WELCOME

From the Producing Artistic Director I am thrilled to be closing this season with Indecent – Paula Vogel's luminous play about the power of creation, community, and connection. This production marks the Arden directorial debut of Rebecca Wright, a Philadelphia artist who has earned a reputation as one of this region’s most exciting and innovative voices. As we wrap up this year, we are, of course, looking to the future, deep into preparations for next season: We will open with Ragtime, a musical that we've been waiting to produce for many years. Next up is the Philadelphia premiere of Tiny Beautiful Things, a funny and very touching new play based on the acclaimed bestselling book by Cheryl Strayed (author of Wild). Following that is An Iliad, a modernday retelling of Homer’s classic in a one-person version featuring Mary Tuomanen (Puck in Midsummer, Alison Bechtel in Fun Home). The new year will bring the world premiere production of My General Tubman by Philadelphia writer Lorene Cary (author of the first One Book, One Philadelphia selection, The Price of a Child). This play – an Arden commission – is about the complex journey of Harriet Tubman and the impact she continues to have today and will be directed by James Ijames, director of August Wilson’s Gem of the Ocean. And then, for the first time in our history, A Streetcar Named Desire, Tennessee Williams’ monumental play brought to life with an all-star Philadelphia cast, continuing our commitment to bringing to life great plays that challenge and celebrate Philadelphia’s acting community. We will return to the Bob and Selma Studio for No Child… by Nilaja Sun, a tour-deforce exploration of teaching theater in the public school system. This production will be used as a springboard to celebrate the work of Philadelphia’s arts institutions in our schools, highlighting our Arden for All Teaching Artists and the heroic work they do. Finally, the spring will bring with it the celebratory Once on This Isand – the Tony Award-winning musical set on a Caribbean Island that will fill the Haas with beauty and passion. This show, directed by Malika Oyetimein (How I Learned What I Learned) will be the perfect finale for our 32nd season. Sparking creation. Fostering community. Forging connection. As Indecent reminds us, it’s what theater can do at its best. And what we endeavor to do with each and every production we produce. Please consider subscribing to next season and thank you for being part of the Arden.

Director's Note Theater is so ephemeral. The nature of live performance is that it exists for its duration only: an hour or two, and then it’s gone. And yet, there is something eternal about it: for all of history, people have gathered together to witness and enact stories. When we come to the theater we are tapping into that enduring energy. Indecent exists in the liminal space between these two truths. It is a play about a play, a love letter to theater. The play God of Vengeance is the star of Indecent. The characters we meet are people who loved it, who believed in it, who helped to make it real. In the process of tracking this play’s life, Indecent mourns cultural erasure and celebrates artistic vibrancy; it tells the tragedy of a lost language, even as it joyously brings a lost world to life; it grapples with censorship at the same time that it offers a snapshot of the revolutionary potential of representational art. It depicts theater’s potential to amplify hidden identities, create space for us to connect, present stories that unite us. In a world that is still tragically plagued with violent repression of certain faiths, ethnicities, and expressions of love, it often feels like a real stretch to cast your lot with art. Without shying away from that doubt, Indecent also suggests that art has the power to save us, save our souls, and our society, from the darker forces of the world. In making this production, we have laughed and cried and endeavored to invite the audience into the world of passionate practitioners. You are a vital part of theater’s empathy-expanding potential. We want to show you what it’s like to watch from the wings. We’re so glad you’re here in the room with us.

2019/20 SUBSCRIPTIONS NOW ON SALE! RAGTIME This Tony Award-winning tale follows the intersections of cultures, classes, and nationalities – all fighting for their American dream in New York City at the turn of the 20th century – reimagined for today’s audience.

TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS Based on the book by Cheryl Strayed, Tiny Beautiful Things explores Strayed’s time as the anonymous advice columnist, Dear Sugar. While navigating her readers’ questions and pleas for advice, Strayed weaves together her own personal experiences and finds the courage to create a column full of light, laughter, and humanity.

AN ILIAD The infinite beauty of storytelling consumes this provocative adaptation of Homer’s classic. The Trojan War is placed beside our modern day, presenting the allure of wartime heroism and the inevitable cost of battle that overshadows all history.

MY GENERAL TUBMAN A world premiere by acclaimed Philadelphia playwright Lorene Cary, My General Tubman is a beautiful and exciting new play about the complex journey of Harriet Tubman and the impact she continues to have today.

