UK Context- Sheffield, Neepsend and Site J

Image 2- 3D model of Neepsend on SketchUp

Located in the midlands region go UK, Sheffield is an economically vibrant and active city in the heart of Southern Yorkshire. Our site is in a central district of Sheffield, known as Neepsend. This area is famous for its industrial workshops. In recent years, Neepsend has started creating a new mixed use identity for itself by introducing new leisure activities, housing a lot of independent and local retail stores and having a varied type of commercial and residential options.

Image 1 - Neepsend’s location within the wider context

The existing buildings on the site are currently extremely dense with an inactive frontage. With most of the windows blocked with wooden slats or blackened out, and row of cars parked on either side of the pedestrian pathways, anybody would feel unsafe and unwelcome. The flow of movement across Site J is also extremely limited and any space between buildings form shady narrow alleyways that are not lit up nor made to look safe. The pathways are also uneven thus hazardous for passerby’s.

Rutland Road Bridge Image 14-Listed Buildings in Neepsend Neepsend hasn’t gone through much physical urban grain change since the 1950’s. However, the high density buildings alongside the River Don have broken up into smaller less dense buildings. while making it less dense have increased chances of mobility through the site, several small alleyways have been created without proper urban interventions to make them safe and active. Other than this, the blocks (Block map) also seem rather small thereby posing as an opportunity to make this area more active and vibrant. This area also has a rich history with 7 listed buildings spread out across Neepsend. The Ball Street Bridge and the Kelham Weir are near Site J and will be highlighted in the proposed design scheme, taking full advantage of the Riverfront view that the site has.

NATSIEALYSIS

2

As seen in this map, the land use of Neepsend is quite mixed. The design proposal intends to keep this level of ‘mixeduse’- ness while also creating more urban interventions to increase the sociability in the area. As of now, the area follows a very unorganised mixed use pattern. with the current placement of services, 3/4th of Neepsend becomes empty and quiet after working hours on Weekdays and remain inactive during weekends too. Other than the Kelham Market every fortnight, most of the site remains quite empty.

The current design of the site isn’t too crowded. Each building also has only 2-3 floors with the highest building having only 4 floors. Since the roads in the site aren’t too wide, the shorter buildings don’t make the site feel claustrophobic or overwhelming.

Townscape Appraisal

These maps show which route is commonly used by the people. With the likeliness of people passing through Site J from the city centre being higher, a deduction of the type of users using this space can be made using housing data from the council and the type of services located in the city centre. With a more youthful population floating through Site J, the type of services that are located here can help attract more people. This is currently not done in this area. with car, cycle, bus and pedestrian routes passing by Site J this area has the potential to tap into a wide range of users and can retain these crowds with the allocation of the right services and the use of tactical urban design to sustain them here and encourage them to move around Neepsend.

The permeability of the built environment is very good, with connections to any area possible from nervy corner of Neepsend. However, the porosity of the buildings in Neepsend is very poor with only one entrance and exit for every building. The high density of certain buildings in the western part of Neepsend also make the area look ‘block like’. The vacancy of these buildings also aid in their frontages being inactive, thereby making those parts of Neepsend look very isolated and unsafe.

Negative spaces and Inactive frotages Street Enclosure Car parks around the site, Nodes around the site and Active Frontages Key Issues with the site and points that this proposal will tackleKey Issues1. Lack of Movement around the site 2. Inactive frontage ( Lack of windows + High density buildings) 3. Lack of Mixed use 4. Lack of lighting ( makes it unasafe) 5. Lack of green spaces 6. Does not take advantage of the view ( the River Don) 7. Unorganised parking- Interferes with the pedestrian pathways around the site Image 31- Car Parks, Nodes and active frontages around Neepsend Image 29- Porosity and Permeability around Site J Image 30- Proposed Urban Interventions in Neepsend according to the AAP Image 32- Street Enclosure on Ball Street

3. Good mix of leisure, commercial, industrial and residential services, aiding to the flow of a diverse population through the site.

Image 33- Strengths and Oppurtunities around Neepsend

2. Open spaces that can be landscaped into sociable garden spaces, making the neighbourhood safer.

Strengths-1.

2. No organisation in the placement of services Threats-1. Lack of good lighting and street furniture

Opportunities-1.Turn the abandoned areas with anything that makes Neepsend more vibrant.

2. Lack of green space thereby making the area look very cold and unwelcoming when inactive.

SWOT Analysis

2. Character listed buildings that equip the area with a rich history.

Image 34- Weaknesses and Threats around Neepsend

Weaknesses-1. lack of dedicated pedestrian and cycle routes

River don- A natural resource that also provides for a good view.

3 OONGDESIPRPSAL

- Have a mix of services on site to create an active frontage whilst also maintaining the privacy of the residences who live in the apartments on site.

- Placement of streetlights at 50 m intervals to make the area more accessible at night and increasing the safety of the site.

the Design Design Vision

2. Make area more vibrant and create a strong identifying for Neepsend-

- Smaller buildings with pathways that cut through the site to allow more permeability through the site. Make multiple entrances and exits for certain buildings (commercial and Leisure) to make them more porous.

Image 35- Precendence Collage of what proposal will look Image 37-Section of Density Massing 36- Materials used in

Image

1. Make area more accessible-

- Using steel and glass alongside the existing brick to create a modern facade and also allows transparency between the exterior and interior spaces. This makes pedestrians feel safer.

This is a viable design solution as it focuses on tackling the key issues that were highlighted with the existing site through the analysis. It encourages more people to use the site to its maximum potential. This design is also extremely flexible to change and can evolve with its residents’ needs over time. By creating an area that acts as an identifying marker for an en tire area such as Neepsend, while still aiding to its diverse population, this site proves to be a successful example of regeneration that will lead Neepsend into a new era of modernisation.
