TouchTones-EBT Stagebill

WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director

Throughout our history, we’ve been drawn to trying new things. Twenty-five years ago, it was a new training program for young theatre professionals with the Arden Professional Apprenticeship program. Twenty years ago, it was producing world-class theatre for kids and the creation of Arden Children’s Theatre. A few years back, it was opening the Hamilton Family Arts Center. Well, the stagebill that you are reading is the first time we’ve created one stagebill for two productions, which is apt, as these two productions further our commitment to exploring new ideas and finding new ways to expand the range of stories we bring to life on our stages. TouchTones is a world premiere musical developed under the auspices of the Arden’s New Musical Theatre Works Initiative. Developing and producing new plays and musicals has been a cornerstone of our work since our founding in 1988. TouchTones marks our 42nd world premiere and, perhaps most auspiciously, our 10th premiere written by Michael Hollinger. Michael is one of the most produced playwrights in the Arden’s history (surpassed only by Stephen Sondheim), and TouchTones, co-written with Robert Maggio, is the very first Hollinger musical that we’ve premiered. We are also adding a new stage, opening the Bob and Selma Studio Theatre in the Hamilton Family Arts Center with Every Brilliant Thing. The Bob and Selma is a flexible 80-seat theatre equipped with movable seating platforms and lighting and sound systems that will allow us to fully support the wide range of work that we will be producing in this intimate space. We will use this theatre for the final presentations of our classes and camps, as well as for the Arden Cabaret Series highlighting Philadelphia’s leading performers. But, as with Every Brilliant Thing, we will program plays and musicals that benefit from being up-close-and-personal, giving us three different stages on which to produce. Our thanks to Monica and Phil Rosenthal and the Rosenthal Family Foundation for making this possible. Monica and I have been friends since high school, doing plays together, going to the prom, and dreaming about the future. So I first met Bob and Selma, Monica’s parents, many decades ago, before I even imagined creating the Arden. How remarkable to be opening this new stage — and how thrilling that, for years to come, high school kids (and others) will be talking about going to see a show (or be in a show) in the Bob and Selma. New plays. New spaces. New dreams. Thank you for being part of it.

Terry P. S. If you are here to see TouchTones, please check out Every Brilliant Thing at the Bob and Selma. And if you are about to see Every Brilliant Thing, check out the world premiere of TouchTones before it closes on December 3.

TouchTones HONORARY PRODUCERS Fred and Emily Anton Frederick W. Anton, III, is Chairman of the Pennsylvania Manufacturers’ Association. He has been a supporter of the Arden since 1990 when the Arden created St. Stephen’s Alley at 10th and Ludlow Streets, next door to PMA’s headquarters in the former Federal Reserve Bank Building at 925 Chestnut Street. During that time, he founded and hosted the Arden’s Leadership Night, an annual advocacy event that introduced leaders of this region to the Arden’s plays and programming. These Leadership events played a key role in broadening the Arden’s base of supporters, as well as introducing new board members and key supporters. During those St. Stephen’s Alley years, Mr. Anton and PMA generously donated use of a building on Ludlow Street that served as the Arden’s rehearsal space and set and costume shops. In addition, Mr. Anton played a leadership role in the Arden’s move to our current facility in Old City. PMA’s Paul Luber used his real estate expertise and spent a considerable amount of time and energy working on the conversion of this building. For the transformative contributions to the Arden, in 2011 Mr. Anton was selected by the Arden Board of Directors to be one of the inaugural members of the Cornerstone Society, an honorary group of individuals who have moved the organization forward in a significant way. Mr. Anton acknowledges the role F. Otto Haas — the man for whom our mainstage theatre is named — played in his life and career. “Otto was my mentor. He was Chairman of the Board of PMA when I first became President. Otto and I worked together on political action for the betterment of Pennsylvania. We also shared a mutual interest in the arts — first with the Walnut Street Theatre and then for Arden Theatre Company.” Fred and Emily Anton are enthusiastic supporters of the Arden, having served as the Honorary Producers since the 2007/08 season and, like the Arden, have a great passion for great stories by great storytellers. They are thrilled to support TouchTones. We thank Fred and Emily Anton for their ongoing extraordinary support of the Arden. Their tremendous generosity helps to make possible our work on the stage, in the classroom and in the community.

