MODUSCAPE IS A PROPOSED LOS ANGELES AFFORDABLE HOUSING SOLUTION. ADAPATBILITY IS THE DRIVING FORCE OF MODUSCAPE, WITH MOVING PANELS, SIMPLE GEOMETRIES, MOVABLE FURNITURE UNITS, AND UNIQUE OUTDOOR COMMUNITY SPACES. THE PROJECT IS DESIGNED TO BE INTEGRATED INTO EXISTING SINGLE FAMILY NEIGHBORHOODS AND PROMOTE UNITY BETWEEN RESIDENTS IN BOTH HOUSING TYPES.
MODUSCAPE WAS ENTERED INTO BUILDNER’S 2023 LOS ANGELES AFFORDABLE HOUSING IDEAS COMPETITION. THE PROJECT WAS SHORTLISTED AND THE FINAL BOARD IS DISPLAYED ON BUILDNER’S WEBSITE.
WE HAVE SOUGHT TO DESIGN MULTIFUNCTIONAL SPACES WHICH PROMOTE SUSTAINABILITY AND UTILITY. EACH UNIT IS THOUGHTFULLY DESIGNED TO SERVE MULTIPLE PURPOSES, PROVIDING RESIDENTS WITH THE FREEDOM TO CUSTOMIZE THEIR LIVING SPACES ACCORDING TO THEIR PREFERENCES. THIS INTENTIONAL FOCUS ON ADAPTABILITY ALIGNS WITH A COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABILITY, ENCOURAGING A MORE CONSCIOUS AND RESPONSIBLE USE OF RESOURCES.
MODUSCAPE WAS DESIGNED WITH THE HOPE THAT ADAPTABLE HOUSING COULD BE PROVIDED FOR A DIVERSE L.A. POPULATION INCLUDING FAMILIES, SINGLE PROFESSIONALS, COUPLES, & SMALL BUSINESSES. L.A. RESIDENTS SEEKING AFFORDABLE OR TRANSITIONAL HOUSING WILL ENJOY A SPACE WHICH ADAPTS TO THEIR LIFESTYLE AND PROVIDES OUTDOOR COMMUNITY SPACES WHICH CONNECT THE NEIGHBORHOOD TO THE LARGER CITY. MODUSCAPE CULTIVATES A SENSE OF BELONGING & CONNECTION AMONG RESIDENTS WITH A PEDESTRIAN STREET THAT HARMONIOUSLY MERGES TOGETHER PEOPLE OF ALL FINANCIAL, CULTURAL, AND SOCIAL BACKGROUNDS.

PROJECT TWO FEATURES A PROPOSED RENOVATION OF GREGORY AIN’S MAR VISTA HOME [TYPE 2LT]. THE RENOVATION UTILIZES LOS ANGELES SB9 LAW TO ADD TWO ADDITIONAL DWELLING UNITS (ADU) TO THE PROPERTY. THE RENOVATION IS DESIGNED FOR AN ARTIST COLLECTIVE WHO NEED AN ELEGANT LIVE/WORK SPACE. THE NEW ADUS CREATE A PRIVATE COURTYARD WHERE EACH RESIDENT CAN ENTER THEIR LIVING QUARTERS AND TRANSFORMS THE FRONT OF THE HOUSE INTO PUBLIC SPACE TO ENTERTAIN CLIENTS. THE REDESIGN AIMS TO COMPLIMENT GREGORY AIN’S HORIZONTALITY WITH CONTRASTING VERTICALS.

AVERY IS A FREELANCE ARTIST WHO PAINTS ABSTRACT LATIN AMERICAN LANDSCAPES WHICH REMIND HER OF HOME. SHE IS A CLIMATE ACTIVIST AND IS OBSESSED WITH CREATING A PEACEFUL SPACE FOR HERSELF. SHE IS USUALLY IN THE YARD OFF THE SIDE OF THE HOUSE PAINTING, DOING YOGA, MEDITATING, OR COOKING IN THE OUTDOOR KITCHEN. MORGAN IS PARALIZED FROM THE WAIST DOWN FROM A CAR ACCIDENT AS A TEEN. HE DOES NOT LET THAT STOP HIS PASSION FOR WORK AND IS A WELL KNOWN GRAPHIC DESIGNER. MORGAN ENTERTAINS CLIENTS OFTEN IN THE FRONT PUBLIC AREAS OF THE HOUSE & ENJOYS THE SHARED STUDIO SPACE ON THE 1ST FLOOR OF THE HOUSE.

THE CHICAGO MARKETPLACE IS A CANTILEVERED DESIGN WITH A STUNNING UNDULATING ROOF. SHOPPERS WILL BE MESMERIZED BY THE SHADOW PLAY AS THEY WEAVE THROUGH VENDOR STANDS. THE DESIGN WAS INITIALLY INSPIRED BY GAS STATION CANOPIES THROUGHOUT RURAL AMERICA. THE GOAL OF THE PROJECT IS TO FURTHER CONNECT URBAN CHICAGO TO THE SURROUNDING AGRICULTURE OF ILLINOIS. THE MARKETPLACE FEATURES OUTDOOR VENDER UNITS, AN INDOOR COMMUNITY CENTER, COFFEE BAR, COMMUNITY GARDEN BEDS, AND CREATIVE PLAY AREAS FOR CHILDREN.
