Connolly'spatriotism,morealtruistic thanthatoftheothersignatoriesof theIrishRepublic,maybeillustrated byacitationfromanarticlein"The Harp,"aSocialisticjournaleditedby him.Thepassageisvividlyillumina- tiveofthewayhethoughtandwrote.

"Sure,letusfreeIreland!Therackrentinglandlord,ishenotalsoan Irishman,andwhereforeshouldwe hatehim?Nay,letusnutspeakhastily ofourbrother;yea,evenwhenhe raisesourrent.'Thelandthatbredand boreus:andthelandlordwhomakes uspayforpermissiontoliveuponit. Letusalljointogetherandcr-r-ush thebrutalSaxon.And,saysthetownworker,afterwehavecrushedthe SaxonandfreedIreland,whatthen?

Oh,thenyoucangobacktoyour slum,sameasbefore.And,saysthe agriculturalworker,afterwehavefreed Ireland:whatthen?Oh,then,ifyou don'tpayyourrent,youwillbeevicted sameasnow;buttheevictingparty, underthecommandofthesheriff,will weargreenuniformandtheHarp withouttheCrown,andthewarrant turningyououtontheroadsidewill bestampedwiththearmsoftheIrish Republic.Now,myfriend,Ialsoam Irish,butI'mabitmorelogical.The capitalist.Isay,isaparasiteonindustry.Theworkingclassisthevictim ofthisparasite,thishumanleech,prey, inguponthevitalsofLabour.Therefore,Isay,letusorganiseasaclassto meetourmastersanddestroytheir mastership."

Ideas,perhaps.antinutideals:the spiritofacommercialisedagedeplored byCanonSheehan;but,behindthe dreamsofidealists,theyformedthe substratumofsolidfactsthatare alwaysgroundsforrevolution. Connollypossessedlittlepoetictemperament,indulgedinnoversification. Hisexperiencesintheindustrialcities ofAmerica.andhistwentyyears're- sidenceinGlasgow,hadtaughtthe samelesson--thefutilityofhomeRule oranyotherformofgovernmentby whichwasperpetuatedtheexploita- tion,atthehandsofafew,ofthat "greatmassoftheIrishworkingclass who heritanceremainastheincorruptibleinofthefightforfredoininIreland."Nationalfreedom,asheconceivedit.meantalousingofindustrial chains,thedifferentiationofjustice fromacommodity,distributivejustice, anddistributiveownership.AnenthusiasticGaelicLeaguer,hegavemuch studytotheprinciplesofLandTenure, asembodiedintheBrehonLaws;and longedforareturntotheclanshipnoworganicallyimpossible-thatpre- vailedinIrelanduntiltheFlightofthe Earls.

Tomany,Connolly'sparticipationin theIrishRebellionof1916wassufficienttoindicatethatthiswas-butthe culminationoftheclass-consciousness engenderedduringtheDublinstrikein 1913-aplausibletheory.Thecables. deliberatelymisleading,supportedand sedulouslypropagateditamongsta peopletoobusilyengagedinconstruct- ingasenseofnationalitybyarepudia- tionofallideas"madeinGermany," toofferseriouscriticism.EveninIre- land.andinDublinitself,asweare toldbyJamesStevensinhisbook, "TheinsurrectioninDublin,"written amidstthescenesofcarnage,thereal motivesoftherisingwereonlypartly understood."Ofthese"(theVolun- teers),hewrites,"theCitizenArmy,or Labourside,wouldnotnumbermore than1000men,anditiswithdifficulty- suchafigurecouldbearrivedat.Yet itisfreelyargued,andthetheorywill grow,thatthecausesofthislatestin- surrectionshouldbesoughtamongtheLabourproblemsofDublinratherthan inanypatrioticornationalsentiment, andthetheoryisbuttressedbyallthe agilefactswithwhichsuchatheory- wouldbefurnished.Itisaninteresting view,butinmyopinion,anerroneous one."

AFalseVersion.

Stevenswasright.Thetheorywas unsound,butitgrew;theprofessional patriotssawtothat.Itremained,however,forMr.ShaneLeslietopropound inthecolumnsofthe"DublinReview," October,1916,aversionwhich,forits envenomedscurrilityattheexpenseof Irishmenlaidtorestinquick-limed graves,orturningasheninprisoncells, isuniqueintheproductionsborninthe aftermathofthattragicweek.Writes thisAnglo-Irishman,withanaffectationofeasyfamiliaritywithIrish affairscharacteristicofhiskind:"This wasnotarebellioninthesenseofa nationaluprising.Itwasaprivateduel, andasheavy,unbrotherlyspectacularandstupidasanyduelorso-called affairofhonour."(Thisshouldprovenot"TheendofaChapter."butthe endofhisliterarylife.)

