HOUSEKEEPING-AGreat ProfessionAsWellAsVocation
SOMEyearsagotherewasacampaignin Europebywomen'smagazinestolighten theworkforthemotherathome.They suggestedoneight-hourday,newhousehold budgets,moreplannedrecreation,andsoon. Theyfoundtheresults,however,verydisappointing.
Manywomendiscoveredthatintryingtoworkby theclocktheywerefrustratedandunhappy;husbands complainedthatfamilylifehadtakenonasadand impossiblerhythm.Thehouse,thefamily,work,play, weekdays,Sundayswereallover-organised.Onething thattheefficiencyexpertshadfailedtorealisewasthat housewiferywasnotanothertechnicaljob.
VOCATION OFSERVICE
TOAREALCHRISTIANWOMANhousekeepingisno nuisance-somethingtogetoutofthewayassoonas possible.Ahousewifeisnota servant.Housewiferyisagreat profession.Itrequiresasgreata competencyandtechniqueasdo manyoftheprofessions.Itcertainlydeservesasgreat,ifnotgreater,attentionthan mostofthereputedprofessions.
Thesuccessfulhousewifeisanintelligent,cultivated, broadmindedperson-onewhounderstandsthathousewiferyisavocationinwhichsherendersservicetoher husband,childrenandguestsoutoflovefarGod.And thisserviceinitselfhelpstoenrichher,interesther, fulfilher.
Housewiferyisaprofessionwhichneedsintuition, tact,gentleadaptationtotemperamentsandtheindividualneedsofafamily.Agoodhousewifemustknow howtocreateinherhomeafeelingofpeace,welcome andwell-being.Whensheachievesthisitisnotsomethingonecananalyse.Itisjustthere.True,technical qualitiesarenecessary,butthereareotherinnate qualitiesthatareevenmorenecessary.

GeorgesdeLaTour,ChardinandCezanne. Theysucceededwellinpresentingthecharmingspirit ofatruehome.Theysuccessfullyportrayedthesimple tenderness,spirituallightandpeaceofadwelling. Manyakitchenwoulddowelltohaveonitswallsa paintingofVermeerorChardin.Homeswouldbenefit fromthespiritwhichthepaintingsconvey.
Ahousewifethenmustnotmerelybeabletocook goodmeals,havecleanclothesandspotlesssurroundings.Shemustgofarbeyondthat-shemustbeableto createthatatmosphereofintimacy,ofwarmth,of closeness.Todothisshemustreallyenjoyherwork.

entrance,hasnottheneat precisionofSutherland-she justhappenstobeDonna Elvira,latelyarrivedfrom Burgos,bentonbloodymurder.Nootherartistinany roleandonanysetbegins toapproachSchwarzkopf's Eivira. Oftherest,soundperformancesratherthan superlativeweretheorder oftheday.Waechtersanga convincingDon,butIprefer theunusualinterpretationof Fischer-DiscauonD.G.G. ThepianoquartetoriginatedwithMozart,who wrotetwo,thesecond,inE FlatMa'f,r,beganthefirst concert.Writtenafteralong seriesofwonderfulpiano concertos,thequartetavoids thepitintowhichsomany laterquartetsfell-itnever evenapproachestheformof apianoconcerto.Itispure chambermusic.Itistrue thattheviolaandcelloparts arenotverydistinguished andsectionssoundrather likeaviolinsonata,but eventhatmakesforlucidity andgivesagoodbalanceof thecombinedstringsagainst themorepowerfulpiano. Theperformancewasmore thanflawless.OrnelloSantoliquid°madethepianosing wherealesserpianistwould havemadeittinkle.
TheSchumannandthe somewhatsimilar,though earlier,Weberweremore romanticbutstillverytuneful,reminiscentofSchubert. Theperformanceswereso lyricalandpoeticalthatthe technicaldeficienciesof bothcomposerswereoverlookedintothefloodof beauitfutsound.

