Thiswasoneofthepointsmade inthereportreleasedrecentlyby theCommonwealthFilmCensorship Board.

InthereporttheBoardalso mentioned,thoughasoutsideits province,whetherthefinalresponsibilityforwhattheirchildrenseeand hearshouldrestwithparentsor whetheritshouldbeamatterof legislation,forbiddingchildrento attendadultfilms.

Suchlegislationexistsinthe UnitedKingdom,NewZealandand someEuropeancountries.

Thereport,whichcoveredaperiodof18 months,said:

"Manymodernfilmsaresopreoccupiedby sexandviolencethattheyarecompletely unsuitableforchildren.

"UnderthelawsofmostAustralianStates, adviceoftheirunsuitabilitymustbeincluded inalladvertising,butthisisadvisoryonly andinnoStatearechildrendeniedadmission toadultfilms.

"Whetherornotthefinalresponsibilityfor whattheirchildrenseeorhearshouldrest withtheparents,orwhetherasintheUnited Kingdom,NewZealandandsomeEuropean countries,childrenshouldbeforbiddenby lawfromattendingadultfilmsastheyare forbiddenfromenteringliquorbars,isa matteroutsidetheBoard'sprovince.

"Havinginmindthenatureofmany modernfilms,itis,however,aquestionwell worthsomethought,"thereportsaid.

"Eachyearfilmsare becomingmoreandmore matureintheme.Theydeal withsubjectswhichbytheir verynaturearedesignedto shock,suchasrape,nymphomania.homosexuality, prostitution.abortion,drug addiction,delinquency,etc.

"Themesdealingwiththe sordidsideoflifearethe basisofanever-increasing proportionoffilms.

"Fewerandfewerdeal withthemorewholesome andhappiersubjects."

TheBoardsaidthatwhile itstillmaintainedtheview "thatadultAustralians shouldnotbedeniedthe opportunitytoseefilms whichexaminetheproblems ofcontemporarylife,providedtheyarepresentedin amannerwhichisnotobsceneorlikelytoencourage imitationofthepractices portrayed."Nevertheless, "thistrendinentertainment isdisturbingbecauseofIts possibleeffectontheminds ofyoungpeoplewhomay wellgaintheimpression thatcrime,immoralityand violencearethedominant featuresofWesterncivilisation."

TheBoardsaidconsiderablecarewasspentonthe examinationofadvertising forfilms,bothforthetheatre andtelevision.

Thereportsaidthe"seeminglyheavycuttingof films"was"duepredominantlytotheBoard'srefusal toacceptscenesofviolence whichweconsiderexcessive inbothextentanddetail."

"Admittedly,violencein filmsisnotanewdevelopment.Ithasalwaysbeen presentandisanessential partofmanydramas.

"Itisnoticeabletoday, however,thatproducers. particularlyincrimefilms andhistoricalspectacles,oxploitviolencebyshowingin detail,andwithgreatrealism,extremebrutalityaccompaniedbyacallousin differencetothesufferingof thevictim."

Itadded:"Westernsareno longerthestraightforward familyfilmsofthepastbut arebecomingmoreandmore adultinthemewithaccent increasinglyonviolence."

Thereportsaidthatduringthepast18months45 filmsimportedforTVwere rejectedanddeletionswere madefrom2,428.

"Excessiveviolencewas themainreasonforboththe rejectionsandthecuts..It ispointedout,however,that aconsiderableproportionof thecutsweremadeasa resultsoftheBoard'sendeavourtomeetimporters'requeststhatfilmsshouldbe givena'G'classification. permittingunrestricteduse onTV.Inagreatmany casesthefilmscouldhave remainedintactwithan'A,' seethatadvertisingmaterialnotsuitableforchildren, isnotunsuitableforgeneralclassification."

CardinalPointsToResponsibility

THOSEwhoproducemotionpictureswillhaveto takeaccountofthemoralcodesofhumanconduct iftheydonotwishtobecomeaccomplicesinthemost tragiccatastrophethatcanbefallmankind.

