WELCOME from the producing artistic Director

Last season, we produced Bruce Norris’ Clybourne Park, a play inspired by A Raisin in the Sun and set in the home to which the Younger family is moving. During the run of Clybourne, we did a reading of Raisin on the Haas Stage. I thought I knew this play, but found myself surprised and deeply moved by the Younger family’s hopes and dreams – caught up in Lorraine Hansberry’s extraordinary story, written, remarkably, when she was still in her twenties. And the way that these two plays spoke to one another – the resonances and reverberations created – was incredibly powerful. During the reading, I wanted to tell the Younger family to re-think their move to Cybourne Park; Terrence J. Nolen that they deserved better; that the future was fraught...and still is. By the end of that evening, I realized that I needed to produce A Raisin in the Sun as part of this 25th Anniversary season. Clybourne Park went on to an acclaimed Broadway run last spring, receiving the Tony Award for Best New Play (along with the previously bestowed Pulitzer Prize and Olivier Award). Clybourne’s success sparked renewed interest in Hansberry’s masterwork; both plays are included in American Theatre magazine’s Top 10 Most Produced List for this year, with Raisin slated for 8 productions at theatres across the country and Clybourne scheduled for 15. In addition, Center Stage in Baltimore will be producing a new play entitled Beneatha’s Place, written by Kwame Kwei-Armah who has recently been appointed Center Stage’s new Artistic Director. Beneatha’s Place follows Beneatha Younger as she travels to 1959 colonial Nigeria with Asagai, and then returns to America. The reverberations continue. Construction of the Hamilton Family Arts Center (located three doors down 2nd Street towards Arch) continues to move forward. We’ll be offering tours of the new facility during the run of A Little Night Music – giving you the chance to get a sneak peek of this dramatic expansion. This building will give us the space to grow in so many ways: we will expand our new play development efforts, increase our classes and camps for kids, and significantly grow our educational programming. One of the first steps is the creation of Teen Arden, a new program that brings together teens from throughout the region who are passionate about theatre. We’ve long wanted to provide opportunities for teens; the Hamilton Family Arts Center will be their place: a place to gather, to share new ideas, to dream new dreams. Throughout our history, we’ve been drawn to plays that explore the story of the American family: Death of a Salesman, Next to Normal, Fences. I am honored to bring Lorraine Hansberry’s A Raisin in the Sun and the story of the Younger family to our stage, directed by Walter Dallas, an artist who has become such an important part of the Arden family.

P.S. Next season we know that we will be realizing two long-held dreams: the musical Parade, a riveting and emotional work based on the true story of the 1913 trial of Leo Frank; and a new translation of Three Sisters by Anton Chekhov. We will also produce the Philadelphia premiere of Lydia Diamond’s Stick Fly, a play about a wealthy African American family reuniting at their family home in Martha’s Vineyard. Please join us.

DIRECTOR’S Notes

What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up Like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a soreAnd then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar overLike a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags Like a heavy load. Or does it explode? --Langston Hughes

Walter Dallas would like to dedicate this production to the memory of his mentor, role model, and friend, Lloyd Richards, who staged the first production of A Raisin in the Sun in 1959.

a Message from our production Sponsor How fitting that this play, A Raisin in the Sun, be produced on Arden Theatre Company’s stage as part of their 25th Anniversary line-up! It is, after all, a play about dreams – big dreams! Audacious dreams! Seemingly impossible dreams! It is about the power of dreams to captivate us, to compel us, to unite us, and tragically, sometimes to divide us. Dreams are powerful as King Solomon proclaimed in antiquity – “Where there are no dreams, the people perish!” Thomas M. Petro

Dreams inspire hope and energize, yet it is the press of our circumstances which can weigh us down and crush the spark within. Frequently our dreams are left unfulfilled, unrealized, left to dry up like “a raisin in the sun.”

When A Raisin in the Sun first premiered on Broadway in 1959, it pioneered the opening of the American stage for African American actors. When the Arden opened its doors in 1988, it opened a way for actors to live and work in Philadelphia. Remarkably, as we cheer the 25th season of the Arden, the audacious dreams of our founding trio have not only been lavishly realized in a quarter century of great stories by great storytellers, but a new dream is also being realized before our eyes in the construction of the Hamilton Family Arts Center. There is so much to celebrate about this milestone and the imprint the Arden has made on our city and the community of artists and supporters birthed in her dream. But none of this would have been possible if Terry and Amy would have succumbed to those voices that demanded: “Eat your eggs!”

