With a history of more than 130 years of service in Greater Philadelphia, PECO’s relationship with our 1.6 million customers across the five-county region runs deeper than that of an energy provider and its customers. We power communities, we power institutions, and we proudly power (and champion) the arts. From honoring the past by preserving incredible and rare works of art, to cultivating a passion for creativity in our youth, our commitment to investing in the arts and culture institutions that make our region rich and vibrant is unparalleled. Annually, PECO invests more than $5 million to support hundreds of local programs and organizations, serving an integral role in supporting economic growth across our region. Our 2,500 dedicated employees provide leadership, financial, and in-kind support for hundreds of organizations and nonprofits. And through PECO-sponsored programs and productions such as Charlotte’s Web, we are proud to ensure access to the arts for people of all ages and backgrounds, so that everyone can discover and experience the arts throughout our region. We look forward to continuing our support of the Arden Theatre and powering the continued growth of the Greater Philadelphia region. Enjoy the show and Happy Holidays! Michael A. THANK YOU TO OUR HONORARY PRODUCER On behalf of the Hamilton Family Charitable Trust, we welcome the Arden and all of you back to Zuckerman’s farm for the third production of Charlotte’s Web. It is a story of friendship and perseverance that is just as relevant today as ever before. The Hamilton Family Charitable Trust has been honored to support the creation and development of Arden Children’s Theatre. When the Arden approached us in 1998 about starting Children’s Theatre, we were enthusiastic supporters because we believe all children should be exposed to the best art at a young age. When deciding to partner on that first performance, Charlotte’s Web, we never imagined that our support would help Arden Children’s Theatre become a cornerstone of the cultural life for families in this city—and one of the most renowned children’s theatres in the country. Our children enjoyed coming to Arden productions when they were youngsters and we’re glad your families are here today. And we didn’t stop there! Arden Children’s Theatre was the catalyst for the Arden’s education outreach program, Arden for All, which works with schools in Philadelphia, Camden, and Delaware County, serving thousands of students each year. When the Hamilton Family Arts Center opened in 2013, it became the permanent home for the Arden’s education programs, giving students the opportunity to explore their dreams with theatre professionals during quality afterschool and summer programs. Our family is thrilled to continue our investment in the Arden and the children in our region by helping to bring this production of Charlotte’s Web to the stage for a whole new generation. Through the imaginative work on stage and in education programs, the Arden engages children across our region in storytelling, literacy, and creativity; encouraging them to be curious, love reading, and become lifelong cultural participants — and we’re so happy to be a part of this special work. Enjoy! Alta and Peter Hamilton

WELCOME

from the Producing Artistic Director I’ll never forget the first time I heard Charlotte’s Web. I was in 3rd grade. Once a week, someone’s mom came to our school and we would all sit in a circle on the rug and listen to her read this story. She would read to us for a while. Then as a chapter would end, the mom would close the book and I can still so clearly remember thinking, ‘And then what happened?!” I couldn’t wait to hear what happened next. I thought it was the greatest story I had ever heard. When I was a kid, I loved plays and books and pets. I still do. Now I get to read books and think about if they’d make good plays. And I have five pets: three dogs, a cat and a horse. (No pigs, but my wife wants one someday. Plus a goat.) We’ve been doing plays for kids for 21 years, and the very first Arden Children’s Theatre play we did was Charlotte’s Web. I am so happy that we get to return to the Zuckerman barn. One of the things that makes a story great is that you want to keep telling it – and Charlotte’s Web is truly a great story. A group of people sitting in a circle listening to a story where every now and then we all lean in and wonder, “What’s going to happen next?!” Whether it’s listening to a story on the rug or gathered together in a theatre, it doesn’t get any better than that. Thanks for coming to see our play. We’re so glad that you are here.

P.S. Coming up this spring is a play based on another famous book, Treasure Island. In this brand new version, the swashbuckling tale is told through the eyes of a young girl who dreams of adventure. Treasure Island will be exciting, wildly creative and very funny. Come check it out!

Director's Notes My mother had a strange friend named Sylvia. No one else in the family knew Sylvia, but my mother talked about her a lot. As far as I could tell, Sylvia was an unusual presence in my mother’s life. A spiritual teacher of some sort, perhaps. One day I was introduced to Sylvia. I was 8-years old, maybe, and the meeting had been set up. Sylvia wore a colorful, mismatching outfit, had an up-do that I found beautiful, strings of beads, and dangly silver earrings. She definitely seemed mysterious. Sylvia gazed at me, head cocked to one side, eyes narrowed. She took hold of my hand. “Well. I can see you’re a very special boy,” she said. There was a pause. I’m not sure I mustered a thank you. That was the sum total of our interaction. My mother continued to chat privately with Sylvia while I waited. It was like I was struck by a tiny bolt of lightning. My hand remained lightly scented with her perfume for the rest of the day. Why do some childhood events linger forever? I have returned to that moment many times in my thoughts, often when I needed strength. Charlotte does just that for Wilbur. “You’re some pig,” says Charlotte. “Terrific”, “radiant”, “humble”. She writes it in a spider web, like a prophesy, and saves his life. Notice Charlotte doesn’t call Wilbur “extraordinary” or “amazing” or “genius”. Perhaps those words are not a favor. The great thing that Charlotte does – what Sylvia did for me – was simply to acknowledge a young person’s presence, and make sure the acknowledgement is heard. What Wilbur eventually becomes, what I have become, is left up to us. I hope that every child encounters someone in their lives – someone besides a parent, perhaps – who recognizes something special in them and makes a particular effort to let them know. Do someone a favor. Suddenly, out of the blue – when they least expect it – tell them that you are glad they exist. “You are important.” Tell the truth. Don’t make a fuss. Nothing more is necessary.
