OnSunday,August6,nearly100ex-pupils ofChristianBrothers'HighSchool,Highgate, celebratedthesilverjubileeoftheir"Alma Mater"byjoiningintheMasscelebratedby asenioroldboyoftheschool,Rev.Fr.Crispin Brown,O.F.M.
DuringtheMasscelebratedatSacredHeart Church,Highgate,another oldboypriest,Rev.Dr.P. Quinn,deliveredaninspiringsermonoutliningthe historyandplaceofCatholic schoolsinthefieldofeducationinAustralia.
Sincetheturnofthecentury,hesaid,tremendous sacrificeshadbeenmadeby AustralianCatholicparents inorderthattheirchildren shouldreceiveatrulyChristianeducation.Itisthe responsibilityofthosechildren,hecontinued,tojustify thesesacrificesbypractising thefundamentalsimparted tothematschoolintheir everydayadultlives.
AfterMass,atastefully preparedbreakfastwas servedinthequadrangleof theschool,whichwasgaily decoratedwithbuntingin theschoolcoloursofblue andgold,withthePapaland nationalflagsinprominence andtheschoolpennantat themasthead.
Inproposingthetoastto theschool,Mr.J.Farrell citedexamplesofboyseducatedattheschoolwhohave becomeexemplaryinvariouswalksoflife.
Inrespondingtotheschool toastandproposingatoast totheoldboys,Rev.Brother H.D.Fogartyexpresseddisappointmentinthelackof numberstakinganinterest inthejubileecelebrations.
Hefelt,however,thatthe spiritofthosewhohaveattendedthemeetingsand functionsheldwasofsterlingcharacter.
Duringhisresponse,Mr. G.Smithemphasisedthe importanceofthememorial fundestablishedtoerecta fittingmemorialtocommemorateoldboyswhogave
theirlivesindefenceof freedom.

WHENagreatcrowdfollowed OurLordtomakeHimKing,he fledintothemountainsalone.He knewthe#feelingswereunstable, andthattheonlyreasonthey wantedHimasKingwasbecause Hegavethembread.Onanother occasion,Herefusedtobepleased withthosewhoflockedtoHimbecause"Heknewwhat wasinman."WhenPeterdeclaredthathewasreadyto dieforHim,theDivineMastertoldhimthatthatvery nighthewoulddenyHimthreetimes.Nowheredoes genuinereligionputapremiumonsuddenexuberance offeeling,onone-nightconversions,oronatemporary ecstasy.Saintsarenevercanoniseduntiltheyaredead.

Religionprobablysuffersmorefrommoodsthandoes romanticlove.AministerinWashingtononChristmas DA,afewyearsagosaidtohiscongregation:"Iwill seeyouatEaster."Hemeantthattheirreligioussentimentswereseasonal,andtoofaraparttobringany logicalsideofsexeducation, isquitemisguided.Anyone withknowledgeofhuman naturewillknowthatour youngpeoplewillthusbe temptedtoexperiencefor themselveswhattheyhave learned.Recentstatistics concerningthebehaviourof veryyoungboysandgirls aresufficientlystartlingto givepausetothosewhoimaginethatsucheducation insexmatterswillforewarn youthagainstthedangersof uncleanliving.
"Ashavesaidbefore thefrequentportrayalofvio leneandcrimeproducea softening-upoftheattitude towardsevil-doingwhich mustbedisastrousforthe individualandforthefamilyandthenation.

Theastronomerdoesnotgiveuphissciencebecause hedoesnotfindanewplaneteveryday:thepoetdoes notgiveuphispoetrybecausehecannotwritebrilliant verseseveryday.Buttheidealofscienceandtheideal ofpoetryremain.Sovirtue,faithandtheabiding resolvetosaveone'ssoulremainsevenwhenonedoes not"feel"likesavingone'ssoul.Idealsmustneverbe lefttothemercyofthestomachortheglands.They resideinthewill.HeacetheDivineTruthremindsus: "Hewhoperseveresuntotheendwillbesaved."