Theselegendswereshort-lived.and areeasilydisprovedbyMr.J.P.Jones inhismonumentalwork,"AHistoryof theSinnFeinMovementandtheIrish Rebellionof1916,"whichwillremain ashistorywhenShaneLeslie'sandthe otheraccountshavegonethewayof allthingsvenomousWelearnthatas

didtheNationalists.Thenecessaryassuranceswereevidentlyforthcoming, fortheentirebodyoftheIrishGeneral WorkersandTransportUnioncame overtotheVolunteers.Whenrebellion wasdefinitelydecidedon,Connollywas entrustedwiththecommandofthe forcesinthePostOfficeandin Stephen'sGreen. Thestoryoftheactualfightingis wellknown.Liketheotherrebelleaders,Connollyhadnotplayedatsoldiers,buthadstudiedmilitaryscience inhistravelsthroughtheBritishIsles, inAmerica,andontheContinent.The Irishfoughtwithconsummateskill,but attheendofaweek,cluetothefatal countermandingorderofEvinMcNeil, 1100men,isolated,weresurroundedby 60,000Britishsoldiers.Theprovinceshadremainedquiet,withtheexception ofinsignificantriots.Thewarship HelgahadsaileduptheLiffeyand rainedbombsonDublinuntilthecity blazed.Eventhen,withthegunsof theusurpersaroundthem,andtheir capitalcityinruins,Connollyandhis menwerestilldauntless,surrendering onlyinaccordancewithPearse'scommand.

Connolly'sexecutionwasthelastof agruesomelist;hisrelativeswererefusedhisbody,andnotevenpermitted toprovideacoffin.Dyinginfrightful agony,carriedoutonastretcher,and

wellastheCitizenArmytherewereat leastfiveothersocietiesassociated, throughtheirrepresentatives,withthe planningoftherising-theIrishRepub- licanBrotherhood(whoprovidedthe greatestnumberoffightingmen),SinnFein,GaelicLeague,theCumann-na- Ban(anIrishWomen'sCouncil),and theFianna-na.Eirinn(ortheIrishBov Scouts),organisedbytheCountess Markievicz.Itwillthusbeseenthat therevolutionwaspromotedbythe men,womenandevenchildrenofDublin. bravelyThewomen.indeed,foughtas astheirancestorsatLimerick. Foratimeaftertheformationofthe Volunteers,theCitizenArmyhadkept carefullyaloof.Doubtfulwhetherthe movementheldapromiseofgoodfor theworkers,Connollyattackeditwith thesamerefreshingimpartialityashe

proppeduptobeshot,atthewishof theCapuchinFatherattendinghim,he promisedtoprayforhisexecutioners. "Hewasasteadfastmaninallthathe undertook,"saysJamesStevens;"we maybesurethathekeptthatpromise. Hewouldprayforotherswhohadnot timetoprayforhimself,ashehad workedforothersalltheyearshe mighthaveworkedforhimself." Martyrdomwasnotnecessaryto rescuehisnamefromthesombreim- mortalityofthebookshelf.Divinelydiscontented,touseatermofPrior McNabb's,inanotherconnection,with theappallingeconomicconditionsin Ireland,hehadthrownhimselfenthu- siasticallyintotheLabourmovement.InGlasgow,wherehehadremoved,his cultureandabilitygainedforhimthe positionoforganiserfortheSocialDe-

mocraticFederationinthat,city.In thiscapacity,hetouredScotland.and, later,thenorthofEngland.After spendingover20yearsabroad,hereturnedtoDublin.DuringtheGeneral Strike,hi1913,hewasJamesLarkin's lieutenant.Nocapitalist'sarmourof hypocrisywasproofagainstConnolly's shaftsofinvectiveandpolishedphrases sharpassword-thrusts.Knowingwell thetraditionalandwell-foundedhatred ofIrishCatholicstoanythingsavouring ofproselytism,heopposedtheproposalsoftheGovernmentthatthe strikers'childrenshouldbetakento England.Theprojectwasdefeated.and only.15children.itissaid,leftIreland. AfterLarkin'sarrest,Connollyassumed leadershipoftheIrishGeneralWorkers andTransportUnion.whichheretaineduntilhisdeath.