ACCORDINGtoreportsreceivedinBangkok,Thailand,schoolchildrenhave beentakenfromLaosto HanoiandMoscowforcommunistindoctrination.
ThePathetLaohavesent childrentoHanoi,capitalof thecommunistregimein NorthVietnam.Fromthere thoselikelytobemoreapt studentsaresentontoMoscow.ParentsinPathet-Lao occupiedregionsfearthat morechildrenwillbetaken toHanoiandMoscowwhen theschoolyearendsthis month.
AgfarbackaslastDecember,youthsandgirls who-evacuatedVientiane withthetroopsofCapt.Cong Le(nowageneral)were askedtogotoHanoiand Moscow.(GeneralCongLe's forcejoinedthePathetLao andtheyhavebeenoperatingtogethersince.)Hanoiis apparentlyprovidingaspecialcommunistindoctrinationcentreforLaotianboys andgirlswhileMoscowwill trainthosepickedasfuture leadersofacommunistLaos.

FIRSTRELIGIOUSHOUSE SINCEREFORMATION
ONJune3,1961,theSwedishgovernmentgaveitsapprovaltotheofficialerection ofaCarmeliteconventnear Halsingborg,inSweden.
Whenthelawofreligious freedomcameintoforceon January1,1952,aspecial clausewasinsertedtoregulatetheopeningofmonasteriesandconvents,which hadhithertobeenforbidden inthecountry.Itstipulated thatineveryinstancea specialapplicationshould bemadetothegovernment whichwoulddecidewhether thereisanyneedforsuchan institution.Variousrules, suchasastipulatedminimumageof25beforefinal vowsandinspectionbygovernmentofficialswereincludedinthelegislationand parliamentreservedthe righttobeheardwhenuse wasmadeforthefirsttime ofthesenewregulations.
TheCarmelitenunshave hadaprovisionalhousein Swedenforafewyearsnow. Theirapplicationforpermissiontoerectaconvent onamorepermanentbasis hadathornywaythrough
variousgovernmentalinstancesbeforetheMinister ofEcclesiasticalAffairsdecidedtogivehisapproval.
Thenthelawcommitteeof theparliamentgavetheir opinion,whichwaspartly negative,astheyinsistedon aSwedishmajorityamong thenunsattheverybeginning.Thisamountedtoa refusalassixnunsareBelgiansandonlytwoSwedish.
Intheparliamentitself, thedebatesetoffastormof anti-Catholicprejudice. Overahundredmembers votedagainsthavingaconvent.TheUpperHouseinsistedonaSwedishmajority fromtheoutset,butthe LowerChambertookamore lenientviewbyanarrow margin.
Thegovernmenthasnow giventhedesiredpermission,statingthattheytake itforgrantedthattherewill beaSwedishmajoritywithinaperiodof'someyears."
Thelastreligioushousein Sweden,theMotherhouseof theBrigittinenunsatVadstena,wassuppressedbythe governmentin1595.Since thelastcentury,various nunsandrealeReligious havebeenactiveinthe country,butuptillnowno conventormonasterywas canonicallyerected.

WEhavedescribed how,intheMass saidatnightin thecatacombsofthirdcenturyRome,thecatechumens(thosenotyet baptised)departedbefore thesacrificial'partofthe Massbeganwiththe Offertory.
Thepartnowtakeninthe Massbythepeoplewhoremainismorepassive:the celebrantoffersthesolemn prayerinthenameofall.
Thosestandingaroundthe celebrantinterject,itistrue, oneortworepliesinthe dialoguewithwhichitopens andasolemn"Amen"atits close,buttheyofferthesacrificeinsilence.Thegreat Eucharisticprayerisa priestlyprayer,anditwas said,thenasnow,bythe celebrant(inthiscasethe bishop)inthenameofall

TheC.B.C.A3hockey team,struggledtokeepits placeinthefinalfour,sufferedasetbackonSaturday whenitwasdefeated2-1by adeterminedOldWesley teamatNashOval. Thedefeatendedasuccessfulwinningrunbythe C.B.C.sideandmeantthat victoriesinthefinaltwo matchesofthequalifying roundsarealmostessential.
Itwasagameinwhich bothteamsplayedhard,fast hockeybutfailedtomake themostofscoringopportunities.Inthefirsthalf, playwasevenwithC.B.C. slightlyontopbutneither teambeingabletoscore. Bothteamshadchancesto goalbutfailedtocapitaliseonthem.
Earlyinthesecondhalf OldWesleyopenedthescoringwithawell-earnedgoal andlaterscoredasecond -C.B.C.repliedbutcould notmanageasecondgoal totiethematch.
