Follow-up to mission feature Perth Missions Director Father Pat Ahern was an avid r eader of The R ecord last week which featured a story on the Bethania Hospital in Pakistan.

The written policy of the A ustralian Democrats does not appear to support a basic grant, but favours needs -based-funding for non-government schools.

Another important element in NCEC policy is the retention of the use of the average cost per child in government schools in determining the level of grants to non-government school children.

The Liberal Party policy supports this method for the calculation of grants.

Uni raided BETHLEHEM (NC) — Bethlehem University, a V atican-sponsored institution, has is.sued a protest after a late night entry into the university grounds and buildings by Israeli soldiers who confiscated posters, papers, photos, books and notebooks.

t wo bishops showed the link between the Servite Order and the archdiocese of Perth and its clergy, religious orders and other institutions, Father Liam Mackie OSM., vicar provincial said last Thursday.

For the 750th anniversary of the Servite Order and the 25th anniversary of Servite College, Bishop Healy and Bishop Quinn were chief celebrants, showing the link with the apostolic tradition. Father Nlackle explained.

Bishop Healy noted that compared with the other Middle Age mendicant orders Franciscan, Dominican, Carmelite and Augustinian the Servites were the youngest and smallest order but a Servite had assured him that quality often had advantage over quantity.

Father Leo Spice OSM, in his homily said the past accomplishments of the order did not preclude the necessity of present members striving for personal holiness and unashamed witness to the gospel of Jesus Christ.

For the NUM, the cathedral choir and the college student choir sang under the direction of Pat Branson.

Father Mackie thanked NN anneroo and Joondanna parishioners, the Servite Third Order. the Knights of St Philip, the college advisory boards and the many past students and supporters of the Servites for their presence at the Mass.

At last the big moment had come for Noel Dwyer and his shipmates in HMAS Junee when they lined the upper deck 12 miles off the Monte Bello Islands.

For months they had ferried VIP scientists and stores between Onslow and the islands, and now the time for the British atomic explosion had come.

The Australian Sisters of Saint John of God are sending a second team of sisters to Pakistan to help the local Catholic community hold on to their Catholic hospital.

The 70-bed Fatima hospital in Sarghoda. Rawalpindi has suddenly lost the services of three German sisters.

Their institute had conducted the hospital since it was established in 1965 by the German Misereor Lenten collection, the equivalent of the Australian Catholic Relief.

Urgent call The Sisters of Saint John of God who are already in Pakistan got an urgent call from Bishop Pereira of Islamabad.

Although their order is short of sisters in Australia, they have mounted this temporary operation as a missionary response.

The hospital has a staff of 74 and is situated in a parish conducted by the Mill Hill Fathers.

In top physical condition on the day of the race, the crew waited anxiously in Crawley Bay for the starter's gun. They got away well, but after five strokes Noel's oar slipped out and he sat as a shame-faced passenger as the rest of the labouring crew pulled the Navy to its first victory.

After having served six months in HMAS Tobruk, he was transferred to Manus Island. This had originally been considered a punishment assignment but by now it was a sought-after posting because of the realisation among the ranks that a lot of money could be saved in 12 months up there.

The tropical weather gave rise to a monumental thirst and for one combined exercise involving the navies of Britian, Australia, Canada and New Zealand a freighter was sent from Hong Kong with its entire cargo consisting of San Miguel beer.

Noel was occasionally on shore patrol with the main duty of rounding up naval drunks. They were loaded onto a tip truck and the tipping mechanism was used to dump them on the wharf.

The truck he drove was one of many that had been abandoned in the jungle at the conclusion of the war and it had a mere 30 miles on the speedometer. When he was moved to HMAS Junee she was patrolling off Onslow keeping an eye on a Japanese pearling fleet of about 30 boats with a mother ship.

The Australian authorities had stipulated that the Japanese must operate only in an area laid down.

The Japanese knew there were better pearls in prohibited waters nearby and they got up to a number of dodges to fish the banned stretch of sea.

For instance, by the light of dawn, the Junee's crew would count the

It had been an interesting period. he crew had mixed with vital people of a sort they were not used to meeting in everyday life and had enjoyed the NAAFI hospitality ashore on the Monte Bellos.

