ThisisMissMason'sfirst visittoPerth.Duringthe pastthreeyearsasnational presidentshehasspent sometimeinallStatesin anefforttoobtainabetter understandingofthecurrent problemsfacinggirlsindifferentpartsofAustraliaand anappreciationofwhat.actiontheY.C.W.shouldbe takingasamovementofthe Churchinthelivesof youngwomen.
Patwillbeoneofthe delegatestotheInternationalCouncil,whichwillbe heldinBrazilinNovember thisyear.Twolaydelegatesandachaplainwill representAustraliaatthe Council,whichmeetsevery fouryearsindifferentparts oftheworld.Over80other countrieswillberepresented.
NextweekendPatwillreturntoMelbourne,andthen goontoHobarttopreside attheAustralianNational Councilmeeting.Delegates willattendfromasfarnorth asTownsvilleandasfar westasBunbury.
AtHobart,Patsaid,alot oftimewillbegivento thestudyofapaperdrawn uponthepreparationbeing madebygirlsformarriage. Shesaidthatithadbeen foundfromenquiriesmade alloverAustraliathatvery
fewgirlsaremakingreally seriouspreparationforthe sacramentandvocationof marriage.Thepurposeof thestudywillbetotryand discoverwhatactioncanbe takenbyallmembersof theMovementtohelpgirls prepareforChristianmarriage.
AnothermattertobeconsideredattheNationalCouncilwouldbetheresultsof therecentcampaignon work.Particularattention willbegiventoproblems arisingfromthepresentunemploymentcrisis.Already girlshavefoundnewforms ofactiontotakeinthis field.

AnotherproblemthatconcernedtheY.C.W.,Patsaid, wasthenumberofgirlsin countrytownswhowere forcedtoleavetheirhomes toseekworkinthecity. Ithadbeenfoundthatmany ofthesegirlswereunpreparedforlifeintheirnew surroundingswithoutthe helpandguidanceoftheir parents.Oftentheyface problemsofaccommodation, gettingajob,andmaking newfriends.Itisavery realresponsibilityofthe Y.C.W.inlargercitiestodo alltheycantohelpthese girls.

Onlyninepriests-from the30whoenrolled-canbe accommodatedinthefivedaycourseforMinistersof Religion,whichwillcommenceatClaremontTeachers'CollegeonMonday, July10. ASECRETdocumentwithinstructionsto Communistpartyleadershasbeen revealedinBolivia.Itwasissuedtothe membersofthecountry'sCommunistparty priortotheunsuccessfulattempttooverthrowthegovernmentearlyinJune.

Thedocumentwasdeliveredtopartyleadersasearly asMay15inpreparationfortherevoltinJunewhich wastooverthrowthegovernmentofBolivianPresident VictorPazEstenssoro.Therevoltwasquelledwhen thePresidentdeclaredastateofsiege.
Intheinstructionsfortherevolt,thefirststageof the"Churchliquidation"sectionwastobeattainedby exaltingthe"patriotismofBolivianpriestsforthe purposeofpittingthemagainstforeignpriests,the agentsofFrancoistfascism."
ThegovernmentofthePresidentwasstatedinthese instructionstohavebeendelivered"intothehandsof Yankeeimperialism."
Withthecrushingoftherevoltandthearrestof40 Redleaders,includingtopofficialsofthetinmines union,theminersoftin-richBolivia,backedbythe FederationofUniversityStudents,launchedastrike whichwastocostabout£38imillion.
ThePresidentthreatenedtoresignunlessmore moderatedemandsweremadeonthegovernment. SomeofthedemandsincludedthereleaSeofthe arrestedRedleaders,fullwagesforthetimespenton strikeandfreegovernmentprovisioningofstoresin miningareaswhosesupplieshadbeendepletedbythe strike.
IfthePresidenthadresigned,thiswouldhaveleft thegovernmentinthehandsofJuanLechin,theVicePresident,whoisalsoheadofthecommunist-dominated labourmovement.
Withhisthreatofresignation,governmentmembers backedthePresident.AninvestigationrevealedinfluencefromFidelCastroofCuba,andthecharge d'affairesoftheCubanembassywasexpelledbecause ofhisinvolvementinthecommunistrevolt.
Thechargeagainsttheofficialwasthathedistributed moneyandpropagandamaterialtotheRedsandpermittedtheuseoftheembassyasa"headquartersfor communistagitation."
Thesecretinstructionsalsodemandedthealignment ofBoliviawiththeSocialistRenublicofCubaunderthe directionoftheUnionofSovietSocialistRepublics. Alorg,withthis,itcalledfortheexportofBoliviantin totheSovietUnionandthecreationofaBolivianbase fortheencouragementofReduprisingsinneighbouring countries.
Inthefaceofoppositiontothestrike,Redleaders calleditoff.TheyalsostoppedattackingthePiusXII radiostation,whichrefusedtobroadcaststrikepropaganda.TheradiostationhadbeendefendedbyCatholic minersofthetownofSigloXX.Theywerejoinedby othersfromneighbouringtownswhenacallwentout forassistance.
THEdisputewhichhasbeenraginginthenorthern'WienareavariouslycalledSouth TyrolorAltoAdigehastakenanewtwist.There,overrecentyears,German-speaking inhabitantshaveaccusedthegoverningItalian-speakingsectionoftheregionthattherehas beendiscriminationagainstthem.FormerlyAustrian,theregionwascededtoItalyin1919.

Inrecentmonthsmuch efforthasbeenputintothe formationofaCatholic ScoutGuildforthePerth Archdiocese.Theneedfor suchaGuildhasbeenfelt formanyyears.Thepurpose oftheCatholicScoutGuild (C.S.G.)couldbebrieflyset outasfollows.
Primarily,itisintended tohelpCatholicScoutsto derivethegreatestspiritual benefitfromtheirScout training.Itwillassistthe BoyScoutsAssociationto developtheScoutMovement inCatholiccircles,andwill helptoenlistsuitableCatholicmenasScoutmastersfor Catholic-sponsoredGroups.
Onthemoretechnical side,andundertheguidance oftheDiocesanScoutChaplain,theKi-RoSchemeof ReligiousTrainingforCatholicScoutersandScoutswilt beabigpartofitswork.
