Get Ready!

Le Tour is on It’s Way to Fyfield On Monday, July 7th, the worlds greatest cycle race passes through Fyfield on its way from Cambridge to the finish of stage 3 in London. Make no mistake, this is the Worlds 3rd largest sporting event and should provide Fyfield with one of it’s most memorable days. If you live in Fyfield you will not be able to miss it!

Don’t forget to put up the bunting and flags if you are on the route!

Schedule for the Day ● The B184, Birds Green and Moreton Road will be closed from 8am to 5pm although the ECC signs now say 7.30am (see inside)

● Accompanying vehicles will follow on with other vehicles following the rear clearing up and preparing the roads for re-opening by 5pm

● The Advertising Caravan will pass through from 12.15pm around 2 hours in front of the riders.

Having the first word….Having the first word…

Welcome to the Summer Fyfield Focus which covers July and August and what an active Summer the village has ahead of it Le Tour de France in July (only days to go), the WWI Commemoration Village Day and WWI Songs of Praise both in August. Considering it was only May we show cased our village and church with the Fyfield Festival and only last week the Queens Head held an Ascot Day event we really are very fortunate that not only do we live in such a delightful location we have so many events and activities for all of us to enjoy. The Clubs in our village have also been very busy competing successfully in various competitions and activities; see the Bowls Club, Cricket Club and Scouting news.

Dr. Walkers school has got involved with

the Village WWI Commemoration through a painting competition, the results of which are featured in this publication as are the winners of the Best Kept Front Garden competition.. The Village Hall continues to be a major hub in our village and their diary is bursting with events and activities and is attracting new regular hirers to the hall which are providing additional activities like Yoga.

On top of this we have the Fyfield Focus bringing all the news to every house in Fyfield and not only being a key communication across the village but is competing successfully with other Community Magazines. Please read my article about the Fyfield Focus and the sponsorship we need for some special editions of the Focus.

Things that you need to Know

Only one week to go now and no changes to the route or timings expected.

No traffic other than Tour de France vehiles and riders will be allowed on the closed roads. Traffic restrictions will apply so any offenders will have their vehicles removed.

Car Parking: There will be two car parks off the Willingale Road . One behind the Church and one between the River and Fyfield Hall. Vehicles will be charged £7 a day.

The Village Hall and Scouts car parks will be open also charging £7 a day with a charge of £10 a day for Motor Homes.

This restriction includes non tour de France cyclists.

Please keep your animals under control. Loose cats and dogs can cause havok and endanger their lives.

On Sunday July 6th, a Charity bike ride over the local part of the TdF route is being organised. Please note that there will be no road closures for this event but there will be plenty of cyclists on the road . This is part of the EFDC Chairman’s Charity year and is funded by sponsorship with no public money involved. The proceeds from the event will go to local charities including the Ongar & District Health Care League of Friends.

The event will start and finish at the North Weald Airfield in a large area on the east perimeter track which will include sufficient parking and refreshment facilities plus other attractions.

Fyfield Festival 2014 To all those who contributed to our Festival day, a very special thank you to you all.

The flowers in the Church were amazing, the flower arrangers excelled themselves.

I think the erection of the gazebos is one of the most difficult jobs, especially when there is a gale blowing and the rain is threatening, so thank you to Debbie and Steve, Jan and Les and family and Julie and anybody else holding on to the poles!

All the stall holders did very well under difficult conditions.

Thank you to John Jewiss for playing the organ, and it was especially nice to have Oliver playing this year.

Thanks to Lizzie for the car park field, which will be in a different location next year, and to Ron and Margaret for all the brilliant signs and posters that they placed around the village.

At the end of the day we raised ÂŁ2,411.00 towards the running costs of our Church St. Nicholas. Considering the weather I think we did very well.

The beefburgers and sausages went down a treat organized by Julie and her mum and dad. Carol Gabriel, Sally and Trish worked non stop in the Church and Helen Webb and Marion Allcock served ploughman's, so there was something for everybody.

Congratulations to all the children who took part in their concert. I watched from the kitchen and it was delightful. Thank you to Sally for your hard work. Sally had three hats on that day, helping in the kitchen, the concert and the bell ringers which were most entertaining and of course the printing of the programmes.

