DOING THE

NEW BEGINNING After just graduating college with a Master of Architecture degree, gosh doesn’t that sound fancy, I had no idea what I was going to do next.

See this degree was a six-year long commitment and a goal of mine since the 7th grade, so every goal and decision I made revolved around getting through school. My vision, however, seemed to stop there. I just assumed I would get an internship at a great firm and work my way up. That was until February 14th, 2020 when I found out my husband and I were expecting a baby in October.

With eight months until graduation and possibly my hardest two semesters yet, being thesis project and all, I would have to make some new decisions. Would I be a stay at home mom? I have so much respect for SAHM, but that life is just not for me. Would I find a firm to work a nine to five every day? This is a hard one to answer because this was the original plan, however I want to be with my baby. So, what now? I focus on school, prepare for graduation, life with a new baby, and all while in a freaking world pandemic of course. October, I gave birth to Layla and December I graduated.

If you know anything about architecture school, you know there are portfolios created and submitted every year or so to advance into the next portion of the program. I really enjoyed the design aspect of this and would probably spend

more time looking at magazines for inspiration than past portfolios. Sorry Bob McLeod. There lies the idea for starting my own magazine. Of course, my passion still resides in architecture but also art and interior design and wood working and photography and traveling and... Dang how do I combine my love for all of these while still being able to be in Layla’s daily life? Boom. My ultimate dream job.

Here is to a new year, a new job, and a new family. Welcome to the artsy mess that is my brain, I hope you find something useful and learn something cool.

In the world of residential architecture many things have been changing. Here in the US we have been in this “open floor plan� overload. The year 2020 really threw us for a loop and many people have had to move back home or have multiple families in one home. A house is not just a house anymore. It is an office, a school, a playground, and a place to relax when possible. So functionally open floor plans no longer are relevant in the world of architecture. The needs have changed to needing more walls for separation, and this is not a bad thing. It gives designers an opportunity to create clever and innovative ways to design multipurpose spaces that still can look aesthetically pleasing.

Speaking of aesthetics it seems to me that soft lines and rounded edges are making a comeback as well as archways inside of the home. It makes for a calmer space so when the days and schedules are hectic, there are clean smooth lines that are not distracting to the eye.

TRENDY INTERIOR DESIGN

When it comes to interior design the past couple years have been about white on white on white. This year is about color, specifically in the kitchen. The excitement can be found not just in the colorful backsplash but the cabinets as well. Colorful patterned tile on the floor mixed with a statement island is also a great way to bring the joy back into the kitchen. Not to mention the patterned tile will hide dirt that has not been swept in three days much better than white.

ALL THINGS TRENDY

A brand-new trend this year is exciting to me because I have not seen it done very often. Graphic ceilings. Utilizing the ceiling as an accent wall brings the eyes up and can make a space look larger. Painting the ceiling a bold bright color while the living room stays a neutral zone can be fun. This also brings the opportunity for some pattern, maybe wallpaper on the ceiling to add even more interest.

TRENDY FASHION

When it comes to fashion, it seems to be rolling over from 2020 with the cozy, comfy clothing. Matching sweat suits in nude and pastel colors. No more tie die. Sorry those of you who spent hours and hours replicating tik tok videos on how to tie die in your bathtub. These comfy clothes should also not only be oversized but SUPER oversized, to the point where it feels like you are wearing a blanket to target.

To match the oversized sweats but give it a put together look just add chunky sneaker, large framed sunglasses, and the largest earrings you can find. Do not forget the matching mask.

TRENDY FOOD Desserts and Shows If you are anything like me and like to see the architecture in everything, then you are in the right magazine. When it comes to food it can be not only seductive but also very architectural. No, I do not just mean in those Food Network shows where they have a mechanical moving Ferris wheel where everything on it is edible. I am talking about the way that a beautifully made six layered, exposed cake reminds me of the way that a building in designed. Layer by layer each element of a building coming together to create something to be experienced.

If you are a fan of art in anyway then I highly recommend the Netflix show “Chef’s Table.” In each episode you get to meet a chef (or in this case, an artist) and explore how they got to where there are. My favorite must be Volume 4: Pastry, Christina Tosi. She is a pastry chef that started Milk Bar from her love of junk food. I was lucky enough to have visited it the last time I was in New York and I have to say it is incredible. The cerealmilk ice cream is unexpectedly delicious. Christina was also featured on a newer Netflix series called “The Chef Show” with Jon Favreau. She teaches Jon how she would take on classic bake sale items and it looks nothing like any bake sale I have ever been to.

Lunawood Urban Challenge “Lunawood Urban Challenge 2021 calls on all students to re-imagine and redesign urban enviornments by using Lunawood Thermowood.

