WELCOME

From the Producing Artistic Director Adventure! Adventures involve taking risks. Trying something new. Facing the unknown. But though adventures can be challenging - and sometimes scary - they remind you of the excitement of being alive. Treasure Island is a great adventure story about pirates and buried treasure. It was originally written as a book by Robert Louis Stevenson. Have you ever heard the phrase "X marks the spot?" That comes from Treasure Island. A squawking parrot sitting on a pirate's shoulder? Also from Treasure Island. But our play is different from the book. Our play starts today. In a living room. And the hero of our play is Emily -- a girl who has to do homework and practice her violin and leads a life that's probably a lot like yours. But Emily has a secret weapon -- a love of pirates and her imagination. And Emily's imagination is so great that she brings Treasure Island to life. She gets to be INSIDE of the story -- surrounded by pirates, sailing the great seas, searching for treasure. She gets to live the adventure of her dreams. What's the best adventure you’ve ever had? Was it a trip? A new school? Going to camp? How about for other people? Ask your mom or dad or teacher what was the best adventure they've had. And since adventures make great stories, it might make for good listening. If you are lucky, life is filled with adventures. New experiences. Exciting challenges. Amazing people. That's the treasure we seek. Adventure awaits -- in our play and in life. I hope you have a great time!

THANK YOU TO OUR HONORARY PRODUCERS On behalf of the Hamilton Family Charitable Trust, we welcome you to join us for Treasure Island. The Arden is a vital, thriving theatre, truly committed to the artists, audiences, and most importantly, the children of this region. The Hamilton Family Charitable Trust has been honored to support the creation and development of Arden Children’s Theatre. When the Arden approached us in 1998 about starting Children’s Theatre, we were enthusiastic supporters because we believe all children should be exposed to the best art at a young age. We never imagined that our support would help Arden Children’s Theatre become a cornerstone of the cultural life for families in this city— and one of the most renowned children’s theaters in the country. Our children enjoyed coming to Arden productions when they were youngsters, and we’re glad your families are here today. And we didn’t stop there! Arden Children’s Theatre was the catalyst for the Arden’s education outreach program, Arden for All, which works with schools in Philadelphia, Camden, and Delaware County, serving thousands of students each year. When the Hamilton Family Arts Center opened in 2013, it became the permanent home for the Arden’s education programs, giving students the opportunity to explore their dreams with theatre professionals during quality after school and summer programs. Our family is thrilled to continue our investment in the Arden and the children in our region by helping to bring this production of Treasure Island to the stage for a whole new generation. Through the imaginative work on stage and in education programs, the Arden engages children across our region in storytelling, literacy, and creativity; encouraging them to be curious, love reading, and become lifelong cultural participants — and we’re so happy to be a part of this special work. Set sail for Treasure Island! Alta and Peter Hamilton

Director's Notes Childhood is perilous territory. Of all people, it is kids who are most consistently navigating brand new waters and unfamiliar terrain. The hastily scribbled maps their parents have drawn for them are often hard to read or outdated. Every playground across this country is filled each day with risk and sacrifice, alliance and betrayal, fear and bravery, isolation and the hope of rescue, battles engaged, blood spilled, treasure lost and won. Children dry their tears, wipe their noses, and head out again the next day… to see what will happen. Children are the bravest people I know, full stop. I hope you enjoy watching Emily’s adventure as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you. It’s dedicated to my own kids, and to yours too. Most sincerely, Doug Hara

Adventure of Your Own... Dreaming of adventure, Emily brings Treasure Island to life. If you could live out your favorite story, which one would it be? Would you cast a spell with Harry Potter, find the Wild Things with Max, or become a king or queen of Narnia?