There has been a disturbing concentration of house burglaries in the Waltham Abbey area recently. Whereas we would normally expect these type of offences to be taking place during the hours of darkness, these ones are occurring between 10am and 4pm.

So, if you get a caller asking odd questions, don’t simply shut your front door and ignore them….CALL US and give the police a chance to check them out.

If the thieves don’t think they have aroused your suspicion they are likely to target another house locally and not move on.

Methods of getting in vary but normally involve gaining entry to the rear of the house before jemmying open a window or smashing a patio door.

We need your help to catch these criminals and stop them in their tracks.

With daytime burglaries, the intruders need to establish if anyone is at home before they break in. The last thing they want is for someone to be able to identify them.

Their normal method is to knock at the front door first of the house they have decided to target. If they get no answer they will continue on with the offence. If they do get an answer they will ask some lame question such as ‘Does John live

Fyfield Focus In the June Fyfield Focus we announced the Fyfield Focus had won a finalist award in the Rural Community Council of Essex (RCCE) Community Magazine Competition which is sponsored by Essex Life and supported by Chelmsford Diocese and Newport News. RCCE is a very influential body in the rural communities across Essex and is involved with the promotion and development of life in our villages.

Since winning the finalist award we have received feed-back from the Judges of the competition, Essex Life have done a 2 page feature of the competition with many photos of the finalists in the July publication and as you can see in this publication a number of messages of congratulations have been received.

To enable us to produce 3 special magazines per year with a colour front page (which would also include colour on the inside front, back and inside back pages) we need sponsorship of £150 per magazine. We have to submit 3 magazines to the competition so it makes sense to produce 3 special magazines with colour which would be September (which will reflect the Summer Events), December/January (Christmas publication) and March or April (Easter publication).

Fyfield Village Weekend to commemorate WWI 9th & !0th August Our preparations for the “Edwardian “ style fete on Saturday 9th August on the BridgeWilkinson Field and in the Village Hall are progressing well.

The event starts at 12.00p.m. and will be opened by two local celebrities.

For your refreshments there is a wide range of choice, BBQ, Ploughmen’s lunches and afternoon teas, coffee and cakes.

Many stalls have been booked, sports & activities for children and adults alike.

A Traditional Punch and Judy show, fire engine, vintage cars, ferrets, owls Plants, chocolate tombola, face painting etc.

Come along and have an enjoyable afternoon for the family. In the village hall there will be a display from EFDC museum, Art Trail by local artists.

We are looking for someone to organise a Tug-of-war a volunteer please.

Any young person who is resident in the parishes of Fyfield, Willingale or High Ongar may seek financial assistance from the Foundation. Assistance is also open to young people who currently attend Dr Walker’s School or have attended Dr Walker’s School for not less than two years and who, in the opinion of the Governors, are in need of financial assistance.

Assistance is available towards an education exhibition approved by the Governors, the cost of clothing, tools, instruments or books required to assist their entry into a profession, trade or calling, or otherwise promote their education. Fyfield Gardening Club Thanks go to Wendy Henshaw for our Gardening Club entry this month: The Gardening Club was invited by the ‘Allotmenteers’ to a BBQ/ picnic at the allotments for the June meeting. What a lovely surprise we all had. Neil had cleared the ten-foot tall brambles and erected gazebos and there was a heavily laden table of goodies to eat. Members added to this by bringing their own food as well. The non-allotment holders were amazed at the produce being grown on the allotments; it was all very impressive.

Fifteen members and their families enjoyed an al fresco evening; the wine flowed and cups of tea were produced from a whistling kettle.

The food and company very good. Thanks to Neil, Jacqui and family for their hospitality.

With the combination of warmth and rain most gardens are very lush and it is a job to keep up with lawn mowing and weeding. My delphiniums are taller than the six-foot fence, the best ever. Roses have all had their first flush, so keep dead heading for another crop. This applies to all flowering plants: dead head to get more blooms and prolong the season.

Due to the wet weather we have had, slugs and snails are busily chomping their way through our tender, newly-planted bedding. A tip I had from a nurseryman was to water non-edible (to humans that is) plants with Slug Clear. It has certainly worked with my hostas.

We will have held our annual fund-raising at the table top sale at the Budworth Hall,

selling plants on 28th June and we are intending to have a stall at the Village Day Fete on 9th August on the BridgeWilkinson Field at Fyfield with not only plants, but, hopefully, home-grown produce for sale.