This competition’s purpose is to highlight the vast possibilities of wood as a modern building material that helps create a healthier and more sustainable enviornment. Thus, we can reconnect nature with urban people. This is the second time that Lunawood is looking for innovative and sustainable ideas with Lunawood Urban Challenge. In 2019, nearly 90 participants took up the challenge and we witnessed the most amazing implementations from all around the world. Once again, the participants have an opportunity to show their vision and skills in rebuilding the urban enviornment. The emphasis of Lunawood Urban Challege is on original thinking, creativity, and visual expression.”

Lunawood is the global market leader and pioneer in sustainable Thermowood solutions. They have launched an international competition that allows students to use their creativity and challege them to use innovative wood products on decorative applications and accomplish international reputation.

EOTM Being in this crazy pandemic has not totally been all bad. Not only are we at the peak of connecting online but it has inspired so many artists to take the leap into entrepreneurship and starting their own businesses. I had the pleasure of communicating (via social media and email) with Hannah Moore. An architecture student at the University of South Florida and the lovely free spirit that is the owner of HanMoCo earrings.

Getting right into the questions I of course wanted to know how she got started selling earrings and her response, “I’ve always loved eclectic earrings and have talked about starting an earring business for a long time. I was never serious about actually doing it until recently. Finding I have so much more free time, because of the pandemic,” She explains how she was inspired seeing others jump into the small business world on tiktok and instagram. I was also curious as to how she made them, and she described a process starting with a silicone mold she received in a secret santa gift exchange. “Shout out to Michael ‘Stevenson’ So I started making earrings just for fun and to give as gifts this past Christmas.” The earrings are poured resin with glitter and acrylic paint for color into the molds. Hannah explains “It just made sense to open an Etsy store after making so many earrings, I was hooked!” She describes how she wants her store to have “a fun pop art vibe and that is what inspires the colors and styles.” I could not agree more, the earrings are simply put funky, with emphasis on the ‘fun’.

When Hannah was asked why she chose Etsy as the platform to sell her earrings, she responded with, “I would have never opened an Etsy shop if it wasn’t for a few friends that I’ve watched open their own online businesses.” Which she was talking about Austine Le and her mask making business, Tintieco (@tintieco on instagram). Another being Nikki Stephens (@niknaknailsbynikki) “started selling custom presson nails so people could be safe and stay away from nail salons.” “If it was not for them, I wouldn’t have had the confidence to start my own thing.”

I then asked Hannah why Etsy, there are so many other platforms these days I wanted to know. Her response, “I chose Etsy because of the ability to easily organize everything I have in stock. I thought it would help me find new customers if they are browsing the website already and it’s easy to see how many visits

THE FUNKY FRESH EARRINGS

When I asked Hannah if it was hard to advertise herself, she humbly responded with “I have found that it is hard to start something like this because there are so many other talented people out there already.

But I enjoy making the earrings to I am excited to see how far I can grow this!” She explained that she does not see herself so much as an entrepreneur, “I am just enjoying making things for other people.” She is just the sweetest. I wanted to know more about the style and how she chose what I would call a very 70s inspired collection and her response, “As I say on my Etsy shop, I sell Funky Fresh earrings! The style is colorful and playful. I don’t want to limit myself by sticking to a strict style but if they look fun, I think they fit in to my aesthetic.”

This made me question why stop at earrings? I asked Hannah if she would expand into other pieces of jewelry and she replied, “Personally, earrings are my main

I am getting.” Which is very true about Etsy, it can be a great starting point for beginner business owners being that it already has the foot traffic. Miss Moore expanded by saying, “I would love to try to sell at arts markets or other popp-up shops. It would be fun to meet people and connect with customers.” I really do hope that is in her future!

love when it comes to jewelry. Since I started HanMoCo for my own enjoyment, I think I’ll be sticking to earrings for now. But, I have been looking into using different materials to make them. So, stay tuned for new collections over the next few weeks.” That sounds just great to me because that means there is heart put into each pair and I can respect anyone who puts passion over business.

So, what does the future look like for Hannah and HanMoCo? “I wish I knew what the future holds for me! I’m going to be working at an architecture firm hopefully after graduation and I’m sure if I still have extra time HanMoCo will still be going strong.”

As an architecture graduate myself, I was curious to ask Hannah how the curriculum has influenced her with the earring collection.

She responded with, “Architecture school has helped me with presentation of my art, with specific skills like creating cohesive concepts and photography of the final products.

School has helped me refine design skills in general while giving me the confidence and knowledge to tackle any goal I have.”

Being so excited after talking with Hannah I of course had to purchase a pair myself! I went with the diamond studs in the color “Disco Night.” Not only are the earrings great quality and beautiful, the packaging is adorable and have a personal touch. You will definitely have to go and get some of your own and they also make great gifts!

When I was pulling out of Taco Bell, ready to make the turn into the office, to my dismay I saw caution tape across it and noticed strangely that there was a strip of new cement and asphalt. It was about 10 ft by 2 ft, hardly enough to cover the parking lot, and the office itself has been unoccupied for months and looks decrepit. I wonder if someone spied the secret spot rising in popularity and put the kibosh on it.

