THISisnotacondemnationofaprofessional woman,becausetheimportantquestionisnot whetherawomanfindsfavourintheeyesofa man,butwhethershecansatisfythebasic instinctsofwomanhood.Theproblemofawomanis whethercertainGod-givenqualities,whicharespecificallyhers,aregivenadequateandfullexpression. Thesequalitiesareprincipallydevotion,sacrificeand love.Theyneednotnecessarilybeexpressedina family,oreveninaconvent.Theycanfindanoutlet inthesocialworld,inthecareofthesick,thepoor,the ignorant;inthesevencorporalworksofmercy.
Itissometimessaidthattheprofessionalwomanis hard.Thismay,inafewinstances,betrue,butifso itisnotbecausesheisinaprofession,butbecauseshe hasalienatedherprofessionfromcontactwithhuman beingsinawaytosatisfythedeepercravingsofher heart.Itmayverywellbethattherevoltagainst moralityandtheexaltationofsensualpleasureasthe purposeoflifeareduetothelossofthespiritualfulfilmentofexistence.Havingbeenfrustratedanddisillusioned,suchsoulsfirstbecomebored,thencynical. andfinallysuicidal.
EQUITY-NOTEQUALITY
THESOLUTIONliesinareturntotheChristian concept,whereinstressisplacednotonequality,buton equity.Equalityislaw.Itismathematical,abstract. universal,indifferenttoconditions,circumstancesand differences.Equityislove,mercy,understandingand sympathy.Itallowstheconsiderationofdetails,appeals, andevendeparturesfromfixedruleswhichthelawhas notyetembraced.Inparticular,itistheapplicationof lawtoanindividualperson.Equityplacesitsreliance onmoralprinciplesandisguidedbyanunderstanding ofthemotivesofindividualfamilieswhichfalloutside thescopeoftherigoursoflaw. AllowingstillthefeastofCorpusChristitobe thegreaterinhonour,thetwoarecomplementary.ThewholemonthofJuneisgiven overbytheChurchtofosteringdevotiontotheSacred Heartandthisdevotionisbasedonthelovewhich AlmightyGodhaslavishedandcontinuestolavishon thehumanrace.
Wespeakoftheheartasbeingthecentreofloveand affection,thusitisnaturalenoughtospeakofthelove whichtheHeartofJesushasforthehumanrace.
TheobjectofdevotiontotheSacredHeartisthe physicalheartoftheWordIncarnateconsideredasthe symbolofhishumanloveforGodandmankind.In additionweadorethathumanloveitself,foritisthe humanloveoftheWordIncarnate,thesacredlovewith whichhelovedMaryandJoseph,themercifullovewith convertedMaryMagdalene,thelovethatpoureditself outinpityonallthatsuffer.Itwastheheroicloveof HimWho"havinglovedhisownwhowereintheworld, lovedthemuntotheend."

Meanwhile,agroupof expellednunshasreported thatCastro'smilitiamenhave desecratedthechurchof SoledadinCamagueyin centralCuba. Thenuns toldtheirstorytoFather WalterW.Winrich,aMary, knollpriestfromRaymond, Washshortlyafterthey arrivedinMexico City.
Theirstory,asrelayedby FatherWinrich,wasthata largegroupofsoldiersenteredthechurch,screaming insults.Theparishpriest hurriedlytooktheciborium,containingtheSacred Hosts,tohisroom. He consumedmostofthewafers beforethesoldiersbroke openthedoortohisroom, takingthepriestprisoner andscatteringtheremainingHostsonthefloor.The soldiersthendressedthemselvesinMassvestments anddancedandcavortedin thechurch.
Thenunsalsoreported, saidFatherWinrich,thata nuns'cloisteredconventin Camagueywasturnedinto anightclub.Camaguey, acityincentralCuba,has apopulationofabout 80,000.