TouchTones A Message from our Production Sponsor For thirty-years, the Arden Theater Company has been dedicated to bringing to life great stories by great storytellers. This has included a wide sampling of the classics, but we are particularly drawn to Arden’s penchant for producing new works by today’s storytellers. Bringing an entirely new story to life is a much riskier business – one that we find wildly attractive. TouchTones is the fourth Michael Hollinger play that we have had the honor to support as Production Sponsor at the Arden. It is his first musical (to be produced) and first collaboration with composer Robert Maggio. We fell in love with TouchTones at an Arden Theatre workshop a few years ago. Michael and Robert captured our imagination and won us over with their music and writing. The Board of Directors of Fox Chase Bank Charitable Fund is simply delighted to bring TouchTones to you. Whether this is your first Arden Theatre experience or you are an Arden regular, great stories need to be shared! Pass it on!

TouchTones DIRECTOR’S Notes I am delighted to be back at the Arden for the 3rd time and making my musical theatre directing debut. And not a well-known musical, but a world premiere! When Terry Nolen asked me to direct TouchTones, I was so excited to join the process of developing these characters, their journeys, and this story. And here we are today!!! TouchTones is ready to be shared with you, to seduce you, to entice you. To invite you to remember your beliefs and ideals about love; to revisit your past or present relationships – your commitment to another human being and the choices you made because of that commitment. TouchTones is a fable that reminds us that we choose love, we choose the person we are close to – whether it be for a brief moment or the rest of our lives. It shows us that we sometimes lose ourselves because of another person, and invites us to find the freedom and joy of being true to ourselves – complete and whole. Intimacy is personal, dangerous and vulnerable, and can sometimes be found in the least intimate of places. TouchTones is a “factory of fantasy”: a ring away from reality and conformity lies comfort and pleasure, lies losing or finding yourself… TouchTones reminds us that “Marriage is not a good place for secrets.” It entices us to break taboos and be true to one another – to be true to ourselves and therefore true to the one we love. When you call TouchTones, there is always someone there who can lead you to your deepest, darkest, craziest, simplest, most intimate fantasies. But remember, on the other end of that line is another human being who has a life, a path, and their own journey. Welcome to TouchTones, a safe space that will please you, make you laugh, and maybe cry. We are here for you to remind you that, like us, you can write your own love story and share your deepest fantasies. . . Ring, ring, let the show begin!!!! Emmanuelle Delpech

TouchTones AUTHOR'S Notes Why do we love fish-out-of-water stories? Dorothy Gale in The Wizard of Oz, Marty McFly in Back to the Future, E.T. and Edward Scissorhands — to name only a few cinematic fish. Maybe because we empathize with the disoriented, having felt this way so often ourselves; or because the fish out of water has to go on a treacherous journey (inside or out) to become who they needed to be all along. When it comes to technology, humans are always fish out of water. Technology evolves and advances, but we’re still people, with the same basic wiring we’ve always had. And as technology becomes more and more central to our quest for intimacy – through computers and smartphones and apps — we’ll continue to flop about on the beach, trying desperately to grow feet and lungs faster. TouchTones is a fish-out-of-water story. We found it together, through trial and error, research and invention, continually asking ourselves and these characters “Who are you? How’d you get like this? What do you love and fear the most? How far would you go to attain the former and avoid the latter?” Along the way, in making two very different worlds collide — those of the abstinence movement and the phone sex industry — we discovered ways that they, and the people that inhabit them, are more similar than we might think. We’re grateful to the many artists and institutions who have contributed to the development of this show, from early song presentations at the BMI Musical Theatre Workshop in NYC to full workshops at the Arden and Villanova University. Both Villanova and West Chester University — our “day jobs” as teachers — have generously advanced us and this endeavor through professional development grants. Finally, heartfelt thanks to our patient spouses and children, who have supported us over the past dozen years. Michael Hollinger & Robert Maggio

