ThepropertyiiiAberdeen St.,alargebrickhouse,was purchasedandfurnished withmoneyreceivedfrom theStateGovernment (£5,000grant),thelotte:iesCommission(£8,000and withmoneyfromvarious generousdonors.Inall,it isestimatedthatabout (.C.22,000)hasbeenspent ontheproject.

attendedtheopening,His Gracesaid:"Itwasonly alittleoverfiveyears sincetheDaughtersofCharityarrivedinourmidst bringingwiththemthe splendidtraditionsthat characterisedtheirworkin allContinents.Tothelarge majorityofthepeoplehere thisSisterhoodwasscarcelyknown.Fewhadactuallymetorevenseena DaughterofCharity.Today, however,theirnameisa householdwordinthemetropolitanarea-andindeed throughouttheState.The distinctivehead-dresshas becomeafamiliarsightin thestreetsofthecityand suburbs.
Theycommencedina humblewayintemporary accommodationinMt.Lawley.Withinashorttime theyacquiredan11-acre propertyontheSwanRiver atGuildfordwheretheyarrangedtoaccommodate chronicallyillladiesintheir temporaryhospice.Theaccommodationhasbecomealtogetherinadequateandthey havenowplanneda100bed buildingwhenitispassible togetthenecessaryloan frombankorinsurancecompany.

Buttheirworkextends beyond.thecareofthe chronicallyill.Theyfollow thesickpoorintotheir homesandcareforthem thereaslhisdistrictofWest Perthhasexperienced.And notonlythat,buttheyrealisedfromthebeginningthat somethingshouldbedone bywayofprovidingmeals fortheundernourishedand destitute.Thatispa.tof theircharitableworkin everycityinwhichthey areestablished.Andsoit wasthatdePaulCentrein FitzgeraldStreetwasestablished.Thatverynecessary SocialServiceissowell knownandsohighlyappreciatedthatitneedslittle comment.Sufficeittosay, however,thatinlessthan twoyea.;(sinceitcameintobeing)100,000freemeals havebeandistributedtothe indigent.Theworkofthe Sisterswasrenderedless onerousbytheextraordinary co-operationofallsections oftheCommunitywhoformedanenthusiasticanddynamiccommitteeembracing

Fr.McCormackarrivedin AustraliafromIrelandin November,1911andhisfirst appointmentwastothe BoulderParish.
Hespentashorttimeat ColliebeforebeingtransferredtoBusseltonwhere heworkedforabout30 years.
Fr.McCormackwasParishPriestatMidlandJunctionbeforecomingtoClaremontin1944.
Fr.McCormack'ssister wasSisterFrancisofthe St.Joseph'sSacredHeart OrderintheSouthPerth community,whereshedied abouttwoyearsagoafter spendingmostofherreligiouslifeinthisState. Hestillhasan89-yearoldbrotherlivinginIreland.
thoseofvariousbeliefs.Tr, themembersofthatCommittee-toMonsignorSullivanwhohasbeensohelpfulandsympatheticandencouraging-totheladies whohelpvoluntarilyweek afterweekatdePaulCentre-toallotherswhohave co-operatedinthishighly charitablework,Itakeadvantageofthisopportunity, onbehalfoftheDaughters ofCharity,ofexpressing theirsentimentsofundying gratitudeandprofoundappreciation.
ThatsameCommitteehas nowhelpedtheDaughters ofCharitytoimplementanotherSocialServicewhich theyhaveambitionedever sincetheycametoPerth (aservicealsofamiliarto theSisterhoodinother cities)viz.tohelpthehomeless,friendlessandunfortunatefemalewhosestory ispitifullywellknownparticularlytoourMagistratesandPoliceOffice:s: thefemalewhothroughvariouscircumstancesfindsherselfdestitute,andwithnowheretosleep.Atimely helpinghandwilloftensave herfromcompleteruin.
ThisCentreisanattempt tohelpsolvethissocial
problem.Ithasaccommodationfor12apartfromthe staff.Itisnotjustanotherinstitution.Itisa wellequippedhomewitha warmhomelyatmosphere, wherethoseinneedwillbe madewelcomeandwillbe madecomfortable.
IcongratulatetheDaughtersofCharityontheir zeal,charityandinitiative inundertakingthisvery necessarysocialservice.The communityowesthemadeep debtofgratitudefortheir selflessandefficientservice tothepooranddestitute.
TheEnglishhisto:ien Gibbon,whowasanything butwell-disposedtowards Christianityplacedthezeal andcharityoftheearly Christiansamongstthemain causesforthespreadof Christianity.TheDaughtersofCharityhadgrasped thatspiritandcouragethat madepatricianladiestake intotheirhomesandnurse backtolifephysicallyobjectionableslavesbecause theysawinthoseslaves theirbrothersinChrist.
CHARITYOFCHRIST Thezealoftheearly Christiansisnotdead.It livesintheheartofevery DaughterofCharitywho
spendsherself,andisspent, sothatshecanb:ingspiritualandcorporalcomfortto thoseinneed. Shehas heededandputsintopractice,theappealoftheDivine MasterWhomsheserves "Asoftenasyoudiditto oneofthesemyleastbrethren.youdidittoMe"(Matt. 25.40). SocialServiceis onlyamodernnameforan ancientfact-afactasold asChristianity.IntheSiste:hoodknownasthe DaughtersofCharityithas indeedflourishedasithas notdoneinanyotherorganisation."