The next meeting of the Gardening Club will be on Saturday, July 19. We will be visiting a garden in Upminster for a specially-arranged opening.

The following meeting will be on Tuesday, August 12.

Fyfield Village Hall News The Football World Cup, Wimbledon, Tour de France , Village Day and WW1 Commemoration that’s just the start of things.

In readiness for all the local summer activities the Village Hall has had a fresh coat of paint, the Gardening Club are adding a splash of colour to the tubs and baskets, there are plans for the refuse bin to be hidden away and a building sign is being designed and will be to be put up on the wall facing the car park.

Thank you to all of you that have come to our new venture of a monthly afternoon tea and we appreciate all the very kind comments.

The village hall toilet facilities will be available to all and sundry and the hall will be open for most of the day serving teas, coffees and soft drinks. I went to the first session of this new venture on 21st May, and was very impressed! Being something of a Tea fan, I decided to go for the whole experience, so cut out breakfast and lunch, and arrived at the Hall at 1.30pm feeling quite peckish! The hall looked welcoming with small tables laid with attractive cloths and napkins, fresh flowers in attractive jugs, and an eclectic array of very pretty china.

The Menus on each table were beautifully designed and offered Tea and Cake for only £2.00 (a real snip as the cakes are absolutely gorgeous) or the full Afternoon Tea for £5.00.

I decided to go the whole hog (if you will pardon the expression) and ordered full Afternoon Tea. A smiling waitress brought my selected brand of tea in a very pretty tea pot, followed by a beautiful slate

platter on which was spread a variety of dainty but well-filled finger sandwiches, petit fours, warm home-made scone with thick cream and jam, and a slice of my favourite coffee and walnut sponge; and there was plenty of extra hot water for the pot! Well, I was in tea heaven for best part of an hour, and enjoyed every scrumptious mouthful, as did my companions as they sampled the different cakes on offer.

I was away for the next Afternoon Tea on 18 June, but I will definitely not miss the one on 16th July! . Afternoon Tea at the Ritz in London may have the glamour of a famous London hotel, with bewigged and uniformed flunkeys hovering to pour tea for you from silver tea pots, and the food is excellent, but (and it is a big BUT) you do need pretty deep pockets as it will cost you £55 a head!

Tea at the Fitz – (alias Fyfield Village Hall) on the other hand, is yours for just £5.00! Tea-rrific! It is the foodie bargain of the year! Don’t take my word for it – come along on 16th July and try it for yourself, maybe bring a friend or two to enjoy it with you. There’s nothing like a nice chat over a cup of tea and something tasty whilst catching up on news and putting the world to rights. Take my tip, don’t have any lunch if you want to sample the whole thing!

FOOD BANK

PROBLEMS?

Food Bank is a really effective means of providing food to families and individuals in desperate need, who have nowhere else to turn. The charity works in conjunction with organisations such as Citizens Advice (see below). When the advice centre identifies a family or individual in desperate need, for whatever reason, they arrange for food sufficient for three days to be provided. This is intended to fill the gap until the recipient can be helped to support themselves.

The ability of Food Bank to continue to help people is entirely dependent upon the ongoing generosity of the people who donate supplies of food to it. If you would like to support this important charity, donations of non-perishable food with a reasonable shelf-life remaining may be left in the box just inside the door of the church, or in the temporary box in the porch. Thank you.

Fyfield and District W.I. Our speaker for the June meeting , Barbara Faulkener, came to talk to us about Ladies Day at Ascot and began by asking us how much we thought the prize money was, but nobody guessed the amount of £5m correctly!

Barbara went on to tell us that six races are run on each day of Ascot which begins on a Tuesday; Ladies Day always being held on the Thursday. This was so named by the media because very rich gentlemen attended on that day and were accompanied by ladies to be shown off for their money.

The third race on Ladies Day is always the Gold Cup (worth £350,000) which is given every year for the winner to keep and which is the most important race on the flat anywhere in the world. When the cup is made it must be held by someone wearing gloves but is always presented by the Queen (who always wears gloves) so this is not a problem. When the Queen’s horse won in 2013, Prince Andrew presented the cup (not sure whether he wore gloves though)!

