Throughouthislifetime FatherDunnerefusedto speakofhisurgentsummons totheHoteld'Alsaceonthe RuedesBeauxArtsinthe autumnof1900.Buthe wroteanarrativeofWilde's conversionattheinsistence ofhisfellowPassionists, withthestipulationthatit bepublishedonlyafterhis death.FatherDunnedied inDublinin1950.

FatherDtinne'saccount makesitclearthatbefore hisfinalillnessWildehad repeatedlydeclaredhisintentionofenteringthe Church.Italsobringsout thatWilde,thoughunable tospeakonhisdeath-bed, clearlyindicatedthathe wantedtobecomeaCatholic.Thedyingmanattempted tojoinintheresponses.

FatherDunne'saccount sayshewascalledtoWilde's hotelroombyRobertRoss, afriendofWilde'swho himselfhadhastenedto ParisfromtheFrench Riviera.

Wilde,whowenttoParis indisgraceafterservingin prisononamoralscharge, hadtoldRosshewantedto becomeaCatholic.But Rossadvisedhimtohold off. MODERNWOMAN

MODERNWOMANhasbeenmadeequalwithman,butshehasnotbeenmadehappy.She hasbeen"emancipated,"likeapendulumremovedfromaclockandnownolongerfreeto swing,orlikeaflowerwhichhasbeenemancipatedfromitsroots.Shehasbeencheapened inhersearchformathematicalequalityintwoways-bybecomingavictimtomananda victimofthemachine.

THISisnotacondemnationofaprofessional woman,becausetheimportantquestionisnot whetherawomanfindsfavourintheeyesofa man,butwhethershecansatisfythebasic instinctsofwomanhood.Theproblemofawomanis whethercertainGod-givenqualities,whicharespecificallyhers,aregivenadequateandfullexpression. Thesequalitiesareprincipallydevotion,sacrificeand love.Theyneednotnecessarilybeexpressedina family,oreveninaconvent.Theycanfindanoutlet inthesocialworld,inthecareofthesick,thepoor,the ignorant;inthesevencorporalworksofmercy.

Itissometimessaidthattheprofessionalwomanis hard.Thismay,inafewinstances,betrue,butifso itisnotbecausesheisinaprofession,butbecauseshe hasalienatedherprofessionfromcontactwithhuman beingsinawaytosatisfythedeepercravingsofher heart.Itmayverywellbethattherevoltagainst moralityandtheexaltationofsensualpleasureasthe purposeoflifeareduetothelossofthespiritualfulfilmentofexistence.Havingbeenfrustratedanddisillusioned,suchsoulsfirstbecomebored,thencynical. andfinallysuicidal.

EQUITY-NOTEQUALITY

THESOLUTIONliesinareturntotheChristian concept,whereinstressisplacednotonequality,buton equity.Equalityislaw.Itismathematical,abstract. universal,indifferenttoconditions,circumstancesand differences.Equityislove,mercy,understandingand sympathy.Itallowstheconsiderationofdetails,appeals, andevendeparturesfromfixedruleswhichthelawhas notyetembraced.Inparticular,itistheapplicationof lawtoanindividualperson.Equityplacesitsreliance onmoralprinciplesandisguidedbyanunderstanding ofthemotivesofindividualfamilieswhichfalloutside thescopeoftherigoursoflaw. Equity,therefore.ratherthanequalityshouldbethe basisofallthefeminineclaims.Equityistheperfection ofequality,notitssubstitute.Ithastheadvantageof recognisingthespecificdifferencebetweenmanand woman,whichequalitydoesnothave.Manandwoman areequalinasmuchastheyhavethesamerightsand liberties.thesamefinalgoaloflife,andthesame redemptionbythebloodofOurSaviour:buttheyare differentinfunction.Itisbecausemanandwomanare unequalthattheycomplementeachother.

