"ACommunistislivingproof thatsincerityisnotenough"

THESEweresomeofthestatementsmadeby visitingjournalistMr.DouglasHydelastSunday night.Mr.Hyde'sappearanceattheSubiacoCityHall wassponsoredbytheGraduateDivisionoftheNewman Societyandhisaddresswasreceivedbyacapacity audience.HisAustraliantourissponsoredbythe ColumbanFathersandthethemeofhislecturesis "UnderstandingCommunistsandCommunism."

Acompellingspeaker, whomusthavebeenequally asconvincingasaCommunist,Mr.Hydeisnowtravellingtheworldtoconvince peopleofthegreatneedto combatCommunisminall itsshapes.

Theaudiencegavethe speakerattentionbecause whathesaidseemedto strikehometothemajority ofthem. Hesaidthat enoughhadbeendone againstCommunismbythe greatmassofAustralians whoprofessthemselvesto beChristianandtherefore fundamentallyideologically opposedtoCommunism.

Withflashesofhumour, Mr.Hydeoutlinedhiswork asaCommunist,firstasa partymanandthenasthe editoroftheDailyWorker. Inthislatter,heaccepted amuchlowersalarythan thepositionhehadpreviouslyheld.Thereason-to helptheparty-showing sincerityandaction:Belief intheideals,ofCommunism andstrivingwithevery meanspossibletogetconvertstothoseidealsinorderthattheymighthelp theworlddominationof Communism.

COMMUNISTLIFE

Mr.Hyderecountedvariousexperiencesinhisown lifeasaCommunist.He showedhowthemembers putthepartyaboveeverythingelseandthatmostof thepeoplewhojoinedthe partywereyoungpeople withidealsoraspiritofrebellion.

ivOncetheyjoinedthe partythatidealismorrebellionwasconcentrated anddirectedbytheoverallambitionoftheparty. Itwasnotleftaloneto battleonitsown,butwas givenasenseofdirection

andpurpose.Tacticswere laiddownforthem. Wherethosewhoaresincereandyethavenodirectionarelostinindividual methods,theCommunistis organised,"knowswherehe isgoingandhowtoget there."Becausethisaim isdirectedfromtheparty headquartersinMoscowultimately,itisbasedontheir philosophythatnothingis permanent,therecanbeno permanentmoralorethical code,noabsolutetruth.

CommunistsgivetoCommunismwhatothersgiveto God,onlytheymakeit moreeffective.Theyare allconvertminded.

THRIVESINILLEGALITY

Mr.HydesaidthatCommunismwasborninillegalityanditswholemode ofactionwasdesignedto fitinwiththis.Itcanwork underground,destroy,use whatitcanofexistingsocietyandthenrejectit. Intheprocess,itisnotparticularaboutitsmethods.

Thewholecatch-cryofthe Communistwas-doesit servethecauseofCommunism?Ifsoitisright.

Hepointedoutquiteforciblythateveryprocedureof theCommunistwasalready laiddownforhimtofollow. 'Achangeofline'would causenoworryorlasting embarrasment.Thetext booksoftheworldrevolutionhadlaiditdown.

Leninwasnotoutofdate, hesaid.Atthepresent time40volumesofhissayingswerebeingprepared toguidethemembersoftoday'spartyjustastheyhad guidedthepartyinitsinfantstages.

Oneofhissayingswas that"Communistsmustuse theunionsasatransmission belttogetCommunismto themasses."

Another:-"Reformisa steppingstonetorevolution," notthechangeofevilthings tosomethingthatisgood, becausegoodbringscontentment.

LEADERS

Speakingofthetraining ofleaders,Mr.Hydepointed outthatinAustraliathere were5,000Communists. Everyoneofthesewasa leaderandthestrengthof Communismcamefromthe factthattheyconcentrated ontrainingtheseidealistsor rebelsintodedicatedmen andwomen.

Iftheyweresuccessful ingettingtheirdedicated Communistsintokeypositions,tocovertheweak spotsoftheenemyandhave educatedpeopletokeepthe idealismtheywouldhave moresuccessthaninearlier efforts.