TheEphesustraditionis referredtobySt.EpiphaniusofSalamisasexisting amongaChristiangroup calledtheAgapetaiinthe year400A.D.Itisthought tobebasedonindications intheActsoftheApostles thatSt.John-andthereforeMarywithhim-may havedepartedfromJerusalemandevenfromtheHoly LandatthetimeofthepersecutionledbySaul.
ItisalsogenerallyacceptedthatSt.Johnlivedin hislastyearsanddiedat Ephesus,thenthecapital cityofAsiaMinorandthe chiefoftheSevenChurches addressedinhisApocalypse. In1905hissuccessor,St. PiusX,sentencouragement to"thevaliantsearchersfor thetomboftheBlessed Virgin"atEphesus.Mary's tombhadbeendescribedby theGermanvisionaryasa cavelocatedinthemountainsnearthehouseatthe endofaWayoftheCross with12stations.Thestigmatic,whodiedin1824,is reportedassayingshe thought"itwillonedaycome tolight."
World-wideinterestin PanayaKapuluwasaroused followingtheproclamation ofthedogmaoftheAssumptionbyPopePiusXIIin 1950.In1951theTurkish governmentbuiltaroadup tothehithertoinaccessible siteandtheruinedbuilding wasrestored.OnAugust19, 1951,itwasconsecratedas aCatholicchurchwiththe specialprivilegesandindulgencesattachedtoHoly places.

Aprominentcolumnist, KiyokiMurata,writingin theinfluentialJapanTimes, tookaseriousviewofthe generalreligiousapathybecauseoftherenewedeffortsofcommunismtoinfiltratethemindofthisnation'syouth.

Suchwasthereplygiven toHisHolinessPopeLeo XIII,byMotherMaryofthe HeartofJesus,neeEuphrasieBarbier,duringan audiencewhichshehadwith theHolyFatherin1888. Frenchbybirth,anda memberofaCongregation establishedatCuvesfor Missionarywork,Euphrasie Barbier,thenknownas SisterMarie,althoughonly twenty-twoyearsofageat thetime,wassentwitha companionin1851tomake afoundationinLondon. Thiswasanenterprisenot unattendedbyriskand danger,foratthattimesectarianbitternesswasatits heightinEngland.AntiCatholicmeetingsandprocessionswereorganisedand invariouspublicationsreligiousweretheobjectof ridicule,sothattheSisters werecompelledtowearseculardresstoconcealtheir identity.
WORKINLONDON
ThusitwastoAhostile LondonthatthetwoFrench Sisterscame. However, conditionsslowlyimproved. andthefollowingyearthey werejoinedbytheremainderoftheCuvesCommunity.ThehouseinFrance wasclosedandthename oftheCongregationchanged. Theynowbecameknownas SistersofCompassion.Eventually,theSistersplucked upcouragetoappearintheir habitinpublic-thefirstreligioustodososincethe Reformation.Itisrelated:

