Thasbeenbroughttothispaper'snoticethata chain-letterofareligiousnatureisbeingcirculated aroundthisState.Thefirstseemstohavecome fromtheEasternStates.Theletterconcernsanovena toOurLadyofFatima,withtheusualridiculousconditionsofsuchletters.

ThistypeofdevotionisnotwantedintheChurch.It dealsnotwithtruedevotiontotheMotherofGod,but isboundupwithsuperstitiouspracticewhichshould havenoplaceinthelifeofaCatholic.

AlmightyGodisadored,albeitusingtheBlessed Virginasamostpowerfulintercessoralongwiththe SaintswhoareinHeaven,bysensibledevotion,and thereisnoneedofexcessivepracticeswhichhave superstitionastheirmotive.

Recipientsofchain-lettersofanydescription,particularlythoseofa"religious"nature,shouldburn them.Ifthesendersareknow,oftentheyarenot,they shouldbetoldnottoindulgeinsuchfoolishandsuperstitiouspractices.

THEsplashymagazinepressoftodayhas onebadge-itcanfindsexinany subjectandthatmeansonceeach issue.Whetheritbepills,operations,parties orpersons,itisalltheexcusetheyneedto leer.Quiteafewhaveenthusedoverthe discoveryofabirth-controlpill.Underthe pretenceofofferingthelong-sufferingpublic the"knowledgetheyneed,"ithasgiventhem achancetodealwiththeintimaciesofsex asneverbefore.Unfortunatelyitdoesnot endthere.

Lastweekoneofthemorefrequentoffendersinthis linedecidedtogofurther."Free-lovepills"wasits brazencoverheadingand"RevolutioninMorals"the catch-cry.Thetragedyisthatthismagazinewillbe readinnumeroushairdressers'shops,waiting-rooms, andintoomanyCatholichomesforthatmatter.Stirringthemudisnotthebestwaytocleanthepool,but wefeelobligedtowarnCatholicsoftheinsidious paganismbeinghandedoutinthesepublications.

Shamjournalismturnsupatypicalarticleofthis nature:(1)Afewtwo-sentencequotesfrom"authorities"aresupposedtoinformusthatthereisaproblem. Democratically,aCatholicspokesmaniswedgedinto showthattheChurchisoutoftouchanyhow-our sympathytohim.

(2)Theusual"broadminded"supporter,preferably someclergyman.Rev.Hobbin,MethodistDirectorof SocialService,N.S.W.,talksforparagraphs.Thereis nomentionofGodorreligion,butitiscomfortingit youwantapprovalfora"modern"approachtomorality -especiallyfromaparson.

(3)TheEnglishB.M.A.wasforcedtoretractits supportforthepaganbookofEustaceChesseron Chastity.Hencewereceivepagesofquotes,including referencestoSt.AugustineandAquinasthatare libellous.

(4)Intheinterestofafewtears,thereareabundant quotesfromanonymous20-year-oldwomenwhoare supposedtospeakforthemodernwoman.Alongwith themostharrowingfearsofchildbirthyesterdayand today,itsetsusthinkingwhethertherearesupposed tobeanymoralyoungwomenorhappymothersleft inAustraliatoday.Thismagazineapparentlycannot findthem.

TheChurch'sStandInThisMatter

Wheredowestandinallthis?Thereisnoneedfor aCatholicspokesmantosaywhattheChurchhasbeen sayingforyearsineverypublicationonthesanctityof sex,marriageandfamilylife.TheCatholicChurch speaksonmoralsbecauseitspeakswiththemindof Christ.Itcallstheworldtolistenbecauseinthename ofGoditasksthebestinhumannature.Godhasbeen pushedoutoflifeandmankindtodayisinfear, frustrationandfuryasneverbefore.WithoutGod,we lackthemoralfibretostemthecancer,individuallyor asanation,thattodaychallengesreligion,politicsand morals.

Thelife-longloveofmarriagecomesfromGod.Only aChristianviewcansanctifythisyearningofevery youngmanandwomantoloveeachothertilltheydie. Thisisapartnershipthatisbasedontheexclusivegift ofhusbandandwifetoeachother.Whatgenuine couplewantsitotherwise?Todaywehavetogobackto theveryfundamentalstostatethatfaithfulnessisthe firsttestofmarriedlove.Ifrespectforhereverpossiblemotherhoodisthewayofnaturetomakea husbandlookfortherealbeautyofhiswifeasawoman, thenifshesurrendersthis,hergreatestgiftfromGod, themodernwifewillseeherhusbandviewherasno morethanoneofamyriadwhocouldsatisfyhis passion.Shewilllosehimintheverymomentin whichGodhadwantedhertowinhisloveandrespect.

