ONCEuponatimemenlivedinfear.They wereafraidofwar-notsomuchoneon earthorlandorsea,butawaragainstsomethingintheirownhearts.
Thewarwasnotnuclear,butmoral:itwasnota fearofwhatmightbedestroyedontheoutside,but whatmightbechangedwithin.Everyoneknewit wouldbeginwithaflashofLightdescendingfrom heaven.Andonenight,theLightappeared:"TheWord becameFleshanddweltamongstus."TheLightproducedaterrific"fall-out"ofcelestialenergy,inthe formofgrace,forgiveness,salvation,faithandlove. Itpenetratednotsomuchbodiesandcells,ashearts andsouls;itmade"newcreatures"eventhoughmen werelivinglikeanimals;turnedcrookedtax-collectors intohonestmen,star-gazersintotheologians,bigots intokinsmenoftheKing.
Butsomehoworother,menwereafraidthatthe greatLightwouldrevealtheirdarkmotives,theirevil lives,theiradulteries,andtheirpettythieveries.To protectthemselvesfromthe"fall-out"whichwas countertotheirhabits,theydidnotbuildbomb shelters;theydrovetheLightoftheWorldintothe darknessofacave.Hotelmanagersprotectedthemselvesfromthefall-outofcharitybypostingupa"No Room"signontheirinns;headsofgovernmentpretendedtobefriendlybutunsheathedswordssothat theLightthatcametogiveanEternalcrowncould notstealawaytheirtinselones.

Now,inthistwentiethcentury,thecavehasonce morecomeintoitsown.Therefugeesarenolonger ontheearth;theyseekshelterunderit.Itisstilllight thatisfeared,butnottheLightofGod,butaflame ignitedbymen.
The"fall-out"whichterrorisesisthetiniestthingin theuniverse-anatom.Governments,publicists,commentatorsurgecitizensandneighbourstoborelike molesintothebowelsoftheearth;someevenurge usingviolencetoresistanintruder.
Intowhatstrangecyclehaslighttakenus!Wedrove oneLightintoacave-andnotaLightwemade,but Onethatmadeus.Nowwecrawlintoacaveinawe ofalightthatourownhandshavefashioned.Isthere anyconnectionbetweenthetwo?Webelievethereis.
First,assoonasmanceasestofearGod,hebeginsto fearhisfellow-man.Assoonastheconscienceno longerwhispersthatSomeoneislooking,andwewill havetorightthestrong,thatitbeginstoshrinkin terrorfromtheneighbour.

Greccio,Italy:ThestoryofChristmasisillustratedincountlesscrechesthroughoutthe world,butthefirstonetheworldeverknewremainsisolatedandrelativelyunknownona windsweptItalianmountainside.
Itwasinacaveherein GrecciothatSt.Francisof Assisiassembledthefirst -Christmascreche.The warmthandhumilityheleft onanight738yearsago stillremains.
Thecaveisapproached throughanarrowvalley, dottedwiththecypresses andshiveringpoplartrees, linedoneithersideby mountains.ItistheValley ofRieti.Attheendofthe ATINY valleyinthemountains isAssisi,andonlyafew milesawayisthegreatcity ofRieti.Totherightis MonteLacerone,siteofthe cave.Theapproachnow leavesthehighway,crosses ariver,and ing,whitestoneroad,climbs themountain.