Itwasadifficulttimefor theSisterswholivedinextremepoverty.AttherequestoftheOratorianFatherstheytookoverthemanagementofa"ragged school"-thetermusedin thosedaysforaschoolin theslumarea-inRose Street,andlaterinDtume's Passage,wherenearlyone thousandboysandgirls wereunderthecareofthe Fathers.Theundertaking wasanextremelydifficult oneandseemedwell-nigh impossible.
NorwastheSister'swork confinedtotheschool;as timewentontheybecame moreandmoreabsorbedin theparochialactivitiesof theOratory,forweread howtheyundertookworkroomsforgirlsanddirected nightschoolsforthosechildrenwhoduringtheday wereoccupiedinsweeping thestreetsandinselling flowers,fruitandcress.As onemightexpect,theSi.terninfluencefoundits wayintothehomesoftheir pupils.
Inadditiontotheseapostolicworks,theSistersstudiedfortheEnglishTeachers'Certificatequalifying forthisattheTrainingCollegeconductedbytheSis-
tersofNotreDameatLiverpool.
1861ANEWCONGREGATION
However,theCongregation hadbecomesoengrossedin theworksoftheOratory thatItwasdecidedtoabandontheoriginalobjectfor whichtheOrderhadbeen established-tosendsubjectstotheforeignmissioes. SisterMarie,thenFirstAssistantandNoviceMistress, couldnotforgetherspecific motiveinenteringreligious lifeandwasunabletoresignherselftothechange. Theopportunityoffollowing hervocationcameinMay. 1861,whenMaristFathers cametoEnglandinquest ofSisterstohelpwith schoolsandothergood worksintheirmissionfields ofthePacific.FatherFaber,whowasSuperiorof theOratoryatthetime,and SisterMarie'sSuperiors lookeduponthisrequestas arevelationofthedesigns ofProvidenceuponthe youngreligious,withtheresultthataformalpetition wassenttotheHolySee forachangeofobedience. Thishavingbeengranted therewasnolongeranyobstacletoSisterMarie'sdeparture,andonAugust12, withayoungEnglishPostulantascompanion,sheset outforLyons,whereonthe FeastoftheAssumptionof OurLadytheytookuptheir residenceinasmallapartmentbelongingtothe MaristFathersatNo.4 MountSt.Bartholomew.But toSisterMarie'sdisappointmentshelearnedthatasyet herambitiontogoingto theforeignmissionswas nottoberealised,sincethe GeneraloftheMaristOrder wishedhertoestablishunderhisdirectionaninstitute inwhichSisterswouldbe preparedfortheworkwhich heldsuchanattractionfor her. Thuscameintoexistence theCongregationofOur LadyoftheMissions. Beforelongseveralyoung girlscameaskingadmission, anditwasnecessaryto movetoalargerresidence, thisbeingfoundatNo.7 RueCleberg.HeretheNovitiatewascanonicallyerectedonChrismasDay,1861, andSisterMarie,henceforth knownasMotherMaryof theSacredHeartofJesus, andherEnglishcompanion, asSisterM.St.Wilfred, receivedthehabitofthe newCongregation.
FIRSTDEPARTURE FORTHEMISSIONS
By1863therewerefourteenNovicesandPostulants receivingsolidformation fromtheyoungFoundress, whowasthenonly33years ofage.
Atlength,inOctober1864, fouryoungSisters,recently professed,werereadyfor departurefoNewZealand. Theymadethevoyagein thedecrepitsailingship "WalterHood"whichmust havebeenheldtogetherbeneaththembytheprayers oftheSisters,foritfounderedandwaslostonits nestvoyage.OnFebruary 26.1865,theyarrivedat Napier,NewZealand,there toestablishthefirstmissionconventoftheCongregation.Afterbeingwarmly welcomedbyFatherForest, S.M.,ParishPriestofNapier, andhisparishioners,they tookuptheirresidencein theConventpreparedfor themonBluffHill,abeauti-
fulsite'inthispleasantcity. Soonaschoolandaworkroomwereestablished.Later aboardingschoolforsenior Maorigirlswasopened,this beingtransferredtoGreenmeadowsin1930.
AttherequestoftheMaristFathers,MotherMary nowpreparedtosendmissionariestoSydney,Australia,threeSistersarriving thereonMarch14,1867.For variousreasons,thismission wasclosedtwoyearslater.

Animportanthistorical eventintheannalsofthe Congregationwasthefirst GeneralChapterheldin 1867,atwhichMotherMary oftheHeartofJesuswas electedSuperiorGeneral. Stillmoreimportantwasthe approvalgiventotheCongregationbythebestowal oftheBriefofPraiseby HisHoliness,PopePiusIX, onJune9,1869.
Inthemeantime,the missionofNapierwasflourishingandtheneedforsimilarfoundationsinNewZealandbecameevident.Inresponsetoappealsfromthe respectiveParishPriests, houses-wereestablishedin Christchurchin1868andin Nelsonin1871.

Asin1872politicaland religiouscon,iitionsinFrance wereenteringonamore settledphase,MotherMary oftheHeartofJesusdecidedtomakeherlongpromisedvisittoNewZealand. Disregardingill-healthand chronicseasickness,the Foundressmadeherjourney aroundtheworld,andafter astormypassage,finally reachedDunedinonChristmasDay,1872.
TheConventsinChristchurch,NapierandNelson werevisitedandinherfarsightedwisdomtheFoundressarrangedforthecanonicalerectionoftheNovitiateat.Christchurch.
InDecember,1876,atthe requestofM.L'AbbeA. Coulombafoundationwas madeatArmentieres,where therewasample-scopefor apostoliczeal.
In1877anothervisitto RomegaveMotherMary oftheHeartofJesusthe privilegeofasecondaudiencewiththesaintlyPope, PitsIX,andafewmonths later,whilestillinthe EternalCity,shehadthe longed-forjoyofreceiving theapprobationofherConstitutions.
InOctoberofthatsame yearthesecondGeneral Chapterwasconvened,and inspiteofentreatiestobe relievedofherofficeas headoftheCongregation, theFoundresssvasunanimouslyandunhesitatingly re-electedasSuperiorGeneral.
Afterthevisitationofthe housesinEuropehereighth andlastvisittoRomewas undertakenforthepurpose ofsubmittingtotheCongregationofPropagandaareportofhertwelvefoundationsandtoseekthefinal approbationoftheConstitutions.Althoughshewas favourablyreceived,thiswas notgranteduntil1890.It wasatthistimethatinvirtueofadecreeofMarch 1,1888,theSuperiorGeneraloftheHermitsofSt. Augustineaffiliatedtohis Order,theCongregationof theDaughtersofOurLady oftheMissions,givingthem ashareinalltheprivilegesofhisgreatreligious family,theonlycondition beingthewearingbythem oftheleatherncinctureof St.Augustine.
BeforeleavingtheEternalCity,MotherMarywas receivedinaudiencebythe HolyFather.Thenitwas thatthegreatPopeLeo XIII,tookherhandand askedhertolabourforthe conversionofEngland.
ReturningtoLyons,she madepreparationsforthe thirdGeneralChaagerofthe Congregation,heldinChristmasDay,1888,whichresultedinherre-electionas SuperiorGeneral.
Thenextfoundation,and thelastinthelifeofthe Foundress,wasmadeat, Opotiki,NewZealand,in August,1890. Closelyfollowingthisevent,camethe approbationbyRomeofthe Ceremonialinfull.Thu, endedanotherdecade.
Itwasindeedfittingthat. surroundedbyloyalmembersofareligiousfamily,this zealousapostleandloverof Englandshouldterminate herdevotedmissionarylife inthelandfortheconversionofwhichshehadpromisedtolabour. ShediedatSp.m.on January8,1893.

