“As an architecture student I believe that designing spaces is more than just about creating functional spaces, I believe it takes more of creating a meaningful experience that can be portrayed through atmospheric qualities of design form and materiality in conjuction with its function. In this portfolio I present selected work that reflects on my past four academic years in the architecture program.”

The Story

DSM Election Center begins with a preliminary research on the history of Redlining and voter turnout of desenfranchised minority neighborhoods in downtown Des Moines. The effects of such detrimental moments in history had long term impacts on elections and voter turnouts as far as today. From this investigation we developed voting kiosks that could be deployed in and around the city.

These modular kiosks could be assembled by the communities where they would be deployed as an effort to allow communities to directly engaged in the election process. As a result, this project became the main narrative of which we strived to implement in the final curation and design of our election center.

As part of the structural design system for the election center, CLT was used to reflect on the previous design of the kiosks. The integration of this structure type was to humble the building at the level of the people, creating a sense of temporarity and not permanance as oppose to current government buildings.

Concept: The Story

Vertical Hub

The idea in this residential complex was to elevate the community engagement along with the private sectors, which include private living units and co-living units, to come in direct contact with public areas among residents. We accomplished this by placing the common house at the entrance to influence the occupants’ circulation through the community spaces as they arrive. This would enable more interaction between residents on a daily basis.

Due to the implementation of a Food Hub as part of the project’s design, it became very important for proximity reasons to understand the proper orientation for the building and street level access to commercial spaces. This, in order to connect in the area with other ongoing activities of the city.

Concept: The Story

A post-catastrophy design

Based on science fiction of the Monumento Continuo proposal from Supper-Studio, I developed the stage for what could become a monolithic structure of a futuristic human inhabitation. A monument in which human activities are concentrated within this mega structure and separated in districts or zones. It also sets the stage for what could mean designing in a post disaster situation in order to preserve the continuity of the monument throughout time.

A monolithic structure that emerges from the face of the Earth and continues its expansion around from it.

28

How could the continuity of a massive, singular monolithic structure be maintain on a planet composed of tectonic plates that constantly move and shift over the pass of time?

Other Work

This work was produced using 3Ds Max to explore a series of methods for generating architectural artifacts, models, and other types of architectural elements. These software aided designs were also influenced by organic forms of nature as inpiration.