TheChurchiswiseonsex.WeneedGodtoteachus whereweareoftenblindinourselves.Sexisthegift fromGodofhusbandandwifetoeachother,their rewardforpartnershipwithHim.Outsidethispicture itisapassionthatcanshatterallthegoodinthehuman soul.Thereisno"liberation'whenthroughindulgence allloveofGodhasgoneandwelookbewilderedand frustratedbutneverhappy.

ReversalOfTrueRole

Havechildrenbecometheveryenemyofsex,from whichtheyareborn?Thatchild,smotheredinlove,is thelinkwhichbindsbodyandsoulofhusbandand wife.Theyyearntoseetheirownlifegrowingbefore theireyes.Theyseethereanewpersonthinkingwith theirthoughts,speakingwiththeirwords,achildafter themselvesastheyareofGod.

THEpro-MarxistgovernmentofGuinea,inWestAfrica,has takenoverallCatholicprimaryandsecondaryschoolsandhas closedthecountry'sseminaryandsentallthestudentshome.

Theactioncompletedtheseizureofthe 70-oddCatholicschoolsinGuinea,which beganwiththetake-overof44primary schoolsearlierthisyear.Itcamelessthana monthafterthegovernmentofPresident SekouToureexpelledtheheadofGuinea's Hierarchy,ArchbishopGerarddeMilleville, C.S.Sp.,forissuingapastorallettertoprotest againstthethreatenednationalisationofall Churchschools.

ThedecisiontonationaliseCatholicschoolswas takeninAugustatthe annualconventionofthe Democracticparty,the country'sonlypolitical party.ThepartyalsodemandedthatanAfricanbe namedheadofGuinea's Hierarchy.Followingthe convention.President Tourewarnedthatits schooldecisionwas"no emptyorhalf-hearted measure"andsaidit wouldbecarriedoutina shorttime.

Theseizurewascompleted followingavisittoGuinea's capital,Conakry,byArchbishopJeanBaptisteMaury, ApostolicDelegatetoWest Africa,todiscusstheschool problem.Itcameatthe sametimeasGuineasigned anagreementwithcommunistChinaforeconomicand technicalco-operation.

AVaticanbroadcastsaid thatGuinea'sactionisin directconflictwiththepromiseofPresidentToure,who hadsaidthattheChurchin Guineashouldbeentrusted tothenativeclergy.The closingoftheseminary.said VaticanRadio,compromises theveryexistenceofthe nativeclergy.

ArchishopdeMilleville wasreceivedinaudienceby HisHolinessthePopeon September11,butdidnot commentontheGuinea situation.

AFrenchcolonyuntilit becameindependentin1958, Guineahaslongreliedon theCatholicschoolsystem. WhiletheCatholicpopulationofabout30,000constitutesonlyaboutoneper centoftheGuinea'stotal, Catholicschoolshavehad thereputationofbeingthe

LastJune,whenthegovernmentwasfinalisingthe seizureof44ofthecountry's 69elementaryschools,ArchbishopdeMillevilleand Guinea'stwootherOrdinarieschargedthattheactionwas"inthedirection ofaprogressivesuffocation throughtheradicalsuppressionoftheirscholastic work."

TheHierarchy,initsjoint protest,saidthatwhileall theCatholicschoolswere builtbythemissionswith therequiredpermissions,the governmenthadseizedthem littlebylittleandwithno attempttoreachanunderstandingwiththeChurch.

ProtestLetter

Theprotest,co-signedby BishopEugeneMaillat,W.F., ofN'Zerekore,andFather JeanCaudray,C.S.Sp.,ApostolicPrefectofKankan, stated:"Consciousofalwayshavingbeenloyalto thegovernmentandhaving actedforthegoodofthe country,they(theCatholic missions)haveaskedthe governmentthatajustsolutionbefound,asolutionthat willguaranteeoneofthe essentialfreedomsofthe Churchandofparents,who. accordingtotheUnited NationsCharter,havea righttochoosethekindof

educationtheywishtogive theirchildren."

FollowingtheDemocratic partystandonschoolsand ontheHierarchy,ArchbishopdeMillevilleissueda protestpastoraldemanding thattheChurchbeallowed toexerciseitsauthorityin thereligiousfield.

LackOfPriests

The49-year-oldFrenchbornprelatetoldhispeople thatdespitethepartydecisiontheystillhavethe "strictobligattantoseetoIt thatalltheChristianchildrenandcatechumenscontinuetogotothemission stationstolearnthefundamentalsofourFaithandto receiveaChristianeducation."

