WELCOME

from the Producing Artistic Director Welcome to Once and the start of our 2018/19 season. We have quite the year ahead with 7 Mainstage and 2 Children’s Theatre productions! This season marks the return of some of our favorite artists: Scott Greer returns in his most brilliant performance in Every Brilliant Thing; Grace Gonglewski returns for her 27th Arden production as Nora in A Doll's House, Part 2; and Joilet Harris also returns to play the same character she played in last season’s A Doll’s House for this production. Whit MacLaughlin and Doug Hara are both back to lead our two Arden Children’s Theatre productions of Charlotte’s Web and a new version of Treasure Island. Along with those returning, we also have many new artists joining us for the first time, including five directors who are making their Arden directorial debuts: Tracy Brigden, who was the Artistic Director at Pittsburgh's City Theatre for 16 years (and who I’ve known since we were students at Northwestern University) will direct A Doll's House, Part 2; Amina Robinson, who is about to direct Theatre Horizon's production of The Color Purple, will direct 74 Seconds… To Judgment; Malika Oyetimein, a Philadelphia director who is quickly gaining a national reputation as a director to watch, is directing August Wilson’s How I Learned What I Learned; Rebecca Wright, nominated for two Outstanding Director Barrymore Awards for her work this past season, is directing Indecent; and James Ijames, who has appeared numerous times on our stages as an actor (and is also an acclaimed playwright whose Kill Move Paradise opened the Wilma’s season), will be making his Arden directorial debut with August Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean. New playwrighting voices include Lucas Hnath, Paula Vogel and Philadelphia playwright Kash Goins, whose 74 Seconds..To Judgment is a play that everyone will be talking about. We're thrilled to welcome - and welcome back - these extraordinary artists to bring their passions, perspectives and artistry to our stages. We are now producing plays for audiences of all ages on our three stages. I love that we are able to bring such a wide variety of stories to you: musicals, new plays, classics. Plays for kids that ignite that imaginations and plays for adults that challenge and provoke. Epic plays that traverse decades and continents and intimate stories that involve a single teller. That has always been our goal – to bring to life great stories that make going to the theatre an indispensable part of your lives. So please come back. Bring kids or friends or just yourself. But come see what else we have in store for you in the coming months. Thank you for joining us for Once and the launch of the Arden’s 31st season. We are thrilled to have you here.

Director's Notes I have loved music my entire life, having spent countless hours with master musicians and living inside musical worlds. I've sat at the piano with composers as they played their work, watched brilliant musical directors teach and refine incredibly complex musical scores, and have, again and again, seen that extraordinary moment when gifted singers and musicians discover how to make a particular musical moment soar. Yet as close as I've been to making music, I have never been able to play a musical instrument. I've tried. When I was in second grade, I took guitar lessons from Sister Marie Annette, but spent far too long struggling with simple G and C chords to play the songs I wanted to play. And I then took piano lessons for a few years, but the best I could muster was a halting version of "My Favorite Things." So I found other ways to find music in my life, and have been fortunate to make directing musicals a touchstone of my work. Through music, I have been taken to so many places. I've explored the human heart and been reminded what it's like to see life through others' eyes. I've entered Georges Sereut's pointillist world, shared the consuming revenge of a demon barber, and gotten lost in cartoonist Alison Bechdel's examination of the past and unflinching pursuit of truth. Of course we all have a unique and very personal connection to music, and each of us has our own cherished music, our own favorite songs -- music that reminds us what is means to be alive or to fall in love or to experience the divine. Music allows us to travel back in time -- a song can transport us to our past, and though we might not remember the specifics of when we first heard the song, we can remember - and relive - who we were at that time in our lives and how that music transformed, affirmed or inspired us. As Leonard Bernstein is quoted as saying, "Music can name the unnameable and communicate the unknowable." Glenn Hansard and Markéta Irglová, who wrote the songs for Once (and also starred in the film on which this musical is based) certainly understood this. As do the brilliant musician/actors who have come together to bring this production to life. The talent and training and hard work of this cast is inspiring and intimidating (performing this show, they collectively play a total of 30 instruments!). Spending time in the room as they've made music has been an absolute joy - and I can't wait for you to experience it. Once is a celebration of the power of music to bring people together. Our goal with this production has been to bring you as close to the music and music-making as possible so that you can soak in the vibrations of the strings and feel the reverberations of the sound. And perhaps, if only for a moment or two, allow you a glimpse of the “unknowable.” My thanks to all of the composers and musicians and musical directors who have enriched my life. This production is for you.

2018/19 Season

Order online at

ardentheatre.org

With a diversity of themes, settings and stations on its face, the 2018/19 Season can easily be viewed on the surface as eclectic. However, upon closer examination one sees the true nature of this season as a whole – as an examination of choices. Whether to pursue a passion, open old wounds, even to follow the law. The choices we make as we all walk our own path determine not only who we are, but the legacy we leave behind. Our goal through the work onstage will be to entertain, enlighten and enrich the lives of our patrons, artists and friends. Join us for this season’s journey.

A New Play by Paula Vogel

BY PAULA VOGEL

The first story in August Wilson’s landmark The American Century Cycle.

August Wilson tells, in his own words, stories that shaped him, in his autobiographical tour de force.

Pulitzer Prize-winning Paula Vogel’s acclaimed play with music.