Thiswouldbethecasein whatishoped(bytheCommunists)willbethenext greatdepressionwhichthey considerwillshrinkAmerica. Oneconsiderationin this,theyconsider,isthat theworldisfastlosinga religiontoholdto.Men withoutreligionaremore easilytakenoverbythose withtheirsenseofpurpose.

Speakingofsomeofthe weaknessindemocracy,Mr. Hydesaidthatwehaveto behonestwithourselves andacceptmorediscipline ofourselvesinworking againstCommunism.SpeakingspecificallytoCatholics hesaidthatforeveryCommunistinAustraliathere were80adultCatholics.Yet thecontrolofthisminority wassuchasitwastoday. Ifpeoplewhowereopposed toCommunismwokeupto theirresponsibilityandopposeCommunisminunions andelsewhere,theCommu-

Thenext10to15years wouldtellthestoryofthe battlesaidMr.Hyde.We havetoseeCommunismas achallengeandthenweha,.e togettoanddosomething aboutit.

ArchbishopSpeaksOn"Role OfTheWomanInProgress"

Wednesday,May24,HisGracetheArchbishop openedthe23rdAnnualConferenceofthe CatholicWomen'sLeagueattheCatholicCentre. HeurgedthememberstoheedtheappealoftheHoly FatherforprayersfortheforthcomingVaticanCouncil. Theyhad,hewasconfident,participatedintheNovena totheHolySpiritbeforePentecostintheirparishes,but theyshouldcontinuetoprayforthatintentionevery day.TheHolyFather,inanApostolicLetteronApril 11ofthisyear,saidthathehadneverceasedtopray fortheintentionsoftheCouncilsinceheannounced thatitwouldbeheld.

Speakingontheroleofwomenintheworldtoday, HisGracesaidthattheinfluenceofwomaninthe shapingofthenationisbeingmoreandmorerealised. Herinfluencemustbeexercisedtoensureaproper balancebetweenmaterialandspiritualprogress.Progressismovementlimitedtotwodirections-forward andupward.Thegeniusofmodernmanisalmost entirelypreoccupiedwithprogressforward,progressin thephysicalsciences-andinthisrespecttheworldis makingfrighteningadvances.

Thecryingneedofthehourisforwomantouseher God-giventalentstoaccelerateprogressupward.Progressupwardisonaninclinedplane.Itistheplane whereonthehumancharacterisformed.Itisprogress intaste,inmanners,inthesenseofreverencewhich strengthensvirtue,"inhatingthatwhichiseviland cleavingtothatwhichisgood."

Onthatinclinedplane,unfortunately,wearemaking littleifanyprogressatall.Itisuphillwork,slowand tedious.Itisnotlabouringtheobvioustosaythatthe characterofmanisformedbythetouchofwoman.If womanislackinginrefinement,whereshallmanfind goodmorals?Itiswomanwho,underGod,implants theseedofvirtueinthehumanheart.

IntheMiddleAges,artists,seekingtoconveythe spiritualbeautyoftheMotherofGod(themodelofall Christianwomen)frequentlypaintedherpicture againstabackgroundofgold.Marybroughtagolden lightintotheworld.Sheemancipatedwomanfrom theserfdomofpre-Christiantimes.Thatistheoffice ofallChristianwomen,tobringagoldenlightintothe world.Ithasbeensaidthatwomanisthelastfortress ofanypeople.Ifmanfails,Godpunishesman;butif womanfails,Godwillpunishthewholepeople. ARNOLDTOYNBEE,inhisbrilliant"StudyofHistory,"speaksofakindofopiatewhich seizesnotionsatvariousperiodsoftheirhistory.Nationsandcivilisationsbecomelikea drugaddicttheyknowtheyaregoingintoadecline;theyareurgedbythevoicesoffriends toarousethemselvesfromthechainsofhabit.But,stupidlyintoxicated,theymayassent, andthenlapsebockintotheclutchesofthedrug.