NEEDFORPRIESTS LATIN,AMERICAcomprisesthe22republicsof CentralandSouthAmerica.Thelargest,Brazil,speaks PortugueseandtheothersSpanish.Thetotalpopulation,nowexceeding200million,hasamorerapid growththananyothermajorpartoftheglobe.Some yearsagoPiusXIIpointedout:"Insteadof160,000 theminimumnecessaryforLatinAmerica,thereare scarcely30,000priests."Bothincityandincountry, thereisadrasticscarcity.Inthecountrymanyparishes haveavacantpresbytery.Inonecasethatcametomy notice,adistrictofover100,000peoplewasministered tobyonlythreepriests.Inthecitythesituationis evenworse.Largenumbers,hundredsofthousands, cominginfromruralareas,havesettledinbeltsaround thecapitalcities.Thedioceses,alreadypoorlystaffed, finditimpossibletorendermorethanatokenofspiritualhelp.

SVaticanofficialshaveexpressedthe beliefthattheHolySeewillnotformally excommunicateCubanPremierFidelCastroand otherCubanleadersforarrestingabishopand expellinghimfromthecountryalongwith135 clerics.

TheHolySeehasissueddecreesofformal excommunicationagainstpersonsmistreatingprelatesthreetimesinrecentyears.Theseresulted fromactsagainstArchbishopFrancoisPoirierof PortauPrince,Haiti,whowasexpelledin1960; AuxiliaryBishopManuelTatoofBuenosAires, whowasexpelledin1955:andCardinalMindszenty.PrimateofHungary,whowasarrestedby theHungarianRedregimein1948.

InthecaseofArchbishopPoirier,theexcommunicationofpersonsguiltyofexpellinghimwas basedonCanons2209,2334and2343.Thedecree ofexcommunicationwasissuedbytheSacred ConsistorialCongregation.

TheseCanonsdealwithinterferencewiththe rightsandlibertiesoftheChurch,withpersons wholayviolenthandsonbishops,andwiththe liabilitiesofaccomplicesintheoffences.

Canon2343,whichpertainstoexcommunication ofpersonswholayviolenthandsonabishop,also wasinvokedinthecaseofBishopTato.

Therewasagrowingrealisation,hesaid,oftheneed forleadershiptrainingin CatholicAction.Douglas Hydehadrecentlypointed outtheimportanceoftrainedleadersintheCommunist planofgaininginfluencein anycountry.TheY.M.C.A. hadbecomemoreconscious oftheneedfortraining leaders.MoralRearmament hadmadeagreatimpression mainlybecauseitconcentratedontrainingindividualstotakeactionaccordingtotheirconscienceand givealeadtoothers.The Churchhadtohelpyoung peopleasmuchaspossible fortheirworkasleaders. Leadersofthisgroup havebeenmakinganenquiryintotheaspectofmarriedlifewhichdemonstrated whatsacrificesyoungmarriedcouplesarefacedwith. Particularemphasiswaslaid onthestrictlypersonalenjoymentsandsomeofthe problemsfacingayoung couplehopingtobuytheir ownhome.

Ayoungcouplelivedwith theirparentssoastosave thedepositforaStatehome. Thishomewassecured afterabouttwoyearsof hardsaving.Theyhadto forfeitallpersdnalnight entertainmentsoastomake endsmeet.Howeverthey advisedthatitismostimportantthatayoungmarriedcouplegoouttogether atleastonceaweek.

Anothercouplefoundthat theycouldkeepthreechildrenontheChildEndowmentuntilschoolage,providingthechildren'sclothes weremadebythemother. Athirdcouplesaidthat mortgagesweretakingabout £6perweekoutofthe workingman'swage.This meantthatthecouple'swage wasbudgetedandthatit didnotleavemuchforany extrasorsaving.

HIGHGATE(BOYS)

TheSocialEnquiryconductedbythisgrouprevealedthatmostplacesof emplornentotherthansmall privatebusinesseshave superannuationschemes,by whichemployeesmaybenefit. Eachleaderknewseveral youngworkerspayingoff cars.andabouthalfasmany whohadpaidfortheircars. About50percentofleaders' contactsholdlifeinsurance policies,whileonlyavery fewhadboughtthemselves ablockofland.Almost everyyoungworkeris saving,althoughmarriage doesnotentertheirminds atthemoment.Apractical meansofsavingincludes fixedbankaccountsand HospitalBenefitFunds.

After'welcomingofficial guests,andallpresent, BrotherErnestgavetheannualreport,thefourteenth oftheCollege.