In 1840 the race was renamed the Coronation Cup to celebrate the coronation of Queen Victoria. In 1901, following the death of Queen Victoria and because Edward (who loved racing) was in mourning, the race cards all had black edges and in 1910, following the death of King Edward VII, all attendees wore dark clothes.

During the First World War, Ascot ‘took a back seat’ but in 1919 it was re-introduced.

attended with the two Princesses but Ascot was becoming very shabby. Fortunately, the Duke of Norfolk injected £1m. In 2005 the races were held in York while £185m was spent on improving the enclosures and track which now has the best surface in the world.

Barbara’s talk was interspersed with mock ‘races’ in which members were divided into teams and invited to wear their ‘Ascot’ hats. Each team owned a horse and jockey. Lots of fun was had by all who attended and at the end of the afternoon the winning team were presented with their ‘Gold Cup’ by Barbara wearing white gloves!

May be Essex County Council Highways Department need to understand its importance. For the past number of months various publications have been issued stating that the road closures for the Tour de France route north of the A414 will be from 8.00am to 5.00pm. This week to everyone's total surprise, ECC put up road closed signs stating that the closures start at 6.00am. On being advised that this was wrong they changed the signs to read 7.30am! If you look at ECC’s own website it will tell you that the closure is from 8.00am to 5.00pm, the correct times as agreed by all parties months ago. So it seems that a section of ECC have decided to dictate their own timescale's for the most important and largest cycle race in the world despite an agreement with all parties having been put in place. The Focus will

probably be going to the printers before this issue is resolved but please be assured that the latest updates and hopefully, final resolution, will be published on line at: www.fyfieldfocus.org.uk If ECC do not for whatever reason change the signs I hope that they, at the very least, do not start any road closure actions until after 8.00am.

I suspect that many of you who need to get out of the village on the 7th have already made arrangements and would not be too pleased to have to bring them forward in time to cater for this total blunder by someone in the Essex County Council.

la colonne de Archie Hi Archie here! As I am an older dog now (two and three quarters) I thought that I might start getting out and about on my own for a change. My first visit was to the Queens Head where I made for the river bank hoping to catch some duck unawares. No such luck; someone called Boris caught me and took me to the pub where a nice lady called Sheila held me until my dad came and got me. I tried to buy a pint while we were waiting but she said I was too young! I'll try the Bulls Head next time, may be my friend Pip will serve me. My next visit was to the Village Hall afternoon teas where I had a great time until Julie phoned home for me to be collected. I wouldn't mind but I never even had a slice of cake.

Now us Jack Russells are easy going, gentle and calm and we hardly ever complain about anything unless our biscuits are at risk, but that Peacock is driving me mad. Mind you not as much as that Wood Pigeon with the girl friend called Tracy. You must have heard him singing "you're so cool, Tracy" over and over again.

The Tour de France is coming soon so that means I will be confined to the garden while the riders pass by. I hope this applies to cats and ducks as well!

Anyway, I'm off to look at a map to find out where France is and how it is the

Letter from Tony Boyce Following my recent remarks regarding communication and how we have the best communication technology the world has known yet it is still difficult communicating directly with people.

We are all aware that the Tour de France is coming through our area and yet there are many people saying 'they have not told us what is going on'!

First of all we have to find out who 'they' are!

Everyone is relying on the internet to keep us informed; the problem is most of us do not go to both the Essex County website and the Epping Forest website to find out what is going on. I appreciate most young people use this media continually but older folk do not. The press, who we used to rely on, are not interested in anything regarding local interest only sensationalism so we rely on our local magazines to keep us informed as to what is going on locally. We are of course fortunate that we receive the Forrester every 4 months which gives us an insight as to what is going on in Epping Forest District Council and this excellent Award winning Fyfield Focus.

So well done to everyone and keep sending in your articles and keep us informed in what is going on locally as I am sure we do not want to become 'they'.

Letter from the Chairman I would like to congratulate everyone who contributes to the Fyfield Focus winning a Finalist Award in the RCCE Essex Life Community Magazine Award for 2013. The RCCE competition is designed exclusively for magazines edited and put together by volunteers and this year attracted more than 40 entries.

The Focus is a very important part of life in Fyfield enabling the whole village community to communicate with each other.

