purebred Arabian classic series takes place on the same day as the St Leger the world’s oldest classic for Thoroughbreds.

NUMBER OF DECLARED RUNNERS
Betting Forecast:
7/4 Lippo De Carrere, 2/1 Moneer, 5/1 Shaihaan, 6/1 Lino, 7/1 Al Theeb, 25/1 Hibikinada Du Mazet, 25/1 Mdawi, 50/1 Marakeb
Race Summary:
Most of the foreign raiders are looking to improve on their form from the blanket finish in the French equivalent at Chantilly in June, and all have form on easy ground Though both carry the second colours again, Shaihaan could settle better tried in cheekpieces, whilst Moneer is reunited with Jean Bernard Eyquem who has won on him twice. However, LIPPO DE CARRERE had to come around both Al Theeb and Moneer and though showed an excellent turn of foot, wasn’t able to make up the ground in time to peg back the winning filly. Lino didn’t warrant an entry there, but has showed up well against older horses and his jockey is the only one here to win this race (twice).