Sir William Penny, known as the father of the British atomic bomb and a passenger in their ship, had given them some details of the device and told them what to expect when it was exploded.

Junee's crew was issued with discs to wear on their shorts to measure any radiation that might come their way as they stood a dozen miles offshore.

They were told to turn their backs, cover their eyes and count to a certain number before looking towards the big blast.

They followed instructions to the letter, and later it was found that no radiation at all had registered on their discs.

As the mushroom cloud was ascending. Noel raced below to relieve his mate in the engine room so that he could come up and have a look. He opened a heavy steel door just as the rush of wind from the distant explosion reached the ship with such force that it ripped the door from his grasp.

The whole exercise left Noel and his shipmates with mixed feelings.

They were pleased to be among the few in Australia to have seen an atomic explosion, but the awesome power of the device imprinted an indelible impression on their minds.

The youthful Dwyer had joined the Navy for a number of reasons.

He had been unable to obtain an apprenticeship, service life would impart the discipline he felt every young bloke needed, there was a hint of adventure and a promise of travel.

When training ended, his first seagoing trip was to New Zealand in the old light cruiser Australia.

Twelve months at Garden Island (now HMAS Stirling) followed to maintain the old corvettes awaiting their last voyage to the breaker's yard. Sailors wielding hammers in the bilges of the venerable vessels were jokingly warned not to hit too hard in case they sank them.

When Noel arrived the Navy was hanging its head in shame because it had never won the inter-service "head of the river" rowing regatta.

The schools at which he was educated were St Patrick's Convent at West Perth, the East Fremantle Convent, the Brigidine Convent at Subiaco, CBHS at Highgate and St

Patrick's Boys' School in Wellington Street — all except one of which no longer operates as a school, he reflects.

He took various jobs in an unsuccessful search for an apprenticeship until he served in the Royal Australian Navy as a mechanical engineer from 1952-58.

For 14 years after his discharge

It was the old decoy trip and it was stopped only when the Navy called in the RAAF to patrol over the fleet at irregular and unpredictable intervals.

Noel's next move was to the naval air station at Nol.vra, where he and his section maintained services such as hot-water systems and emergency power supplies for the airstrip.

As a training station for aircrew, it had the usual quota of incidents and accidents, including some fatalities, and the sound of the alarm siren was often heard.

From there he was posted to HMAS Cootamundra, based in Sydney but operating out of Darwin to superintend the Japanese fishing fleet working Gulf of Carpentaria waters. Darwinites called the ship the Cootamaru because it was always so close to the Japanese vessels.

Noel spent time ashore at Melville and Bathurst Islands and once had five days camped with a little group from the ship at the mouth of the Liverpool River in case any of the Japanese crews attempted to land.

In the event none did and the sailors' interest was centred on tribal aborigines camped on the opposite bank of the river. Noel's pidgin picked up at Manus was of some use in communicating with them, but in the main they were a silent lot.

Two or three of the elders occasionally crossed over to bake in the coals of the Navy's camp fire fish the sailors caught in the river. The results were delicious meals eaten in silence in the company of the stoical elders.

At the end of the tour of duty in the north, the residents of Cootamundra invited the crew of the ship to a memorable festival weekend in the town after which it was named.

Shortly after his discharge from the Navy in WA, Noel met the crewmate from the Junee he had rushed down to relieve so that he could see the Monte Bellos atomic explosion.

The man was now a fireman at Perth Airport.

The mate said it was a good job and urged Noel to join the airport fire service, an idea with which he concurred.

"I'll give you a list of the questions they ask at the interview," his helpful friend volunteered, "and you'll have no trouble in getting in." The interviewing officer was subsequently astounded at the excellence of Noel's answers.

"You know," he said, "I've interviewed hundreds for this job and your answers are by far the best I've received."

Noel's first posting after training was to Cocos Island where he was the only fireman. In addition to maintaining the fire and water tenders and the ambulance, he had to train volunteer crews for them.

He was the films officer, the secretary-treasurer of the tennis and basketball clubs and was the prime mover in laying out one of the world's most unusual golf courses stretching over crushed coral on either side of the two-mile runway.

Noel and his wife Glenis have three daughters ranging in age from 12 to 18.