OnSunday,July2,the annualcollectionforPeter's Pencewillbetakenupinall parishes.Thisannualcollectionisusedforthepurposeofassistinginthemany charitableworkswhichthe HolySeeinstitutesand maintainsthroughoutthe world.
Duringthenightsimmediatelyprior
Itisconsideredofnationalinterestthatafull andaccurateresponsebereceivedfromthepublic
Becauseofconfusioncausedincensusresultsin previousyearsoverwhatCatholicsshouldcall themselves,irrespectiveofwhatothersmayterm us,theBishopsofAustraliaconsideredthequestion duringtheirannualmeetinginJanuary.
ItwasdecidedthatallCatholicsshouldusethe terns"CATHOLIC"andNOT"RomanCatholic"on theofficialcensusform.Thiswillbeinthesection onreligion,whichistheonlynon-compulsory questioninthecensus.
HisGracetheArchbishoprequeststhatallCatholicpeopleoftheDioceseusethetermCatholic, whichisthecorrectone,sothattherewillbe uniformitythroughoutAustralia.

TheAprilrulingwas promisedlastJuly26(1960), whentheRitescongregation issueditsnewrubricsfor theRomanBreviaryand Missal.Theseinvolvedmajor changesinthecalendarof thewholeLatinRiteChurch.
Thenewcalendar,which wentintoeffectlastJanuary 1,simplifiedtheclassificationsoffeastdaysandeliminatedsomefeastsaltogether. Medievalwriterswrote fabulousaccountsabout themastocastdoubton theirveryexistence.Thus St.Georgewasthedragonslayer;St.Christoperwas18 feettall.Exceptthatthere wasamartyrnamedChristopherinearlyChristian times,nothingcertainis knownabouthim.St. Christoper'sDayfallson July25,whichisthefeast ofSt.JamestheGreater. TheApostle'sfeastisa secondclassone,andthere isonlyacommemorationof St.Christopherinthenew calendar-thesamesituation thatexistedbeforelast year'schanges.
St.George,thepatronof Englandandprotectorof soldiers,comesdownin folkloreasadragon-slayer. ButscholarsholdthatdeFoo..themythsthathave developed,historicalevidencepointstothefactthat therewasarealSt.George, whowasmartyredinPalestine,probablybeforethe timeofConstantine.
TheHolySeeinitsnew calendareliminatedthefeast ofSt.George-traditionally celebratedonApril23-reducingittoacommemoration.
Thesametreatmentwas giventotheoldfeastsof twoothersoftheFourteen HolyHelpers-St.Cyriacus, onAugust8,andSt.Eustaee, September20.
Thefeastsofall14were popularlycelebratedright throughtheMiddleAges andearlyRenaissance,and atleastone-St.Blaise's Day,onFebruary3-survivedinpopularitytothe presentday.The14include St.MargaretandSt.CatherineofAlexandria,twoof the"voices"heardbySt. JoanofArc;St.Denis, patronofParis;St.Elmo (Erasmus);St.GilesandSt. Barbara.
Mostofthe14existedin fact.Somehistorians,however.haveseriousdoubts abouttheexistenceofboth St.BarbaraandSt.CatherineofAlexandria. ButSt.Catherine'sDayis theonlyoneofthe14that remainstodayasafeastin thecalendaroftheLatin RiteChurchasawhole-a thirdclassfeastonNovember25.

