Pop The Shop Jordan Sambrookes Lyceum 2020: PopTheShop - Bungalows providing opportunities of the future. Faculty Advisor: Terry Boling “PopTheShop” introduces a new use for a type of Chicago home that has fallen out of demand in the markets, the bungalow. The site that these bungalows will be going into is in the South Side of Chicago in the Greater Grand Crossing area. Currently, these homes are being utilized for residential, but there are many vacant bungalows in the South Side of Chicago. In my proposal, with the help of non-profits in Chicago, these bungalows will be stripped of their former use of a home and turned into learning programs. With the high school and college dropout rates being so high in this part of Chicago, our organization thought of ways to encourage students in school and show them new skills that they can apply in their own lives. PopTheShop currently, is planning on building four different programs throughout four different bungalows. These programs include: Steve Harvey’s Boys Club and mentorship program, Woodworking, cooking and gardening, and welding. The first two will be done in the fall The first, The Steve Harvey’s Boys Club, which will provide young children a safe place to be able to do school work with the opportunity of going through the mentorship program. A lot of the children in this area grow up without a male role model, but through this mentorship program, children can have someone to idolize. The second, Chicago Bungalow School of Woodworking, where students will be able to learn craft through beginning exercises and understand how to use the tools. Through experience, students are able to have more freedom in the shop to build what they want and use or potentially sell their work. The goal of PopTheShop is to allow students to see the skills that hold, but never realize. Through these programs, we hope that students are able to find a passion through a new find skill and use that throughout their lives.