WINSTONCHURCHILL.inhis"WarMemoirs," feelsadeepsenseofurgencytotelltheworld thatitshabitsofthinkingandlivingarein dangerofbringinganothercatastropheupon theworld."Thepoliticianshaveonlytorepeatthe samewell-meaning.shortsightedbehaviourtowardsthe newproblemswhichinsingularresemblanceconfront ustoday,tobringaboutathirdconvulsionfromwhich nonemaylivetotellthetale."

HowdifferentisthecustomofapeopleintheAmazon Valley.Havingfouledthelandonwhichtheylived, theymovetoanotherplacewithalltheirbelongings. Itmeansalmostasuccessionoffreshstarts.Butnow andthentheywouldmakealongpauseto"lettheir soulscatchuptotheirbodies.."

Appointprefectstoremindthechildrenon FridayafternoonaboutSundayMassandany weekendreligiousclasses.Thispromotesacompetitiveatmosphereandalmostcertainlyensures betterattendances.

ACHIEVINGCatechistswillgettheclassstanSTANDARDSdardstheydeserve.Iftheyalways insistonahighstandard,they willgetit.ThemorethoroughaCatechistis preparedtobefromthefirsttothelastdayofthe year,themoresatisfyingwillbehisresults.

INSISTonthehigheststandardofwork.Decide onyourstandardforactivitybooks,pads,etc.,and seethatyougetthatstandard.Demandneatwork, goodwritingandyoushouldsoonknowifachild isputtingforthhisverybesteffort.Anythingless shouldbringrepeatedexercisesuntilyouaresatisfied.

Inprimaryclassesithasbeenprovedthatcredit stampsforworkwelldoneprovideprobablythe bestincentivetochildrentomakethe,utmosteffort. Theyincitearevolutioninacountryandcallthosewho opposethedisorderas"enemiesofthepeople."Andin thisBabel,weunderstandnotwhatoneanotherspeaks; wehearthewordswithourears,butnotwithoursouls.

InBabel.itismanwhobuildstotheheavensto dethroneGod.Butthere)isthevisionofanothercity whichcomesdownfromheaven-thecitythathadits origininthemindofGod.Augustinesawtheworldas theconflictofthosetwocities.Those beenvictimsoftheopiateofindifferencetoevilseeit thesamesublimevisionofgoodness.

FatherPurcelliswellknownandrespectedbythe28 priestsinWesternAustraliawhostudiedatAllHallows College.ASolemnRequiemMasswasofferedforthe reposeofhissoulatSt.Cohosho'sChurch,SouthPerth, onWednesdaymorning.HisGracetheArchbishop presidedattheMass.

ThefollowingtributetothelateFatherPurcellwas writtenbytheReverendN.S.Rossiter,C.M.,ofSt. Charles'Seminary,Guildford.

"Holyandinnocentwereall hisways, Sweet,temperate,unstained; Hislifewasprayer,his everybreathwaspraise Whilebreathtohimremained."

Thisstanzaof"IsleConfessor"iscloselyapplicable toFatherWilliamPurcell, asthosewhohadthegood fortuneofknowinghimwill recognise;and,nodoubt,his 70yearsonthisetrthwill havemeritedhisplace amongtheConfessorsnonPontiffs.

Manywillretainaclear :mageofhimasaspare, wiryman,notveryrobust looking,withbigbulging eyes,slightlywavinghair, andratherflushedcomplexion.