Connolly'swasafacileandprolific pen."LabourinIrishHistory."asthe firstattemptofanIrishmantomaintain,openly,thatSocialism,farfrom beingrepugnanttothespiritofnationality,wasanintegralpartofit,is avaluablecontributiontoIrishliterature.Stressislaidonafact,toooften forgotten,thateveryinternationaldisputehas,to,averygreatextent,aneconomicbasis.Theauthorhasleant heavilyonMrs.J.R.Green's'Ireland's Unmaking"forhisknowledgeofthe lawsrelatingtothecrushingofIrish industries,andthedestructionofthe mercantilefleet.O'Connellcomesinfor scathingcriticismforhisinitiationof thepolicyof"constitutionalaction," slavishlyimitatedbyhisfollowersdown tothepresentday."forhislackof sympathywithworking-classaNsira.-ess--- tions,andhisopposition,in-the'Commons,toalleviatemeasures.Thevitriol ofhiswrathispouredoutagainstSmith,O'BrienandDuffy.whopreach- edwar,andwhenitcame,wereunable orindisposedtoaccepttheresponsibilityofleadership.

Connollyneverlostthefaith.This adherencetoitbroughthim,.whenin America,intosharpconflictwiththe materialist,MauriceLeLeon,andthe partyledbyhim.Throughthevicissi- tudesofabusylifehepreserved,too, hisracialidentity,andlongedforthe realisationofhisboyhood'sdreams:an IrishIreland,notinleadingstringsor inswaddlingclothes,buterect,self-respectingandreliant.Overthe clamourofopposingpoliticalparties, theclashofphilosophiesandchanging policies,thevoiceofKathleenna Houlihansoundedclearly,as,withher eyeseverfixedonthelonestarof

Itwasdecidedtodonatethesumof ElIstothefundfortheentertainment oftheschoolchildrenfnconnection withSt.Patrick'sDaycelebrations.

Mr.Tullyreportedthatthesociety haddrawnaprominentpositioninthe St.Patrick'sDayprocession.Severalof thesociety'smembersarecompetingin thevariouseventswhicharetobeheld ontheShowgrounds,Claremont.A teamfortherelayracewillalsodon thecoloursofthesociety.

Owingtothelargeamountofwork entailedinconnectionwiththeinstallationofthelibrary,ithasbeen-found necessaryto,pr.)tern,appointan assistantlibrarian.Mr.A.Brennanhas beenappointedtotheposition.

Tothiswell-balancedunionwasdue hispower.Therearemenwhoseconscineceisbeyondsuspicion,andyet who,forwantofmentalbalance.fail inmoralwisdom,andwhodonotrise tothehigherorderofvirtues.Thevery sourceoftheirexcellenceisthesource oftheirweakness,andsotheybecome obstinate,bigoted,andfanatical. Labouringunderamistakensenseof obligation,filledwithanoverbearing zeal,theyirritatewhentheymeanto improve.andwiththebestintentions aremastmischievousintheiractions.

Ainanofweakunderstandingmaybe agoodman,buthisgoodnessshould bewithinthesphereofhiscapacity.To beagreatmanaswellasagoodman theremustbeastrongunderstanding, andthisJohnRedmondhad.This, indeedwashismostprominentmental faculty.Giftedwithfineimagination, profoundfeeling,andararesenseof beauty,hewasbehindnomaninhis dayinintellectualvigour.Moreover, thisstrengthofmoralandintellectual characterwassoblendedwithhuman sympathyandmodifiedbyChristian gracesthatheseemedtheveryessence ofgentlenessandthefulfilmentofthe lawofcharity.JohnRedmondis mournedbyinnumerablesincere friends;heleftnotasingleenemy.The warriorisatrest.Werestorehimto thebosomofhisbelovedErinwithour blessingsandprayers.Weblesshim forhisnoblelife,asafaithfulsonof St.PatrickandatrueIrishpatriot, andwepraythatGodmayquickly placehimwiththesaintsandscholars ofhisnativelandintheeternalland ofHisheavenlyreward. To-dayisadayfortheCatholic ChurchandforIreland,andincidentallyforthelandtowhichwealloweour sincereallegiance-Australia.AsIrishmen,andasAustralianCatholics,we rejoiceto-day.Thebattalionsofprejudiceandreligiousrancourhavebeen raisedagainstus.Duringthepastyear ofpoliticaltwistingandturning,the weakandbeggarlyelementsofsectarianismhavebeenusedtothelastounce toblackguardtheCatholicportionof thecommunity.EvenCatholics,who runwiththehareandfollowwiththe hounds,havenotbeenlackingin workingforthepropagandaagainst themselves.Onlyafewdaysagoa narrow,ignorant,andprejudiced,and smallandfeeblesectionofthecommunitycriedoutagainsttheCatholic schools.Theirvoiceisasineffectiveas thecryofakookaburra,butitshows thetendencyofthesectariancrew againsttheCatholicChurch.Nobody inthisState,norinanyotherState, canconsiderCatholicsaggressive,but wecanalwaysputupasoliddefence. Wewanttoliveandletlive,butifthe stingingwaspsofprejudice,wholive inanatmosphereofpruderyandpretencemolestus,theywillalwayslearn totheircostthatthestingisnoprofitableweapon.