The second thing that comes to mind is the waterfront park near my house, facing the bay that has a big beautiful culdesac people go park in and stare out into the ocean from during their lunch breaks. Unfortunately during covid it’s been closed. Why I don’t know. It’s a shame because the park’s parking lot itself is accessible and that’s fine but really the place to be is facing the water.

During covid little getaway escapes like that are important. There’s another one in my town, tucked away in the back of a development

on a hill where you can park on a dead-end, peer over a metal grate and see through to a clearing of trees where there’s a baseball field, a nice big baseball field with bleachers and kept yellow sand and an ice cream shop just beyond it. It’s a really nice view. I feel like going there. Everyone I know has been taking drives to clear their head and scout partly forgotten, rarely visited parking oases. Now that it’s winter, they’re all the more important.

Can’t go for walks too easily unless you’re prepared to wrap up in a cobra coil scarf.

It’s Valentine’s Day soon and my girlfriend and I want to go somewhere to celebrate. We’ve been jokingly talking about running to Atlantic City and getting something to eat and putting a couple coins in a slot machine. It’s hopefully safe from covid, with the big casino lobbies and all and a lot of room for social distancing.

It’s a joke but the more I think about places to go and ways to make it special, the more empty-handed I am and the more it seems like a possibility.

We’ve all become really familiar with our buildings haven’t we? Staring at the same four walls or four rooms, making laps around the kitchen island and lifting weights in front of the TV. Luckily my girlfriend and I have absorbed one another’s households as safe places so we at least have doubled our square footage.

GETAWAYS, HIDEAWAYS, AND STAY AWAYS

What do I know about architecture? I am partial to buildings. They’re very warm. Especially in the winter. The first building that comes to mind is Taco Bell because I just came from there for lunch. The building next to it is in an abandoned office of some sort and up until today I would go over there, park, and face the highway and eat. The Taco Bell parking lot is always packed and the office building has this one single parking spot, a perfect inlet flanked by grass that gives me a nice shot of the grand mall across from it and specifically the Hibachi restaurant with its huge glass windows and a big poster of a chef wearing the tall white hat with his arms crossed holding a knife and fork. I noticed that sign for the first time a few months ago and thought, “Has he always been there? I couldn’t possibly have missed him but I don’t remember.”

I think when this is all over we’ll all appreciate places much much more. Message to architects: go and build because your stuff will be appreciated. We need newness. We crave new rooms. Give us more interesting roofs to sit under. Even a Taco Bell parking spot will do.

We are renting a home from my cousin and his girlfriend and they have graciously allowed us to do the projects we want. For those ten years I have been bouncing from apartment to my parents’ home to more apartments, so this is really exciting. Currently the house is nice, it has hard wood floors, (when I say hard wood I mean vinyl) newer bathrooms, and a huge backyard. It is a 2 bedroom / 2 bathroom, 950 sqft block-built home with attached garage.

Not my dream home but definitely a fun project and starter home for my family of three with two dogs. The gold in the house besides the giant backyard, is the spacious living room. That means room for a sectional sofa and also toy storage for the little one. Not to mention plenty of wall space for a gallery wall. Since its two artists living together let’s just say we have a crapload of art. There is also this blank wall that is just screaming for a projector for the ultimate movie and tv watching experience. The adjacent wall to the “soon-to-be” movie wall is the dining room which I have plans for a built in dining nook with “L” shaped benches and a round pedestal table.

The second bedroom is where some

magic is going to happen because we have to come up with a way for it to function as my husband’s office and my daughter’s nursery. My husband owns a flytying business, Shadowline Fly Company, and so a ton of storage is a necessity. To also add, he can be a bit of a hoarder. Since my daughter will still be sleeping in our room for a little while longer we have the opportunity to create a built-in partition wall down the middle. Moving on to the master bedroom the closet will need the most work. It is a standard closet that once had bifold doors, however, I have dreams of a closet with built-ins. Lots of drawers and oppourtunity for proper organization. Yes, I really do have dreams of organizing, don’t you?

Landscaping will most likely be the last thing we work on, but I am looking forward to the transformation the most.

I have a special place in my heart for landscape design and plants. In the back of the house there is a sliding glass door that exits from the dining room onto a concrete slab. It is the perfect place for an outdoor patio that of course will include a pergola with some viney greenery like it was sent to Florida straight from Italy. In two weeks, we will be heading down to start painting and the design process. I will continue to document our progress so stayed tuned.

RENOVATION STATION

Currently as I write this, I am surrounded by boxes due to my husband and I moving from Tampa to Sarasota, Florida. We have known we would settle down in Sarasota pretty much the span of our ten-year relationship. However, it is surreal that its actually happening.
