Admissions Process

College Counseling

Helping Students Get Where They Want to Go The College Counseling Department focuses on the strengths of each individual student, making every effort to help students find a challenging collegiate environment that will make them better students as well as match their individual personalities and career goals.

1. Take the Entrance/Scholarship Exam. If you have a conflict with the Saturday testing date, an alternate date is offered. A $40 registration fee is payable on the day of the exam. Preregistration is necessary. Results are sent within two weeks after the exam.

The Department also provides a comprehensive resource for parents as they assist their children in the college search.

The office meets with students and parents in the junior year in both individual and group conferences, provides a bi-monthly college exploration seminar, and offers access to the leading web-based college advisement system. In the students’ senior year, individual conferences continue, presentations are made by 100+ colleges, the office assists with the preparation of academic profiles, and all completed applications are reviewed and mailed by the Counseling Department.

2. Complete an application for admission. A complete application includes an official transcript of the student’s grades and completion of two ADVIS Recommendation Forms. There is a nonrefundable application fee of $50.

3. Schedule an interview with the Admissions Office. Students and their families who complete an application are asked to interview with a member of the admissions committee. The 2014 Open House will be held on Sunday, November 16 beginning promptly at 1:00 PM. You will talk with students, faculty, and administration on your tour.

The 8th grade entrance exam will be held on Saturday, December 6 from 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM.

Beginning Monday, October 6 8th graders and potential transfer students are invited to spend the day as an Archmere student.

Admission Criteria Admission is competitive and based on a combination of the student’s elementary school record, teacher recommendations, performance on the entrance exam and the personal interview. Of the approximately 310 students who applied for admission into Class of 2017, 135 entered Archmere the fall of 2013. Although these young men and women come from diverse socioeconomic, ethnic, religious and academic backgrounds, they have much in common. All are motivated students of above average ability. The average entrance exam score equates to a National Norm of 93%. Every student has been involved in extracurricular activities.

Archmere’s rigorous college preparatory program offers a variety of core and elective courses in the arts, humanities, mathematics, sciences and technology.

The academic disciplines foster critical thinking skills, strengthen analytical reasoning and foster intellectual creativity in all departments: English; Math; Physical and Life Sciences; History; Foreign Languages; Computer Science; Religion; Art; Music; and Special Programs including Driver Education, Health, Physical Education, and Yearbook. Archmere offers A.P. course work in 19 areas.

Archmere encourages the well-rounded student, firmly believing that students who develop a wide range of experiences and skills will find the greatest success. Because of its small size, Archmere students are able to balance their academic schedules with options to play sports and participate in the arts, as well as become active members in a number of clubs or activities depending on their interests.

Although student involvement in athletics is voluntary, approximately 85% of the student body competes in interscholastic sports. Our dedicated athletic staff views coaching as a professional commitment and the Archmere athletic experience as an extension of classroom learning. In recent years, Archmere’s athletic facilities include two Sprinturf fields; a renovated gym and field house; redesigned baseball, softball and soccer fields; and a fitness center that surpasses most secondary schools.

Musical performing groups exist for all levels of experience, including, stage band, lab band, concert band, chorus, annual dramatic and musical productions, and Archmere Mastersingers (by audition). Archmere has a beautiful Performing Arts Center consisting of a 750 seat auditorium, a band room, and choral room, with multiple practice rooms.

Who is Saint Norbert?

Passion for Learning Saint Norbert dedicated his life to instilling passion for learning by founding the Norbertine Order which established school communities in the United States beginning in 1898.

In the summer of 1932, the Norbertine Order founded Archmere Academy.

A Place that Never Leaves You Known for his hospitality and his life of service to others, Saint Norbert inspires school communities that are welcoming and warm, giving people “a sense of place” and belonging. Archmere embraces this tradition whole-heartedly, recognizing that what inspires students most to achieve are the relationships they form while they are here. Many alumni describe Archmere as, “a place that never leaves you,” or “a place you take with you wherever you go in life.”

