Local Community Identity

The local community are attached to their heritage as farmers. Most of the occupancy of the village work in agriculture or in the govermental sector. Many horses can be noticed in the village, which are used for agricultural purposes, and to commute from a place to another.

Hisban

The project aims to protect the heritage of Hisban; both the tangible and intangible by developing a sustainable tourism attraction at Hisban. This is achieved by providing a journey that takes the users and visitors through the rich interconnected layers existing within the site. Local community involvement and meeting local demands to increase positive interaction between the hosting community and the visitors or users form a main pillar of this proposal. Hence, creating a sustainable touristic attraction by reusing buildings dating back to the ottoman regime in the area, and by introducing new meanings of these spaces and voids. Here the old is not replicated physically nor directly. But instead, its phenomenology is extracted and reintroduced within new inspired additions and adapted functional programs, linking both the new and old in a comprehensive whole to tell our story and the stories of the past.

Evidence On Origins The buildings appeared to be part of a farming settlement that existed in the outskirts in the Ottoman empire. The main function was to have a grip on the agricultural region.

Statement of Significance The craftmanship of these structures indicate the continuous expansions over the years. Giving different Hierarchal meaning to the spaces as the age value increases. The buildings currently showcases the grasp the Ottomans had controlling the rural areas during their dynasty.

Courthouse: An earthquake caused the east and western parts of the courthouse to separate as the connecting cross vaults collapsed. Parts of the Interior similar to the Qaser are blocked by rubble and stones. A street now separates the two halves of the building. It is used as a social place where villagers socialize and is an attraction point to the community.

Stables: Appears to be built on multiple phases. Its levels and craftmanship relates it to the tower further south.

Indicating that the extruded arches were part of the mamluk citadel prior to the Ottoman buildings. Its recent concrete ceiling collapsed, but the valuable elements are still holding their integrity. Weddings are held in the plaza directly in front of the building.

Al-Qaser: Two cross vaults from the northwestern corner collapsed, in addition to the entire 2nd floor and the external stairway leading up to it. The hierarchy scheme assessment identified that the ground floor was used as a storage area for crops and cattle.

While the upper floor was a residential unit. Villagers use the space now as a stables for their horses and to store their tools. Ottoman sigils still exist on the keystones.

Mamluk Tower: Currently buried. Evidence by images from the Madaba plains project indicates a barrel vault buried with its ceiling traces clearly visible on the ground by a stone trail.

The valley will hold the memory of life, activating the senses of the user by multiple ways throughout different activities within an open green space . The complex will hold the memory of age, presenting information about the site within a trail of enclosed humble spaces.

Masterplan The Program was tailored to the demands and needs of the local community. To help establish interactions between different users and enhance the sense of Identity and belonging. The added functions needed to blend in with the complexity of the site and simplify it for users to digest the site one component at a time, creating the stories and chapters in which the user can choose and read different parts individually as he’s experiencing the site one story at a time.

Levels of Intervention: Inspired not Recreated

Chapter 1: Entry Statement The user enters the project in the same way it was entered when it was used by the Ottomans. Going to the stables; which is now the visitor’s center. A fortified entrance stops the user from entering through the courthouse (Chapter 4), and forces them left into an axis ending by Mamluk arches of the 12th century citadle; where they will find the visitor’s center and the gathering plaza.

Chapter 2 Entering the building the user is floating on a galvanised mesh. The continuity of the mamluk arches from the exterior to the interior provokes the user as they are unreachable by the mesh having an offset from them.

The occupational exhibition explains to the user about the various civilizations that occupied these lands, and hints the upcomming events of the journey.

Chapter 3; Mamluk Tower

Following the gravel pathway will lead the user to the tower, where ongoing excavations are taking place. A temporary ramp decends the user to a barrel vault.

The tower is dated back to the Mamluk period. The craftmanship of its stones relates it to the arches found within the stables. It appears that those 2 buildings were connected forming a citadle. ongoing excavations would help find evidence about the connection between the two buildings.

The peace and conflict exhibition tells the story of the fights that took place in the region. And about the political impact on these conflics.

Chapter 4; Courthouse

Reaching the courthouse the user realized that this is what blocked his entrance earlier. Traces can be seen on the ground of the modern interventions that occured in the village, such as the concrete additions and the street cutting through the building. The user enters the eastern part of the building and learns about the sugar industry and other goods that made hisban a hotspot in antiquity. Exiting back on the track the user passes the plain that blocked him earlier, and learns about the destruction that occured to the scarred building, the traces, and the modernity period of the village.

The western part of the building exhibits the trade routes connecting hisban to the silk road. And trades with India and Europe.

Chapter 5; Al-Qaser

Chapter 5 The structural integrity of the qaser was facing issues due to the lack of preservation of the building.

The rubble from the collapsed crossvaults and 2nd floor can be used to repoint the damaged fassades of the building. Additionally steel reinforcement was used at the expansion joint between the phases of the original construction, allowing for a light expansion with steel structure and prefabricated concrete boards and stun floors. The user then enters the Qasr. The mesh takes the user through a tour floating through. With the mood set by ambient lighting on the crossvaults.

The Ottoman exhibition explains to the user about the daily Ottoman lifestyle, culture, and their impact on Hisban.

-User would walk from space to space following the most dominant stop within their field of vision.

-Alternative routes were created to give users the audacity to choose their own story.

-Signage system included to help guide the users.

Chapter 6+7; Community Stables and Botanical Garden

Smart Phases The project can be implemented in phases, first the adaptive reuse components. This can help generate the funding required to build the expansion on the ridge and support the sustainable development of the community and heritage site.

Local community involvement is crucial for the success of the project. Therefore, the “present” narrative of the local community had to be maintained, especially that the site was neglected, and the locals reflected their own understanding on their use of spaces within the site. The program created merged between the visitors and the locals.

Sustainable Materials Materials selected for the heritage adaptive reuse zone were light and reversible. Allowing adaptation and the continuity of the excavation process. Steel structures were adapted in addition to light concrete board filling. The rubble leftovers from the collapsed structures were used to repoint some of the facades and to trace the citadel and courthouse volumes and planes. As for the expansion, materials were inspired from the valley and the context within the village. Pre-cast concrete roofs with steel structures allowed for a lower impact on the valley. And the use of stone obtained from the levelling of the parking to fabricate stone cladding for the expansion.

Site Section

Hikes Hiking trails allowed for the expansion of values and interactions beyond the action area of the project. The first hike is an expansion on the hydrological values. Taking the visitors on a chase of the water stream leading to Hisban’s Stream, Jordan River, draining into the Dead Sea. The second hike expanded on the agricultural values. Taking the users on a visit to local farmlands, with activities such as crop harvesting, thus increasing the interaction between visitors and the local hosts. Each hike with different difficulty levels are available to accommodate different users.