HisGracetheArchbishopofPerth neveroffends.Norcananybodytake theArchbishopofMelbournetotask foroffence.Letthebitterestbigotexaminehisspeechesinafaircritical spirit,andhewillhavetoadmitthat theyarefreefromabuse,from hypocrisy,andprevarication.Theoffensiveelementis,asarule,suppliedby theuneducatedandunpolishedparson. However,wethinkhisintensepopularityislargelyduetohisCeltictemperament.ItishisIrishkindliness whichhaswonhimsuchawidecircle offriends.InanIrishheartthereis enshrinedanimpulseofgenerosity. andnoheartcouldbethecentreof sentimentsmoregenerousandmore noblethantheheartofthemetropolitanoftheGoldenWest.Thoughof longresidencebeneaththeSouthern Cross,andthoughatrueAustralian citizen,HisGracehasthewarmest cornerinhisbigwarmheartforthe oldgreenlandwheretheashesof thosewhogavehimlifeawaitagloriousresurrection.Forwhereisthetrue Celt,whoseeyesarenotfilmedwith tears,whoseheartdoesnotbeata t-vthmofaffectionwhenhethinksof theIsleinthefar-offnorthernseas, which,nexttoGod,hasastrongclaim onhisdevotion?

Thisstrikingarticle,"asimplenarrativeofrecenteventsinIreland,"should bereadbyeveryAustralianwhowantstogetagripoftheIrishsituation.It isadamningindictmentofSirEdwardCarsonandtheUnionistcliquewhich hasbeenrunningtheEnglishGovernment,andhasbeenresponsibleforthe extraordinaryobstaclesthathavebeenputinthewayoftheConvention.

OnTuesday,November25th,1receivedacommunicationfromIreland intimatingthatagravecrisishad arisen.Thenewsastonishedme.Only threeweeksbeforeIhadleftIreland reasonablyquietbutforthecurious andintermittentprovocationpolicy,as itisknowninDublin,fortherewas goodnewsoftheprogressoftheConvention,andeventhehistrionicdisplayofmachinegunsandpolicesnipers inthetreesatMitchelstowncouldnot affecttheimpression1hadgathered ofamoreorderedcondition,allthe moreasIknewSinnFeinwasbenton constitutionalisingitself,sotospeak, andenforcingdisciplinedorder.What, then,wasthisnewcrisis? NaturallyIturnedtothepress,but IcouldfindnothingaboutIreland. Thenewspaperswereablanksofaras Irelandwasconcerned,andhadpracticallybeenablankforsomelittle time.OnthatTuesdayThomasAche diedfromtheeffectsofforciblefeeding. LondoninProfoundIgnoranceofIrish Affairs. Imadeinqpiriesinauthoritative circles,butnumanknewanythingex ceptthatthesituationinIrelandwas supposedtobe"ticklish,"andthenI foundthateditorswerenotdisposed totalkaboutIrishaffairs;inshort, Londononthedayfollowingthedeath ofAshewasinprofoundignorancenot onlyoftheeventswhichledtothat tragedy,butoftheconsequenceswhich wereboundtoresultfromit. OnSeptember25th,AchediedinDublin,andprobablynotahundredEnglishmeninBritainknewatthetime thathewasbeingforciblyfedorwhy hehadresortedtoahungerstrike,or evenwhohewas,andforquitethree daysafterhisdeath,duringwhich periodallIrelandwasinaferment,we inLondonhadnottheremotestidea ofwhathadhappenedunderCastle governmentorwhatwascertainto happenifforciblefeedingwascontinued.

