Raising Prison Labor Wages Campaign | Supporting Our Women

I reflect on the days, months, and years I was incarcerated. And though these times are more complicated, we have made significant progress with changing our justice system. The state prison population is below 100,000 people for the first time in 30 years. In the next year, (DVI) Tracy State prison will be closed and The Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ), or YA as many of us used to call it, facilities will begin to close and stop the intake of our youth.

Stay Connected

a letter from our Executive Director Sam Lewis Greetings to all of our community members who are currently incarcerated.

This year, ARC co-sponsored more legislation which Governor Newsom has signed into law. Senate Bill 203 will provide access to an attorney prior to young people waiving their Miranda rights while in police custody . Another new law, Assembly Bill 2147, allows people in fire camps to have their records expunged, clearing the way for them to obtain licenses such as an EMT license for firefighting. These are great accomplishments that have made our system more equitable, and though the system is getting smaller, my heart remains heavy for those that have passed away due to COVID-19. My heart also remains heavy for all the families that have not seen their loved ones. I think about this every day. As an organization, we are working and advocating every day for our people inside. We are here for each of you, and we will continue to support you. In these difficult and uncertain times, I humbly ask each of you to be kind to each other. Understand that this is difficult for everyone, especially those that remain incarcerated. As much as possible, be patient and supportive of each other. And always know that we are here for you and with you every step of the way. In Solidarity,

SAM LEWIS IS THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE ANTI-RECIDIVISM COALITION (ARC). A FORMER LIFE PRISONER, SAM UNDERSTANDS THE VARIOUS OBSTACLES THE PRISON AND REENTRY POPULATIONS FACE. IN 2017, SAM CREATED THE HOPE AND REDEMPTION TEAM (HART), A GROUP OF NINE FORMER CALIFORNIA LIFE PRISONERS WHO GO BACK INTO CALIFORNIA STATE PRISONS TO PROVIDE HOPE, DEMONSTRATE THAT REDEMPTION IS ACHIEVABLE, AND TO PREPARE PARTICIPANTS FOR SUCCESSFUL REENTRY INTO OUR COMMUNITIES.
