WELCOME from the Producing Artistic Director

Welcome to Cabaret and the start of our 30th Anniversary season. To mark this anniversary, we are excited to announce two new ventures that will allow us to expand even further the range of stories brought to life on our stages: The first is the opening of the Bob and Selma Horan Studio Theatre in the Hamilton Family Arts Center. This 80-seat theatre will have flexible seating and state-ofthe-art lighting and sound systems, allowing us to produce work that benefits from an intimate setting. We’ll be opening the Bob and Selma with Every Brilliant Thing, a beautiful one-person play that gets at the essence of theatre – an actor, an audience, and a great story. And when the actor is Scott Greer, you know you’re in for a very special experience. The second venture is a new partnership with GoKash Onstage, a dynamic theatre company dedicated to cultivating fertile ground for African American artists here in Philadelphia. When the Arden first started in 1988, we were in residence at the Walnut Street Theatre, producing in their studio theatres. The Walnut provided rehearsal space, marketing and box office expertise, technical support, and, most importantly, a home so that we could focus on creating art and connecting with audiences. It is fitting to be embarking on this relationship with GoKash Onstage, as a way to honor what was done for us 30 years ago while investing the future of Philadelphia theatre. GoKash Onstage will be producing an original play entitled V to X this April in the Bob and Selma. Stay tuned for more information. Cabaret marks our 180th production – a body of work that includes 42 world premieres, 41 musicals, and 35 children’s theatre productions. Theatre is an ephemeral art form: that’s part of what makes it special; productions and performances exist in the now. Yet the memory of those performances live on, and the story of the Arden’s history is best told by remembering some of the remarkable productions and performances that have lit up our stages: Jorge Cousineau’s use of paper cut-outs and live video for The Secret Garden; Jeff Coon and Ben Dibble as Frog and Toad; the shock and audacity of Clybourne Park; Ovid’s tales arising out of a beautiful pool in Metamorphoses; Mary Martello’s Mama Rose. Towards the back of this playbill is a list of the 179 Arden productions to date. I’d love to hear which ones were the most memorable. What lives on in you? Much has changed since we started in the Walnut Street Studio Theatre in 1988, but the essence of our mission has remained unchanged: to tell great stories by great storytellers. And to be a part of this great city and our extraordinary cultural community. Thank you for joining us,

DIRECTOR’S Notes Wilkommen! Bienvenue! Welcome! Cabaret takes place in Berlin during the reign of the Weimar Republic, which came to power in a defeated, disillusioned Germany at the end of World War I. The young republic ended censorship in Germany and enacted a ton of liberal social policies. Artists, scientists and social outcasts from around the world were attracted to Berlin’s new liberal outlook, creating a plethora of work and transforming Berlin into the cultural mecca of the Western World. Traditional rules about gender and sexuality were also being challenged. Though homosexuality was taboo in Germany, (and was subjected to imprisonment and fines) Magnus Hirschfeld, the German doctor who pioneered studies in sexology and gender, founded the Institute for Sexual Research in Berlin in 1919 and openly advocated acceptance of homosexuality. Gay and lesbian bars appeared. Closed-door, nighttime venues like cabarets and dance halls became gay haunts. Women, who had entered the workforce during the war and recently gained access to some forms of birth control, were no longer defined by marriage and child-bearing. Despite this wave of progressive ideas, this feeling that history could repeat itself and everything could come crashing down was prevalent in the heads and hearts of the Berliners. It felt like the lack of censorship and sexual and artistic freedom was too good to last. Carl Zuckmayer, a playwright, said about Berlin “The arts blossomed like a field awaiting the harvest. What I love is this taste of transience on the tongue – every year might be the last year.” Berlin was driving relentlessly to its own end, but enjoying the ride. Cabaret emerged during this time as the signature entertainment form of Weimar Berlin. It melded lowly amusement genres to Bohemian sensibilities, all in the service of a middle-class audience on the slum. According to Voluptuous Panic: The Erotic World of Weimar Berlin, German cabaret was “Half brothel and half concert-café, [where] there were two moods: the bitterly sardonic and the heart-thumpingly erotic.” When Hitler took power in 1933, cabaret was one of the first victims of Nazi terror. Some writers and performers were arrested and taken to concentration camps; some committed suicide; and others left Germany for America or other parts of Europe. Cabaret the musical inhabits two worlds: one is the story of Sally & Cliff, Herr Schultz & Frau. Schneider, Ernst & Kost; and the other are the acts performed by the Emcee at the Kit Kat Klub that comments on the state of the shifting world outside its doors. In this version of Cabaret, using the Roundabout Theatre Company’s 1998 revival script, the Kit Kat Klub is all around you, and the stories of Sally and all are shared on the Klub’s stage, presented and aided by the Emcee and the Kit Kat Klub Boys and Girls. As the Nazis take control and the world beings to burn all around them, a central question of the musical takes center stage: why do we continue to allow destructive powers to gain control? Currently, this feels like a question that we as Americans should be asking.

A special thank you to audience members who attended performances of A Year with Frog and Toad and Gypsy last season and responded to the Hamilton Family Foundation matching challenge by filling our buckets with hundreds of gifts – anything from a few coins to many bills - and collectively donated over $40,000 in support of the work we do on stage, in classrooms, and in the community.

Make a donation through your workplace United Way program. Our Donor Choice Number: 14198. Contributions made through the United Way support our work with children.
