WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director

Welcome to the Arden's 29th season! We are thrilled to welcome Aaron Posner back to the Arden with this Philadelphia premiere of his wonderful play STUPID FUCKING BIRD, a new play "sort of" adapted from Anton Chekhov's THE SEAGULL. Aaron is one of the Arden's co-founders. When we started the Arden in 1988, we created a very simple mission for this theatre, one that has remained virtually unchanged since then: to bring to life great stories by great storytellers. Over the years, Aaron has adapted many great stories for us here at the Arden, including works by Kurt Vonnegut, Kaye Gibbons, Steve Lopez, Chaim Potok (with adaptations of both THE CHOSEN and MY NAME IS ASHER LEV), among others. Yet I am struck by the fact that STUPID FUCKING BIRD -- the 10th play by Aaron that we've produced at the Arden -- marks a significant step in his work as a playwright. Aaron's previous adaptations were marked by faithfulness to the original source material, often maintaining the narrative voice and sometimes a great deal of the author's language. Not so in STUPID FUCKING BIRD (even the title announces that this play is not a faithful adaptation). Yes, this play captures much of the story and spirit of Chekhov's THE SEAGULL, but it is also very much Aaron's own play. "Sort of" adapted from Anton Chekhov, yet very much a new play by Aaron Posner. With STUPID FUCKING BIRD, we bring to the stage the work of two great storytellers -- and the awesome achievement of this play is that it is indeed a reflection of both. Last spring, we honored Arden Board member Joanne Harmelin at our Granfalloon gala. Joanne has been an ardent Arden advocate for many years and has also supported so many other theatres throughout this region. Over the past two decades, she has helped this theatre community to grow and thrive. At the Granfalloon, Joanne spoke movingly about why theatre is important to her: For so many years after a long day of phone calls, traffic, politics and general business mayhem, I would escape to a darkened theatre and be transported to another time, place or viewpoint. One filled with laughter or sadness or brilliance or horror or empathy or humanity. Whatever tragedies the day had wrought, I found solace and rejuvenation in the theatre...Creativity, community, diversity, our collective history, and individual artistic expression are key elements to a rich, open and inclusive society. This message has never been more relevant for this community than it is today. That's what we endeavor to do. It's why we created the Arden back in 1988, and why we continue to bring to life great stories by great storytellers. We want to create theatre that matters to our audiences -- to continue to explore how theatre can, in the words of our founding mission, "arouse, provoke. illuminate and inspire." Thank you for joining us for STUPID FUCKING BIRD by Aaron Posner. Thank you for being part of the Arden.

HONORARY PRODUCER: HOLLY KINSER The minute I read the reviews of Stupid Fucking Bird, which brilliantly weaves contemporary themes with the past, I immediately requested to serve as Honorary Producer. Plus, as anyone who knows me will attest, the second word in the title is a frequent favorite in my vocabulary. My relationship with the Arden truly began when I lived around the corner and was pregnant with my daughter, Lena. Now, she is in 6th grade and has attended Arden Drama Camp, most recently in the Arden’s second building—The Hamilton Family Arts Center. Further, she, her friends, and classmates have seen countless Children Theatre productions on the F. Otto Haas stage. For me, I’ve had the privilege of serving on the Board of Directors in my recent capacity as Vice President. Holly Kinser and her daughter, Lena.

I love being a contributor to the Board and this Theatre. I work with people and Arden staff that are committed to bringing great stories to the stage, community and classroom. And, while that commitment from a group of dedicated professionals is serious, we always find time to laugh. On a personal note, Amy Murphy and Terry Nolen have grown to be part of my family, or maybe more accurately, I’ve become part of theirs. The Arden is a very special place to The Kinser Girls and embodies so many qualities that exemplify the best that the City of Philadelphia has to offer. It’s for this reason that I don’t hesitate to provide financial support to the Arden and ask each of you to consider doing the same. - Holly Kinser

DIRECTOR’S Notes So, I started writing this odd little play about five years ago without any real expectation that it would ever be produced. I wrote it because I really wanted to write it. Unlike pervious adaptations of mine, I didn’t write it to share or expand or translate someone else's story to the stage… but because there were things I passionately wanted to say— shout about, even. I chose to use the revolutionary brilliance of Anton Chekhov as a springboard to tell a story of my own. And that was leap into the dark for me… Putting SFB out into the world was more than a little scary. It is deeply personal. When my friends and loved ones see me after a performance they tend to look at me with a kind of knowing, awkward little smile and a shake of the head. It's a little like they've just caught me coming out of the shower, wrapped in a towel… I'm a little more exposed than anyone is really comfortable with, but not quite to the point of total inappropriateness. But so it goes… Art is risky. Or can be. Or should be... I wrote it in a bit of a frenzy, actually, hurling onto the page all kinds of things I've been processing for a very long time, as well as things I'm still actively grappling with every day. Nothing in it is autobiographical… or, rather, perhaps, everything in it is “sort of” autobiographical, though few of the events or characters or moments, even, come directly from my life. I tried to tell the truth. I wondered if anyone would see things like I do and maybe relate to the struggles. The enthusiastic reception it has received has been both shocking and gratifying. The fact that it was one of the ten most produced plays in the country last season bowled me over. And now there are productions in the works in Australia, Sweden, Argentina, and elsewhere as well. Crazy… It has been so rewarding, however, that I have now embarked on a full cycle of Chekhov variations. LIFE SUCKS—my new take on UNCLE VANYA— is running right now at the wonderful Lookingglass Theatre in Chicago. NO SISTERS (an even odder, intertwined performance piece to be performed in tandem with Chekhov’s THE THREE SISTERS) will premiere at The Studio Theatre in Washington DC this winter. My reimagining of THE CHERRY ORCHARD is still the works, but it is rapidly taking shape…! I am grateful, as always, to a vast array of people. To Howard Shalwitz at Woolly Mammoth Theatre who first helped SFB take flight; to all the artists on the original team at Woolly; to my wife and daughter for their endless patience, love, support and inspiration; to all the theatre artists across the country who have embraced it, produced it, been in it, and helped it grow and mature; and to Terry and Amy and the amazing cast, staff and team at the Arden who have given me this lovely chance to direct it myself for the first time. I am thrilled to have the chance to share it with all of you. Thanks for coming. I hope you have a wonderful fucking time!

Last season, we launched the Arden Cabaret Series and audiences embraced the opportunity to get to know some of their favorite artists up-close-and-personal. "This new concept has all the earmarks of an unqualified success for the Arden Theatre Company." - Beyond My Backyard

Photo: Anne Todd

This year we will be expanding the series to feature more of our favorite Philadelphia artists. We are thrilled to announce that we will be opening the second season of the Arden Cabaret Series with composer/writer Michael Ogborn. Before Michael Ogborn became known as the writer of such musicals as Baby Case, CafĂŠ Puttanesca, Field Hockey Hot, and The Three Maries, he was one of this region's most sought after cabaret performers (Philadelphia Magazine named him Best of Philly Cabaret Performer in 1992!) This October, Michael returns in a new cabaret that promises to be an extraordinary evening of songs, stories and laughter. Pack a picnic. Bring a bottle of wine (bring a few!) Bring your friends. Seating is limited to 100 people so make plans now to be in the room with Michael Ogborn.

Oct. 14 & 15