Whenmanloveswoman,itfollowsthatthenobler thewoman.thenoblertheloveandthehigherthe demandsmadebyawoman,themoreworthyaman mustbe.Thatiswhywomanisthemeasureofthe levelofourcivilisation.Itisnotforouragetodecide whetherwomanshallclaimequalityinsexandthe righttoworkwithmen,orwhethershewillclaim equityandgivetotheworldthatwhichnomancan give.Inpagandays,whenwomenwantonlytobe

THEFEASTOFTHESACREDHEARTisperhaps the"keynote"feastofthemonthofJune. AllowingstillthefeastofCorpusChristitobe thegreaterinhonour,thetwoarecomplementary.ThewholemonthofJuneisgiven overbytheChurchtofosteringdevotiontotheSacred Heartandthisdevotionisbasedonthelovewhich AlmightyGodhaslavishedandcontinuestolavishon thehumanrace.

Wespeakoftheheartasbeingthecentreofloveand affection,thusitisnaturalenoughtospeakofthelove whichtheHeartofJesushasforthehumanrace.

TheobjectofdevotiontotheSacredHeartisthe physicalheartoftheWordIncarnateconsideredasthe symbolofhishumanloveforGodandmankind.In additionweadorethathumanloveitself,foritisthe humanloveoftheWordIncarnate,thesacredlovewith whichhelovedMaryandJoseph,themercifullovewith convertedMaryMagdalene,thelovethatpoureditself outinpityonallthatsuffer.Itwastheheroicloveof HimWho"havinglovedhisownwhowereintheworld, lovedthemuntotheend."

Thepopularityofthisdevotionamongfaithful Catholicsisinfactasignoftheiradherencetothe traditionalfaithoftheChurchintheunityofthe divinePersonofChrist.

Itisimperative,however,thatwenotonlylistentS thepleaofChristbutthatweputintoactionthe requestthathasbeenmade.Wemustreturnlovefor love.Wemustmakereparationforourownsinsand thesinsoftheworld,Wemustmakeupwithourzeal fortheindifferenceofagreatmultitudewhoare indifferenttoGodandtheredemptiveactofHisSon.

Itisnotjustafeast-dayoramonthofdedication, itisadeterminationthatourliveswillconformwith whatChristwants-areturnofloveforlove.

Toassistinthisandtolayabasisofspiritualaction whichshouldthenmotivatetherestofourlives,the Churchhassanctionedvariousdevotionalexercises. TheyaretheNineFirstFridays,SacredHeartSodalities,HolyHours,membershipoftheApostleshipof PrayerandFortyHoursDevotion.Theseinthemselves arenotspasmodicefforts,butpartofaconcentration ofeffortonourparttogivetherestofourlivesa necessaryfoundation.Theactsofdevotiononceperformedandthenforgottenwillnotbeaninfallible insurance.Theymustcontinueastheloveofthe SacredHeartcontinues,forwherethereisanabiding lovetherecannotbe,atthesametime,indifference andsin.

FourteenyearsafterestablishingthefirstBolshevikParty,Leninandamere 40,000supportersconquered Russiaandconsolidatedit asthebaseofworldrevolution. Andtoday,only 58yearsafterthecreation

ofLenin'sfirstpartyin 1903,theMarxist-Lenini,ts notonlydirectlycontrolapproximatelyonethousand millionhumanbeings,but theyhavehighlydisciplined supportersineverynonCommunistcountry,manyof themsecretCommunistsin positionsofinfluence,while enormous influence is wieldedthroughnumerous formsofpropaganda.In thewholeofrecordedhumanhistorythereisnothing comparablewiththerateof expansionofCommunism. OneplanelandedatMiamiwith104Brothersof theChristianschools.This wasthelargestgroupof religioustoarriveinMiami sincetheCastrogovernment seizedcontrolofCuba's Catholicprivateschools.

TheBrothersoperated14 schoolsinCuba-includingHavana'sLaSalle AcademyandLaSalle College-nowoccupiedby Castro'smilitia.Included asthegroupwerenatives ofFrance,Mexico,Germany, SpainandCuba,

Agroupofnunswhohad beenforcedtofleefrom CubaarrivedattheSacred HeartNovitiateinNewton, N.J.Thegroupwasmade upof37Salesiannunswho hadreachedFloridaearlier intheweekandthentravelledtoNewtonbycharteredbus.