Notmuchhaschanged heresinceSt.Francis'time. Thefieldsarefarmedwith rusticimplementsbysimple peasants,dressedmuchthe sameastheywereinhis day.Alongtheroadarean oldmanleadingatwowheeledcartdrawnbya hugewhiteoxandawoman balancingacopperpotof wateronherhead.They greetthetravellerwith "LaudaturJesusChristus" (PraisedbeJesusChrist), andheanswers,"Semper" (Always).
Theroadgrowsnarrower, steeperandmorewinding. Onthetopofthemountain totheleftaretheremains ofanoldcastle,andhalfwayupthemountaintothe rightisthetinymonastery builtuparoundSt.Francis' cave.Itisperchedprecariouslyonaledge.
Downinthevalleybelow,St.Francisusedtopass. Intheyearheassembledthe firstcreche,1223,the"poverello"ofAssisiwasoldbeforehistime.Hewasonly
42gearsold,butwithinthree yearshewoulddie.For sometimenowhiseyeshad beentroublinghim,hissight wasfailing,andhehadto gotoadoctorinRietifor aseriesofpainfultreatments. Thereisalittleshepherd's hutfartheruponthetop ofthehill,hardlymorethan aheapofstones,where Francislikedtostopforthe nightalongtheway.Head-
now,asthefeastofChrist's birthdrewnearinthisyear of1223,heconceivedthe ideaofmakingthestory ofChristmasmorevividin themindsoftheshepherds andfarmerswholivedhere.
TheholymanofAssisi gaveinstructionsforwhat hewantedandthepeople joinedinenthusiastically. EvenLordGiovanniVellita, wholivedinthecastle, joinedin.Francishadthis
leadtoastonearchwayand' atinygarden. Butevenbeforethat,there washardlyamajoroccasiononwhichhedidnotcall allmen,especiallythe world'sleaders,totheirduty ofpreservingpeaceinthe world.Hemadeaspecial appealforpeaceatapeace rallyatCastelgandolfo,his summerresidence,onSeptember10.Inhisdiscourse onthatoccasion,heturged theleadersoftheworldto "facesquarelythetremendousresponsibilitiesthey bearbeforethetribunalof history."
Afewdayslater,onSeptember29,heissuedan apostolicletterurgingprivateandpublicrecitationof theRosaryforthatpeace which"intheChristian meaningsignifiesinsightof mindsintothatsenseof truth,Justiceandperfect

Threeapostolicletters camefromPopeJohn'shand duringtheyear.OnMarch 18,byapostolicletter,the PopeproclaimedSt.Joseph tobepatronoftheSecond VaticanCouncil.Amonth lateronApril18,asecond apostoliclettersummoned theCatholicsoftheworld toanovenaofprayersbeforePentecostSundayto prayforthesuccessofthe ecumenicalcouncil.Thethird wasthatofSeptember29, whichurgedtherecitation oftheRosaryforpeace.

Fortunately,theIrish,firstandlargestsinglegroup ofimmigrants,lookasif-thoughtheydonoteven belongtotheCommonwealth-theyaregoingtobe allowedtocontinuetoenterBritainas-theywish.They havebeencomingintoBritaintoworkforovera century.They,morethananyothersinglegroup,have helpedrebuildtheChurchinBritain.TheIrishare rightnextdoor,andthegovernmenthassaidthatit cannotchecktheirentry.BecausetheimpactofimmigrationrestrictionswillfallheavilyonWestIndians, thegovernmenthasbeenaccusedofracialprejudice.
Therehavebeenraceproblemsinrecentyears,particularlyin,districtssuchasLondon'sNottingHill, whereWestIndianshavecongregated.Theinfluxof underprivilegedandoftenunletteredpeopleofanother culture,vyingforjobsandhouseswithnativesor immigrantswhoarrivedearlier,hascreatedtensions. Thegovernmentapparentlybelievesthatthesituation couldleadtogrowingracialprejudice,andseesinthe immigrationcut-backonewaytostemsuchagrowth.

SeveralCatholicorganisationsarehelping'directlyto tackletheproblem-theCatholicMarriageAdvisory Council,theSocietyofSt.VincentdePaul,theSisters ofMercyamongothers.Bravestperhapsistheeffortof theCatholicHousingAidSociety,asmallgroup foundedsixyearsagowhichlendsmoneyatavery lowinteresttodeservingcasestobuyaccommodation. Sofarithassettledabout160families,anditsexpenses arelessthan2.45ayear.
IndifferentCatholics
Aside-issueontheimmigrationproblemwasventilatedbytheCatholicHerald,whichcriticised,ina front-pageeditorial,theindifferenceoftheCatholic communityasawholetotheproblemsofyoungIrish boysandgirlswhodriftintothebigcitiesofBritain andgetintotrouble.Suchyoungstersformonlya tinypartoftheoverallnumberofIrishimmigrants,it said,"butincertainareastheyrepresentanalarmingly highproportionofthetotalnumberofyoungpeople comingintothehandsofpoliceandwelfareofficers."
"ThescandalisthattheCatholiccommunityasa wholewillnothelpthem.Non-Catholicprobation officersandothersocialworkersboilwithresentment astheytellyouoftheireffortstohelpyoungCatholics withoutaidorencouragementfromCatholicquarters," itadded.Lastyear800outof6,500unmarriedmothers inLondonwereIrish.