ABOLDEXPERIMENT

THATquestionunderliesaboldexperimentnearing theendofitspreparationinSanFrancisco.Onits successorfailurerestthehopesofmanypriests andlaymenalike,hopesthattheChurchintheUnited Statesispreparedforanexcitingnewerainreligion.
TheexperimentersareFatherEugeneR.Zimmers, S.J.,oftheUniversityofSanFrancisco,12priestsin ArizonaandCaliforniaandsixlaymen,ages26to35. Themen,threewithfamilies,arechartergraduatesof theuniversity'sInstituteofLayTheology,foundedby FatherZimmers.Oncompletionofathree-week retreatnowunderway,theywillmoveouttospearhead -theyhope-abreakthroughinconversions.
Theirobject:Toprovethatparishescanpayaswell aspraytheirwaytomoreconverts.
The12parishesinvolved,eightinArizonaandfour inCalifornia.willpaythementoconductinquiry coursesforpeopleinterestedorignorantoftheCatholic Churchanditsdoctrines.Eachmanwillreceive£225 amonth,withincrementsto£450by1964.Eachwill workintwocontiguousparishesthatwillsharethe cost.

seventhmember,a34-year-oldaccountant,afterfinishingthecourse,decidedtoentertheJesuitnovitiate. InbringinglaymenintothelifeoftheChurch,Father Zimmersisawareheisdoingsomethingthemissions havelongdone,withlaycatechists.

THEmagnificentnew churchatAmpleforthreplacesonethatwasbuiltin 1957andhaslongbeenfar toosmall.Boththemonasteryandtheschoolattached toithavegrownconsiderablyduringthepasthalfcentury.Plansforthenew churchweredrawnupin 1920bythelateSirGiles GilbertScott,thearchitect alsoresponsibleforthelarge andimposingchurchat Downside,asisterabbeyof Amplefortb's; consecratedin1935.hasthestatus ofaminorbasilica.
SirGilesGilbertScottwas thearchitectofthenewAnglicancathedralatLiverpool,where,althoughhe washimselfaCatholic,he wasburiedwhenhediedin 1980,byspecialarrangementwiththeCatholic ecclesiasticalauthorities.
Thechoirofthenew churchatAmpleforthwas finishedby1925.Itwasbuilt asanextensiontotheold church,whichservedthen asanaveonly.By1958tha numberofboysinthe
boardingschoolatAmpleforthhadincreasedfourfold. Achurchtoholdatleast 700wasneeded,andthe completionofSirGiles GilbertScott'sdesignswas essential.Nowthesplendid buildingisalmostreadyfor use.

ONthehighaltarwhen thechurchisopenedwillbe asilver-giltcrucifixanda pairofcandlesticksprovided underthetermsofabequest madebythelateLord Bracken,Britain'swar-time MinisterofInformation. whodiedin1958.
LordBrackenwasnot himselfaCatholic,buthe wasagoodfriendof Ampleforth.Hebequested themoneywitharequest thathisfriend.SirAlbert Richardson,apastPresident oftheRoyalAcademyof Arts,shouldsupervisethe designofthecrucifixand candlesticks.Thesewere made,atSirAlbert'sinstructions,byMr.W.F. Knight,a75-year-oldgoldsmithandsilversmith,who tookayearoverthework. Theywillbeatestimonyto thegoodrelationsbetween thisBenedictinecommunity andmanyinEnglandwho arenotoftheCatholicFaith.

Theyarebuildingtheir churchtothedesignsof anotherleadingCatholic architect,thelateProfessor. H.S.Goodhart-Rendel,who wasaPresidentoftheRoyal InstituteofBritishArchitects.
Thefoundationstonewas laidbyCardinalHinsley, thenArchbishopofWestminster,in1939,onlyafew monthsbeforetheoutbreak ofwar.Workwasinterruptedbeforeithadhardly begun,anditcouldnotat onceberesumedwhenthe warwasover.Nowitisin fullswing,withsixmonks andajaystaffof14engaged onitcontinuously.
Theyarequarryingand dressingtheirownlocal stoneandthenbuilding withit.ClerkofWorksand QuarryManagerisanAmerican,Mr.A.S.Webber, formerlythegeneralmanagerofalargeAmerican civilengineeringfirm,who hasgenerouslyplacedhis greatknowledgeandexperienceatthedisposalofthe monks.
Thechurchisfinelysited
ontheslopesoftheCotswoldHills.Bothcryptand sub-crypt,aswellasthe churchitself,willhave ground-levelaccess,asthe groundslopessharplydownwards.
MONASTERY NEXT
INthesub-crypt,whichis nowcomplete,theAbbot wasabletosingMasson WhitSundayinthepresence ofhiswholecommunity.It isbeingusedasatemporary chapel,withchoirstallsfor 96monks,seatingforlay people,andsufficientprovisionforside-chapelsand sacristies.
Later,whenthecrypt aboveiscompleted,the chapelwillbemovedinto itandthesub-cryptwillbe usedfortheday-to-daypurposesofthemonasticlife. Wheninthefullnessoftime thewholechurchiscompleted,workwillbeginon anewmonasterywitha communityofaboutahundredmonks.Atpresentthe monksresideinanadjacent mansion.

