¶'hePrimeMinister(Mr.Asquith) addressedameetingatLadybank,io Fifeshire,yesterday,anddevotedhis speechentirelytotheIrishquestion. Hereiteratedthathehadclearly indicatedatthe1909electionthat Irishautonomywasthemosturgent questionoftheday,andhenowventuredtoassertthattheelectorsat the1910electionvotedinthebelief that,aftertheParliamentActwas passed,Irishlegislationwouldhethe nextundertaking.TheHomeRule Billwassupportedfromfirsttolast byundiminishedmajorities,andso farfromitshavingbeencarriedby theIrishvoteithadreceivedthe supportofasubstantialmajorityof theBritishmembersoftheHouseof ('oremops.TheLordshadtwicerejectedtheBillcontemptuouslywithoutattemptinetomodifyorto amendit.Ilehad
andadrillingofvolunteers.Inthat speechhestatedthattheGoverninentwaspreparedtoconsiderproposalsconsistentwiththescopeof theHomeRuleBill,butnosuchproposalsweremadeonUlster'sbehalf.
Onthecontrary,itwasre;:eateilly representedthatnoel2cialprovision thatcouldhedevisedwouldreconcile UlstertotheBillasawhole.There weretwoobviousreasonswhyall patriotsshoulddesire ASettlementbyConsent
Firstly,itwassurreinelyimportant forIreland'sfuturewell-beingthat itsself-governmentshouldnotstart withanourarenttri'mm-hforone
OftenBeenTwitted withbeingMr.Itedmond'ssubservienttool,justassomeinIreland hadtoldMr.Redmondthatbewas his(ter.Asquith's,tool.Therewas notrnthineitheraccusation,for theyhadmerelyco-operated,and neitherpartywasashamedofacooperationofwhichthewholeofthe Liberalpartyandnearlyfour-fifths oftheIrishpeopleapproved.There wasabundanceofevidencethatthat co-operationhadpracticallytheunitedsupportofalltheself-gaverning dominions.(cheers,Itwas,therefore,acompleteconstitutionalcase fortheapplicationoftheParliament Actwhichwouldnextsessionmake !IonicRuleoperative.Theywould agreethattheactionofstatesmenin amatterwhichhadreachedthis stareoughtnottobeaffectedordeflectedby TheMenaceofForcibleResistance.
