ThelateMgr.Nevinwas aprofessorofSt.Patrick's College,Manly,for 12 yearsandpresidentofthe Collegefor13years.In 1946hewasnamedparish priestofRockdale.
Mgr.NevinwasachaplaininWorldWarIand wasawardedtheCroizde Guerreavecpalmbythe FrenchGovernment.After beingwoundedatNeuve ChapelleinMay,1917,he lostalegandspentsome timeofhisconvalescence atLourdes.
HisEminenceCardinal Gilroypresidedatthe SolemnRequiemMass whichwascelebratedby Mgr,Nevin'snephew,Fr. J.Golden,S.J.

Whileleadersofnations ofthefreeworldtakepolitical,economicandmilitary actiononbehalfofthe peopleinthesecountries,we thepeoplecandosomething whichtheycouldthemselves lack-PRAY!

(1)Thepurposeofthismemorandumistourgethat otherreligiouspersonslikemonks,Brothersandnuns shouldbeexemptfromthetemporaryresidencetax.
(2)Weseektheirexemptionfromthetaxonthe broadgroundthatnopenaltybywayoftaxshouldbe imposedonthesepersonsastheyhavecometoand remainontheislandinordertodocharitable,social andphilanthropicwork.
(3)Thelargemajorityofthepeopleofthiscountry holdthatthepracticeofreligionisessentialtothe interestsandwelfareofsociety.Inpromotingthe practiceofreligionandofreligiouspracticestherefore, thesepersonperformfunctionsbeneficialtosocietyand totheState.
(4)Inadditiontolookingafterthespiritualwelfare, thesepersondevotethemselvestosocialandcharitable work,suchasschoolsforthedeafandblindhomesfor theaged,industrialcentres,orphanages,creches,refuge foruwantedorabandonedgirls,reformatoriesandfree dispensaries.
(5)Afairnumberofthesepersonsworkvoluntarily anddonotreceiveanysalaryorpay.

InsomedegreetheprogenitorsoftheBankofEngland, theWorshipfulCompanyof Goldsmithscanlookbackto the17thcenturywhencity merchantsfoundthegoldsmiths'vaultsweretheonly reallysaferepOSitoryfor theirmoney.Thegoldsmiths paidthemerchantsinterest andusedthefundsintheir caretomakeloans.Their receiptswereknownas goldsmiths'notesandwere theforerunnersofpaper currency. MANYsensethatearthlytreasureshavedeceivedthem orthatthereisamelancholyandhypocrisyaboutlife whichtheynevernoticedbefore.Thisisthepointfor manywheresanctitybegins.
SPIRITOF REVOLT
LETUSEXAMINEfourimportantpsychologicalsymptomsofmiddleage.Thefirstisoftenaspiritofrevolt. Itisnotopenbuthiddenbehindmorbid resignation.Thisissometimesapparent inawife'stoneofvoiceorthebegrudgingwayshedoesherwork.Somemen liveinvagueanger-constantlyirritatedbylife,Theyaresarcasticandbitter.The childrennowkavehomewhenevertheycanorseem toresenttheirparents.
Thereisatleastoneanswertothisfirstsymptom.It maybeintheunderstandingthatthisperiodisonlya changeinone'slife-notadecayanddisruption.A newadjustmentistakingplace.
Husbandandwifenowneedmainlytogetcloserto eachother.Thereisnoneedtoclingtomemories.but toliveandenjoythepresent.Buttheymustcourageouslydevelopanewimageoflifeforthemselves.
Thesecondsymptomofthisperiodisastrongemotionalism.Amanmaythinkhiscareerhasreachedits pinnacle.Heseesonlydecline.Awomanisrocked emotionallywiththeapparentlossofherphysical beautyandbelievesshewillnownolongerbeloved byherhusband.Thereisafeelingthatdaysofachievementareover.
Ananswerisingreaterconjugallove,forwhereit existsitdefiestimeandwrinkles.Couplesgroweven closertoeachotherthantheyaretotheirchildren. Womenshouldenterintomoreoutsideactivities.Men, too,canusetheirreasonandrealisetheyarenoton themarginoflife,butthattheirexperienceandwisdom makethemquiteindispensabletosociety.
Athirdsymptomisinstability.Itisoneofthemost disturbing.Middle-agers,likeadolescents,haveto adaptthemselvestoadifferentperiod.They,too,are oftenmomentarilyinsecureandconfused.They,too, needself-discovery.They,too,detectathousandlittle exasperationswhichwerenevernotedbefore.
Buttothismustbeaddedagreatdifference-the emotionsofmanymiddle-agersareoftendiscoloured withfatigueandweariness.Theygetinvolvedinbrutal andabsurddivorces.Asananswertothisproblem,a personmustlearnhowtogrow.Thegrowthofa personismainlyconcentratedinhissuccessfulinterpersonalrelationships.
UntilmiddleageonemayhavegivenhimselftolifebuthisOWNlife.Hemayhavebeenblindlyand instinctivelygenerous.Nowhemustdeliberatelygive himselftoothers.Thisisnoteasy,butitisindispensableforhappiness.