Whilethepressurecontinuedtoforcemembersof CatholicreligiouscommunitiesoutofCuba,onthe otherhandanincreasing numberofdiocesanpriests arebeingpermittedtoreturntotheirparishes.Foremostamongthesewas BishopManuelRodriguez Rozaswhoreturnedtohis SeeinPinardelRio.However,itwasreportedthat ManuelCardinalArteagay Betancourt, 77-year-old ArchbishopofHavanacontinuestoliveasarefugee intheArgentineEmbassy inHavana.

Itwasalsoreportedthat FatherTrinidadMariaTorrebajas,pas.orofGuanabaynearHavana,whohad totakeasylumintheembaseyofColombia,hasbeen madetoreturntohisparish withabrassbandreception organisedbyCastro'ssupporters.

Despitethefactthat

membersofreligiouscommunitieswereinmostcases evictedfromtheirhomesand subjectedtoinsultsand abuse,theQistro-controlled pressandradionowcharge themwithabandoningthe countryoftheirownfree will,orinobediencetoan "internationalmanoeuvre" oftheChurch.

Meanwhile,theCastroregimehaspracticallydone awaywithallCatholiceducationontheisland,comprisingnearly350schools withmorethan13,000students.Italsoharasses catecheticalinstructionand turnspubliceducationand literacycampaignsintoinstrumentsofMarxistindoctrination.

Inaddition,followingunsuccessfuleffortsbythe government-organisedUnion ofRevolutionaryCatholics andWithCrossandCountry toorganiseaschismatic church,thegovernmentnow hassetuptheso-called RadicalChristianAdvance undertheleadershipof NicholasRios.

Desecration

Meanwhile,agroupof expellednunshasreported thatCastro'smilitiamenhave desecratedthechurchof SoledadinCamagueyin centralCuba. Thenuns toldtheirstorytoFather WalterW.Winrich,aMary, knollpriestfromRaymond, Washshortlyafterthey arrivedinMexico City.

Theirstory,asrelayedby FatherWinrich,wasthata largegroupofsoldiersenteredthechurch,screaming insults.Theparishpriest hurriedlytooktheciborium,containingtheSacred Hosts,tohisroom. He consumedmostofthewafers beforethesoldiersbroke openthedoortohisroom, takingthepriestprisoner andscatteringtheremainingHostsonthefloor.The soldiersthendressedthemselvesinMassvestments anddancedandcavortedin thechurch.

Thenunsalsoreported, saidFatherWinrich,thata nuns'cloisteredconventin Camagueywasturnedinto anightclub.Camaguey, acityincentralCuba,has apopulationofabout 80,000.

Cubasaysthathebelieves mostoftheCubanmilitia, bothmenandwomen,are notanti-Catholic. This viewwas*availedby FatherEmetic)Valdes.Vice Rectoroftheseminaryof ElBuenPastorinHavana, whowaschaplainforanumberofnunswhowerearrestedduringtheAprilinvasion.Hesaidthatsome ofthemilitiahadasked himtobaptisethemand othershadaskedforholy pictures.

FatherValdezsaidhe believedthatmanyofthe militiawereconfusedby theCastrogovernment's propaganda.

Thepriest,whoisnowin Miami,saidthathewas

keptundersurveillancebut thatsomeofthemilitiamen permittedhimtogotothe CollegeoftheSacredHeart inMarianao,wherethe nunswereheldprisoner. Hesaidhealsowasable toconvincetheguardto allowhimtosayMassfor thenuns.

Manyofthemilitia,he said,weresuperstitious. Somehaveexpressedfear ofpunishmentfromheaven forwhattheywerebeing forcedtodoagainstpriests andnuns.Ofthemilitia thatoccupiedthecollege, headded,onlyonewoman memberappearedopenlyto beacommunist,wearinga communistbuttononher lapel.