A Catholic Community of Faith As a community of faith Archmere celebrates its Catholic heritage and the Norbertine charism, united by the importance placed on community, respect, zeal, reverence and wisdom. Saint Norbert dedicated his life to the community and his Catholic faith, as demonstrated by his countless good works and love of prayer. In the spirit of our faith we pass on Saint Norbert’s teachings of service to the community; respect for all; zeal for learning; reverence and prayer as a source of strength and support; and wisdom through individual growth.

Committed, Caring Teachers Archmere’s greatest asset is its committed faculty, an experienced and talented group of women and men dedicated to academic excellence. In the classroom, faculty members focus on a rigorous college-prep curriculum dedicated to developing critical thinking skills, intellectual questioning and academic discipline.

The faculty engage students on a personal level in a small classroom setting, and teachers help guide the students to become organized, self-motivated, and ultimately, independent learners. Teachers are accessible throughout the school day, before school, during school free periods and after school until 4:30 p.m.

Archmere faculty members are also actively engaged in the students’ lives outside the classroom. Teachers serve as academic advisors, mentors, activity moderators and athletic coaches, helping students to extend their values beyond the classroom.

Technology, Resources, and Facilities Support Learning Archmere’s technology facilities and curriculum engage students at all levels. The 1:1 laptop program provides each student with a MacBook Pro laptop, as well as a back-up drive. A school-wide network connects campus buildings and resources to each other and to the Internet, and the entire Archmere campus is wireless. Teachers use a hands-on approach in the integration of computers and academics, incorporating technology throughout the curriculum from graphic design in art class to electronic research.

Students have access to multiple resources to support their learning, including: a Library; Foreign Language Labs; The Tech Center; The Writing Center; The Multimedia Center; and The Justin E. Diny Science Center.

Dedicated solely to the physical and life sciences, the Science Center contains six classroom/laboratory facilities, a state-of-the-art two-story physics lab, and a greenhouse. Student laptops supplement classroom work through computer assisted labs, dissections, simulations and tutorials via a wireless network, and many teachers are using electronic textbooks.

Archmere’s Manor building is entirely dedicated to the visual arts; our facilities and curriculum rival many university art programs. The Manor has three floors of studio space, including: painting and drawing studios; ceramic and pottery studios; a dark room photography lab; and three computer studios which address the technological aspect of the visual arts, with digital design and computer graphics as an integral part of the program.

Guidance Services College Counseling The College Counseling Department is available to all students and their families twelve months out of the year. Archmere’s rigorous curriculum prepares students to excel at the university level and the College Counseling Office assists students in navigating the college admission and application process. The goal of the college counseling program is to promote student growth and to assist students in finding the college with the best academic, extracurricular, and social fit for them.

Our college counselors, with extensive college admission experience, become involved in each student’s experience from their freshman year through graduation.

Year-round dynamic programming is available to all students and their families. Program topics include college list formation, campus visit and interview preparation, composition of college essays, career discussions, and college athletic recruitment. In addition, representatives from over 100 colleges and universities will visit Archmere during their fall recruitment process, giving students direct access and personalized attention from college admission professionals.

College counselors work with each student, examining how schools make admisisons decisions and helping students to understand the strategic side of college applications to maximize their success. At Archmere, we believe that having continual college discussions and offering counseling throughout the entire high school career will reduce the stress level associated with the college admissions process. Less stress and more preparation will equip students with the necessary tools to make the best possible college decisions and will maximize each student’s success.

Counseling Services Archmere Academy features four full-time counselors on staff to assist in helping students succeed academically and to provide support for social and emotional development. Each certified counselor is assigned a class and stays with those students from freshman year through graduation. The goal of the counselors is to get to know each student on an individual basis and help them achieve academic success, personal growth, and happiness. Through regular one-on-one meetings with students as well as an annual Activities Fair, counselors guide and encourage student involvement in clubs and extra-curricular activities.