We are very lucky in Fyfield to have so much happening and over the next few weeks we have two major events in Fyfield - the Tour de France and WW1 weekend event. Both of these events are covered in this issue.

The Parish Assembly on the 19th June was different this year in that the guest speaker was Peter Charman who represents Epping Forest District Council for Tour De France. He spoke about the planning, the schedule, what to expect on the day and answered questions from the floor. The Parish Council gave a brief report of the year and there were further reports from Dr Walkers School, WI, Local Police, Scouts, Village Hall, Fyfield Focus ,Bridge Club, Sports and Social Club. An Open Forum then followed.

At long last it seems we have all been successful in getting the pot holes in Ongar Road repaired and the verges cut in the village. Thank you all who badgered Essex County Council.

FYFIELD PARISH COUNCIL PARISH CLERK & RESPONSIBLE FINANCIAL OFFICER (RFO) Salary: NJC Scale LC1 Point 20/21 Pro rata for 32 hours per month (Dependent on experience and qualifications) Fyield is a rural village with a population of approximately 450 people near Ongar in Essex. The Parish Council consists of 7 members (no committees) with a precept of ÂŁ10,500 (2013/14). The responsibilities of this active Parish Council include recreation areas and administration of a burial ground.

The Council now seeks a suitable experienced person who is computer literate with excellent verbal and written communication, good administrative and organisational skills, an ability to prepare and manage budgets, and an understanding of local government, who can assist in the formation and review of Council policies.

The duties of the Clerk include provision of all administrative support to the Council including: attendance at evening meetings (approx.12 a year), preparation of agendas and minutes, correspondence; liaison with parishioners, District Council, County Council and other agencies; day to day financial management; preparation of end of year accounts to Audit level, and administration of the Burial Ground. The role will be predominantly home-based. A detailed job description is available.

The successful applicant will either hold the CiLCA or have the Certificate in Local Policy (University of Gloucestershire) or give an undertaking to complete this training. Further training will also be encouraged.

Cookery Section A couple of delicious recipes for you to try during the Summer weeks. A useful cake recipe to use when you have a glut of courgettes and a very refreshing Chicken and Mango main course recipe. I have tasted both and they are delicious and worth trying.

The kitchen of the Black Bull will be sending the focus some recipes to feature but Nicky has been very busy (as usual). Our local fishmonger in Ongar whose fish is top quality and is starting a new venture will also be sending some recipes and I hope to do a feature in the Cookery Section in September.

Chicken and Mango Platter (Serves 6)

Place chicken breasts in pan with stock, bring to boil, cover and simmer for 30 mins. Remove from heat and leave to cool.

Cut 3 breasts into slices and chop remainder.

Alternatively, lightly roast covered chicken, slice breasts, and cut up remainder.

Mix yoghurt, chutney and curry paste together. Place lettuce on a platter.

Slice half the mango and chop remainder. Peel and stone avocado, chop a third and slice remainder.

Mix chopped chicken, mango and avocado into half of yoghurt mix. Place on platter. Arrange chicken, mango and avocado slices on top. Drizzle over remaining yoghurt mix, serve garnished with an edible flower, such as a nasturtium, marigold, pansy, if desired.

Ingredients: 4 boneless chicken breasts (or 1 large chicken) 他 pint chicken stock 7oz (200ml)Greek style yoghurt 1 tsp curry paste Curly endive or other decorative lettuce 1 large mango, peeled and stoned 1 large avocado, peeled and stoned.

Courgette and Maple Syrup Loaf 3oz unsalted btter melted plus extra for tin 8oz plain flour 2tsp baking powder 2oz golden caster sugar plus a little extra for dusting 3 ½ oz sour cream 3 ½ oz maple syrup plus 1 tblsp to glaze 1 medium egg Finely grated zest of 1 lemon 3 oz sultanas 4 ½ oz coarsely grated courgette 1 tsp dark rum

Preheat the ove to gas mark 5 and butter 1.3 litre loaf tin.

Combine the flour, baking powder and sugr in a large bowl and stir to mix.

Whisk the sour cream, maple syrup egg and butter with the lemon zest in a medium size bowl, then stir in the sultanas and grated courgette (reserve a little to sprinkle over before baking if wished). Tip the wet ingredients over the dry ingredients and loosely combine: the mixture should look wet and lumpy. Pour into the prepared tin

and bake for 45-55 minutes until golden, crusty and risen.

