CHRISTIANSAND "IMMORTALITY"

"PATMOS,"YAGOONA:DoesnottheChristianreligionstresstheresurrectionofthe bodyasopposedtothepaganGreekideaof theimmortalityofthesoul?

R.:Thatcannotrightlybe said.Onecouldsaythat Christiansstresstheresursectionofthebodyaswell asthefactthatthesoulis immortalofitsverynature, asopposedtotheGreek philosophicalideaofthe soulsurvivingthedeathof thebodywithoutanyprospectofbeingreunitedwith thatbodyintheresurrection.

THEAPOSTLES'CREED

Q.:DoesnottheApostles' Creed, bysaying:"Ibelieveintheresurrection ofthebody,"meanthat thebodyistototalpersonalityofmanwhich goesoutofexistenceat deathandislaterrestored toexistencebythepower ofGod?

R.:No.AllChristians acceptedthefactthatman consistsofamaterialbody andanimmortal,spiritual soul.TheteachingofChrist wasquiteclear."Fearyenot themthatkillthebody,and arenotabletokillthesoul," Hesaid(Matt.10.28).Were bodyandsouloneandthe samething,onecouldnot killtheonewithoutkilling theother.Acceptingthefact ofthesoul'simmortality, Christiansprofessedbelief intherestorationofthe bodyalso,eventhoughthey hadseendeathclaimit,to bereunitedwiththesoul someday.

"PAGANGREEK INFLUENCE"

Q.:Isuggestthatbecause theidea, oftheimmortalityofthesoulmadeits wayintotheChristian faithfromtheGreek philosophers,Christians formanycenturiesspoke oftheirhopeoflifeafter deathasmeaningonlythe immortalityofthesoul.

BIBLICALDOCTRINE

Q.:CloserstudyoftheBible showsthattheideaofany naturalandinherentimmortalityofthesoulmust berejectedbecauseit supposesthebodytobea worthlessthingtobediscardedforever, andbecauseitexcludesafuture destinyoftotallifefor man.

R.:TheChristianideais notthepaganGreekidea; itistheChristianteaching thatthesoul, separatedfrom thebody, everretainsits adaptationtounionwiththe body, withwhichitwillin factbereunitedintheresurrection.Andthatsoulsdo liveoninthemeantimeis evidentfromthefactthat ChristrefutedtheSadducees byremindingthemthatGod istheGodofAbrahamand theotherPatriarchswho cannotbealtogetherdead, becauseGodistheGodof theliving, notofthedead (Matt.22:13).TheCatholic doctrinealonedoesjustice tobiblicalteachinginthis matter.