Whenhewenttojointhe Vincentiansin1916,hehad completedmostofhis studiesatMaynoothCollege. Hewasnotableforhispiety, seriousinhisstudy,earnest andexactinhisduties. Afterhistwoyearsofnovitiate,hewasordainedtothe priesthoodatthePentecost ordinationsonMay25,1918 -whichthusgavehima priestlylifeof43years,almosttotheday. Hisfirstappointmentwas asJuniorDeaninAllHallows,underFatherO'Donnell.Paststudentswill rememberthedaysofthe BlackandTans,followedby theturmoilofthesettingup oftheFreeState;during thesetimestheJuniorDean hadasananxiouspartof hischargetheshepherding ofthestudentsattending theNationalUniversity,and thestrenuouseffortofsavingthemfromthemselves, fromrashnessinbehaviour andaffiliations.Athomehe wasthegentleandkindly supervisorofthedailyroutine,showingahighideal inhisownpersonalreligion, andurgingalltoreapthe benefitsoftheirinitialtraining. Forthetroubledandthe waveringhehadsound counselandthepaternal wisdomofamucholder man;andhisattractive charactermadehimtherefugeoftheworriedandthe afflicted.Thesickorinjured hadhisfrequentvisits,and thegeneroussympathy whichheshowedforanyoneindistress.TheAustralians,NewZealanders andSouthAfricanswere surprisedbyhisthoughtful remembranceofwhatconcernedthemparticularly, suchastheirnationaldays, orsomecricketnews,or ecclesiasticalchangesand progress,andthelikenews fromhome.

Hisexamplewasmore powerfulthanhiscalmand gentlewords,for,atconstantprayerinthebeautiful chapel,attheSolemnMasses andVespers,andinhisown reverentcelebrationofMass, hewas"aburninganda shininglight."Onecouldbe touchedandinspiredbyhis recollection,hisgravity,and hischeerfulnessashewent quietlyaboutthehouseand grounds.And,withal,though notboisterous,hewasbright andentertainingcompany inrecreation,althoughan earlierinjurytoakneeat hurlingdebarredhimfrom muchofthisvigoroussort ofgame.

FatherPurcellremodelled theold''AllHallowsManual"intothe"Breviaryof Piety,"inwhichheleftthe impressofhimself.The prayers,devotionsandmeditations,withthechapterson prayer,liturgyandthe priesthood,aretheexpressionsofhisideals,andgive aglimpseofsomeofhis deeperspiritualthoughts.

Itwasapparenttoall, pastandpresent,thatFather O'Donnellwaswearingout inthe1940's,and,asVicePresidentsince1944,Father Purcellhadbecomethe "baculumsenectutis,"the staffofhisoldage,toaid andsupporthim.Soitwas quiteexpectedthatthe Presidencywastofallto himin1948.

FatherPurcelllivedfor thecollege.Almostallof his43yearsofpriesthood werepassedinit.Asits Presidentheshowedthe bishopshisconcerninprovidingsuitablepriestsfor theirworks;theinterestsof: thestudentswerehisfirst care,andhisrecommending ofplacesforthemwasmade withwiseandbalanced judgment. Helikedtofollowtheir careers,andlongedformore correspondencefromthose overseas.Andwhorevisitingthecollegedidnotfeel thegenerosityofhiswelcome,aswellassubmittoa fullquestioningonhislife andworks?

Thewishtoimproveand extendthecollegeasamissionarypowerhouseledhim tocanvassamongthepastmenforthebuildingof O'DonnellHouse.Heplanned ajourneytoAustraliafor thisend,butwasblockedat theoutsetwhenhewas takenfromhisshiptoGateacreHospitalinLiverpool, tothedisappointmentofthe hundredsofex-studentsin Australia.Nevertheless, thepriestsgavegenerously towardstheexpansionprogramme.

Ashortperiodofillness tookFatherPurcellfromAll Hallows,thenhehadan easierpositioninBlackrock forawhile,buthisdestined placewasAllHallows.He tookoverthedutiesof SpiritualDirector,wherehe hadmostcontactwiththe seniors,racingfasttowards theirpriesthood. HisestimateofthisseminaryworkwasthatofSt. VincentdePaul,whosaid therewasnothingbetter thantocontributetothe trainingofgoodpriests;and hiszealandcharitydrove himwholeheartedlyinhis duties.Hisconferenceswere applicationsofthelifeof OurDivineLordtohis hearers,clearlypointing outthegloriesofthepriest. hood,andthedutiesAnd obligationsofthepriest, withthewaysoffulfilling these.