RELIGION,whichisamatterofthespirit, runsmightystiffcompetitionfromthemyriad worldlyattractionsthatvieformen'sattention.Trulywemightsaythatthechildrenof thisgenerationaremoreprudentthanthe childrenofthelight
ITWASNOTALWAYSSO.Therewasatimewhen theSundayMasswasthehighlightoftheaverage Christian'slife.ItaffordedhimnotonlytheopportunityOTworshipbutitsatisfiedhissensibleneedsfor visibleandaudiblebeauty.Itsatisfiedhissocialneeds byincorporatinghimintoagreatactionalongwithhis fellow-worshippers.Itsatisfiedhisreligiousneedsby givinghimtheprivilegeofofferinghisgifttoGodand receivingGod'sbountyinreturn.
COUNTERACTION
TODAY,inmostinstancesitwouldseethatreligion isfightingalosingbattletothoseworldlyelements thatappealonlytothesensible,or worse,onlytothesensual.Tremendous enterprisemustbeemployedbythe "childrenofthelight"ifwearegoing tocounteractthepulloftheworld,the flesh,andthedevil,andrestorethepracticesofreligion totheirformerplaceofprestige.
Wemust,then,salutetheeffortsofoneBishopI knowforhisintroductionoftheeminentlysuccessful ChristianLivingDaysintotwoofthemostpopulous areasofhisdiocese-awidespreadone.

STRIKING RESPONSE
ONEcouldalmostsenseagrowingandintelligent responseasthedayprogressed,untilthehighlightof theday,afullyparticipatedMassthat capturedtheessenceoftheexpression, "Christiansaroundthealtar."There, ataMassofferedbytheshepherdofthe diocese,assistedbyhispriestsand people,manyexperiencedforthefirsttimethefurther unitytheyhavewithChrist,theHighPriest,inthis HolySacrifice.
Theresponsewasstriking.Manylaypeoplevolunteeredhowmuchthedayhadmeantforthem.Many priestswereaffordedanewinsightintowhatactive participationintheworshiplifeoftheChurchcan mean.Thereislittledoubtthatthereverberationsof theChristianLivingDayswillbefeltinthatdiocese formanymonthstocome.
Asafollow-up,thenextdayaftereachobservance wasdevotedtospecialconferencesforthepriestsand alsofortheSisters,intendedtopresentpractical assistancetothemincarryingouttheprinciplesof theChristianLivingDaysintheirownindividual situations.
Ifwearegoingtomakeanyheadwayinrestoring ChristtotheworldandtheworldtoChrist,itwould seemthatitwilbedonebymoreeffortsalongtheline ofthoseinitiatedbytheBishopinthisreport.

Theywereaddressedbytheadjudicator,Mrs.J. MacDonaldTaylor.FourteenSistersandBrothers, representingtheirschools,werealsopresent.Mrs. MacDonaldTaylorspokeaboutthepitfallsconfrontingyoungactorsandproducersandgave muchhelpfuladvice.
Itwasannouncedattheconferencethata similarfestivalisatpresentbeingorganisedin SydneybytheGenesianPlayers,aCatholicbody akintothemerrySociety.Thisisagreatand rewardingcomplimenttoPerthTherries,who pioneeredtheidea,andtheirambitionforafestival organisedonanationalbasisby1964mayyetbe realised.

OntheeveningofMonday,June12,agatheringof eightyformerpupilsof C.B.H.S..Highgate,camein pilgrimagetothyroomsin whichtheylearntthefundamentalsoftheirFaithand laidthefoundationsoftheir laterlife.
Thepurposeofthisgatheringwasfardifferentfrom thatofyearsago,itwasto discussplansforthecelebrationoftheSilverJubilee oftieschool.
Themainfunctioninthe celebrationswillbeaMass andGeneralCommunionof OldBoysoftheschool.This isplannedtobeheldduring Augustandwillbepreceded byasoci.:1tobeheldinJuly inorderthatschooldays acquaintanceshipsmaybe renewed.Thefinalfunction istobeofacarnivalnature, thedetailsofwhichwillbe announcedatalaterdate.
