A rchbishop William Joseph Foley is the son of the late Maurice and the late Augusta Foley. He is the fourth Archbishop of Perth and the first to be born in* Western Australia where he first saw the light of day at Nedlands on June 20, 1931. His brothers are Maurice and Kevin and his sisters are Kathleen O'Hara and Elizabeth Curtis. Archbishop Foley was educated at CBC Perth, St Charles's Seminary at Guildford and at the Brignole-Sale College in Genoa, Italy. On September 12, 1954, he was ordained a priest at the Holy R osary Church, Nedlands, by the man he has succeeded — Archbishop Goody, who was then Auxiliary Bishop of Perth. As Father Foley, he was assistant priest at Shenton Park from 195457, St Mary's Cathedral from 1957-
62 and Diocesan Director of Mission Aid Societies and the Catholic Migration and Welfare Association from 1962-69. He was Diocesan Promoter of Vocations from 1969-71 and parish priest of Maddington-Lynwood from 1971-76 before becoming Dean and Administrator of St Mary's Cathedral from 1976-81. O ther positions he has held include Diocesan Priest Adviser to Christian Life Groups, State Chaplain of the Knights of the Southern Cross and Chairman of t he Senate of Priests of the Archdiocese. Consecrated and installed Bishop of Geraldton on September 9, 1981, he is a member of the Australian Episcopal Committees on Education, Mission and the Liturgy. He was elected Archbishop of Perth on November 8, 1983.