JudgeWalshtoldmembersoftheMaryland$sr AssociationonaBermudaconvention-cruisethat priortohisvisittheBishophadnotbeenallowed towritetohisfamilysinceAugust,1958.
"Butheisnowpermittedtowriteeithertomy eldestsister,Mary,ortomeonceamonth,and betweenuswehavenowreceivedsixlettersFrom him.thelasthavingbeendatedinJanuary,1961," theJudgesaid.
HequotedfromoneofthelettersbyBishop Walsh,whoinMarch,1960,wassentencedbya communistcourtto20yearsingaol.Theletter saidinpart:''Thanksforyourkindletterwhich IreceivedonOctober8.Ittoldmeofthesafe returnofWilliamandPatsy(JudgeWalsh'swife) aftertheirlongtrip,apiece'ofnewsthatrelieved andconsoledmeagreatdeal.

Thirty-ninemenattendedtheretreat,whichwas conductedbyRev.Father AlphonsusFolan,O.D.C. Thevenuechosenforthis occasionwasideal,situated asitisinthestillvirgin tearsbushonthes'aitnern Doubleviewslopes.Itisa quietandpeacefulspot,with glimpsesofthecityand suburbsshowingthrough whatmustbesomeofthe tallestgumsinthemetropolitanarea.Thisview seemsappropriatelydominatedbythetallspireof theChurchofSt.Mary, inLeederville.
Thesettingwastrulythe placeforfruitfulmeditation. Betweenthreelectures,the Rosary,theStationsofthe CrossandBenediction,the menofSt.Dominic'sread, satinthesunorwandered inthebush. Thereweremenofall types-youngmen,oldmen, toughmenandfrailmenbutallmenjoinedtogether onthisdaybythecommon bondofprayer,restful silenceandmeditation.

THEFIDELITYofCatholicpeopletotheir priestsisunquestioned.Soimpressiveisthis regardthatoftenthegoodpeoplewilloverlookseriouspersonalshortcomingsintheir respectfortheclergy.Theonethingthey cannotexcuse,however,andrightfullyso,is thelockofaproperspiritofcharitythat shouldcharacterisethepriesthood.
FATHERLEOTRESS,inoneofhisbooks,saysthat youcancountonthefingersofonehandthenumberof Catholicswhohaveabandonedtheirfaithbecauseofa moraldelinquencyonthepartofapriest,butthatthere isnocountingthenumberswhohavelefttheChurch becauseoftheunkindwordofapriest.
PRIMARY THING
THEPRIMARYTHINGthatCatholicslookforintheir priestsisthemanofGod.Theyreckonthisiswhythey havesupportedseminariesandseminarians,sothatworthyministersmight bepreparedfortheaccomplishingof God'swork.Theyconcludethatthe priestmustbeamanofGodifheis goingtoshowthemthewayandhelpthemtocometo God.GoodCatholicsseeintheirpriestthatawesome figureof"anotherChrist"andrespecthimbecausehe has,asSt.Paulsays,beentakenfromamongmento ministerinthethingsthatappertaintoGod.
Unfortunately,manygoodpriestsfindthemselves caughtupinsituationswhereagreatpottionoftheir workisanythingbutpriestly.Theygetinvolvedinall mannerofduties,someofwhichhavenodirectrelation eithertothegloryofGodorthesalvationofsouls. Thisinvolvementusuallyleadstolessandlessconcentrationonthosethingswhicharethepriest'sprimary duty.
Itisalsounfortunatethatinmanyinstanceseither thepeopleregardtheirpriestasaninfallibleauthority oneveryquestion,eventhoseofwhichhehaslittle directknowledgeorexperience,orthepriesthimself hasassumedsuchquasi-infallibility.
Itwouldseemthatmanypriestscouldwellreflecton whatistheirbasicandprimaryduty-tooffersacrifice andtoadministerthesacraments.Thatiswhyitis surprisingtofindtoooftenapassivedisregardoreven anactiveoppositiontowhatisknownastheliturgy, sincetheliturgyisnothingotherthanwhatisinvolved inthistwofoldprimaryworkofthepriest.
MAYBEITWOULDBEAGOODTHINGifmoreof ourpriestswoulddevotemoreattentiontothosethings thatarerelatedtotheirprimarywork VISIBLEthantothosethingsonlyindirectlyconnectedwithit,orworse,tothingswithno SIGN relationwhatsoever.Theremayhave beenatimewhenthepriest,becauseofhis superiortrainingandeducation,wasthebest-equipped individualinthecommunityformostkindsofleadership.Thatdoesnotfollowtoday.Today.withuniversaleducationandmanyindividualsgoingonfor highereducation,therearemanywhohavereceived asmuchschoolingasapriestandwhointheirown fieldsaremorecompetent.
WhenSt.Paulencouragedprieststobe"allthings toallmen,"hedidnotmeanthatthepriestshould assumerolesnotproperlyhis.Hemeantratherthat thepriestcannotholdhimselfalooffromanyofthe needsofhisflock.Thepeoplewillalwayslooktotheir priestbecauseheisforthemavisisiblesignofChrist's ocncernforHisflock.