ThussolemnlydidCardinalUrbani,Patriarchof Venice,cautiontheproducers,actorsanddirectorswhoattendedthe "MassoftheMovies"held inSt.IVlark'sBasoicain Veniceillconnectionwith the22ndInternational FilmFort'val.

CardinalUrbanisaid:"The moviesareaschooloflife, andthereforeaschoolof moralityforeveryone,particularlyforthosewhohave notbeenabletostudybeyondtheelementaryschool. Theyfindthemoviestheir onlysourceofinstruction."

ResponsibilityAnd Economics

Onemustrecognisethe tealfact,theCardinalsaid, thatthereisaneconomic interestintheproduction ofmovies.Atthesametime, however,personsinapositionofresponsibilitymust denouncethewell-founded suspicionthattoomany filmsincludesequences whichhavelittleornothing todowithartandhavebeen includedforthespecific purposeofsatisfyingthede prayedtasteofapublic seekingviolentformsof sensation.

Therearecertainartists, continuedtheCaftlinal,who excusethemselvesfrom

moralnormsbyattempting toinvokethesovereign rightsofartwhichtheysay cantransformacriminal actionintoamasterpieceof beauty.

"Artists"bound ByMoralsToo

TheCardinalthenwent on:"Withoutwishingto broachthequestionofcon temporaryaestheticalcurrents,itism"dutyandmy righttocalltoyourattentionthattheartofthe cinemacannotescapethe standardswhichgovern humansociety.Aslongas menconceivethedifference betweengoodandevil,as longastheydifferentiate inhumanactsbetweenvirtueandvice,aslongasman continuestorecogniseacode ofmorals,artistswillalso havetosubmittoit,even intheirdaringflightsofart, iftheydonotwishtobecomeaccomplicesinthe mosttragicandtremendous catastrophewhichcanstrike mankind.

"Theartisthasthefull righttodevelopinhisspirit andrepresentdailyreality, eveninitsmostshameful andpainfulaspects,and exercisehisruthlesscriticismagainstthethousand shortcomingsofacorrupt andcorruptingworld,de-

nouncinginjustices,indecenciesanddegeneration, Buteveryonehastheright todemandalsooftheartist thathisdescriptiondoesnot serve,rightlyorwronglyonlyGodisthecertainjudge ofintentions-asanentrance tickettoviceandcrime."

TheCardinaldrewa comparisonbetweenmovies andthehighways.Hesaid thereisalawofthehighwayswhichbindseven

ownersofthemostpowerful cars,becauseitisamatter ofprotectingthelifeand freedomofallwhousethe roads.So,hesaid,there shouldbesimilarlawsto governthemovies,binding notonlythefewconnoisseurs,butalsoprotecting theculturalandspiritual welfareofthevastmasses ofthepublic,fortheremust befundamentalnormsfor moralexistence.

Themaintopicunderdiscussionwillbeaproposedamendmenttotheconstitution.

Aswasreportedlastweek,theBunburysuborganisationoftheParentsandFriends'Federation passedaresolutiontoimposeapercapitalevyon theirassociations.Sunday'sspecialmeetingwill discussthismeasure.

ThelevyimposedbytheBunburymeetingwas intendedtobe£13peryearforeachassociation. ThisexpensecouldextendtothewholeFederation unlessAssociationsoftheFederationarerepresentedatthespecialmeetingwheretheiropinions onthesubjectcanbeexpressed.

Chestertonwasright.Philosophyisall-important, onlysecondtotheologyinthehierarchyofsciences. Thewritertaughtphilosophyfor25yea7§,and-about twelveofthosewerespentexplainingthephilosophyof Communism.Nowitbeginstopayoff;itissoeasyto understandtheSovietforeignpolicyifoneknowstheir philosophy.