This week our series has the saints in mind.

Why do people recall the saints? What makes the saints interesting?

Our authors cast light on those questions as they reveal why the stories of the saints are among the treasures of our history as Christians.

Father John Castelot writes that the prophet. Jeremiah, was not the least bit happy at the prospect of becoming a prophet at the tender age of 20. Yet he responded to God's call.

People with lots of spirit

W ould a woman ever stand before a pope and say, "Act like a man"?

Catherine of Siena did. This 14thcentury woman said a lot more than that as she negotiated with Pope Gregory XI to leave Avignon and bring thc papacy back to Rome.

Would a nun ever sue a businessman? Frances Cabrini did. She thought a contractor she hired to transform a North Shore Chicago hotel into a hospital was cheating her. She accused him of fraud, fired him on the spot and said, "I'll see you in court."

Both those women were canonised saints. Both were very alive and very human. In fact, those are traits that characterised saints through the ages: vitality and humanity.

Peter Claver ministered to and baptised more than 300,1300 black people during his 40-year career.

At Cartagena in the Caribbean, port of entry for the slave trade in the 1600s, Peter Claver boarded the slave ships and roamed the slave warehouses seeking to bring the people human tenderness and divine salvation. He brought them medicines, food, lemon, brandy, tobacco, clothing and bread.

Peter Claver showed them he recognised their ethnic origins. A warm-hearted man, he went about hugging, loving, dosing, feeding and caring for these multitudes of frightened people. He convinced them he believed in their personal dignity and self-worth.

Today, a dark, weathered statue of Peter Claver stands in the port of Cartagena. Originally it was a white marble likeness. Salt air has darkened it.

Popular tradition says that the black people, with knowing glances, claim that "Father Claver must have been a black, for no white man would have loved us so much."

Very much alive and very human, a man like Peter Claver drew his power from his prayer and the grace of God. Many saints were converts from quite different lifestyles. Augustine once believed the Bible to be poorly written and not suitable for study by intellectuals like himself.

But he was a searcher for truth and did one day find Christ and the ideals of Christian moral living. He also became one of Christianity's most eloquent explainers of the Bible.

That well-known lover of the poor, Vincent de Paul, spent most of his early life hating the poor.

Born in poverty himself, he despised his humble state and resolved t o become prosperous. How? By becoming a priest; moreover, by becoming a clerical opportunist.

Vincent de Paul courted the rich and powerful. Self-ingratiating and charming, he secured highsalaried posts and found the financial security for which he hungered.

Fortunately, he was not without some remnant of conscience. More luckily yet, he met people like Francis de Sales and Cardinal Pierre de Berulle — spiritual giants in

By FATHER ALFRED McBRIDE, 0.PRAEM. the early 17th century. They perceived in him the possibilities of moral integrity and spiritual living.

Gradually, by their influence and God's grace, Vincent de Paul changed from clerical opportunist to champion of the poor.

In the second half of his life, Vincent de Paul initiated a host of valuable Christian ministries: the parish mission, continuing education for the clergy (the Tuesday Conferences), a new model for seminary training, a widely used outline for a 10-day retreat, nursing homes for senior citizens, relief services for war victims, a ransom

fund to free slaves (he had once been sold into slavery by pirates), a religious order of men - the Vincentians - and a religious order of women the Daughters of Charity, under the leadership of Louise de Marillac.

No question Vincent de Paul was very much alive and profoundly concerned with the human. A whirlwind of action, he accomplished all his ventures without benefit of phone, car, plane or any other such tool of communications. How he found time to write 3.000 letters remains a mystery.

All the prophets needed the Spirit of the Lord to carry out their almost superhuman task.

They needed wisdom andunderstanding to interpret the signs of the times.

They needed prudence and c ounsel to advise people judiciously.

They needed fortitude to carry on in spite of the opposition — often violent — from the people they wanted to help.

This was especially true of Jeremiah. He was born about 640 B. C. at A natoth. a little village some three miles northeast of Jerusalem.

Then, scarcely out of his teens, Jeremiah was called by God to be a prophet.

To put it mildly, the call was not altogether welcome. To the youth it appeared a sentence of doom. He stammered out his lack of fitness and ability. But, although the voice of the Lord may have been just a small whisper in Jeremiah's soul, it was an imperious one. He could not ignore it.