However,hemadeasuccessfultourfromNewYork toSanFrancisco,beingwelcomedwithtriumphantaffectionallovertheUnited States.Thenewwingwas hislastachievement,andfor thelastfewyearshehas sufferedpoorhealth.Nevertheless,hewishedtocarry on,togiveallofhislifeto hisvaluedvocation.

AllHallowsmeninAustralia,NewZealand,the UnitedStates,NewfoundlandandSouthAfricawill rememberthequiet-spoken, gentleandsmilingPresident; theneatly-dressedpriest (afterthe"top-hatera"); and,aboveall,thecultured, charitable,thoughtfuland410 saintlyFather,whoaided andtrainedtheirstepsto thegoalofpriesthood. Itisthismemorythatwilt compeltheirMassesand suffragesfortheeternalrest ofhisloveablesoul.R.I.P.

Rome:AbishopandtwopriestswhohovebeenaccusedinthepopularpressofhelpingNazichieftainAdolfEichmannescapeItalyfor ArgentinaactuallyriskedimprisonmentanddeathtohelpJews escapeNazipersecution,accordingtoaRomemagazine.

ThearticleintheindependentweeklyVitawas publishedpriortoEichmann'strial,scheduledfor April11inIsrael,oncharges ofexterminatingthousands ofJews.

ThethreeclergymeninvolvedareBishopLouis Hudal,titularBishopof ElaandatpresentaConsultoroftheSacredCongregationoftheHolyOffice, FatherBenedettodaBourg d'Ire,0.F.M.,Cap.,and FatherAnthonyWeber, S.A.C. Austrian-bornBishopHudalwasrectoroftheGermanCollegeattheChurch ofSantaMariadell'Anima inRomefrom1932to1952. DuringthewaryearsBishopHudalhelpedmorethan 3,000Jewsescapefromnazi terrorists,shelteringmany ofthemwithinthewallsof thecollege.

OnOctober16,1943,BishopHudalprotestedtoa GermangeneralinRome againstthepersecutionof theJews,andwonthema briefrespitefrompersecution.

HisprotestwaslaterdescribedbyaJewishpublicationinRomeasa"courageousactperformedbyno oneelse."

InOrgosoloeightoutof 10menareshepherds.The winterpastureispoorand,

whenthereisabadspring andsummer,thecostsof feedingandtransporting theirsheeparegreaterthan thepricetheywillbring. Theirflocksaretheironly patrimony.Whenalean yearthreatenstheircompleteloss,itisnotuncommon foramanoragroupof mentoraidanotherflock. Andsoachainreactionof crime,reprisalsandvengeancebegins.

FatherCossuisstrongly convincedthatthebest remedyistocreateaninterestamongtheyoung menthroughprofessional training,initiativeforimprovementsandhopeforthe future.Inthemeantime, whilethishopeoftheyouth isbeingbuilt,hemustgive thepeoplefood,medical care,culturalandspiritual guidance. Thereisnosignthat Buddhismhasgeneratedany strongresistancetothe PathetLaoandthecommunistVietminh.Norcanthe weaknessofthemilitary resistancebeexplainedby sayingthatthesoldiersare Buddhists.

MostoftheLaotianpeople havenoideaofwhatit wouldmeantoliveunder communistrule.Sofarthe PathetLaohavenotshown thehostilitytoBuddhism thattheyhaveshownto Christianity.AfrontalattackonBuddhismatthis stageinLaoswouldbebad tactics.

AroundVientiane,people rememberthatCapt.Kong Le,theparatroopcommander,nowalliedwiththe PathetLao,andhismen tookpartinpublicBuddhist riteslastAugust.

Eveniftheanti-religious programmeofthecommunistswereclearlyrealised nowinLaos,itisdoubtful whetherBuddhismalone wouldcreateastrongopposition.Whileitteachesa moralcode,itteachesnothingaboutGod.Therefore itwouldhardlypresenta firmbarrieragainstMarxist atheism.