JudgeWalshtoldmembersoftheMaryland$sr AssociationonaBermudaconvention-cruisethat priortohisvisittheBishophadnotbeenallowed towritetohisfamilysinceAugust,1958.

"Butheisnowpermittedtowriteeithertomy eldestsister,Mary,ortomeonceamonth,and betweenuswehavenowreceivedsixlettersFrom him.thelasthavingbeendatedinJanuary,1961," theJudgesaid.

Thirty-ninemenattendedtheretreat,whichwas conductedbyRev.Father AlphonsusFolan,O.D.C. Thevenuechosenforthis occasionwasideal,situated asitisinthestillvirgin tearsbushonthes'aitnern Doubleviewslopes.Itisa quietandpeacefulspot,with glimpsesofthecityand suburbsshowingthrough whatmustbesomeofthe tallestgumsinthemetropolitanarea.Thisview seemsappropriatelydominatedbythetallspireof theChurchofSt.Mary, inLeederville.

Thesettingwastrulythe placeforfruitfulmeditation. Betweenthreelectures,the Rosary,theStationsofthe CrossandBenediction,the menofSt.Dominic'sread, satinthesunorwandered inthebush. Thereweremenofall types-youngmen,oldmen, toughmenandfrailmenbutallmenjoinedtogether onthisdaybythecommon bondofprayer,restful silenceandmeditation.

Thetreestoodnear Ehden,inthenorth,among agroupof140ofthebiggestcedarsinthecountry.

A"post-mortem"istobe heldbyDr.MalekBasbous, under-secretaryforforestry.Thedeadcedarhas adiameterof16feetand atitsbasethecircumferenceis49feet.'Dr.Basbous hassenttotheUnitedStates forasawbigenoughtocut across-section.

Thedeedtreeisbyno meansthelargestoftheancientsurvivors.There onethatistallerandha acircumferenceof65feet.

ALLTHINGS TOALLMEN

THEFIDELITYofCatholicpeopletotheir priestsisunquestioned.Soimpressiveisthis regardthatoftenthegoodpeoplewilloverlookseriouspersonalshortcomingsintheir respectfortheclergy.Theonethingthey cannotexcuse,however,andrightfullyso,is thelockofaproperspiritofcharitythat shouldcharacterisethepriesthood.

FATHERLEOTRESS,inoneofhisbooks,saysthat youcancountonthefingersofonehandthenumberof Catholicswhohaveabandonedtheirfaithbecauseofa moraldelinquencyonthepartofapriest,butthatthere isnocountingthenumberswhohavelefttheChurch becauseoftheunkindwordofapriest.

PRIMARY THING

THEPRIMARYTHINGthatCatholicslookforintheir priestsisthemanofGod.Theyreckonthisiswhythey havesupportedseminariesandseminarians,sothatworthyministersmight bepreparedfortheaccomplishingof God'swork.Theyconcludethatthe priestmustbeamanofGodifheis goingtoshowthemthewayandhelpthemtocometo God.GoodCatholicsseeintheirpriestthatawesome figureof"anotherChrist"andrespecthimbecausehe has,asSt.Paulsays,beentakenfromamongmento ministerinthethingsthatappertaintoGod.

Unfortunately,manygoodpriestsfindthemselves caughtupinsituationswhereagreatpottionoftheir workisanythingbutpriestly.Theygetinvolvedinall mannerofduties,someofwhichhavenodirectrelation eithertothegloryofGodorthesalvationofsouls. Thisinvolvementusuallyleadstolessandlessconcentrationonthosethingswhicharethepriest'sprimary duty.

Itisalsounfortunatethatinmanyinstanceseither thepeopleregardtheirpriestasaninfallibleauthority oneveryquestion,eventhoseofwhichhehaslittle directknowledgeorexperience,orthepriesthimself hasassumedsuchquasi-infallibility.