Blend the 1 tblsp maple syrup with the dark rum and evenly drizzle over the top of the cooked loaf and leave to cool.

Wolf Hall RSC at the Aldwych Theatre June 11th.

With a vast array of characters this adaptation of Hilary Mantel's book is an incredible ensemble piece of theatre. You could hardly hear a pin drop - the totally engrossed audience absolutely focussed on the action being played out before them.

Fyfield Bridge Club July/August 2014 In July we are entering a charity fund raising Simultaneous Pairs competition in aid of Kidney Research. We shall make extra cake for the coffee break as members seem to need more nourishment after the first half of such tournaments – perhaps due to more focused concentration and excitement (or panic in some cases depending on the hands dealt!).

Also July is the start of the holiday season for a lot of members and last Summer was extremely quiet at the Club with very low table numbers. I do hope this Summer we don’t drop as low as last year – well not for the number of weeks that it did.

However, a quieter period gives me the opportunity to really get into the planning for next season and all the management, administration and communication that goes with it. I am already very involved with this as I have been giving the Club a lot of thought about its future and canvassing some of the members’ views on my ideas and getting their ideas also. I also reach out to the English Bridge Union (EBU) and the ECBA (the Essex Region of the EBU) for current views and guidance on some of my thoughts and plans and although I still have to work out the finite detail and get all the pieces of the jigsaw in place some of the new plans for the Club are:

Running an additional weekly Bridge Session on a Wednesday Afternoon (2 weeks of the month will be duplicate bridge and 2 weeks of the month will be supervised bridge sessions)

Continuing to run Bridge Courses on a Wednesday evening but introducing InHouse Run Courses. Starting in October we will be running an Improvers Course (using an external Tutor) and a Beginners Course (using Bridge Club resources). Both courses will run on a Wednesday evening.

·

Continuing with Bridge Workshops but holding these on a Saturday morning instead of a Monday evening and using both external and internal resources.

·

Investigate the demand and ability to run bridge weekends/short breaks.

Once the plans are in place and communicated to the Club the website will be updated to reflect the next season’s programme and I will keep the Focus updated.

Fyfield Cricket Club Fyfield hold fourth

It looked like the bowlers would have an easy time of it with a large total to defend, however, Stortford had other plans hitting 70 off the first 7 overs.

A rested team arrived at Bishop's Stortford keen to get back into it, although losing the toss and being put into bat was not the plan that the Saturday IX had in mind.

A few bowling changes and a couple of wickets kept Fyfield going but with 10 overs to go the home team required just 40 runs. A few quick wickets from Mary Shaw and on the spot bowling from Mark Shaw, 2 wickets for 8 runs, put Fyfield back in the game.

One wicket stood between Fyfield and victory whilst Stortford needed just 1 run to win, Mary Shaw took the last wicket finishing on 4 wickets for 35 runs.

The winning streak continued into the following week when Fyfield hosted Albury. Batting first again, Fyfield set the visitors a target of 170 on a slow wicket thanks to great batting performances from Danny Gould, 70, and Toby Wallden, 28.

Learning from the opening overs of the previous week, Fyfield came out to the field fighting from the start. Albury were bowled all out for just 46 in 24 overs with Mark Shaw making the biggest dent in their batting attack taking 4 wickets for 2 runs.

However despite two wins in a row, Fyfield struggled to get a team together for their match against third place South Loughton II's.

Loughton took advantage of Fyfield being two players down, finding the gaps in the field. Fyfield were faced with a target of 221 despite the bowling efforts of Mary Shaw, 4 wickets for 36 runs, and 2 wickets each from Dan Todd and Bruce Dixon.

Tired from a long afternoon in the field and facing a daunting total Fyfield fought hard with the bat but were ultimately bowled all out for 93. Simon Bonas top scored with 42.

The defeat at South Loughton hammered home the recurring problem of lack of players at Fyfield. Although there is a committed core at the club we are in desperate need of new members and players. The Sunday IX played just one game this month, at Home against Navestock, who batted first, reaching a total of 150.

Mitchell Tunnard took 3 wickets for 33 runs with Dan Todd and Danny Gould taking 2 each as well.

The colts are going strong still at Fyfiled.