THEPARENTSwhoarecareless,indifferent,insensitive,orjustselfish,oftenuseittocoveramultitudeof theirsinsofomissionorcommission.Verycasually, theyemployittoexcusethemselvesortopassoff lightlythedelinquentconductoftheiroffspring. *
THEOTHER EXTREME
ONTHEOTHERHAND,parentswhoareseriousabout theirroleanddeterminedtoseetheirchildrengrowup goodanddecent,sometimesseemto gotoofartheotherway.Ifnotin theory,atleastinpractice.they demandperfectionfromthemselves asparentsandanequivalentresponsefromtheirpridesandjoys.Whentheyreceive neither,asisalwaysthecase,theyblamethemselves undulyorbecomeevenmoredeinandingoftheirsons anddaughters.Neitherreactionisconducivetofamily peaceandharmony.
Takeatypicaldomesticscene,lateintheevening, inthelivingroomofacouplewithayoungfamily.The kidsarefinallyinbedand,presumably,asleep.The lastglassofwaterhasbeenpoureddownanon-thirsty throatandthelastbitofbick#ringstilled.Ithasbeen along,hardday.Themotherand/orfathersinksinto achair,sighsadeepsighofrelief,kicksofftheshoes, andbeginstothinkoverthe'daywithitsupsand downs,mostlythelatter.
Veryeasily,adeep,almostpervading,senseof inadequacycansettleintothemindandtheheartof theyoungparents.Theybegintowonder,sometimes aloudtoeachother,sometimesinthelonelinessofthe individualsoul."Whatswrong?"-especially,"What's wrongwithusorwithme?Hereweare,reasonably intelligentpeoplewithproofin'ourpastlifeofreasonableefficiency.Yetwecan'tseemtomakethechildren mind,can'tsettlethebickeringandfightingorcalm jealousfears." ThisyearatLeederville sawthefirstexperimentat aY.C.W.groupforTrainee Teachersonthesuggestion ofonestudentherself.There wereeightmembersinthe groupfromvariousdistricts. Findingtimeseemstobe theinsurmountableproblemofstudents,butmaking allowanceforpractice teaching,examsandholidays,itprovedpossibleto planacourseofmeetings overagoodpartoftheyear.
Thisisnodoubtdueto themostrewardingfeature ofthegroup,thatY.C.W. techniquewasabletoform andbetterunderstandtheir vocationwithChristasstudents.Atfirsttherewasa feelingthatateachers-only groupwouldnotappealto thembecausetheywanted todiscoverhowtobejust ordinarypeopleinlife.
Itturnedoutthatteachingandcollegearetheir lifeandwhileworking throughthepreliminary programmeandregularenquiriesitwassoonevident thattheirideasandexperiencewerebeingvividly formedagainstthisbackground.Inadditionitofferedachancetogetadvice andguidanceonproblems thatcameupinlectures,etc.
Manythankstothegirls whohavepioneeredthis work.Itopensupanew opportunityofwhatCatholicstudentscandotoleaven thelifeoftheTrainingColleges.Nextyearitishoped toestablishmoregroupat strategicpoints.Withthis startitmaylaterbecome possibletoformsenior Y.C.W.groupsofteachers aftertheyhavegraduated fromCollege.
LEEDERVILLE(GIRLS)
Oneofthelastactivities oftheleaders'groupwasa visittotheschooltomeet thoseabouttoleave.Insteadofaformalclassroom talk,eachleadertooka groupandspentahalf-hour withthemgoingoverthe wayproblemsofhomelife, leisure,workandreligion hadcomeupintheirlives sinceleavingschool.
Thetalkswerewellreceivedbythegirlsandfor theleaders'parttheywere abletodrawontheexperiencetheyhadgainedconductingtheirownparish sub-groupsduringtheyear.
HIGHGATE(BOYS)
TheGospelfromthe Christmascampaignshowed leadersthemeaningof humilityintheactionof Godcominguponearthasa helplesschildtorestore man'sformerdignity,which hehadforfeitedbythefall ofAdam.
IfGodiswillingtodothis forus,somesmallsacrifice ofpersonalprideorglory shouldnotbetoomuchto expectonourpart.

Thechurchesneedlaymentobringthemessageof Christtotheworldinaconcreteform.BybeingconvincedoftheteachingsoftheGospelandbyfaithfully practisingitindailylife,thelaitywillnecessarily affecttheattitudeandbehaviourofothers.Aseachone worksforthecommongood,thewhole;ofsocietywill heliftedtoamoreChristianplane.
ThecouncilitselfspelleditoutasthedutyofChristianstoworkforpoliticalinstitutionsthatprotectboth theperson'sfreedomofconscienceandhisconvictions. Inoneofitsconcludingsessionsitadoptedacommittee reportstating,however,thatthechurchwillobeyits Lordwhetheritexistsunderajustcivilgovernment orundertyranny.