Itistrueenoughthattheelections resultedinacurioussituation..The countrywestofQuebecwentsolidly oneway.Quebecwentjustassolidly theother.EastofQuebectherewasa division,andifthebalanceintheMaritimeProvincesinclinedtowardthe Quebecsideitistbberemembered thattheyhavealargeFrenchpopulation,ofthesameoriginasthatof Quebec,whichmadeitsvotingpower felt.Willitsurpriseanyonefamiliar withthewaysofpoliticstolearnthat, whereasbeforetheelectionthewelkin rangwithdenunciationofQuebec,the dayaftertheelectionthevictorsbegan toinquireinwhatmannerQuebec couldbeconciliated?Thatiswhathas happened.True,concernisshownby thoseonlywhohaveaseriousregard forthefuture,whotakethelongview. Trueagain,evenamongstthesethere aresomewhoadvocatethemethods ofthestronghand.Nevertheless,the questionwhoistoruleCanadaforthe immediatefuturehavingbeensettled, thosetowhomthetaskisdeliveredare verynaturallyseekingtomaketheir roadaseasyastheycan.

BeforetheelectionthelanguageheldtowardQuebecwasofthissort:"Close yourranks.EnglishCanadians!Quebec declaresthatthatProvinceshallhold thebalanceofpowerandswingthe destiniesofthisBritishDominionto suititsownparochialvisionandits ownecstaticwhims.Closeyourranks! IfQuebecwantstoplaythedangerous gameofOneProvinceOverEight,it willfindthatmenofBritishbloodare nottobetroddenunderfoot."Itisinterestingtonotethereaction.Wesee it,ofcourse,inthereturnofsixty-two Oppositionistsoutofsixty-fivemembers,buteventhatdoesnottellthe tale.IntheQuebeccountrydistricts peoplelovepartypolitics,thepolitical orationintheopenairafterMassbeing asmuchapartofthenormallifeas theMassitself.Theytakesides,these serious, standGod-fearingfarmers,andthey fast.Electionafterelection,unto thethirdandfourthgeneration,a parishmayvoteTougeoritmayvote bleu,butwhicheverwaythemajority liesthere-isalwaysastalwartgroup ontheotherside.Thistime,inoneof theoldestcountiesandoneofthemost famouspoliticalbattlefieldsinall Quebec,thereturnsran165to0;138 to0;134to0;410to1;379to2;and soon,theaggregatesbeing2643to36. Inanothercounty,thereturnsran485 to0;340to0;416to3;940to10;inall 5218to77.Onemightsuspectthatthe 36andthe77werestrangersinthe counties,orattheleastoutsidersto thepopulation.Thosewhowantedto isolateQuebeccertainlyhadtheirway asfarasQuebec'sownresponsewent. Itwasperfectlywillingtobeisolated fromthosewhoproclaimedthemselves itsenemiesandwhosaiditmustbe isolated.

Twodaysaftertheelectionnewspapersfriendlytothe'Government, nowsafeagain,begantotakeanew lineaboutQuebec.Theisolationpolicyhadworkedtoowell.Thesituation, onepapersaid,mighteasilybecome embarrassing.Hereweresixty-fiveto seventymembers,countingthose electedbyFrelichvotesoutside Quebec,whobyquietlywatchingtheir chance,couldupsetministriesaseasily asitwasdonefromtimetotimein France.Thissitua,tionwasallwrong, andmustbechangedassoonaspossible.Thisexpressionwasfromthe ConservativesideoftheUnionGovernmentsupport.FromtheLiberalside camethesageobservationthatthere wasnousetryingtosettlethemain issuebetweenQuebecandtherestof theDominionbyspeecheswhichignore thevotingpowerof2,000,000people.A. permanentseparationbeingunthinkable,anattempttoreachanunderstandingbecamenecessary.Andso. whileyesterdaythepartofFrench CanadianswastodowhatEnglish Canadianstoldthem,nowthemajority areconjuredtoshowbothsympathy andgoodsense.YesterdaytheaggressivepurposewastoconscriptQuebec. thedesireistoreachanagreement.onthequiteotherissue,whether

