Theideaofthecollection beganwithFatherVittoie Jouet, whowasrectorofa smallchapelthatstoodnear thesiteofthepresent church, towardtheendof thelastcentury.
OnNovember15.1897,a firebrokeoutonthealtar ofthechapel.Severalpersonspresentclaimedthat duringthefireanimageappearedamongtheflameson thewalltotheleftofthe altar.Theyassumedthat itwasthefaceofperson sufferinginPurgatory. An outlineoftheimagewas lettscorchedinthewoodof thewall.Thisportionof woodisalsopreservedin thechurchbutitiskept coveredbyorderoftheecclesiasticalauthorities.