A MESSAGE From Our Honorary Producers Being part of the Arden’s production and supporting its premier in Philadelphia is an opportunity that we jointly committed to almost instantly. We were lucky to see Indecent in NYC and we were both drawn to the story, the characters, the relationship between the two women, the music and the Jewish themes and traditions the play embraces. Eileen: I saw Indecent first, after buying a single ticket during a work trip to NYC. At the Tony Awards, I cheered when the two women, who created Indecent, accepted their Tony award in a groundbreaking moment. Sitting alone in the theatre, I was entranced by the story in the story and the haunting nature of the play. All of the Jewish themes resonated with me through my eyes as an American Jew. I always have felt lucky to have been born in the US, years after the Holocaust ended, to two families who suffered minimal losses during World War II. Thanks to my mother, who was a student of politics and the arts, I knew about the Yiddish theatre and it’s appeal to Jewish audiences in Europe. And I knew that this play brings that legacy to life in ways I could not have imagined. I went home and tried to describe what I saw to Marty. I told him he had to see it. A couple weeks later, I saw it for a second time, and he saw it for the first time, with tears often in his eyes. Marty: I was born to parents who were Holocaust survivors, in a household in which, in my early years, only Yiddish was spoken. After arriving in New York, my parents quickly moved and raised our family on a chicken farm in southern New Jersey, where many other Holocaust survivor families set roots. My parents were poor and worked hard for us to live off our farm, yet these survivors brought theatre and music to this small Jewish farm community. I heard much about the Yiddish theatre in Europe with a longing from my parents that these plays and theatre stars were lost. I was very moved, watching Indecent in NYC, seeing and hearing the Yiddish words, resonant with my upbringing and my parents background. And yet, the play is also eloquent and contemporary in its themes of freedom of expression and the universality and ubiquity of oppression. I remain fluent in my first language,Yiddish, seeking ways to keep it alive in my life, despite fewer and fewer opportunities to speak it. On the heels of seeing Fiddler in Yiddish, in NYC recently, I’m thrilled to be part of the Arden’s production of Indecent. Eileen and I have seen some of our best theatre at the Arden, first becoming completely hooked with the Theatre in 1999, when we saw The Chosen, and enraptured, again and again, season after season. We’re thrilled to co-produce Indecent alongside Ceth and Sam Plum and hope you enjoy it as much as we have. Eileen Heisman and Marty Tuzman

A History of

God of Vengeance By Sholem Asch

1907 — In Warsaw, Sholem Asch reads his new play, Got fun Nekome (God of Vengeance), for the

founding father of modern Yiddish literature, I. L. Peretz. Disturbed by the play, Peretz counsels Asch to "burn it." Instead, Asch takes the play to Berlin, where it opens to high praise. Got fun Nekome was the first Yiddish play to be staged throughout Europe and was translated into ten languages. 1922 — Isaac Goldberg’s English translation of God of Vengeance opens at the Provincetown Playhouse. February 2, 1923 — God of Vengeance opened at the Greenwich Village Theatre. A major press war ensued between the orthodox Tageplatt and the radical Forverts. Orthodox papers referred to God of Vengeance as "filthy," "immoral," and "indecent," while radical papers described it as "moral," "artistic," and "beautiful."

The original Broadway cast of God of Vengeance, circa 1923.

February 19, 1923 — God of Vengeance opens on Broadway at the Apollo Theater. The passionate scene in the rain is cut from this production, changing the women’s relationship from one of love to manipulation.

March 6, 1923 — Mid-performance, the police inform the cast and producer that they are under indictment for obscenity. They are charged with “unlawfully advertising, giving, presenting, and participating in an obscene, indecent, immoral, and impure drama or play.” They plead not guilty. May 23, 1923 — The company of God of Vengeance goes on trial and is found guilty. The verdict is overturned on appeal. 1940s — Got fun Nekome is performed in the Łódź Ghetto where an estimated 160,000 Jews are sealed off from the world. Nazi officials discuss the “Final Solution of the Jewish Question.” 1946 — Sholem Asch prohibited the production of God of Vengeance, sayings that, “the situation described in the play is dated and exists no longer.” He feared the play would be used as anti-Semitic propaganda following World War II. 1956 — Sholem Asch dies.

Sholem Asch, circa 1940

2000 — Production of Donald Mangolis' translation premieres at Seattle's ACT 2002 — God of Vengeance is performed at Willaimstown Theatre Festival 2010 — Rebecca Taichman calls Paula Vogel to collaborate on a play about the obscenity trial, which would later become Indecent. 2016 —A revival of God of Vengeance is staged by the New Yiddish Rep at LaMaMa. 2017 —Indecent opens at the Cort Theatre on Broadway, 94 years after the Broadway premiere of God of Vengeance.

Our access program, Arden For All, makes our work available to the entire ommunity through subsidized tickets and books for economically disadvantaged young people, and our Arden Arts Education Fund provides scholarships for Arden Drama School classes and camps. The Arden has received twelve Philadelphia Magazine “Best of Philly” Awards, the Arts & Business Council’s Arts Excellence Award, six City Paper “Reader’s Choice” Awards, four Philadelphia Inquirer “Theatre Company of the Year” citations, 77 awards and 390 nominations from the Theatre Philadelphia’s Barrymore Awards for Excellence in Theatre, and was named “Best Theatre Company” by Philadelphia Weekly in 2009. Arden Theatre Company, a professional, nonprofit 501(c)(3) theatre company, is a member of the Theatre Communications Group, the League of Resident Theatres, Greater Philadelphia Cultural Alliance, Philadelphia Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Old City Arts Association. The Arden participates in The Barrymore Awards, a program of Theatre Philadelphia. Arden Theatre Company wishes to thank... Irving Zucker, Jo Holcomb, and East End Salon.