Well might Jeremiah have been frightened at the prospect. He knew all too well from his own keen observations what would be expected of him as a prophet. He was aware of the situation in suburban areas like his home town.

A ndhe was close enough to the big city to havefirsthandknowledge of conditions there.

Religion and morality hadfallen to an abysmally low estate under the kings, Manasseh and Amon, whose reigns covered a half century. Idolatrous worship was openly encouraged. The people needed little encouragement for the tve of religion which catered to the basest human instincts.

again. The popular Assyrian cult of the "army of heaven" (the heavenly bodies), especially of the goddess Ishtar, was quite the vogue.

The temple itself was the centre of idolatrous worship of all types — the temple which was supposedly the dwelling place of the one true God. With religion poisoned at its very source, one could hardly expect the moral condition of the people to have been anything but rotten. And rotten it was. ,4dultery, debauchery, fraud, bribery, oppression, murder — these were the order of the day.

Jeremiah scoured Jerusalem looking for just one decent person.

Here Jeremiah was, a youth of hardly 20 years, commissioned by God to give his people an ultimatum: Repent or perish. Did the prophet stand a ghost of a chance?

The people would just as soon knife him as look at him.

On the other hand, they were his people, and Jeremiah loved them.

It broke his heart to see them as they were. The thought of what their conduct would bring upon them terrified him. That he should have been chosen to announce the chastisement was almost too much to bear.

But above all else, Jeremiah loved God and God had spoken to him. The task must be done.

Chapters 2 to 6 of the Old Testament book of Jeremiah come for the most part from the early period of .Jeremiah 's ministry. They reflect his youthful ardour and the turmoil of his tormented self.

Thus it was to be for half a century. Loving his people, Jeremiah had to preach their downfall. Sincerely attached to the temple, he had to preach its annihilation.

In love with life, withpeace, with joy, Jeremiah had to foretell war, defeat, destruction and exilefor his people.

With a natural instinct for mothering, Beryl Grant a s a child wanted to marry and have six boys . . . she never married but her 'six boys' became thousands.

She has a strong Christian commitment and feels that these things are decided by others.

While there is regret she never became a mother herself -- was never responsible for a new life — she counters it with the knowledge that as a single person she was able to help others, and perhaps, she says, that's what the good Lord intended.

The thing that gives her a glow of happiness is to see a contented child in a happy family setting.

"If I've done anything to help, I'm well pleased," she said.

"I hope that where our paths have crossed, the road to life has been made a little easier for them."

She was the first matron appointed to Ngal-a when it opened in 1958 as a home caring for mothers and children. As 'mother' to more than 10,000 children she brought humility, understanding, love, compassion and humour to the task.

From the bare bones of an institution she created a home of warmth and love and a new chance for many.

In those first years Ngal-a was in essence a refuge for unmarried mothers, it catered for 100 residential and 50 children in daycare.

The home changed over the years to meet community needs.

"As attitudes changed. so did we," Miss Grant said.

"The idea of taking children into care changed. We began to favour short-term rather than long-term situations. Toward the end of my time there we became more involved in family care."

It was certainly a hard job to leave, she said, but you have to give the place a chance to change and you have to know when to stop.

"I retired at 60 because I thought I could use my energies elsewhere." she said.

Energy and faith have been the mainstay of her life. She believes that God's hand has played a big part in the path it took -- in fact, if it had been left to her, she would never have become matron of Ngal-a.

As a senior nurse administrator at King Edward Memorial Hospital in 1959 with triple certificates of general, midwifery and infant health nursing she applied for the post.

"Later I got cold feet and asked for my application to be withdrawn," she said.

"Then the president of the interview committee telephoned me and I told her I didn't think I could do

the job. But she asked me to go for an interview anyway.

She took up the job a couple of months before the official opening, planned furnishings and equipment and organised the transfer to Ngal-a of babies, mothers and nurses from the old Alexandra Home in Lincoln Street, Highgate.

"Overnight I became the unmarried mother of 20 babies and teenage girls — the 17-year-old nurses who themselves needed a lot of support during the changeover."