Canadais bi-lingualcountryor whetherCanadaisacountrywithone bi-lingualProvince,namelyQuebec. \Vhatisonetothinkofallthisr. \Vhatitmeansisthattherearesome permanentproblemsconfrontingCanadianstatesmen,andthatwhileitis convenientenoughinsomecasesto isolateQuebec,inothersthatisthe lastthingtobedesired. FrenchCanadaisCatholic,andthere areelementsintheCanadianpopulationwhichareaggressivelyanti-Catholic.Theirpreferenceistobeagainst Quebec;butithashappenedinpast timesthattheirinteresthasrequired thatQuebecbewiththem,andinsuch instancestheyknowhowtobeneighbourly.Peoplewhoseancestorsnever spokeanythingbutFrenchcherishthe desiretohavetheirchildrentaught French.InQuebecEnglish-speaking people'thinkthisnaturalenough,for they,whoseancestorsspokeonlyEnglish,wanttheirchildrentaughtEnglish,andthoughtheyareinavery smallminority,theirwishishonoured. ButintheotherProvinces,when Frenchfamiliesgothere,itisfound thatthisreciprocalprincipleonlyappliestoQuebec.Fortheirgoodthey mustbecontentwithEnglish,but theyarenotcontent.

Inthethirdplace,thereisadifferenceinoutlookuponthegroupof issuesbroughttotheforebythepoliticsofBritishImperialreorganisation. TheFrenchCanadianhasbeen300 yearsbutofEurope,andhasnodesire tobedrawnbackintoEuropeancurrents.Hisdislikeisturnedintoobstinacywhenthosewhoarefordragging himunwillinglyintoImperialist schemesvarytheproceedingbyabusinghimasacriminalforspeakinghis ownlanguage. Finally,therearedomesticquestions, someofthemcloselyrelated,however, totheImperialistgroup,astowhich othersectionsofthecommunitymay divideaccordingtomanifestinterest, andastowhichQuebec,withitssplendidadmixtureofagriculture,industry, andcommerce,isnotboundtooneside ortheother.ThereisaFree-Trade partyintheWestandaProtectionist partyintheEast;thereisaProAmericanparty(intradematters)in theWest,andanAnti-Americanparty intheEast;thereisaGovernment Ownershipparty,and it;therearetheadvocatesofnumerous economicandotherpanaceas,andthere arethenatural,becauseinterested,opponentsofeachofthem.Inthenew Governmenttheopposinggroupson anyandallofthesesubjectsareall represented,andinParliamenttheir supportersarealmostequallydivided. OnlyQuebecisoutside,withablockof votesbigenoughtobedeterminative ifpresentfriendsbecameenemies,big enough,again,tokeepeithersidefrom pressingits-viewstoofarforfear Quebecmightfavourtheother:That iswhyanewspaperononesideof politicspleadsthatQuebec'sisolation hasgonealtogethertoofar:whya newspaperontheothersideispin-ring inthemostfriendlyway;andwhythe usualtemptationsarealreadybeing putinthewayofpublicmenwho,a monthago,weredenouncedaspublic enemies. Afterthagyaurtlhartialhewassentas a"'pNflei7r-toI3roadmoorduringthe "King'spleasure,"andcontinuedto drawarmypayuntilthefollowing November,when,aftertheRoyalCommission'sreportonthePortobello atrocities,hewasretiredon"halfpay.''

The"Spectator,"obviouslyinspired officially,putforwardlastJulythedemandforCaptainColthurst'srelease,as heisnowdeclaredtobe"quitesane andnormal."Variousarmyofficers. Itseemsthatthereneverwasawar forGreatBritainforgenerations (whetherfordemocracyorsomething else),inwhichaBowenZolthurstdid notserve.ThedeedsoftheColthursts inthePeninsularWar,atWaterloo,at theIndianMutiny,intheBoerWar, andinthepresentwararecited.Itis notmentionedthataLieutenantColthurstcametoIrelandonRaleigh's punitiveexpedition,orthatCromwell grantedthefamilylandsandcastles nearBlarneyasarewardforservices. CaptainColthurstisdescribedas''a trulygallantandhard-workingsoldier. patientlyservinghiscountry.avictim ofpuremisfortune."Anappealismade onhisbehalf"forthesakeofhumanity,"andthe"Spectator"feelsthatif theappealforreleaseisinvaina "stainwillrestontheGovernment whichtheBritishpubicwilllookupon withsorrowandwithshame."ArequestismadethattheHomeSecretary be"lannbardedwithpetitions"toshow the"indignation"feltatthecontinued detentionofCaptainColthurst,andit isevensuggestedthat"sterner methods"oughttobeadopted,ifconstitutionalonesdonotsucceed.

TheevidenceastotheaboveatrocitieswascarefullyomittedatthemilitarycourtmartialheldinJuneonColthurst.Itwasonlyagainstthestrongest protestfromthemilitarythatSirJohn SimoninsistedonthiscasebeinginvestigatedbytheCommission.Wehave evidenceofatleasttwoothermurders byColthurstlaterintheweek,butthis wasruledoutattheCommissionas "notwithintheirscope."