In addition, the Counseling Department works closely with the Archmere Alumni Association to provide an opportunity for our students to learn about various career options. Career day, held each spring for the Junior Class, features alumni and other local professionals on campus speaking with students in small groups. Career Experience Day is held each fall for the Senior Class and provides students with the opportunity to shadow a professional in a field of their interest.

Advanced Placement Program Our Successful Advanced Placement Curriculum Archmere is proud of its 30-year history with the College Board A.P. Program. For over three decades our students have excelled both regionally and nationally, consistently meriting the College Boardâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s highest A.P. Scholar awards and college credits toward their future undergraduate studies. Archmereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s dedicated and passionate A.P. teachers implement a college-paced curriculum with a demanding, rigorous work load.

The success of our A.P. curriculum is a clear indication of the value of an Archmere education. Colleges and universities often rely on a strong A.P. Program to help distinguish the strength of a schoolâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s curriculum and a studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s course of study at the national level. STEM Resources One to One Laptop Program Archmere is one of a few select schools nationally to be recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for the success and effectiveness of its one-to-one laptop program. All students receive a MacBook Air laptop as part of this program, which provides all students with equal access to technology, allows faculty the flexibility to further integrate technology throughout the curriculum, and focus on developing 21st Century skills such as collaborative learning, multimedia presentations, and digital literacy. The MacBook Airs feature a full suite of software including the Adobe Creative Suite (which includes Photoshop, Dreamweaver, InDesign, and Fireworks), iWork, Office, LoggerPro, Geometerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Sketchpad, iBooks, and much more. Students also receive a 500GB external drive on which they are able to back up their work; they will keep these drives after graduation so that they can retrieve their work in college. Archmere strongly believes that student self-management of technology resources is an important component of a true college prep process today.

The Justin E. Diny Science Center Dedicated solely to the physical and life sciences, this building contains six classroom/laboratory facilities and a greenhouse. Classroom and laboratory work are completed through computer assisted labs, dissections, simulations and tutorials via a wireless network. In addition, the building is equipped with a state-of-the-art two-story physics lab with custom-made frictionless tables and a platform rigging system to conduct experiments. Science classes incorporate centrifuges, PCR machines, electrophoresis equipment, an autoclave and a gas chromatograph.

STEM Clubs and Curriculum Archmere recognizes the importance of science, technology, engineering and mathematics as part of a 21st century education. In addition to its rigorous core curriculum in the areas of math and science, including 8 AP classes, students have the opportunity to take electives in app development, computer programming, and more. Beyond the classroom, students can join any of several clubs dedicated to further developing their talents and interests in technology and engineering such as Robotics, TEAMS (Tests of Engineering Aptitude in Math and Science), Science Olympiad, and Math League. These clubs regularly compete at the state, regional and national levels. Archmereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s TEAMS club placed within the top 10 nationally in 2014, Robotics competed regionally, and Science Olympiad placed 2nd in the state of Delaware in 2014.

Expenses Tuition Tuition for the 2014-2015 academic year is $23,380, which includes library, athletic, yearbook and all regular school fees. In addition, there is a $400 technology fee due in September for the one-to-one laptop program

Books and Uniforms Estimates for new books range from $300 to $400, depending upon the studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s academic schedule. Uniforms range in price from $200 to $300 and can be purchased on campus in the spring or ordered directly from the vendor.

Transportation Archmere is conveniently located in North Wilmington, just a couple of minutes from the PA border and 10 minutes from NJ, just over the Commodore Barry Bridge.

The Archmere shuttle service routes in Delaware cover the Greenville/Hockessin/Newark and the Bear/Middletown/ Dover areas. Another shuttle service runs to New Jersey, serving the Mullica Hill area. In addition, Archmere also runs a shuttle down the Blue Route in Pennsylvania, servicing students from Newtown Square, Havertown and the Drexel Hill area. The annual fee ranges from $3,000 to $4,000. One-way options are available.