OLD CITY IS ONE OF

AMERICA’S TOP ARTPLACES This past November, Old City was named one of America’s Top 12 ArtPlaces in the nation by ArtPlace, a collaboration of leading national foundations, federal agencies including the National Endowment for the Arts, and six of the nation’s largest financial institutions. In selecting the top neighborhoods, ArtPlace examined districts in each of the 44 largest metropolitan areas in the United States and rated them according to the percentage of independent businesses in an area, an area’s ‘walkability score’, the percentage of workers in creative occupations, the number of arts-related businesses and the number of arts-related nonprofit organizations. “The impact the arts have had on the vibrancy and economy of Old City [is unmistakable],” said ArtPlace Director Carol Coletta. “This study shows how the arts can provide a foundation for a diversity of neighborhoods to thrive.” Old City has been dramatically transformed since the Arden moved to this neighborhood 17 years ago. Once a mix of empty warehouse spaces, converted lofts and a few galleries, the neighborhood has now become home to more than two dozen art galleries, several performing arts venues, quirky cafes, highly regarded restaurants, independent fashion boutiques and dozens of creative and tech businesses. “I chose Old City 15 years ago because of the eclectic mix of galleries, loft space and its artsy feel,” said Ellen Yin, owner of Fork Restaurant and Arden Board Member. “Since then, it’s become home to independent fashion retailers, design firms, and high-tech companies — but the things that initially drew me are still here.” The report credits Old City’s vibrant arts scene with transforming the neighborhood into a must-visit cultural destination. Alongside the Arden, the presence of First Fridays, the Painted Bride, Pentimenti Gallery, Fork Restaurant, Old City Coffee, the Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction store, the I-SITE internet marketing agency, and the Live Arts & Philly Fringe Festival, places Old City “at an exciting nexus of technology, design and the arts.” For a complete list of the Top 12 ArtPlaces, and the research that went into this study, visit ArtPlaceAmerica.org.

DRAMA SCHOOL Theatre classes for pre-k – grade 12

Arden Drama School is a fun place for kids to be creative and use their imaginations. Our classes and camps let kids work together to create and tell great stories.

Why do you like Arden Drama School?

Yannick Haynes, who plays Travis Younger in A Raisin in the Sun, has been attending our camps since 2009. Maureen Mullin Fowler, the Arden’s Education Director, sat down with Yannick to talk about Arden Drama School. Yannick joined Mayor Michael A. Nutter in announcing the Hamilton Family Arts Center Capital Campaign, March 2012

Yannick: I get to meet a lot of new people and see people from past camp sessions. We get to be creative, write our own plays, and design our own costumes.

What’s a great memory you have of camp? Yannick: I enjoyed the time I got to play President Barack Obama in our group’s play.

Do you have a favorite class? Yannick: I enjoy music class because we learn showtunes from Broadway shows.

Why would you tell your friends to come to Arden Drama School? Yannick: Arden Drama School is a lot of fun and you meet new people and make new friends.

Spring Semester and Summer Camps are enrolling now!

Teen Arden is a program for teens who love theatre. Members of the Albert M. Greenfield Foundation Teen Council have unlimited access to the Arden’s artistic process, participate in master classes with top theatre professionals, and take field trips to other theatres and cultural institutions. Albert M. Greenfield Foundation Teen Council members also attend all seven Arden shows – a night that includes a pre-show dinner party and post-show discussion with actors and designers. Teen Arden provides an opportunity for teens to connect with others like them who are passionate about theatre. Here is what our teens are saying about this program: “I love this program because I want to pursue a career in this field later in life!” – Jade, 12th grade “Teen Arden is a program that allows us to get involved in different aspects of theatre. We use our creativity and voice our ideas. I like Teen Arden because I am that person who wants to learn about theatre as a whole. I love acting but I’m also interested in directing, theatre management etc. I feel that Teen Arden says ‘yes, you can learn about that too.’” Chioma, 12th grade “Teen Arden is great. It gives me something productive to do after school. When I get a notification about a Teen Arden event, I make sure to change my schedule around it.” – Max, 10th grade.

First Fridays have been an Old City fixture for over 20 years. Last spring, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation named the Arden a winner of the Knight Arts Challenge for First Fridays – enabling us to invite performing arts groups to present work in our space. We’ve filled the Independence Foundation Studio with dance, music, theatre, and visual artists, introducing our audiences and the hundreds just passing by, to the work of these innovative performers. UPCOMING ARTISTS: The Beserker Residents – Friday, April 5 subcircle – Friday, May 3 Johnny Showcase and the Lefty Lucy Cabaret – Friday, June 7 To learn more about First Friday and these artists, visit ardentheatre.org – or just stop by on First Friday! We have free beer, courtesy of Yards Brewing Company and custom-made portraits by Max Perlman, the 7 year old son of the Arden’s Technical Director and Costume Supervisor. His sketches cost only $1. The Knight Arts Challenge is a matching grant, which means we have to raise $50,000 in designated gifts to receive their funding.Visit ardentheatre.org/ support and designate your gift to the Knight Arts Challenge.