Myhusbandwasthentakenasfar asthebridgeandleftbyColthurstin chargeofLieutenantLeslieWilson. Colthurstsaidaprayeroverhim("0. LordGod,ifitshallpleaseTheeto takethisman'slife,forgivehim,for Christ'ssake"),andleftinstructions thatifhispartywassnipedatduring theirexpeditionthatSkeffingtonwas tobeshotforthwith.LeslieWilsontestifiedthathesaw'nothingstrange"in theorder.andwouldhavecarriedit out,anditwasinfactacommonpracticewiththesepartiesengagedinsuppressinglibertyinIrelandtotakesuch "hostages."

CaptainColthurstthenbombedAldermanJamesKelly'spremises(they mistookhimforhisnamesake.Alder. manTomKelly,aSinnFeiner).Theysackedthepremisesandtookprisoners theshopmenandtwoeditors,Dickson andMcIntyre,whohadtakenrefuge there.Theyflunglivebombsintothe housewithoutwarning,andwounded oneofthemen.Ihaveseenthehouse; itbearsthemarksofthebulletsand bombsyet.Astherewasnoresistance fromtheunhappypeople,myhusband wasescortedbackalivetotheBarrackswiththetwoothereditors.Dicksonwasacripple.CaptainColthurst spent,accordingtohimself,therestof thenightinprayer.Atthreeo'clockhe foundaBibletextwhichseemedto himaninspiration-fromSt.Luker: "ThosewhowillnotacknowledgeMC, goyeforthandslaythem."HeinterpretedMetomeantheBritishEmpire, themessageasadivinecommand. TheMurder.

Shortlybefore10o'clockthenext morning(April26th,.Colthurstagain demandedmyhusbandfromtheguard.

Itseems,accordingtotheaccount, thatmyhusbandwastakenoutfrom hislockedcellbyColthurst.Ashe walkedacrosstheyard(theyardwas only12feetlongby6feetwide),hewas shotinthebackwithoutanywarning whateverbythefiringsquad.Whilehe lay,thetwoothereditorsweremarched autalso,andmurderedincoldblood withoutwarning.Theotherprisoners :istenedeagerlythewhile,andasthey heardvolleyaftervolleyringout,said: -Anotherpoorfellowgone,"and thoughttheirownturnwouldbenext. Then(afterthesecondvolley)they heardDoblynsay,aboutmyhusband, toSergeantAldridge."Thatmanisnot dead."Myhusbandmovedashelay ontheground.Doblynthenreported thisfacttoColthurst,whogaveorders "tofinishhimoff."Anotherfiringsquad wasthenlinedup,andmyhusband's bodywasriddledashelayonthe ground.Afterthattheotherprisoners heardwashingandsweepinggoingon forabouttwohours,andwhenthey wereallowedintotheyarditstillbore themarksofthemurder.Thewallwas blood-stainedandriddledwithbullets. TheBritishwet%carefultoprevent myseeingthebodyorhavingitmedicallyexamined,andlater,whenIattemptedtohaveaninquestheld,permissionwasrefused.At11MajorRosboroughagaincommunicatedwiththe garrisonadjutantatheadquartersand withDublinCastle.Hewastoldto burythebodies.CaptainColthurstsent inhisreport(asorderedbyRosborough),buthewaskeptincommand, andn'reprimandmadetohim. Ithasbeennoticedmanytimesby thosewhostudyFrancefromwithin thattheyoungergenerationofhersoldiers,ladsbetweennineteenand twenty-fiveyearsofage,facetheordealofthewarinaspiritthatrecalls thecrusadersofmedievaltimes,rather thanthegenerationthatimmediately precededtheoneofto-day.Thiscomes fromthereligiousandsocialevolution that,evenbeforethewar,wasclearly perceptibleamongtheseboys, M HenryBordeaux.inhislastbook,"La JeunesseNouvelle,"noticesandillustratesthismentalattitudeofmany youngsoldiers,whoseardentandsolid religiousfaithseemedtocarrythemto theaustereheightsofrenunciation.Of course,healludestoanelite;it-would beabsurdtopretendthatallouryoung soldiersarelikethosewhosestoryhe tellsus,butwemaysafelyassertthat theseboy-heroesarenotexceptions andthatthecharacteristicsweadmire inthemarecommintomanyoftheir comrades.Thesecharacteristicsareabsoluteself-sacrifice,akeensenseof responsibility,anenlightenedandpracticalreligiousfaith,thatexpresses itselfbyactsratherthanbywords.