Itwouldseemthatmanypriestscouldwellreflecton whatistheirbasicandprimaryduty-tooffersacrifice andtoadministerthesacraments.Thatiswhyitis surprisingtofindtoooftenapassivedisregardoreven anactiveoppositiontowhatisknownastheliturgy, sincetheliturgyisnothingotherthanwhatisinvolved inthistwofoldprimaryworkofthepriest.

MAYBEITWOULDBEAGOODTHINGifmoreof ourpriestswoulddevotemoreattentiontothosethings thatarerelatedtotheirprimarywork VISIBLEthantothosethingsonlyindirectlyconnectedwithit,orworse,tothingswithno SIGN relationwhatsoever.Theremayhave beenatimewhenthepriest,becauseofhis superiortrainingandeducation,wasthebest-equipped individualinthecommunityformostkindsofleadership.Thatdoesnotfollowtoday.Today.withuniversaleducationandmanyindividualsgoingonfor highereducation,therearemanywhohavereceived asmuchschoolingasapriestandwhointheirown fieldsaremorecompetent.

WhenSt.Paulencouragedprieststobe"allthings toallmen,"hedidnotmeanthatthepriestshould assumerolesnotproperlyhis.Hemeantratherthat thepriestcannotholdhimselfalooffromanyofthe needsofhisflock.Thepeoplewillalwayslooktotheir priestbecauseheisforthemavisisiblesignofChrist's ocncernforHisflock.

Toseetheminpapalprocessionsonewouldthink thattheywerepriestsor highprelates.Theywear cassocksandblackvelvet capesandoncertainoccasionsevencopes.Butthe factisthatonlyoneofthe 12isanordainedpriest.

Theother11areoutstandinglawyersofItaly who'lavebeenhonouredfor theirserviceandknowledge. Thoughtheofficeisnow reallyhonorary,theorigins ofthepostofconsistorial advocategoesbackalmost 1,400years.

In589PopeSt.Gregory Icreatedsevenecclesiastic defenders,Churchlawyers empoweredtopleadvarious casesbeforetheconsistories ofcardinals.Eventoday therearesevenactiveadvocatesandfivehonorary ones.

Todaytheconsistorialadvocatespleadduringpublic consistoriesfortheadvancementofthebeatificationor canonisationcauseofsome holypersonastheydidon January16,1961,whenthey petitionedthePopetoordertheadvancementofthe causesofRedemptoristBishopJohnNeumannofPhiladelphiaandofKateriTekakwitha,"theLilyofthe Mohawk."

Theconsistorialadvocates todayarestillgovernedby apapalconstitutionissued byPopeBenedictXIIin 1340,exceptforthoseprovisionswhichcannolonger beenforced.

Onesuchprovisionisthat priorto1870theconsistorialadvocateswerepermittedtoselectfromtheir rankstherectoroftheUniversityofRome. When theuniversitybecamedependentontheItalianState thisprivilegewasabolished.

ThePopeappointsnew advocatesasopeningsoccur,butheselectsthemfrom alistofthreenamessubmittedbytheadvocates themselves.Newmembers areselctedfromtheranks ofthemostoutstandingjuristsinItaly.

Anewadvocatecannot fulfilhisdutiesimmediateonbeingchosen.Firsthe mustmeetanumberofobligationssomewhatsimilar tothoseobservedbyanewlynominatedbishop.

Hemustundergoanexaminationregardingfaith andmorals,whichdeterminesifheisagentlemanandagoodChristian, thenhemustpublishalegalthesisandlastlyhemust laketheoathofallegiance andloyaltytotheChurch andthePopeinthepresenceoftheChancellorof theHolyRomanChurch.

Theconsistorialadvocates arecloselylinkedwiththe pallia,thewollenneckband whichthePopegivesto archbishopstosignifythe fullnessoftheirauthority. Advocatesarepresent whenthelambs,whosewool istobeusedforthepallia, areblessedbythePopeon St.Agnes'feast.Againan advocateispresentwhenthe Popeblessesthenewpallia ontheeveofthefeastof St.Peter.Finally,theconsistorialadvocatespleadduringprivateconsistoriesthat thePopebestowthepallia onwhateverarchbishops havebeencreatedsincethe lastprivateconsistory.