By the end of the week there were 19 babies at Ngal-a and she wrote in her diary on Christmas Day that year: "We have sheltered more than 250 souls in these first few months."

In the absence of a cook Beryl Grant prepared the first meal at the home. Cooking is one of her great loves and another area where she excels.

Her cook's assistant for the first meal was an old man called Danny. w ho came over from the Alexandra.

"We stoked up the fire and I started to cook breakfast," she said.

"The girls (unmarried mothers) have only porridge, matron," said Danny.

"Not here they won't Danny." she responded. "everyone will eat the same." And they all sat down and ate together.

She remembers too the first baby placed into her arms to care for.

"She was a premature baby brought to me in the rush of my taking over," she said.

"For three years we cared for her until her mother was able to look alter her. A bond grew between us and every year at Christmas and on her birthday, until she was about 1 1 and her mother died, she would come with her mother to see me."

It made the link even stronger because Beryl Grant had lost her own parents at an early age — her father died when she was five, and her mother when she was 14.

Over the years she went to the young girls school break-ups and took great joy in making and icing a cake for her 21st birthday.

A s we sipped tea and munched her delicious almond bread, and talked, another half-iced cake could be seen peeping out of the kitchen. Even in retirement Beryl Grant's children are never very far a way.

Ngal-a had its origins in the House of Mercy which was established about 92 years ago by a small group of women concerned for the welfare of unmarried mothers in the days when they were often disowned by their family, became outcasts and were illtreated in the community.

In 1916 they moved to the Alexandra House and then on to Ngal-a.

It was not until 1921 that laws were introduced into WA allowing the babies to be offered for adoption, so it was common in the early days for the matrons to try to arrange marriages for the girls.

An early annual report says: "Matron had a good year, she organised four marriages."

Beryl Grant may not have arranged any marriages but she has been involved in many as her 'children' have grown up. When she sees them now, happily married with growing families, it is, she

says, gratifying to know that Ngala helped towards that happiness.

She knows only too well the tragedy of a broken family — as hers became on the death of her mother. The children, an older sister, Beryl and a younger brother had to be separated.

"I was fostered by an old family friend and there were no Government grants for students in those days so I had to leave school."

She got a job with the Public Works Department but dreamt always of the day when she would have enough money saved to enable her to study to be a teacher.

"Sometimes the direction in which you think you want to go isn't the right direction for you, and six years later I was steered into applying to the Children's Hospital (now Princess Margaret Hospital) to become a nurse.

"I had enough money saved to buy my uniform and a few clothes and I was accepted at a wage of 10 9d a week."

Eventually, of course, she did get to teach. As she moved through her profession — at one stage she was awarded an S800 Florence Nightingale scholarship — she taught nursing and mothercraft skills to others.

In 1950 she went on a three year working holiday in England, then returned to undertake midwifery training at King Edward Memorial Hospital.

She was a nursing sister there for a year before going to Victoria to do her Child Welfare Training at the Presbyterian Babies Home in Melbourne.

In 1961 Beryl was made a Fellow of the College of Nursing and in 1968 she was the first West Australian nurse to receive a Winston Churchill Fellowship.

She left Australia to study Child Care and Work for the Unmarried Mother in America, under the US Department of Health, Education and Welfare Children's Bureau, and later in Britain with the Council for the Unmarried Mother and her Child.

Much of this time was spent in the study of adoptions, especially

Professionally she made an indelible mark but her strong love of children sought expression throughout her life.

Of the many stories written about her, this anecdote was printed a couple of years ago and typifies her attitude to children and their place in life: "Until the nature of her increased involvement in community work made it impractical, she always took a child with her wherever she went.

endowed with the same maternal instincts did not bother her.

"As inaugural secretary of the Nurses Memorial Centre, in Kings Park Road, she arranged with another well-known matron to go to the bank to try to borrow money to start the building of the centre.

"As the two walked to Miss Grant's car, the other nurse caught a glimpse of the little girl inside, and said: "What did you bring her for? What are you going to do with her?"

The response was predictable: "Take her with me. Mothers take their children to the bank, why shouldn't I take one of mine?"

"In the manager's office she leant across his desk, `Could I have one of your pencils please.'