TheSovietsystemofphilosophyistoodifficultto explaininanewspaperarticle.But,ifonetookakey word,itwouldbedialectics.WhatisDialectics?Itis theirwayofdescribinghowtruth,ideas,society,matter. economicsandeverythingdevelops,namely,bycontradictionandtension.Supposethereisadiscussionas tohowaroomwillbedecorated.Onegroupfavours blue,anothergrouphatesblueandfavourswhite; finallyasaresultofthetension,redcomesup.Thisis fartoosimpleanexplanation,butthepointisthat everythingtothemgrowsbytension,contradiction. oppositionandconflict.Nature-isdialectical:Dropa seed;itiscontradictedbytheearth;outofthistension betweenthetwo,newbarleydifferinginquantityand qualityfromtheoriginalseedgrows.Thisisfalsethinkingasanyonewithbrainscansee.Buttothem, economicsisdialectic.Thosewhoownproperty(Capitalists)graduallyenslavelabouranddeprivethemof allproperty.ThisintroductionproducesCommunism orthedoingawaywithallproperty.

CommunisticUseOf"Dialectics"

Nowapply-dialecticstotheforeignpolicyofthe Soviets.Accordingtotheirthinking,onemustdo everythingtoincitediscord,discontent,tensioninside everynationuntilitreachesapointwhereCommunismcantakeover.Now,whatisthebestwayto increasethisdiscordwithinnon-Communistnations?

Bydialectics.CauseinternaltroublessoCommunism cantakeover.Sometimesthismeansdrawingback nowandthentoprepareforfurtherconflicts.AsLenin putit:'Nationswillbeconfusedandbewilderedby theSovietsystemifonetakestwostepsforwardand onestepbackwards."Thisisknownasthe"Dialectical March,"whichhasbeentaughttotheschoolchildrenof China.Forexample,twostepsforwardtotakeBerlin, thenifthereisresistance,takeonestepbackwardsby callingaconference,thengotwostepsforwardafter theconference.

HerearefewotherappliedprinciplesofCommunist dialectics:

(1)Whenthenon-Communistworldgainsascientific ortechnicaladvantageinnuclearscitjace,theSoviets organisegroupsinsidetheadvantageouS.'nationsto protestagainstnuclearwar.Butthesesamegroups willsaynothingagainstanycontrolovertheSoviet developmentofnuclearwarfare.IftheSovietshavea technicaladvantage,theyuseitontheeveofaconference.Boththesemethodscreatetensions,thefirst byslackeningpreparednessintheadvantagednation andthesecondbydevelopingpsychologicalinferiority forbargaining.

(2)TheCommunistphilosophybelievesthathistory isdeterminedtoproduceCommunism.Nothingcan stopit.AlltheSovietshavetodoisto"assist"history byintensifyingdivisionsandcivildiscords,social, moralandeconomic.Hence,theCommunistshavea GLOBALscheme;asthelastPartyCongressstates,its goalistotakeovertheentireworld.Thefreeworld, notunderstandingthephilosophyofCommunism.

PARTY'SSTAND ONEDUCATION

THEAustralianCountryPartyinNew SouthWaleshascomeoutinfavourof governmentassistancetoapprovedprivate schools.

UndertheCountryParty'snewplan,theStatewould payallinterestonloansraisedbytheindependent schoolsforconstructionorexpansion.

TheCountryPartybaseditsdemandforStateaidto privateschoolsonthe"beliefthatcontinuanceofthe presentdualsystemofStateandIndependentSchools operatinginNewSouthWalesisanintegralpartofa freecommunity."

TheA.L.P.,presentgovernmentpartyinNewSouth Wales,hastakenanofficialstandopposingStateaidto independentschools.Yetseveralleadingmembersof thatpartyinparliamentexpressedagreementwiththe CountryParty'snewproposals.Onememberofthe StatecabinetsaidalargenumberofLaboritesfavour payinginterestonloanstakenoutbyindependent schools.

TheN.S.W.LiberalPartyhasnotadoptedafirm policyregardingaidtoindependenteducation.

