WELCOME

from the Producing Artistic Director Thank you for joining us for the world premiere of My General Tubman by Lorene Cary. I was first introduced to Lorene’s work through The Price of a Child, a powerful and moving novel about Philadelphia’s Underground Railroad that was the inaugural One Book, One Philadelphia selection in 2003, a program through which the whole city is invited to read the same book and come together to talk about it. It is a novel filled with vivid characters, gorgeous language, and compelling insights into our past and, of course, our present. Over the years I’ve come to understand that, in addition to being a writer, Lorene is also an activist, a builder, an educator, and, in my opinion, a visionary -- and that all of this fuels her work as a storyteller. It’s why she has such an extraordinary ability to bring people together and why we are so honored to be producing the world premiere of her audacious new play. I am also thrilled that James Ijames has returned to direct My General Tubman, having directed an astonishing and acclaimed production of Gem of the Ocean for us last season. It’s been inspiring to watch Lorene and James – working with Dramaturg Michele Volansky and this remarkable cast and artistic team –– bring this story to life. New plays can be risky and expensive, but as a theatre dedicated to telling great stories, we are committed to supporting the creation of new stories by today’s storytellers. Our thanks to the Independence Foundation, Fox Chase Bank Charitable Trust, Harold and Mimi Steinberg Charitable Trust, the Rosenthal Family Foundation, and the NEA for their generous investment in this production. I am also grateful that we have an audience who is willing to embrace new plays and proud to be part of a community that is dedicated to the creation of new work. We are kicking off our Leap of Faith campaign for the 2020/21 season and are finalizing plans for an exciting season of great plays and musicals. We will let you know as soon as details are confirmed but hope that you will “take the leap” and join us for next year (which will include some of the Arden’s most cherished collaborators). We can announce that next season will include a return of Every Brilliant Thing featuring the extraordinary Scott Greer. If you haven’t seen it, you don’t want to miss it; and if you have, you know that it is a show that changes every single night, so we hope you will see it again. Details about subscribing are on the ad to your left. Take the leap. There is no better way to start a new year than with a new play. Thank you for joining us for Lorene Cary’s My General Tubman. Thank you for supporting new work. And thank you for being part of the Arden.

Director's Note There are a few things I would like you to know before you experience this play. The first is that what Lorene Carey’s play My General Tubman reiterates for us all is the power of collective action and transformative justice. The urgency that is generated when we bring our broken, complex flawed and sometimes cruel selves to the work of transforming the world is unlimited and powerful beyond measure. Harriet, was committed to the work of liberation with a deep desire to change the world into a place that is more humane, inclusive and interdependent. Another thing I offer as a way into this play is the fact that Harriet Tubman was beautiful. I mean this in all of the ways we use the term. I will say it again Harriet Tubman was beautiful. She is a historical giant and a massive figure we ascribe small fictions and great honor upon. She was also someone’s sister, someone’s daughter, a friend to many, a teacher, a contributor to the long tradition black rhetoric and liberation theology, a public intellectual, a wife, a mother and a lover. The play wants us to see her fall in love. The play wants us to see her organize and build coalitions of people around a shared passion. The play wants us to see Harriet Tubman the way we see ourselves: messy, complicated, fragile but also capable of radical care and compassion. The final thing I hope you walk away from this play feeling in your gut is that systems like chattel slavery don’t end or disappear they transform. America, in particular, has yet to fully grapple with the legacy of slavery that touches everything from the food we eat to the mortgages we all pay. I hope this play allows you to see the parallels between these two systems, slavery and mass incarceration and I believe that this play will inspire a new line of thinking for all of us. That my liberation is tied to your liberation and your fight for freedom is also my fight for freedom. This, to me, is the great legacy of Harriet Tubman, who after escaping to freedom herself, devoted her life to gaining that freedom for those left in bondage.

A Message

from our Production Sponsor Fox Chase Bank Charitable Fund is proud to join the Arden in their mission of telling great stories by great storytellers. Throughout our long partnership, we have been particularly drawn to supporting courageous, bold, and exciting new plays by Philadelphia artists. We are thrilled to sponsor the World Premiere production of My General Tubman by Lorene Cary, who is a true literary treasure of our city. This story is centered on an icon that we all recognize, Harriet Tubman, but after curtain call, we hope you will think about her in a different way, in a deeper way. This subject matter is enlightening, educating, and important to anyone who believes in civil rights and equality for all. We are honored to be the Production Sponsor of My General Tubman and to play a small part in creating innovative new theatre work in Philadelphia.

Thank You

to our Honorary Producers We are honored to support visionary author and newly christened playwright, Lorene Cary, for her world premiere of My General Tubman, under the guidance of Director James Ijames. Terry introduced me to Lorene three years ago, during the Arden’s first reading of My General Tubman. I was captivated by Lorene’s creative exploration into Harriet Tubman’s epic dedication to freedom. Knowing that Harriet worked closely with Philadelphia abolitionists, I think it is thrilling the Arden has commissioned this work by a Philadelphia author, with a fully Philadelphia cast bringing it to light. Last year, as I was in the midst of caring for my own elders, Terry gave me a copy of Lorene’s book, Ladysitting—her beautiful and personal account of caring for her grandmother. Not only is Ladysitting relatable and healing, it provides an opportunity to see Philadelphia through the lens of Lorene’s impressive family’s experience. I am grateful to Terry and the Arden for introducing us to this remarkable storyteller. It is what I love most about the Arden: the work is personal, impactful, and you are invited to be part of the experience beyond that of audience member. For over 30 years, the Arden has been one of Philadelphia’s great cultural treasures and one of the leading regional theatres in the country. We look forward to seeing even more new voices and new perspectives at the Arden for the next 30 years. Monica Rosenthal

Lorene Cary’s memoir, Ladysitting: My Year with Nana at the End of Her Century, is now available at all major book retailers. Paperback copies available beginning June 23! “Radiant.” -O Magazine
