Good Afternoon and welcome to Brighton Racecourse, for the opening day of the Star Sports Festival of Racing.
We have the fantastic jazz funk musicians the Top Bananas here today, for your entertainment, great music whilst balancing on stilts!
We are delighted to be able to support our local greyhound trust, Brighton Greyhounds, so please do go and say hello to some of our four-legged friends this afternoon by our Grandstand entrance.
Alongside all of the above, don’t forget to see the horses in the paddock before each of our six races this afternoon. Runners head to post at 15.45 for today’s feature race; the Class 4 Sapporo Japanese Lager Brighton Mile Challenge. Did you know the Brighton mile was first run in 1947, The late Queen Elizabeth won it twice in 1992 and 1993 and had the trophy displayed at Buckingham Palace.
Thank you to our Headline festival Sponsors Star Sports, once gain for their fantastic support, and to Carlsberg Britvic for their sponsorship of the Brighton Mile challenge trophy today.
Don’t forget we have music from the 90s playing for an hour and a half, after racing tomorrow, just outside the marquee.
We still have limited space in our first floor restaurant Silks today, if you fancy treating yourself, to a fabulous three course lunch, and the best views in the racecourse, please visit the racecourse reception for further details.
We hope you have a fantastic day and look forward to welcoming you back soon. We return for more racing action tomorrow, with gates open at 12.10.

KEY Owner Breeding Breeder Jockey Trainer Sponsor Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating birthplace of horse if not Great Britain

MAN OF LA MANCHA has been a hard-luck story in recent outings, shaping well again having encountering trouble at Sandown 12 days ago. He looks more than capable of winning from his current mark granted a bit more luck. Robbo returns to an ideal mile trip having won at Goodwood 61 days ago, while Enrolled is also a threat if the visor continues to have a positive effect.

RACE RESULT:
Brighton Mile Challenge Trophy
First run in 1947 and won by Admiral’s Yarn, the Brighton Mile Challenge Trophy is one of our most historic races and steeped in good stories.
The late Queen Elizabeth has twice displayed the trophy at Buckingham Palace. Her Majesty was so proud of the first victory by Talent (1992) she had it cleaned, restored and polished. Set The Fashion ensured her second victory during 1993.
Twelve months later Shikari’s Son was landing a seventh course victory when taking the prize in the hands of Richard Quinn. More recent highlights include a first ever dead heat in 2010 when the judge could not split favourite Licence To Till (Kieran Fallon) and the Hayley Turner partnered Lastkingofscotland.
Tony Carroll, so often leading trainer here, saddled four winners on the opening day of the Festival in 2015 amongst them Pyrocumulus (Jim Crowley) in the Mile. In 2019 Tony took the trophy once again when De Vegas Kid scored under Darragh Keenan
The Covex Kid, highly impressive in success in 2022 for trainer Amy Murphy, was a rare three-year-old winner A year ago the race fell the way of seven times course and distance winner Uncle Dick trained by Eve Johnson Houghton. He is back in the race again this afternoon and will face 11 rivals.