SANCTITY,AND NON-CATHOLICS

HOLINESSnotonlyexistsamongProtestantsbutisevenfairlywidespread amongthem,aJesuittheologiandeclaredat aconferenceinAssisi,Italy,onholinessinthe Church.

ThespeakerwasFatherDomenicoGrasso,S.J.,ProfessorofDogmaticTheologyandMissionaryCatechists attheGregorianUniversityinRome.

Hewasspeakingon"Aretheresaintsamongour separatedbrothersoftheWest?"atthe19thChristian StudiesCourseatAssisi'sChristianCitadel.Three cardinalsandtheprivatesecretarytoHisHolinessthe Popewereatthecoursewhichwasattendedby=are thanathousandpersons.

Thethemeofthisyear'sweek-longmeetingwas takenasinthepastfromtheCreed.Thisyear'sarticle was"Ibelievein theHolyChurch."Gregorio PietroCardinalAgagianianandothersspokeonholinessasamarkoftheChurch.

FatherGrassoexplainedholinessamongthoseoutside theCatholicChurchasfollows:"Theuniversalityofthe RedemptionachievedbyJesusChristimpliesthatgrace comesfromGodandisgiventoeveryindividualwho trieshisbesttoliveaccordingtothedictatesofhis ownconscience,enlightenedorless-enlightenedby Revelation."

Afterstatingthisprinciple,theJesuittheologian describeditslimits.Hesaid:"Thenormalplacefor thedistributionofgraceistheCatholicChurch.This meansthatgracecannotbediffusedwiththesameintensityandabundanceinsideandoutsidetheChurch." MajorMarksOfTheCatholicChurch

Heemphasisedthatholinessisacharacteristic-one oftheclassicfourmarks-oftheChurch.Withoutthis charateristic,hesaid,therewouldbewantingoneof thefundamentalcriteriafordistinguishingbetweenthe trueandtheuntruechurch.

Butherehemadeitclearthatthereferencewasto "heroicandcharismaticholinesswhich,accompanied byextraordinarygifts,canbeeasilyinterpretedasa proofofthetruthofthechurchinwhichitisfound."

(Theword"charism"comesfromaGreekwordfor "gift."Inthestricttheologicalsenseacharismisan extraordinarygracegrantedtoindividualChristiansfor thebenefitofothers.)

Inthesecondpartofhislecture,FatherGrassospoke ofmeansofachievingholinessinmodernProtestantism. Henotedadefinitetrendawayfroththespiritofprotest anddenialcharacteristicofthefoundersofProtestantism,andamovementtowardsrecoveringthemeansof sanctitywhichwereonceabandoned.

Hesaidthisrecoveryistakingplaceparticularlyin theareasofthesacramentsandofascetics.

FatherGrassosaidProtestantismnowshows"a nostalgiaforthesacraments,especiallyfortheSacramentoftheEucharist,forthevenerationoftheBlessed VirginMaryand-markedly-fortheasceticallife whichhasledtothefoundationofreligiouscongregations ."

ReligiousPeopleAreBestEvidence

Inthethirdpartofhistalk,FatherGrasso'broached thepracticalquestionoftheexistenceofsanctityin Protestantism.Hefollowedadistinctiongenerally acceptedbyCatholictheologiansamong"common, select,heroicandcharismaticsanctity."

HesaidhethoughtitcouldbesaidofcommonsanctitythatitisfairlywidespreadinProtestantism.

Hecited"proofofthisinthemanyhonestandtruly religioussoulsonemeetseasilybothinEuropeandin countrieselsewhere."

FatherGrassotouchedbrieflyuponauthorswhohave writtenaboutthesaints.Hesaidthatwithrare exceptionstheyarealwaystreatingofCatholics.

HenamedtwoProtestantswhohadclearlyachieved eminentholiness-GerhardTersteegen,aGerman,and aSwissgirlnamedAdeleKamm.

Inconclusionheindicatedthattherealreasonfor thescarcityofhighersanctityinProtestantismistobe foundinthewidepspreadlossamongpost-Reformation bodiesofthefullCatholicconceptoftheEucharist.