The u13's have had one match so far with a few more lined up for July and the u10's have a tournament at the end of June.

There are roughly 30 children that attend training on a Monday night who are all shaping up to be good cricketers of the future.

There are currently 15 players in the u13's squad which is growing every week, some of them have even played a few senior Sunday matches. The future at Fyfield is looking bright, we just need a bit more support to keep the club going in the meantime.

6th September is our Club Charity day.

U13's t20 at 12pm followed by Fyfield v The Old Boys t20 at 3pm. Music and BBQ in the evening with the bar open. All the village is invited to come along and enjoy an action packed day with the club.

It took Fyfield 23 overs to hit the target losing just one wicket in the process.

Danny Gould had another great knock scoring 67 and Simon Bonas, 57 not out, and Connor Tunnard, 13 not out, saw in the win.

Fyfield Carpet Bowls Club organised for 5th August and everyone is looking forward to it.

On Saturday 14th June, four of our members – Mary Wilkinson, Dot Letchfield, Beryl Shuttleworth and myself (accompanied by Geoff Letchfield), travelled to Stisted Village Hall, to take part in the ‘Maurice Ponder Memorial Fours’ competition. We had four games to play and did quite well, even though the mats were ‘very tricky’! We won two games, drew one and lost one. Well done to the rest of ‘my’ team!

Since my last report in the Focus, which was in May I think, the evening bowlers have had a friendly match with Stock. This was away on Wednesday 11th June, and nine of our members travelled to Stock Village Hall.

The evening was most enjoyable and we had a great time. Our new members acquitted themselves well; so much so, we won the match six games to 2, with an outstanding shot score of 44 to 21. Noone was more shocked than me!! It seemed that, even though it was a relaxed atmosphere, our members concentrated on their game and performed well, with all of us feeling elated at the end of the evening, as we shared tea and biscuits with our hosts! As I have mentioned, the home match against Stock is in August, so I will report on this after it has happened.

1st Moreton & Fyfield Scout Group

This month we have a report from our Scout Leader Rolf Bassnett and from a scout Louie Fereday from Panther Patrol.

The Waltham Walk ‘The Tough One’2014 The Waltham Walk is organized & has been run by the Boys Brigade for over the past 40 years for youth organisations to compete in teams against each other. Teams come from the Boys & Girls Brigade from as far away as Northampton & Camberley, Air Cadets, Army Cadets, Schools, Colleges, & Scouts; with 4 different age category events run over a weekend in May each year. The 1st Morton & Fyfield Scout troop has competed for the last 10 years, winning the Mini Trek & Super Veterans (Leaders over 18 years of age) competitions, our teams often finishing in the top 3.

The starting point, over-night camp site & finishing points is all that is disclosed before the event starts.

Each team member who completes the whole weekend is presented with a certificate, with the route included in verse.

East Hanningfield was where you started, By planning your route for the walk.

First Woodham Ferrars then on to Howegreen, Where map skills were put to test.

At Danbury Camp you stopped for the night, Tent pitching and cooking for points.

Past Twitty Fee and Hoemill Lock, To the finish at Wickham Bishops.

We entered 2 Super Veteran teams who carried full kit of a tent each, sleeping bag, food & cookers, navigating 24 miles across the roads & tracks of Essex. Team 43 Rolf & Steve finished overall 2nd with 568 points & this despite Rolf making a map reading error which meant their team walked 28 miles. Team 44 Simon & Denise finished fast in 4th with 549 points. Both teams negotiated one incident that consisted of running over a ford, under a scramble net, running following a rope course through the trees & edging along the outside of a bridge above a stream & all in 2 minutes. through an obstacle course, being directed by your team mate was really funny & Steve excelled in this event.

birthday cakes, candles & all the trimmings followed by a rowdy verse of ‘happy birthday’; what the other tired campers thought was going on, one can only imagine. When all the teams arrived at Wickham Bishops village hall they were treated to burgers, hot dogs & drinks before the closing presentation & prize giving. In 2013 the troop came away

