ÂŤ Design or rehabilitate a public space in an urban area in Africa Âť

RULES The goal of this competition is to encourage, stimulate and reward the creativity and inventiveness of the African talents. Moreover, the competition aims to give students and young professionals the opportunity to discover and assess architectural and technical possibilities. We also seek to to create and spread a positive and dynamic image of the use of local African materials used in constuction, a well as to develop the use of renewable energy technologies.

1- HOW TO APPLY The competition is free of charge and open to students enrolled in schools or universities of architecture, urban planning and civil engineering (and related fields) for the 20152016 year, Africans or not. It is also open to young professionals, under 35 years. In all cases, the necessary proof (copy of student card, school certificate, diploma or any other evidence) must be provided when submitting the projects. Applicants may participate individually or in teams of up to four (04) persons. In the case of participation in a team, it will appoint a team leader. Participants who are not africans may also participate to the competition as long as the team leader is from Africa or from the African diaspora. The project could be done by students independently or find its place in a larger program, held in the academic program. Each team leader should register his or her team on the following website www.afrikarchi.com/concours.


After registering online, a number is given to each registered team. This number must be mentioned on all documents (boards and presentation text, CD, sealed envelope ...) as well as all mails. The names of the participants and the name of their school or company must not appear on the documents submitted to the jury, but only the number that has been given after registration. ! Only the team leader number should be mentionned on the documents !

2 - THEME Theme : “ Design or rehabilitate a public space in an urban area in Africa “. « Public space is in human societies, especially urban, passing and gathering spaces that are the use of all or which belongs to no one, which is in the public domain or exceptionally private. ». The subject is a shared dimension of space, which becomes suitable for various uses, in favor of a better quality of life in cities.

3 - SITE Each team will select in its own city, region or country the site where the project is going to be inserted. The site must be located in an urban area, in Africa. The choice of the site should be explained and justified through written notes and photos showing the proposed structures. It is required to produce a note (1 page A4 minimum) to justify the choice of study site.

4 - PROGRAMME Design or rehabiliate a public space in an urban area in Africa, as a structuring polarity of an african city in this XXI century. This is an opportunity to think of spaces that allow the development of neighborhood life, places of exchange, conviviality, social links. For this theme, it is also open to a variety of urban situations and scales suitable for a variety of interventions, taking into account the uses of space, flows, controlling environments, the report to the street and

to the surrounding frames, the presence of vegetation, the relationship to landscape. It is proposed to create or redesign a space that can range from a small square area, at the junction of several streets, the question of the relationship with the surrounding landscape of an African metropolis. The project should be designed using all the technical features, architectural, urban, which must have such equipment. The proposal must take into account environmental issues, sustainable development and public interest and the development of local materials. It will also address the issues of hygiene, safety and the treatment and management of roads and utilities. Development issues sustainable and renewable energies will also be considered. It will also integrate social issues such an area, including customs and practices of places depending on temporality. It is possible to incorporate some programmatic mix (play areas, friendly places ...). The structure of the design and coatings could be made ​​with any suitable material. However, special attention should be given to the use of local materials (clay or adobe bricks, stone, wood, natural fibers ... etc. . ) . The structural components of the project could be designed in a mixed proportion. It will then be up to each team to measure and justify the choice of its architectural and technical relevance.

5 - SUBMISSION For the jury, participants should hand over a CD or a zip file containing : • All the text documents and the 3D images used on the boards, in pdf format • Two (02) display boards format A0, portrait orientation (w=1189mm x h=841mm) in pdf format • The photocopy or scan of the student identity card, school certification or diploma, authenticated by the school, university or company. All documentation must be written either in French or in English. The CD should be sent in a bubble or well protected envelope in order to avoid shocks. PS: Participants are also allowed to hand over boards drawn with hands, carefully designed.

- Mail to the AFRIKArchi Headquarters (contacts page 8). - Hand over to the Representative of AFRIKArchi in your country of residence (contacts page 8). Whatever the delivery method you choose, make sure that we acknowledge receipt of your project.