"Thefirstproblem,communism,endangersallthe otherpeopleoftheworldas wellasthePhilippines," CardinalSantossaid."There iscommunistinfiltration hereatpresent,especially amongstudents."

Heisconfident,however, thatcommunismwillnever rulethePhilippines.

"OurpeoplearesodevotedtoOurLadyandso manyofthemarefaithfulto thefamilyrosary,"hesaid. "Forme,thatisaguarantee thatthePhilippineswill neverfallintothehandsof thecommunists."

Theimmediatematerial problemsarethosetraining youngmenforthepriesthoodandbuildingmore churches.

"Vocationstothepriesthoodhavebeenincreasing," theCardinalstated,"but notproportionatelywiththe growthofthepopulation.

Vivaldi'sGloriainDis familiaronlytousonrecords,thisbeing,ratherremarkably,thefirstperformanceinWesternAustralia. Vivaldiinthelastdecade hasbecomesomethingofn classicalbest-seller.his'Four SeasonsrivallingtheBrandenburgsinpopularity,but heislittleappreciatedin WesternAustralia,apparently. Hewas,ofcourse,azealouspriestaswellasamaster-musicianandthisisevidentinthisGloriaforit isfartoolongtobeused liturgicallyandmusthave beenlargelyalabouroflove. Thesacredtextisexpanded byrepetitionsothatalmost everyphraseisaseparate pieceofmusic.Theseepisodesrangefromfullchorus andorchestradowntoa delicateduetbetweensopranoandoboe. Thechoralworkherewas verygoodbuttheorchestra sufferedagooddealfrom thepooracousticsofthehall andthetwosoloists,Molly

McGurkandIrisArcher, soundedverysubdued.

Thiswasnotentirelydue totheacousticsfor,Or Vaughan-Williams 'Benedicte',MollyMcGurkcame throughloudandclear,with beautifulintonation.

Twootherchoralworks, Brahm's'SongofDestiny' andParry's'BlestPairof Sirens'werebothsungmost beautifullybythechoirand thereweretwointeresting orchestralinterludes.Mozart'sincidentalmusicto 'Thamos,KingofEgypt'and GordonJacob'sSinfonietta. Themaininterestofthe Mozartisthatitwasthe springboard,touseEinstein'sphrase,for'The MagicFlute.' Themost familiarSinfoniettawas,by contrast,brightandlively andanexcellentcontrastto thesolemnBrahms,Vaughan-WilliamsandParry. THEBISHOPCALLS

HisLordshipwasdownon Tuesday,andcameouthere onWednesdayafternoonbeforeleavingforBroome.He leftushistent,whichis wonderfulandhasamosquitonetattachedtokeep outtheoddinsects. OnJuly2,HisLordship visitedtheMissiontoadministertheSacramentof Confirmation.Twenty-oneof thepeoplewereconfirmed, soitwasabigoccasion, Faithmadenewdressesfor

thewomenandwefound enoughwhiteshirtsforthe men. Thelittlechapelwas crowdedthateveningand thechildrensangforthe Benedictionandthehymn "ComeHolySpirit."Much toourdisappointment.the filmItookonthatdaywas acompleteblank.Wehad teapreparedforallthe peopleaftertheceremony.

BAPTISMANDFIRST HOLYCOMMUNION

..August15-Feastofthe Assumption.Twoofthe Stockboys,Rossumand Paddy(nowStephenand Patrick)werebaptsed. Sevenofthewomenreacie theirFirstHolyCommunion. ThechildrensanganEnglishMassandafterwardsthe AssumptaEstMaria.Breakfastwaspreparedonthe frontverandahofourhouse forFatherandthenine guests.

Thewindgatheredforce shortlyafterweassembled inthechapelandsoonthe airwasfilledwithreddust. Itwasratherdiscouraging toreturnlatertoourh:use andfindathickcoatinof dustoverallthefood.However,itwasnotreallyimportant.