ThefirstoftheyoungfriendsofM. Inanotherletter,herelatesthathis corporal,aBretonreserviste,being mortallywounded.sentforhim."In hiseyes.Iwasthechief,atoncepriest andfather,-writesthelieutenant,who ownsthatheshedtearsoverhisfaithfulBretonsoldier.

Fromtheeasternfrontier,ourlieutenantwassentnorth;nearLongwy, hecommandedacharge,butonlytnree menfollowedhim,therestbeingheld backbytheenemy'sterrificfire.Our youngofficerstoodupandcalledout: "Lookatyourofficers;dothebullets hurtthem?Theymakeahole,butdo 'nothurt;upnowandcomeon."He ownsthathelaughedashemadethe speech,themenlaughedbackandgot uptofollowhim. Thereisapatheticcontrastbetween theboyishspiritofthisveryyoung soldier,whowenttobattle,likeallthe St.Cyriens,astoafeast,andhisdeath. Inspiteofhisyearshewaslookedup toandobeyedbyhismen,whowere proudofhisbrilliantcourage.Their lastvisionofhimwasnearYpres; severelywounded,deadlypale,holding hisrevolver,hewasfacing.agroupof Germans.Manymonthsofsuspense followed,then,oneday,ReneDecheys' parentswereinformedthroughdiplomaticchannels,thathisdeathwascertain. Threeyearsolderthanthisboy,was M.Bordeaux'sthirdhero,Ferdinand Belmont,who,whenthewarbroke out,wasamedicalstudentatLyons, hisnativecity.Hebelongedtoanexcellentfamily,andhadbeencarefully trained.Twoofhisbrothers,Jeanand Joseph,thelatterofwhomwasa seminarist,werekilledin1914and 1915.Ferdinand,whoattheageof twenty-threewasalreadyacaptain, receivedtheLegionofHonourforhis distinguishedservice.Thethreewere castinthesamemouldasregardsthe moreimportantthingsoflife,though theirtemperamentsdiffered.Jean,a passionatemountaineer,wasabright boy,who,whenhebadehismother .rood, saidtoherasamatterof 0-course:"1havenotningto worstthatcanhappentomeisthatImaybekilled,anditwouldbeagreat happinesstodieyoungforsogranda cause."InAugust,1914,hefellinLorraine.Joseph,thefuturepriest,wrote home:"Toliveclosetodangerandto deathmeanslivingcloserto.God,why thencomplain?Nothingcanhappen butwhatiswilledbyGod,andallthat isWilledbyHimisthebestthatcan happen."

Inanotherletter.writteninFebruary,1915,toM.HenryBordeauxhimsell,Cami:letio:andownsthattheterriblewintercampaignisa "Roughandvaluableschool .but IthankGodforatrialthathastrained anddeepenedme... IfIamalive whenthewarends.Iwilldevoteall myenergiestothegreatnessand beautyofmycountry,withthesame energywithwhich.inasmallmeasure. Ioncedefendeditssoil.

Amongthecountlesswar-booksthat havebeenpublished,thelettersofFerdinandBelmonthavewonadistinguishedplace.Theyaremarvellously nobleinspiritandverycharmingin theirvividword-picturesofmilitary life;theyrevealtootheprogressionof asoulthatwasdeeplyreligious,even atstarting,butwhomthedailysacrificesanddutiesofasoldier'slife broughttoahighlevelofdetachment andserenity.CaptainBelmont'sfamily has,ashehad,ahorrorofvulgarpublicityforalongtime,hisparentshesitatedbeforemakinghisletterspublic; theydidso,onlywhenpersuadedthat theirson'sexamplemightthusbecontinued,andcarryonhisworkforhis country.

M.HenryBordeauxconcludeshis bookonthe"NewYouthofFrance"bs thedelightfulsketchofaboyofsixteen,who,notwithoutdifficulty,obtainedhisparents'consenttoenterthe armyonhisseventeenthbirthday.His lettersonthesubjectarecool,wellreasoned,methodical;heputshisargumentsinorder,discusseseverypoint, andattheendsaysasasupremeargument:"FromthemomentthatIenlist, Isacrificemylife"Thisspiritedlittle ladwonthedayhepassedtheexaminationsthatcrownthecollegelifeof allI-renchboys,endthenenlistedin ' theChasseurs becausenaving metmanyofthem,helikedtheirspirit.