HER Consequentuponthedeath oftheFoundressthefifth GeneralChapterwasconvoked,atwhichReverend MotherMaryoftheHoly Rosarywasunanimously electedSuperiorGeneral.
Duringtheremaining yearsofthecenturyfurther foundationsweremadein Switzerland,NewZealand, Australia,CanadaandIndia. TheexpulsionofReligious fromFranceresultedinthe closingofallConventsin thatcountry,sothatitwas necessarytotransferthe MotherHouseandNovitiatetoDeal,England,in 1901.
Teworkofexpansion continuedandfrom19011911,moremissionswere foundedinCanada,Australia, andNewZealand.
Animportanteventinthe historyoftheCongregation wasthefinalapprobation oftheConstitutionsbySt. PiusXinJuly,1906.
AttheGeneralChapter heldin1912Reverend MotherMarySt.Pacome waselectedSuperiorGeneralandre-electedin1919. Herfirsttermofofficeincludedthecriticalyearsof thefirstworldwar.
Withthesteadygrowthof theCongregationfurther foundationsweremadein thosecountriesinwhichmissionshadalreadybeenestablished,andin1920the Sistershadthehappinessof re-opening theformer MotherHouseinLyons, LaterontheNovitiatewas re-establishedthere,and otherConventsopenedat Toulon,St.Rambertand Charenton.

Amajoreventwithinthe nexttenyearswasthe changeoftheMotherHouse andNovitiatefromDealto Hastings.
In1924thefirstfoundationinIndo-Chinawasmade atPhatDiem,andlateron otherhouseswereopened
atil'hanhHoa,Langsonand Hanoi. In1925,thetwelfthGeneralChaptertookplace whenReverendMotherM. St.Basilwaselectedfourth SuperiorGeneral.Shewas re-electedatthethirteenth GeneralChapterheldin 1932. ThefifthSuperiorGeneral, ReverendMotherM.St. Denis,waselectedtooffice attheGeneralChapterof 1938,anditwasshewho guidedtheCongregationduringthedifficultrearsof thesecondworldwar.
ReverendMotherM.DominicSavio,electedSuperior Generalin1954,wasreelectedattheseventeenth GeneralChapter.heldin 1960. IntheDioceseofQuiNhon(SouthVietnam)there were26,850baptismsfrom September1,1959toSeptember1,1960andthisextraordinaryconvertmovementislikelytocontinue sincethereareatpresent 70,995Catechumensunder instruction.Totalpopulation ofthedioceseis2.1385.000.
Inthepastfouryears therewere63,000converts inthedioceseand60 churchesandfivesecondary schoolswereconstructed. TotalCatholicpopulationis 169,775.
Theastonishingnumberof convertsisduetothebreath oftheHolySpiritwho breatheswhereHewill.
Itistobgnotedthat theseconversionsaretaking placeinaregionthatwas fortenyearsundercommunistcontrol.Thesepeople whoareaskingforBaptism weresubjectedtointense propagandaandtheysufferedattimesinbodyand soul.

Inastatementissuedon June1st,theMostReverend JosephKiwanuka,ArchbishopofUganda,warns Catholicsagainstcommunist literaturethatisbeingadvertisedinUganda.