Itissignificantthatthe mostdeterminedresistance tothePathetLaohasbeen madebynon-Buddhists,the Meomountaineers.Mostof theseareanimists,spiritworshippers,andasmall minorityareChristians.

Ontheotherhand,Buddhismisnotthereasonwhy governmentsoldiers,in general,weresoineffective inresistance.Buddhistprinciplesareindeedagainstthe takingoflife,buttheyhave notpreventedBuddhist soldierselsewherefrom wagingwar.

Intheartilleryattackon VientianelastDecember, hundredsofpeoplewere killed,mostofthemcivilians.ThemaorityofThailanders,next-doorneighboursoftheLaotians,hold thesameBuddhistprinciples asareheldhere.YetThailandcontributedabattalion totheUnitedNationsforces intheKoreanwar,abattalionthatfoughtwell. Thecontrolledpressinthe DominicanRepublicfrontpagedlengthlyarticleson thedebateovertheresolutionbrandingthebishopsas terroristsandtraitorsto God.TheresolutionwasintroducedintheChamberof DeputiesonMay9.Itwas reportedthattherewas generalagreementinboth housesastothe"guilt"of theBishops.

ButtheCiudadTrujillo domesticservicebroadcast saidthatduetotheoppositionofsomedeputiesto "anyquickactiononsuch animportantmatter,"the motionwassenttothePermanentCommitteeofJusticeandtheCommitteeof theInteriorandReligionfor "study."Thecommittees wereinstructedtoreport backonMay17.

Meanwhile,CiudadTrujillo'sRadioCaribcrepeatedlyinterruptedits broadcaststoreportcharges thateightCatholicpriests hadbeatenupmembersof thepoliceguardatSanto DomingoCollege.Theallegedincidentwasusedas apretextfortheradio'scall formobaction-thefourth timethetacticwasusedin aweek.

ThelateSisterM.Aidan O'Dee,ofSt.Joseph'sConvent,Northam,passedpeacefullytohereternalreward atSt.Joseph'sHospital,Bicton.

BorninCo.Limerick, Eire,onMarch29,1886, SisterM.Aiden,accompaniedbyhersister,the lateSisterM.Patricia,left theirhomelandin1906to entertheNovitiate.After Profession,SisterM.Aidan wassenttoAlbany,where shetaughtschoolforanumberofyears.In1923she wastransferredtoNortham.Here,intheplanof DivineProvidence,theremainderofheryearswere tobespentintheeducation ofthechildrenconfidedto here.Sisterwasalsoresponsibleforthetuitionin commercialsubjects,andto herpainstakingcaremany pupilsowetheirsuccessin thisavenuetoday.Theyno doubtlookbackingratitude toonewhoneverspared herselfinordertoattain thatefficiencynecessaryto equipthemforsuccessin after-schoolyears. ItwasasDirectressofthe SodalityoftheChildrenof Marythattheinfluenceof SisterM.Aidan'skindlydispositionfounditsgreatest scope,forherloveanddevotiontoOurBlessedLady couldnotbutinfluenceall whocameacrossherpath. Hereshespentallherdays inadorationbeforethe BlessedSacrament,untila fewmonthsagowhenshe wasnolongerabletoleave herbed.

Herlonglifeofentire dedicationtoGodandsouls camepeacefullytoanend, the communitypraying aroundherbedside. SisterM.Dominicwasa nieceofthelateBrother Boland,O.M.I.,andissurvivedbytwobrothersand twosistersinWallace,Victoria.

Sister'sparentsmigratedfromPolandtotheUnited States,whereshewasbornandlaterenteredtheCongregationoftheSistersoftheHolyFamilyofNazareth. Sheisoneofeightchildrenandaneldersisterisalso amemberofthesameCommunity.SisterTimothy arrivedinPerthinDecember,1957.