FINALLY,asymptomwhichoftenoccursatthisperiod oflifeisahypersexuality.Emotionshaverockedand cloudedthemind.Somearetemptedto takerefugeineroticedventure.Some discoverasensualitywhichtheynever knewexistedorneverunderstood. Somebecomecynical,violentandscandalous.Othersareauthoritarian,hypercritical,unfaithful.Stillothersresorttoferociousjealousy,cold despotismorcrueldivorce.Nothingseemstostop them.Honour,reputation,education,evenreligion, seemtobeofnqavail.
Thoughlifeatthisperiodisnotnormallyonthe ascendancy,theopportunitiesitofferswillbeinrelationshiptoone'sinteriorlife.Thedevelopmentofthis interiorlifeisthemainanswertothisperiod.Thereis need;notonlyforagivingofself,butaserenityof soulandanintelligentdevelopmentofspirituallife.
Everymiddle-agerespeciallyneedsasolidspiritual bookforshortdailyreading,andaretreateveryyear. Thefirewhichexistedintheeyesofayoungsterisnow replacedbyalightwhichillumineshismiddleage. Lifemustbelivedwiththeconvictionthatthisperiod isabeautiful,rich,andfruitfulasthosewhichprecededit.

Thisyearthedinnerwas anevenhappiereventfor W.A.thanusual,asforthe firsttimeW.A.weresuccessfulinwinningtheCarnivalandfeltveryproud whentheA.C.G.B.A.Shield waspresentedotheircaptain,MargaretHegarty,by theDiocesanChaplainofthe Y.C.W.,FatherO'Brien.

Hesufferscompulsiveeffectsarisingindependentlyandeveninspiteofhiswill,andinvoluntaryconductundersuchconditionsisnotsinful. Solongasanydegreeoffreedomofwillremains, onewhoreliesonGod'sgracewillfindhimself ablenottoconsenttoanysinfulinclinationsonhis part.Butabilitytoresisttemptationdoesnotmean abilitytoresistbeingindoctrinatedagainstone's willandbroughttoastateofcompleteirresponsibility. schoolteachersneatlydressedwiththeirmissalsintheir hands,butforthemostpart itwaslocalpopulation, manylittleremovedfrom theirprimitivestateand dressedonlyintheirgrass skirts.Tomysurprise,two priestsdistributedHoly Communionateachoftwo Masses. Thistremendouslysuccessfulmissionaryworkis maintainedbyastaffof threepriests,fivenunsand fourlay-missionaries.Two schools,ahospitalandthe stationitselfaresupported bythemissioncattle,piggeryandgeneralcrops.The lay-missionaryfarmerresponsibleforthisisreturningtoEuropeattheendthis yearafterfiveyearsmission work,andFatherNilles, S.V.D.,thepriestincharge anxiouslyseeksareplacement.

LEPROSY
OnMay26,Mr.RAOUL FOLEREAU,Presidentof theOrderofCharity,gave atalkattheItalo-African FoyerofRomeonthe "BattleAgainstLeprosy."
Drawingonhisexperienceofthirtyyears,Mr, Follereautoldhisaudience, whichincludedMr.Giardina,ItalianMinisterof Health,theMostReverend E.Verhille,BishopofRousset,andtheMostReverend I.Phakoe,BishopofLeribe, Basutoland,abouttheprogressthathasbeenmadein thecureofleprosyandin themannerofdealingwith thoseafflictedwiththe disease.
Thirtyyearsago,whenhe madehisfirstworldtourin thecauseofthosesuffering fromleprosy,helearned thattherewereabouttwelve millionpeoplesuffering fromthediseaseinthe world.Atpresentthereare 15,000,000,thegreaterpart ofwhomstillliveunder atrociousconditions.
In1930,Mr.Follereausaw somewhowerelivinginan abandonedcemeteryandhe sawotherswhowereliving underconditionsthatwere scarcelymuchbetter.There werethenaboutahundred thousandleperswhowere thebeneficiariesofChristian charityunderthecareof priestsandSisterswho dedicatedtheirlivestothat cause.
Theexcusethatmayhave beenallegedinformer timesforabandoningthose afflictedwithleprosybecauseofthehorrorthatthe diseasegaverisetoorbecauseofthefearofcontagion,hasnovalidityatall today.
Expertswhostudythe diseaseareinagreement thatthediseaseisonly mildlycontagiousandalso thatitiscurable.Infact 2,500,000patientshavebeen curedinthepastthirty years.Tocurethe12,500,000 andtoalsocurethosewho arefrightenedandwho
shudderatthethoughtof leprosyisataskofthe OrderofCharity.