We entered 3 mini trek teams who carried a day sack of equipment & navigated 17 miles across the roads & tracks of Essex. Team 82 of Jack Mountney, Jack Gallagher, Louie Feredy & Ben Hayes were the fastest with a 2nd place silver trophy in the finishing youth team & arrived at mini trek & a 3rd place silver trophy rd Wickham Bishops village hall 3 out in the super veterans, in 2014 we of 38 finishing teams, after the swopped these for a 4th & a 2nd, a scores of the incidents & quiz pretty good result all round. The questions were added to the time leaders & parents are so proud of the they were placed overall 4th in their tenacity & team work the scouts category of 18 finishing teams & with displayed in completing this a score of 421 missed out by 2 points challenging event & hope to compete getting into the bronze medal again next year & you never know we position. Team 72 lead by Masie, with could win the competition. In scouting Caitlen & Brett had a great time we enjoy ourselves in everything we exploring the countryside & do & hope springs eternal. completing the incident challenges & finished on 355 points. Three teams from 1st Morton and Fyfield Scout group arrived at the village hall at East Hanningfield .At lunchtime teams of scouts, boy’s brigade, air cadets and leaders set off between 9:00am and 12:00 to begin a very long walk that would take them over a two day trip.

There were ten checkpoints on the walk; for all different capabilities.

All they had to locate these checkpoints with were a map, compass and a rough grid reference of each checkpoint.

The checkpoint that my team found the hardest was when we were blind folded and we had to do an assault course, as our partner had to tell us were to go. The easiest checkpoint was picking up water in a cup which was attached to a wooden pole and then passing it to the next person. When we had finished, we had found out that we had beaten the people who were running that checkpoint. At the end of the day we camped at the outdoor centre at Danbury.

That evening we put our tents up and cooked the food that we had in our 24 hour rations packs. I ate lamb casserole with a lemon sponge

dessert. We got an early night ready for walking the next day.The next day we were woken up at 5:00 in the morning and had to be out of the camp at 7:00 we were against time. After we ate the all day breakfast, we packed up by 6:56 and we were booked out straight away.

When we finished the walk, we handed in our point’s sheet to the check-in desk who counted everyone’s points. We had a BBQ to give us some energy.

At the end of the day we had a reward ceremony. Our team came fourth out of sixteen and we were first out of our troop. The people in my team were Ben Hayes, Jack Mountney and Jack Gallagher. We won a trophy that had been donated by 1st Morteon and Fyfield.

Would I do it again? .................................yes!

Looking forward to next year.

Beaver Colony and Cub Pack The Beavers have been on a really exciting sleepover camp with the cub pack. Twenty Beavers and Cubs spent the weekend at Belchamps Scout Activity Centre near Southend. They all had a fantastic activity filled weekend. They took part in Archery and wobbly pole climb, High Ropes and pedal Karts, Abseiling and crate stacking. They also had a treasure hunt, and they all went on a very muddy Assault course. They had a wide game on the Friday night and a camp fire on Saturday night. On Sunday they took part in Pole Jousting and Water Wallerz. They all went home very tired after all that activity but very happy.

A huge thank you to Alison Eckley the Beaver leader for organising this event and a huge thank you to all her team helping to make the weekend go so well.

Scout Troop Eight excited Scouts met at the Scout HQ at 7.15am on Sunday June 15th. They were all going on a trip to Cambridgeshire Gliding Club.

Hertfordshire Scouts have a glider at the centre and they run courses

for scouts to gain the aeronautics badge.

They all spent the day learning about air field safety rules, and the theory of flight. This is all part of the badge and it also included a flight in a glider over the Cambridgeshire countryside. During this flight they were able to take over the controls under the supervision of the instructor. They also made model gliders as part of the badge. They all had an amazing day and all received their badges.

ONGAR TREFOIL GUILD. Recently some members of the Trefoil Guild visited the Brownie Units in Fyfield and gave them friendship bracelets that we had made for the 100th Birthday of Brownies. We told them a little of how it was when we were Brownies although not quite a 100 years ago though I suspect some of them may have thought we were around then!

The Ongar Trefoil Guild will be helping at the BIG BROWNIE BIRTHDAY PARTY AT DUNMOW. Our particular job is to teach them knotting and tying up parcels something they used to learn in Brownies. Our ‘island’ is all about traditional Brownie tasks like

sewing on buttons, traditional skipping games, how to be healthy, learning the National Anthem and many other traditional tests. I understand there will be around 700 Brownies attending I will give you a report of all the other activities in the September edition.