Anotherprivilegereserved totheconsistorialadvocates istherighttowearcopes duringcertainsolemnoccasions,suchasthenine daysofmourningafterthe deathofaPope. They canalsowearthemwhen thePopetakespossession ofhiscathedral,theBasilicaofSt.JohnLateranand whenanewPopecelebrates hisfirstpontificalMassin St.Peter'sbasilica.

Thereisonlyonedifferencewhentheadvocates putoncopes. Insteadof fasteningtheminfront, theyfastenthemontheside.

Theadvocateshavethe dutyofrepresentingand defendinganyonebrought beforethecivilcourtsof VaticanCity. Theyalso mayactaspublicprosecu-

forandhavetherightto defendmatrimonialcases beforeanyecclesiasticcourt withtheconsentofthe bishopinwhoseSeeitis located.

Thecurrentcleanofthe advocatesis71-year-oldCamilloCorsanego,whohas beenanadvocateforthe past22years.HewaspresidentgeneralofItalianCatholicActionfrom1922to1930 whenitencounteredg:eat hostilityfromfascism.

Duringpapalfunctions

Parents,hecontinued, haveunalienablerightsin educationalmatters,and haveanobligationtodefend thoserights.Theymustresistanyhindrancetoeffectivecarryingoutoftheir responsibilities.

Inhisaddresstothe people,HisLordshipgavea briefoutlineofthefounding oftheInstituteofthe BlessedVirginbyMary Wardin1609.Hepointed outhowtheworkofthe educationofgirlswasso veryrestrictedatthattime.

Sinceiswasimpossibleto begininEngland,Mary Wardstartedherinstitutein France.

Theworkprospered,was introducedintoIrelandin 1822andafoundationwas madeinBallaratin1844.

In1897agroupofSisters startedaschoolinAdelaide Terrace,beingthefirst foundationoftheOrderin WesternAustralia.

FouryearslatertheSisterspurchasedtheproperty andbuildingoftheOsborne Hotel,whichhadbeen ownedbyaMr.Grave.A largedormitoryblockwas addedin1912andachapel andSisters'accommodation in1938.By1955anew blockofclassroomshad beenaddedtotheexisting buildings.

Thelatestworkconsisted ofaboarders'dining-room, threeclassrooms,akitchen blockanddormitoryblock.

While,intheconstantefforttokeepabreastof present-dayeducational trends,continuedHisLordship,buildings,equipment andevenmethodsmay change,thesoulofthewonderfulapostolatetowhich theLoretoSistershaddedicatedthemselvesremained unchanged.

Forsixtyyearsat"Osborne"theyhaddevoted themselvestotheworkof ChristianEducationwiththe zeal,efficiencyandselfsacrificewithwhichtheir Foundresshadstampedher Institute,andforwhichthe membersofthatInstitute wererenownedtheworld over.

Oneofthemostinterestingalliancesinthe present-dayworldisthatbetweentheSoviets cidCommunistChina.Withthesudden swingtoCommunismofChinain1949the westfacedaline-upofCommunistnations stretchingfromthemiddleofEuropetothe PacificOceanandcomprisingwelloverhalf oftheworld'spopulation.

Sincethenthespreadof Communistinfluencefrom ChinasouthwardintoIndoChina,northwardinto NorthKoreaandwestward intoTibethasextendedeven furthertheempireofdialecticalmaterialism.

ThepartnershipofRussia andChinaasnationswitha commonideologymayappearonthesurfaceaperfectlynaturalphenomenon, buttostudentsofhistory itissomethingquiteunique -itisanalliancebetween twocountrieswhichhavean almostunbrokenrecordof hostilityandsuspicionsince Russiafirstemergedasa nationinthetenthand eleventhcenturies.

RussiaisthefirstEuropeannationwhichmade contactwithChina,andthat contact,ifweexcludethe invasionofEuropebythe Tartars,consistedofacontinualencroachmenton ChineseterritorybyImperialRussiapushingits waythroughSiberia.outer Mongoliaand,latterly,ManchuriatothePacific.