"She gave the proffered pencil to the child together with a scribbling pad, saying: 'Now there you are dear, you sit down there and play with that.'

"They got the loan."

A warm, welcoming woman she says there have always been fashions in caring for children but as long as the love element is there the rest doesn't matter.

"I remind people that the word disciple comes from discipline and that means teaching," she said.

"Some people may see love as 'giving' to kids — but love is total caring and discipline is protection as long as you know when to stop protecting."

Her competence and capability have not been restricted to those in her professional care.

She was state president of the Florence Nightingale Committee, and in 1971 gave the national Florence Nightingale Oration.

Since 1960 she has served on the management committee of the

Lady Gowrie Centre and is noN\ chairman of the centre.

In 1973 she was appointed to the National Board of the Australian Inland Mission, the first time in 50 years that a woman had been appointed to that body.

She has also been a vice-president of the WA Council of Churches and has served on its Social Questions Committee and was a panel member from the inauguration of the WA Panel of Frontier for a number of years.

In 1976 she was appointed chairman of the Committee Into Residential Childcare, a body mooted by both the Catholic and Anglican Archbishops.

It is very important work which she is still involved in and the committee, which was set up to stud the state of residential childcare in this state, acts as an independent c onsultative body to the Government.

"It's our job to recommend perceived needs to the Government," she said.

Beryl Grant is well used to playing 'Devil's advocate' at times and has notched up a wealth of experience in committee work.

In 1974 she was elected national president of the College of Nursing Australia and in 1977 was the state president of the Royal Australian Nursing Federation and a member of the state committee of the College of Nursing, Australia.

She is currently working on an inquiry for the Christian Brothers on their Clontarf and Castledare centres.

"They've been doing marvellous work against rising costs," she said.

Media award

Channel Seven sporting commentator, Mike Van Rens, won the Electronic section of the inaugural Media Competition awards held at Gloucester Park recently.

The Western Australian Trotting Association invited entrants from the media to enter the competition which is split into three divisions: Electronic (covering radio and TV); Photographic and Press.

The competition will be conducted quarterly and the winner from each diN,'ision receives $250.

Mike won his award for the story on the champion stallion, "Black Irish", winner of the

Channel Seven $75,000 A ustralian Pacing Championship.

Mike's story covered the sensational world record-breaking run by Black Irish and the celebrations held at trainer Bill Horn's butcher shop in Hilton.

For Bill Horn the win was the pinnacle of 12 years as a trainer and champagne flowed freely amongst staff and customers at the shop.

Football boost

The "Black Irish" story was telecast on Channel Seven's evening news bulletin on Saturday, December II. Mike, a true racing and trotting enthusiast, who also owns a few mares and stallions as a hobby, was very pleased with the introduction of the Media Competition by

the WATA and to be chosen as first winner in the Electronic Section.

Channel Seven's sports department now presents a unique racing service covering both trotting at Gloucester Park on Friday nights and live crosses to Ascot on Saturday and public holidays.

• What concerns the pope with respect to annulments is that they in no way compromise the Church's teaching on the indissolubility of marriage and that they not be mistaken as a form of Catholic divorce. The Holy Father has often reiterated the basic requirements of the law before the declaration of nullity can ensue.

Is the church becoming more "democratic- and is this tendency reflected in the new legislation?

Does the law contain penalties? What happens when the law is broken?

• Any association or society must have sanctions related to its code of behaviour. The sanctions vary according to the seriousness of the action.

• The code recognises the right of a Catholic to resign from membership in the Church by a formal act. This stems from the Church's teaching of freedom of conscience.

• On the other hand Catholics who profess to be full members of the Church and who knowingly present or give witness to teachingg opposed to the Church's teaching are contravening Church law and that has consequences for them and the Church.

PERSPECTIVE IS NECESSARY: Civil law uses fines, gaol sentences and in some places capital punishment as penalties for breaking society's laws.

Church "penalties" are different.

They relate to the spiritual not the body or material goods.

Also the Church stands ready at all times to forgive one who repents and to welcome them back to the community.

In its treatment of matrimony, for example, it stresses marriage as a covenant or commitment of the partners to a community of life and responsibility for each other, as opposed to the old code's emphasis on marriage as a legal contract.