TheSistersoftheHolyFamilyofNazareth,fivein number,areofPolishdescentbornintheU.S.A.,and atpresentliveinNorthPerthinahomepurchasedby thePolishCommunityofW.A.TheSistersconductOur LadyofGraceSchool,NorthBeach,adaynursery,and onSaturdaysdevotetheirtimetoteachingthePolish childrenreading,writing,geography,historyandsinging.Thisisdonetoenrichtheeducationofthechildren byacquaintingthemwithPolishculture.Theworkis worthwhile,foritgivesthePolishchildrenanopportunityofacquiringtheproperuseoftheirnative language.

Anewshrine,recentlydedicatedbyBishopT.K.Gorman inSt.Patrick'sCo-Cathedral,ForthWorth,hasasits centralobjectofdevotionanicon(above)oftheBlessed VirginwiththeInfantJesus,whichwastakentoAmerica fromRussiain1917.DedicatedinhonourofOurLady ofReturn,theshrinewillbethesiteofaperpetual novenatoOurLadyofRussiafortheunityofChristians oftheEastandWest.successofthecomingEcumenical Council,andforworldpeace.

Themenwereorganisedintoteamswhichworked four-hourshiftsaftersevenintheevening.Theywere classifiedaccordingtoskills,ifany.Butmostlearned forthefirsttimehowtohandleahammer,atroweland awheelbarrow.Notafewturnedouttobegoodelectriciansandplumbers,andarenowmakingaregular livingatthesetrades.

Buttheirpersonalcontributionoflabourwasnot goingtopayforthematerials,landorimprovements. ThatiswheretheSpanishCatholiccharitiesorganisation,Caritas,cametotherescue.Itmatchedevery thousandpeetasthelocalrichpeopleputup.Onelocal businessmanwhoheadedtheprojectpledged100,000 pesetasandtenotherleadersfollowed.ThenBishop RaimundoSanahujaofMurciacoveredthebalance.

AssessmentOfCostOfBuilding

Thusofthe£540eachhomecost,theownerputup £157worthofhislabour.Caritasandthesponsors contributed£400,andtheremaindercamefroma governmentsubsidyof£200or£225obtainablewhen ahouseiscompleted.

Themenworkedlikebeavers-anddidsoafter puttingineighthoursattheirregularjobs,plus travellingtimebetweenthreeplaces,theiroldhomes, theirjobsandtheproject.

"Manywerescepticalaboutthewholething,"says FatherAntonioDelgao."Someill-intentionedpeople spreadtherumourthatthesemenwerebeingcalledon tobuildachurch,nottheirhomes.Somedroppedout. Wehadtoseeknewmembersamongthepoorinother parishes.

"Othersdoubtedthatthemenwouldsticktothejob oncetheystarted,orcouldmasterthetools.Butthey did,andmagnificently.Icallitamiracleoffaith."

Therewereonlyfiveprofessionalmasonsandcarpentersandtheyworkedaccordingtounionhoursand pay,butstayedonintheeveningstoteachanddirect therest.EverySunday,Masswassaidattheproject. Soon,outsiders-merchants,students,farmers-cameto helpintheeveningsandonSaturdays.

Atonetimetheworkprogressedsowellthatthemen coulddevoteanhour,nottothetrowel,buttothe pencil--theywantedtolearnhowtoreadandwrite.

ThequietSundayafternoonIvisitedMurcia.Paco Gomez,atailor,wasstandingguardatoneofthecity's otherhousingprojects,SanJuan.Withhimwerehis wifeandbaby,andtwootherchildren.Amongthe scatteredcementbags,ironrodsandbricks,inthe shadowoftheirfuturehome,theymadeastriking pictureofhopeandaccomplishment.

Toremedythesituation,Spainshouldbebuilding 150,000homesforthenext12years,expertssay.So fartheaverageis98,000,mostlyfortheupperclassesor membersofthegovernmenttradeunions.Besides,the countryneedsnotonlymoreskilledlabour-itmight haveenoughworkersfor100,000homes-butalsoa --sharpincreaseintheproductionofmaterialslike cement,bricks,ironandtimber.Andwiththehomes willhavetocome900schoolsand150churches.Land alsoposesaproblem,becauseuptonowithasbeen mostlyinthehandsofspeculators.

