WELCOME

from the Producing Artistic Director

There is no better way to start a new year than with a new play – and 74 Seconds…To Judgment is a terrific new play. 74 Seconds originally premiered on this very stage in the fall of 2017 when Kash Goins’ theatre company – GoKash Productions – was in residence here at the Arden. Excited and engaged by the questions raised in this provocative new work, I immediately asked Kash if we could produce his play as part of the Arden’s season. Fortunately, Kash and Amina Robinson, the director of that production as well, enthusiastically agreed. And so we begin 2019 with this new incarnation written and directed by two extraordinary Philadelphia artists. Next up will be our celebration of the work of August Wilson with Gem of the Ocean running on the Haas Stage and How I Learned What I Learned playing in the Bob and Selma Horan Studio Theatre at the Hamilton Family Arts Center. Gem of the Ocean, chronologically the first play of Wilson’s monumental American Century Cycle, will mark the Arden directorial debut of James Ijames, a Philadelphia theatre artist who was recently featured in The New York Times article, “Black Male Writers for Our Time” (Google this article!). How I Learned What I Learned will feature Philadelphia actor Kes Khemnu, who appeared in our productions of Wilson's Two Trains Running and The Piano Lesson, and will now play Wilson himself in this one-person memoir. Gem and How I Learned – two different perspectives on the genius of this remarkable playwright – please try to see them both. We are also kicking off our Leap of Faith campaign for the 2019/20 season! Your investment in Arden Theatre Company allows us to bring to life great stories by master storytellers such as August Wilson and new stories by great writers such as Kash Goins. We are committed to producing a wide range of stories – classics, musicals, exciting new plays – and next season will be no exception. If you are already an Arden subscriber, thank you. We are inspired by your commitment. If you are not a subscriber, we invite you to take the leap. Thank you for joining us for 74 Seconds...To Judgment. Thank you for joining in the conversation. Thank you for being part of this theatre.

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRODUCTION SPONSOR

For over a decade, Fox Chase Bank Charitable Fund has joined the Arden in their mission of telling great stories by great storytellers. Throughout our partnership, we have been particularly drawn to supporting daring, exciting new plays by some of our city’s most talented artists. We are proud to support 74 Seconds…To Judgment by Kash Goins as Production Sponsor. This story is an important one to share, as Goins invites us to ask questions about fear, inequality, and the definition of “justifiable homicide” in his play. The Board of Directors of Fox Chase Bank Charitable Fund is honored to sponsor this powerful and influential new work at Arden Theatre Company. We hope 74 Seconds…To Judgment moves you, and stays with you long after the final curtain call.

Tom Petro Chairman Fox Chase Bank Charitable Fund

THANK YOU TO OUR HONORARY PRODUCERS Theatre is a transformative and powerful means by which we experience strong emotions, often uplifting yet sometimes uncomfortable. Our values and beliefs are challenged. The continuing dialogue we have within ourselves or with those who have shared the play with us continues to affect our thoughts long after the story ends. 74 Seconds...To Judgment is a powerful and poignant play that is very topical for our time. It will facilitate conversation and spur deeper introspection; vital for us as individuals, as citizens and for the larger society. It is our pleasure to be honorary co-producers of this play along with Holly. The Arden has and continues to inspire us with stories that need to be told. -Robin and Saifuddin Mama When I first saw 74 Seconds...To Judgment in 2017, I immediately called anyone who would listen to me to run to the Arden and see this very pertinent, powerful, provocative production. Not only is the subject matter remarkably relevant but the writing, acting and directing are utterly compelling. I laughed and cried every time I saw it and debated the questions it raises with those who saw it with me. As soon as the Arden announced they would produce it this season, I asked to be an Honorary Producer. I have enjoyed a decade’s long relationship with the Arden and have been privileged to serve on the Board of Directors in my current capacity as Vice President. I love being a contributor to the Board and this theatre. The Arden is committed to bringing great stories to the stage, community and classroom. While that commitment from a very dedicated group of professionals is serious, we always find time to laugh and occasionally cry. On a personal note Amy Murphy and Terry Nolen have grown to be part of my family, or maybe more accurately I’ve become part of theirs. And, now I have forged a friendship with Kash and Tiffany Goins. We text and email each other often sharing compelling stories and articles we’ve read. We also share lots of laughs. And, I think Kash might be a bigger Eagles football fan than me. The Arden embodies so many qualities that exemplify the best the City of Philadelphia has to offer. It is for this reason I do not hesitate to provide financial support to the Arden and I encourage you to consider doing the same. -Holly Kinser

Director's Notes Phillando Castille, a Black man, was pulled over by police officer Jeronimo Yanez, and told that he had a broken tail light. Mr. Castille was in the car with his girlfriend, Diamond Reynolds, and her four-year-old daughter. It took seventy-four seconds for Jeronimo Yanez to decide that Phillando Castille was a danger to his life and kill him. Shot seven times while sitting in a car, next to his girlfriend, with a four-year-old girl in the back seat. This play is about us, right now. This play is about America, past and present. This play is the stuff we are made of. -Amina Robinson

POST-SHOW DISCUSSIONS

Throughout the run of 74 Seconds…To Judgment, we will be holding post-show conversations after each performance – a chance for artists and audiences to discuss and share perspectives about the play and the issues it raises. This is a play you’ll want to talk about, and we’re excited to provide an opportunity for you to do just that. We hope you’ll stay after the performance and be part of this discussion.

Make a Gift! It is only with the support of people like you that productions like 74 Seconds...to Judgment are brought to the Philadelphia stage. The Arden is a nonprofit organization and only 60% of our income comes from ticket sales which means we are relying on your support to continue this great work. From bold interpretations of classics to provocative new work, you play a leading role in bringing these stories to life. To show our appreciation, we are proud to offer the following benefits to our donors. Sylvan Society