Some public school districts in Chester and Delaware Counties in Pennsylvania provide free bus transportation to Archmere students living in these areas: Chester-Upland, Chichester, Garnet Valley, Interboro, Penn Delco, Wallingford-Swarthmore, Ridley, Rose Tree-Media, Springfield, Unionville-Chadds Ford and West Chester. Most buses leave campus at 4:50 P.M. on regular school days to accommodate student involvement in activities and after-school functions.

Scholarships and Grants Scholarship and Grant Criteria Scholarships and grants are awarded based on superior academic performance and financial need.

Approximately 65% of the incoming Class of 2018 was awarded scholarship and/or tuition assistance. Students with superior performance on the entrance examination and a strong academic record are awarded a $2,000 annual scholarship. Archmere also offers several larger academic scholarships based on a combination of the studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s entrance exam score, school record and interview. No athletic scholarships are awarded.

Any additional financial awards are need-based grants. Students with strong academic performance whose families are eligible for financial aid must submit an application and their latest IRS 1040 form to the School Scholarship Service by mid-January in order to help determine the value of the grant. Grants do not exceed one-half of tuition.

The Diversity Scholarship Program The program affords the opportunity of an Archmere education to gifted students of traditionally under-represented populations whose families demonstrate financial need. Students who meet Archmereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s academic qualifications and complete the standard admissions process can receive significant four-year grants based on financial need.

Distrcit Bus Routes Service the Following Areas: t Pennsylvania public school districts in Chester and Delaware Counties within 10 miles of Archmere provide free bus transportation to Archmere students living in these areas: Chester-Upland, Chichester, Garnet Valley, Interboro, Penn Delco, WallingfordSwarthmore, Ridley, Rose Tree-Media, Springfield, UnionvilleChadds Ford, and West Chester.

The Archmere shuttles are brand new Nissan NV3500 HD 12-passenger vans and 24-passenger Champion Challenger vans by Ford, equipped with additional side and curtain airbags, rearview monitor, and seat belts for every passenger, as well as USB connection ports for Mac devices. They are driven by experienced, Archmere-employed drivers.

Faith and Service Campus Ministry The goal of the Campus Ministry Office is to sustain a school-wide effort to foster spirituality, community, and service among students, faculty, staff, and administration. This vibrant program provides opportunities for students, regardless of religious background, to grow and develop spiritually. Campus Ministry organizes class retreats to foster greater unity within the student body. Monthly liturgies bring the entire school together to celebrate Mass as a community. Daily Kenosis, a brief optional prayer reflection before lunch, provides students with the opportunity to center themselves during the hectic school day. In addition, students may opt to attend daily Mass in the beautiful Oratory.

For juniors and seniors, the Kairos retreat offers a unique life-affirming spiritual experience. The Campus Ministry program is a vital extension of the Archmere Academy mission to develop the whole person as it seeks to meet each studentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s individual need to grow on both a personal and communal level.

Communiy Service Archmere Academyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Community Service program offers organized outreach opportunities three times per week, supporting four major outreach sites. Students travel to House of Joseph, which serves those with advanced stages of illness; a soup kitchen in Philadelphia where students will serve meals tableside; Knollwood Community Center, where Archmere students tutor elementary school children; and a daycare center where students help care for children from the infant stages through age five. In addition to the regular outreach programs, the Community Service club also runs three canned food drives per school year to support three local food banks at Claymont Community Center, Knollwood, and Holy Rosary. There are also opportunities for service within the Archmere community through the annual Blood Drive, Tag Days to raise money for various charities, a Sunday Breakfast Mission and more.

All students are encouraged to participate in the community service program as often as they can; participation is open and flexible to accommodate our studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; busy schedules.

However, those who wish to get more involved have 17 leadership opportunities within the larger Community Service organization at Archmere. We at Archmere believe that through service to others, our students will learn to become empathetic leaders.