Admittedly,Russiaisno longerthecountryofthe

imperialisticCzars,butthe patternofaggressionagainst Chinadidnotceasewith theRevolution.Thenew rulersofRussiatookfull advantageofChina'sweaknessbetweenthetwoWorld Wars,andthevictoryof Mao-Tse-tungin1949seems tohavesurprisedtheRussiansjustasmuchasitdid thewest,for,onthevery eveoftheCommunisttakeover,Russiawascompleting thedespoliationofManchuria.

Itis,therefore,ofgreat interesttoeveryonetoread abooksuchasthisone, inwhichtherelationsbetweenthetwogreatCommunistpowersoftodayare tracedbyanauthorwhohas travelledextensivelyinboth countriesandhasobviously readwidelyonthesubject. ThemostinterestingdeductionwhichMr.DavidsonHoustonmakesconcernsthe futurerelationsbetween RussiaandChina,andhis futuretheorytiesinwell withthestrangephenomenon wehaveseenofthetwo countriesadoptingdifferent attitudesoncurrentproblems.

Thisisanunusualbook inquiteanumberofrespects.Firstofallitssubject isunusual;ittakesawriter ofimaginationandcourage totackleasubjectsovague andsprawlingasthehistory oftheupperreachesofa river,particularlywhenthe discoveryofitssourcehas beenoneofthelessinteresting,butcompulsory, itemsofpeople'shistory studyaschildren.

Ihavesaiditisasprawlingsubject.BythatImean thatthevariousexplorers whosetouttodiscoverthe sourceoftheNilewere motivatedbydifferentcompulsionsandapproachedit fromoddlydifferentdirections.AlanMooreheadhas somehowsucceededinmakingthisveryvarietyserve hisends,sothattheNile becomes,asitwere,acentralcharacteragainstwhich weseesuchdiversepeople asBurtonandSpeke,Baker andhiswife,Stanleyand Livingstone,Gordonand Kitchener,andthelittleknownGermanscientist, EduardSchnitzer,generally calledbyhisMoslemname, "Emin."

Eachofthesecharacters deserves,andinfacthas beenthesubjectof,abook byhimself.Heretheyappearinanewperspective, akaleidoscopeofbrilliant personalitiesdrawntothe samefocalcentrebythe mysteryandattractionofa greatriverandthedreams ofanempirewhichitsexplorationawakened.

Thematerialofthisbook isoffascinatinginterest,but Iwouldbedoingitlessthan justiceifIdidnotpaytributtoAlanMooreheadfor amagnificentjobofcolourfulwriting.Iamconvinced thatthisbookwilllasta verylongtime.Itisoneof thoseminormasterpiecesof travelwhichneverlosetheir appeal,andiftheauthor neveragainsucceedsin matchinghiseffortsin"The WhiteNile,"hecanbeassuredthatatleastoneofhis bookswillprobablyoutlive him.Therearenotmany writersinanyfieldtodayof whomthesamecanbesaid.

This,bytheway,would behardtobeatifyouhave agiftinmindforanyone whoappreciatesgoodreading-andgoodwriting.

Itisthemoreeconomical waytobuy,butbargains, alas,alwayshavedefects which,howeverdiscounted atthetimeofpurchase,becomemoreandmoreapparentastimegoeson.Inthis case,theperformanceslack loveandunderstanding.

TheArrauperformance, ontheotherhand,hasa delicacyandintimacywhich suitsthismostMozarteanof Beethoven'sconcertosadmir-

ably.Asiswellknown,the Secondwasearlierthanthe Firstandshowedstrong Mozarteaninfluence.The othersidegivesawonderful performanceoftheDMajor PianoSonata,whichisa perfectmatchtotheconcerto,beingacontemporary.

Disregardingexpense,my advicewouldArrauforthe SecondandtheincomparableSolomonversionofthe First,whichiscoupledwith alatesonata,alsowonderfullyplayed.