Hesaidthateducatorsof youthandparents,must havestrongconvictionsconcerningthepurposeofeducation,andthatitisinsufficienttopreparemanmerelytoservetheState,or society.Theessentialaim ofeducation,istoprepare manforwhathemustbe, andforwhathemustdo hereonearth,inorderto attainthesublimeandfor whichhewascreated.

ApproximatelyfiftymembersandfriendswerepresentonSunday,September 24,tohearMonsignorMcMahondeclaretheSt. Columba'sTennisClubopen forplay.Thecourtshave recentlybeenresurfacedand areinexcellentcondition.

Brotherreported,that 1960studentsupheldthe highstandardssetbypreviousclasses.Allfourteen boys,whosatfortheirjuniorcertificate,obtainedit. Sevenofthesepupilsare continuingtheirstudiesat Catholiccolleges,whilethree areattendingtheNortham HighSchool.

Eachyear,twoLynn scholarshipsareawardedto pupilsinschoolsinthearchdiocese,andlastyear,both ofthesescholarshipswere offeredtoNorthamMarist Brothers'pupils.Thetwo boys,wereJohnLyon,and JurijMykytiuk.

Brothersaid,thatinhis opinion,examinationresults cangiveafalsevalueto thepublic,parentsoremployer.Someboysare brandedasfailuresbecause theymissoutontherequirednumberofsubjects. whereasitisthequalityof mindandheart,thefruits ofayear'sconscientious work,thatreallycounts.

SPORTING

Sporting achievements duringtheyear,werethe winningoftheMaristInterCollegetennistournaments, atKitchenerPark,last April,andbeingrunnersup,intheSeniorandJuvenileSections,oftheInterCollegefootballcarnival,at RosaliePark. SpeakingoftheParent's andFriends'Association, BrotherErnestclaimedthat theNorthamMaristAssociation,iswithoutequalin theState.

Duringthepasttwelve months,£1500wasraised. Thiswasusedtolowerthe debtontheexistingclassrooms,payfortheconstructionofareinforcedconcreteverandah,furnishthe receptionroom,levelaportionoftheplayground,anti provide1100worthofbooks, forthelibrary.

Mothers,whohavehelped onthetuck-shop,were thankedfortheirunselfishnessandefficiency.

TheBrothersweremost gratefultoo,fortheassistancegiventhem,bytheSistersofSt.Joseph,andSt. JohnofGod,Dr.Walsh,and the NorthamMunicipal Council.

Inconclusion,Brother thankedhisstaff,allthose whohadhelpedinanyway, tomaketheworkofthe schoolasuccess,andMr. Horner,schoolssuperintendant,whohadgivenmuch assistance.

TheAustralQuartetis oftentobeheardoverthe radio,achievingagood standardofperformance. Heretheinterestisnotso muchintheBeethoven, whichhasmanyrivalrecordings,butinthecomparativelyunknownHaydn, whichisratherbetterthan theBeethovenandwhich hasnootherrecordingat all.Thosereaderswishing tocatchelusivechamber musicwouldbewiseto samplethis. Rubinsteincandealwith thegreatnessofBeethoven andBrahmsasfewother pianistscan.Thissonata obviouslyfollowsthoseof Beethoven'smaturityand, thoughtheyouthfulBrahms couldscarcelyattainto thoseOlympianheights,itis notanunworthysuccessor.

CELEBRITYCONCERTCOOLLYRECEIVED

THElastCelebrityConcertwasnotableforafirstperformance inWesternAustraliaofHonegger'sFifthSymphony.This wasreceivedcoollybytheaudienceandtwoofmyneighbours sleptsolidlythroughit.

Thetragedyof20thcenturymusicistheindifferenceoftheordinarymusiclovertothecontemporary composer.Whileaudiences totalmillionsagainsthundredsacenturyago,probablyfewerpeopleareinterestedinnewworksnow ascomparedwiththen.

Itisoftensaidindefence ofthemodernsthattheinnovationsofBeethovenand Wagnerfacedgreathostility andthatMozartandSchubertdiedpoor;therefore, themisunderstoodcontemporarycomposersareBeethovensandthemusic-lovers

areallbourgeoisPhilistines. Whileitistruethatevery composerbreakingnew groundwasharshlycriticised,almostallofthemhad alargebandofadmirers.

ExcitingFinale

Thefaultmaynotallbe ononeside.TheCapitol Theatreaudiencelistened withrespectandwaswillingtobeconvincedby Honegger,Fewwouldhave rushedoutthenextdayto buyagramophonerecordof it. Itsgreatestmeritwasits excitingrhythmicfinale

which,givenacontrasting middlemovement,would havemadeitmoreacceptable.Therichorchestration andharmoniesthroughout werefullofinterest,but, likesomanyofthemoderns, Honeggerseemsterrifiedof melody.Withoutthat,the workismoreinteresting technicallythanbeautiful. However,wemustthankSir BernardHeinzeforletting ushearitandwewouldall liketohearmoreofour contemporaries,evenifwe findthemdifficult.