ThisiswhytheCaritasprojectsofferabrightprospectforthecountryasawhole.Theorganisationof "ConstructorasBeneficas,"giventhenecessarycredit, canbuildabout10,000homesayearfor£450each. usingtheMurciaapproachandmass-producedmaterials.Itcanalsoexpandcreditbycallingontherich -atSevillaalonecontributionsforhousinghave totalled£225,000-andadministeringarevolvingfund.

ButCaritasneedsamoregenerousshareofthe subsidiesallottedbythegovernment-thebudgetcalls for140,000homesayear-andlesscompetitionfrom bankingcircleswhichnowarecontrollingmanyofthe higher-pricedhomesubsidies.Finally,the"constructoras"needlessredtapeanddelayinthegovernment agencieswhenitcomestorecoveringthemoney advancedunderthesubsidyprovisions,andawiser useofthepeople'ssavings.

"Here,asinmanyotheraspectsofSpanishsociety," saysasurveymadebytheCentreofAppliedSociology operatingforCaritasinMadrid,"weneedastrong accentonsocialjustice."

Theymeanorganisedhelpforthosefivemillion familiesbymoresocial-mindedcreditinstitutionsand therich,andgenerouslegislationtocorrecttheshortcomingsofbureaucracyandunfairtax-laws.

ReturningtoKaifengin 1945,MotherGratisnot onlyreopenedCheng-IMiddleSchool,butestablished anothermiddleschoolat Sinsiangandalanguage schoolinPeking.

Theyear1948sawMother Gratisonceagainhastily packingabagandfleeing beforetheoncomingChineseCenununistarmies.With herProvidenceSistersand 18membersoftheProvidenceSisterCatechists,a Chinesecommunitywhich shehadfounded,Mother GratiawentfirsttoShanghai.TheretheSisters taughtatAuroraWomen's College.Beforetheyear wasup,thelittlebandwas onthemoveagain,this timetoFormosa.

SettingupthefirstProvidenceSchoolinarented housein1949,Mother Gratiahaswatcheditgrow intoafineinstitution,with acampuscrowdedwith halls,dormitoriesandanew auditorium.

ITISASURPRISINGTHINGthatoneofthe biggestconsolationsthatweasCatholics haveisastumblingblockandsourceof misunderstandingbysomanyoutsidethe Church.Wereferofcourse,totheSacramentofPenancebywhichtheguiltofour sinsiswipedawaywhenwecombineatrue sorrowwiththeactofhumilityofadmitting ourguilttotheauthorisedrepresentativeof Christ.

MOSTNON-CATHOLICSOBJECT:"Whytellyour sinstothepriest?Heisonlyamanlikeyourself.He canbeasinnerhimself.SinisanoffenceagainstGod. OnlyGodcanforgivesin."

SUBJECTIVE

FEELING

TOALLOFTHESESTATEMENTSWEAGREE.Our replyis:"HowdoesGodforgivesins?"Webelievethat ChristsharedHisdivinepowerof forgivingsinswiththosewhoshare inHispriesthoodandthatthepriest isHisagentinreceivingtheadmissionofguiltandexpressionofsorrow fromthepenitentandinreturningaguaranteedforgivenesstothatpenitent.

Itdoesn'thappenveryoften,butIthinkithappens tomostpriestsonceinawhilethattheyreceiveavivid realisationofthefactthattheyareonlyChrist'sagents inexercisingthisamazingpower.Apenitentmaycome inwithaninvolvedmoralproblemaboutwhichthe priesthashadnochancetoprepare.

Orhemayfindthathemustuseeverypersuasive powerathiscommandtotrytogenerateatruesorrow inapenitent.Hefindshimselfeloquentlyspeakingto thepenitent,andwhenhefinishes,heaskshimself: "DidIsaythat?"Heknowsthathedidnot.saythat, butitwasChristspeakingthroughhim.