Theworkprospered,was introducedintoIrelandin 1822andafoundationwas madeinBallaratin1844.
In1897agroupofSisters startedaschoolinAdelaide Terrace,beingthefirst foundationoftheOrderin WesternAustralia.
FouryearslatertheSisterspurchasedtheproperty andbuildingoftheOsborne Hotel,whichhadbeen ownedbyaMr.Grave.A largedormitoryblockwas addedin1912andachapel andSisters'accommodation in1938.By1955anew blockofclassroomshad beenaddedtotheexisting buildings.
Thelatestworkconsisted ofaboarders'dining-room, threeclassrooms,akitchen blockanddormitoryblock.
While,intheconstantefforttokeepabreastof present-dayeducational trends,continuedHisLordship,buildings,equipment andevenmethodsmay change,thesoulofthewonderfulapostolatetowhich theLoretoSistershaddedicatedthemselvesremained unchanged.

Sincethenthespreadof Communistinfluencefrom ChinasouthwardintoIndoChina,northwardinto NorthKoreaandwestward intoTibethasextendedeven furthertheempireofdialecticalmaterialism.
ThepartnershipofRussia andChinaasnationswitha commonideologymayappearonthesurfaceaperfectlynaturalphenomenon, buttostudentsofhistory itissomethingquiteunique -itisanalliancebetween twocountrieswhichhavean almostunbrokenrecordof hostilityandsuspicionsince Russiafirstemergedasa nationinthetenthand eleventhcenturies.
RussiaisthefirstEuropeannationwhichmade contactwithChina,andthat contact,ifweexcludethe invasionofEuropebythe Tartars,consistedofacontinualencroachmenton ChineseterritorybyImperialRussiapushingits waythroughSiberia.outer Mongoliaand,latterly,ManchuriatothePacific.
Admittedly,Russiaisno longerthecountryofthe
imperialisticCzars,butthe patternofaggressionagainst Chinadidnotceasewith theRevolution.Thenew rulersofRussiatookfull advantageofChina'sweaknessbetweenthetwoWorld Wars,andthevictoryof Mao-Tse-tungin1949seems tohavesurprisedtheRussiansjustasmuchasitdid thewest,for,onthevery eveoftheCommunisttakeover,Russiawascompleting thedespoliationofManchuria.
Itis,therefore,ofgreat interesttoeveryonetoread abooksuchasthisone, inwhichtherelationsbetweenthetwogreatCommunistpowersoftodayare tracedbyanauthorwhohas travelledextensivelyinboth countriesandhasobviously readwidelyonthesubject. TheArrauperformance, ontheotherhand,hasa delicacyandintimacywhich suitsthismostMozarteanof Beethoven'sconcertosadmir-
ably.Asiswellknown,the Secondwasearlierthanthe Firstandshowedstrong Mozarteaninfluence.The othersidegivesawonderful performanceoftheDMajor PianoSonata,whichisa perfectmatchtotheconcerto,beingacontemporary.