Thevisitingartist,Magda Laszlo,provedtobeavery gooddramaticsoprano,singing"Vissid'arte"from "Tosca"particularlywell.

Thesecondhalfofthe concertwasdevotedentirely toWagner;theGoodFriday

musicfrom"Parifa!"was exceptionallywellplayed, butthenourlocalorchestj. alwaysseemstobeatits happybestunderSirBernardHeinze.

Astheseasondrawstoits close,theA.B.C.haveannouncedtheartistsfor1961. SingersincludeJoanSutherland,MaureenForrester andCamillaWilliams.Fou Ts'ongisabrilliantpianist whotooktheopportunityto escapefromtheCommunist worldandtheotherpianists, ClaudioArrauandGina Bachauer,areworldfamous. TheviolinistswillbeRicci, anAmerican,andKogan,a Russian.Therewillalsobe twovisitingconductors,Van OtterlooandDeanDixon. -Amadeus.

"ASPUTNIK AMONGKITES"

THEFridaynightoftheStateDramaFestivalconsistedof fourone-actplays.Ofthese,Patch'sproductionof"The LoveLifeOfACrayfish"wasasputnikamongtoykites.A locallywrittenplay,producedbyitsauthor,JohnGill,itwas veryamusinganddelightfullyacted.

Thereisonelineinit whichwasunintentionally offensivetoCatholicswhere theyoungItaliancrayfisher complainsbitterlyofcatchingnocrayfishafterhehad "paidthepriestforanextra heavyblessingattheBlessingoftheFleet"atFremantle.Itisobviousthat theauthor,whohasagreat dealofrespectforhis Italian'sreligion,tookitfor grantedthatCatholicspay forblessingsandwasquite indulgentaboutthematter.

IamnottakingMr.Gillto taskforaslipofingorance, buttherewasatleastone Catholicinthecastand,as theauthorwastheproducer, theoffensivelinecouldhave beendeleted.

thatgreatcharacter,and pooractingfailedtoredeem apoorplay.

HecalledtheChurch"a unifyingforceagainstthe forcesofdarknessandignorancewhichconstantly threatentheworld."

WhenBuddhistmonksdemonstratedinfrontofhis house,PrimeMinisterUNu toldthemthattheamendmentwouldbepresentedin parliamentasplannedfor thecombinedapprovalof bothhouses."Youarefree todoanythingyoulikein thismatter,ifyoudonot feelconcernforthecountry,"hetoldthemonks.

Inaspecialbroadcastto thecountry,UNuexplained thatthenewamendment, thoughareligiousamendment,aimsatpreventitng bloodshed,civilwar,disintegrationofthecountryand lossofindependence.

WhenBuddhismbecame theStatereligion,hefelt greatjoy.UNusaid.But therewasalsothefearthat non-BuddhistswouldbedissatisfiedandthatevilinfluenceswouldbefeltinBurmafromabroadtryingto stirupdiscontent.Hefeared, too,thatriotsmightdevelop andeventuallytheindependenceofthenationbelost. ForthisreasonBuddhists mustnotbeindifferentto thedesiresofotherstohave theirbasicrightsprotected, hesaid.

ConscienceClause

Heendedwithanappeal toallBuddhistmonksand laymenwhodonotwishto seeinternalstrifeinBurma andwhodonotdesirebloodshedtosupporttheamendmentwithzealandfervour.

Thegovernmenthasrecentlyreverseditsposition anddecidedtoincludeinthe newamendmentaclause forbiddingschoolstoteach religiontoanyminorwithoutthewrittenpermission oftheparents.SomeBuddhistsfearedthatthenew amendmentmightbemisinterpretedandschoolsof religiousminoritieswould feelfreetoteachtheirreligionstoBuddhistchildren.

Originallythegovernment saidthatitrespectedthe sincerityofthemission schools'promisethatsuch wouldnotbedone.However itlaterreversedthisposition.Henceaconscience clausewillbeaddedtothe newamendment.ThePrime Ministerexplainedthatthis clausewouldalsobebindingonBuddhistschools whichcannotteachnonBuddhistchildrenwithout theirparents'writtenpermission.

Eachstudentteamwas underthedirectionofan Americanministerorteacher,andinmostareasan Africanco-leaderandAfricanstudentsworkedalong withtheAmericans.