WENDY BLACKBURN EASTLAND* Directed by TERRENCE J. NOLEN^ NOVEMBER 9 – DECEMBER 10, 2017

Honorary Producers: Monica and Philip Rosenthal, Rosenthal Family Foundation Special thanks to the Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust for supporting Arden Theatre Company. EVERY BRILLIANT THING is presented by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York. EVERY BRILLIANT THING was first produced by Paines Plough and Pentabus Theatre, on 28 June 2013 at Ludlow Fringe Festival. The play had its North American premiere at Barrow Street Theatre, New York, on 6 December 2014, where it was presented by Barrow Street Theatre and Jean Doumanian Productions. Arden Theatre Company receives state arts funding support through a grant from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. + Member of United Scenic Artists * Member of Actors’ Equity Association, the Union of Local USA 829 Professional Actors and Stage Managers in the U.S.

^ The director and choreographer are members of the Society of Stage Directors and Choreographers, Inc., an independent national labor union.

EVERY BRILLIANT THING HONORARY PRODUCERS Monica and Philip Rosenthal Rosenthal Family Foundation We are honored to support Scott Greer and this production of Every Brilliant Thing—the first production in the Bob and Selma Horan Studio Theatre. The Bob and Selma, which is named in honor of Monica’s parents, will allow the Arden to experiment with artistic programming. It is where we welcome audiences to experience the process of our new play development initiatives. It is a space where students and professionals come together to collaborate. It is a place where seasoned artists explore and test new projects and where children are celebrated and given the opportunity to perform their own stories for their parents and friends. Every Brilliant Thing is the perfect play to open this new space. One of the things that make this play unique is that it strips away all the traditional trappings of theatre – sets and fancy light cues – and focuses entirely on the power of the actor to tell a story, one that is funny and moving and incredibly involving. Given the Arden’s commitment to Philadelphia actors, we’re thrilled to have Scott Greer bring this story to life. Scott is one of Philadelphia’s most beloved actors, and Every Brilliant Thing will mark his 31st Arden production. For 30 years, the Arden has one of Philadelphia’s great cultural treasures and one of the leading regional theatres in the country. We look forward to the Bob and Selma being a home for new voices and new perspectives at the Arden for the next 30 years.

EVERY BRILLIANT THING Director's Notes I love my job. I get to meet and collaborate with so many amazing people. Far, far too many to name. But you know who you are. One of the most rewarding things about my job is witnessing an actor and a role come together in a truly unique and thrilling way. Again, far too many to name. But here are some that have stayed with me: Tom McCarthy as Willie Loman. Grace Gonglewski as Hedda Gabler. Jen Childs as Amy (singing “Not Getting Married Today”) in Company. Jeff Coon and Ben Dibble as Frog and Toad. And as George in Sunday in the Park and Leo Frank in Parade. Joilet Harris in Caroline, or Change. Ian Merrill Peakes as the older brother (the Walt Disney inspired character) in Something Intangible and the lovelorn lieutenant in Three Sisters. Carla Belver as the matriarch in August, Osage County. Krissy Fraelich in Next to Normal. Mary Tuonamen as Puck. Mary Martello in Gypsy. And so many others. . . In each of these performances, these actors and actresses opened themselves to us — revealing their truths, their contradictions, their souls — and in doing so, they reminded us of our humanity. That’s why these performances have stayed with me. And always will. I first saw Every Brilliant Thing when I was at the Edinburgh Festival in 2014, and immediately knew that Scott Greer would do this play at the Arden. This is his role. My thanks to all the actresses and actors with whom we’ve worked. I am in awe of what you do. And grateful for all that you’ve shared.

Terry
