An overall understanding of how straw and clay can be used as building materials seems to be a crucial need for the prosperity and wealth of modern societies when the building sector in the US contributes to 37.7% of the total energy consumption and 68% of the total gas consumption in Europe comes from building stocks. Whether structures made of clay and straw comply with local regulations for the energy consumption and indoor climate remains an open question. Straw, a natural waste material being in abundance was examined as a building insulating material.
The investigation uses a variety of different methods such as literature research, simulations, study cases, experiments, a global internet survey and data analysis in order to answer fundamental questions that could help us take a more serious look into non conventional building techniques.