Details of submission Board 1 - Project title - Location map on a significant scale (the choice is left to the participants), in order to assess the surrounding urban context and as a whole. - Mass Plan at a scale of 1/500 (or any appropriate scale) - Perspective drawing(s) of the structure and /or the surrounding spaces showing their quality in terms of structure and others. - Analytical sketches and diagrams, to assess the guiding principle of the project. - A written introduction (between 300 and 500 words) explaining the key issues in the overall architectural and planning of the project.

Board 2 - Ground plan at 1/100 (or any appropriate scale) showing the context. - (The) Plan(s) of upper floor(s) at a scale 1/100 (or any appropriate scale) showing the internal layout as well as the access. - Longitudinal and transversal cross sections at a scale of 1/100 (or any appropriate scale) - The main facade(s) at a scale of 1/100 (or any appropriate scale) showing the construction materials. - An axonometric drawing of the project with its close surroundings, connections, access to the immediate neighborhood at an appropriate scale to convey the guidelines of the project. - Detail of the construction method at a scale of 1/20 (or any appropriate scale) showing the important areas.

Reminder: The team number must be mentioned on each board (2 boards). It should not be mentioned any names or other distinctive sign on the boards​​.

Deadline for projects submission : 31 January 2016 An international exhibition of projects selected by the international jury will take place from March 2016 in several countries such as Algeria - Benin - Ethiopia - France - Ghana -Mali - Morocco - Rwanda - Senegal - Togo - Tunisia- USA... The three prizewinners projects and the other selected projects should submit: - A Powerpoint presentation and any documentation enhancing the project - A scale model (optional) - Any additional documents highlighting the project. An awards ceremony will be held in an African metropolis. The latter will be confirmed when the results will be announced, running February2016. It could also be plan the construction of all or part of the winning project after technical and financial deepening, and launching of a call for donations.

6 - PARAMETERS TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT TO EVALUATE THE PROJECTS The jury will take into account the following: - The compliance with the program, the objectives and the respect of adequacy to the needs - The extent to which the project fits in the existing town structure and planning - The relevance of the use of local construction materials and the way they are promoted - The feasibility of the project within realistic financial constraints - The originality and innovative nature of the proposal - A financially accountable approach - The quality of the boards, especially the lay out.

7 - JURY & PRIZES The proposals will be evaluated by an international and multidisciplinary jury presided by Rachid ANDALOUSSI, Moroccan Architect and President of Casamemoire. The jury is composed of a panel of architects, urban planners, engineers, sociologists, geographers... The full list of jury members is in the Press Release, available on our website.

At the end of the deliberation, 3 teams will be declared winners and some other projects will be selected for the international exhibition. Mentions may also be awarded to deserving projects. The result of the jury’s deliberation will be released in February 2016 on our website, facebook page, our blog and through our media partners. The prizewinners will be contacted directly by email and mobile calls. All the selected projects will be displayed on our communication media, and will be published as well. The winning teams will be invited to take part in the awards ceremony to be held in Africa during March 2016. For this, AFRIKArchi will bear the travel and accommodation of one member per prize winning team. The first exhibition of the prize winners and selected projects will take place at the award ceremony.

Prizes - 1st Prize : 2 000 € - 2nd Prize : 1 500 € - 3rd Prize : 1 000 € 5 Ipad each with the Archipad software will also be giving as prizes.

10 - PROJECTS COPYRIGHTS AND PUBLICATION RIGHTS The participants give to AFRIKArchi the entire intellectual rights of their projects. This includes the pictorial rights, the right to use and broadcast the project on any type of media. This is without any geographical limitation and for the duration of intellectual property rights. AFRIKArchi has the right of the first publication and the public presentation of these projects. Any publication made before the official publication, reserved for AFRIKArchi, will result in the outright cancellation of the team responsible.
