We have the fantastic jazz funk musicians the Top Bananas here today, for your entertainment, great music whilst balancing on stilts!
We also have the fabulous Fat Boy Tim, playing after racing in front of the marquee.
Alongside all of the above, don’t forget to see the horses in the paddock before each of our six races this afternoon. Runners head to post at 15.40 for today’s feature race; the Brighton Challenge Cup. First ran in 1849 it is our most historic race.
Thank you to our Headline festival Sponsors Star Sports, once again for their fantastic support, and to the Star Sports property team for their sponsorship today.
We still have limited space in our Ladies Day marquee today, if you fancy treating yourself, to a fabulous three course lunch, with the great Dave Williams singing swing, please enquire at the race day reception.
We hope you have a fantastic day and look forward to welcoming you back soon. We return for more racing action tomorrow, with gates open at 12.00.

KEY Owner Breeding Breeder Jockey Trainer Sponsor Star Ratings Explained
Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below:
HHHHH Selected to win the race
HHHHI Good chance of being placed.
HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims.
HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability
The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances)
The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating birthplace of horse if not Great Britain

Brighton Challenge Cup
First run in 1849, Brighton’s most historic race holds an illustrious past.
The brilliant mare Park Top, winner of the Challenge Cup in 1967 and 1968, was the best horse to run at Brighton in the 20th century with jockey Geoff Lewis describing her as the best mare he had ever ridden. She went on from her Brighton gains to win the Coronation Cup, Hardwicke Stakes and the King George in 1969 before finishing second in the Arc.
We may not have seen her like since although the William Knight trained filly Beacon Lady won four times here in 2013 including the Challenge Cup. Hooded, looking slightly quirky, she came from last to first racing on the stands side to win easily. To top that she came back less than 24 hours later to win again carrying 10st 6lb less apprentice Oisin Murphy’s 7lb allowance. That afternoon she etched her name on a long list of beloved Brighton specialists.
A list to include Operatic Society, a seven times course winner for John Benstead who took the Cup in 1960. Voracity was a dual winner in the 80’s for trainer John Winter and owner Lord Derby.
Our late Queen took home the Cup following the 1995 running when Carpathian sent out by Lord Huntingdon scored in comfortable fashion. Far more recently Mark and Charlie Johnston have combined to be successful with Mister Rockandroll (2015), Curlew River (2017) and Fairmac (2022). Middleham Park Racing, the owners of Fairmac, were to complete a second Cup success when the Richard Hannon trained Lexington Knight scored twelve months ago.
