HisGracetheArchbishophasannouncedthatarrangementshavebeencompletedfor threemembersoftheSocietyoftheDivineSaviourtotakepossessionofthenewparishof Midvale.Thethreepriestswillfoundthefirsthouseoftheirsociety-normallycalledthe Solvotorians-inAustraliaandengageinparishactivity.TheSocietywillalsoconduct missionsandgiveretreatsintheArchdiocese.
Thisannouncementsees thehappyconclusionofsix monthsofnegotiatingsince HisGracefirstheardthat theSocietyhadpriests available.
Thefirstpriesttoarrive willcomefromEnglandtowardstheendofJune.He istheReverendFatherPaul Keyte,S.D.S.FatherKeyte wasborninEngland.
Theothertwomembersof theSocietywillbearriving atalaterdate,whenthe Fathersareestablished.

Thefounderimposedan additionalvowofapostolic missionworkonthemembersoftheSociety,aswell aspoverty,chastityand obedience.Therulesand constitutionoftheSociety arebasedlargelyonthose oftheSocietyofJesus.

himbytheUniversityin recognitionofhislongassociationwiththeUniversityandhisoutstanding workinthefieldofeducationinthisState.
FounderoftheNewman SocietywithintheUniversityin1924,Mgr.McMahon pioneeredthecelebrationof UniversitySundayinthe followingyear.Itwasone ofthemainobjectivesof thissocietytoestablisha CatholicCollegewithinthe University,Mgr.McMahon playedapartintherealisationofthiswhenSt.Thomas MoreCollegewasbuiltin recentyears.
In1934hewasappointed totheUniversitySenateand remainedanactivemember untilhisresignationlast year.Formanyyearshe servedasachairmanofa Senatesub-committee.In those26years,Mgr.McMahonwonforhimselfthe esteemandfriendshipofthe membersoftheSenateand allthoseconnectedwiththe University.ThehonourconferredbytheSenatewas,in greatpart,asincererecognitionofthis.

Theparishwhichhasbeen assignedtotheSalvatorian Fathershasbeentermed Midvale.Itisborderedon thesouthbytheHelena River.Fromthejunctionof theriverandtherailway linethewesternboundary isfixedbytherailwayline uptoLloyd-st.,alongLloydst.toGreatEastern-hwy., thenceinaneasterlydirectiontoMathoura-st.,northwardsalongMathoura-st.to Morrison-rd.,alongMorrison-rd.inaneasterlydirec-
tiontoFerguson-st.,thence northalongFerguson-stto Toodyay-rd.Thenorthern boundaryisToodyay-rd.In theeast,theparishtakesin RedHill,SwanView,KoongamiaandGreenmount.
TheFatherswillhavethe pastoralcareofthisparish, whichhasbeenadministered untilnowfromtheparish ofMidlandJunction.The parishwillalsoserveasa diocesanbasetoreachthe manyfamiliesfromYugoslavia.mostofwhomare DalmatiansandCroatians.
Atpresentthereareonly threepriestsintheArchdiocesewhocanspeakthe language.

Mgr.McMahonisknown, particularlyinCatholiccircles,astheauthorof20 books,manyofwhichdealt withthesubjectofCatholic education,whichhasbeen hislifelonginterest.Hehas beenatonetime,editorof thispaper,inspectorof schools,andDiocesanDirectorofEducation.
AttheGraduationceremony,Mgr.McMahongave ashortspeech,outlininghis firstconnectionwiththe University-whenitwasin Irwin-st.:hepaidtributeto hismanyfriendshipsformedthroughouthisassociation.HethankedtheChancellorandmembersofthe Senateforthehonourconferred.Thespeech,wasindicativeofthecharacterof therecipientofthedegree. Itsmainpurposewasto extendthankstoallthose whohadhelpedthesuccessfulpresentationofthe 'IonaPassionPlay,"alsothe distributiontothreegroups ofchequesamountingto 1170each.

Thecommitteechairman, Mr.G.Somers,introduced theRev.T.Shortall,O.M.I., ofBrisbane,whothanked everyonewhohadsogenerouslyhelpedinbilleting players,transportandthe manyaspectsofproduction andpresentationoftheplay inPerth.
FatherShortallsaidthat about80,000peoplehadwitnessedtheplayinAustraliaduringthisyear'spilgrimage.ThePerthattendancefortheonlynightof thepageantwas12,500.This comparedveryfavourably withotherStatecapitals.

WESHOULDNOTBESURPRISEDthatthose whoarenotofourFaithfindtheHolySacrificeoftheMassamystifyingexperience. Dealingasitdoeswithspiritualrealitiesmade evidenttousthroughweaksensiblemeans,it isunderstandablehowthissupremeactof worshipismeaninglesstosome.
THEYSEEamandressedinstrangegarments,going throughstrangeactionsinastrangelanguage.We cannotblamethem,therefore,iftheyfindtheMass hardtounderstand.Thewonderisthatthisvery mysteryoftheMassisthefactorthatdrawssometobe interestedintheCatholicFaith.Certainlythegrace ofHolyMassisall-powerful.
WHOSE FAULT?
THISSHOULDBEAMATTEROFCONCERNtoall whoareinterestedinwinningtheworldforChristand whowantotherstoknowandlovethe MassinwhichChristoffersHimselfagain forthemevenasHedoesforus.Ofmore concern,however,isthefactthatthere aremanyCatholics,somewhowould neverthinkofmissingtheirMassobligationbutwho haveneverreallyunderstoodtheMassortheirpartin it.Partofthefaultistheirs-theyhaveassistedat Massonlyoutofduty,notfromdevotion.Maybemore ofthefaultisthatofpastorswhohavenotadequately explainedtheMassorendeavouredtomakeitcome alivefortheirpeople.
TheMassisnotlikeotherprayers.Itisessentially anaction,adrama.Byre-enactingwhatJesusdidat theLastSupperthepriestdoesagainwhatHedidfor usontheCrossofCalvary.ThecongregationparticipatesintheMassofferedbyhisordainedpriestwith whomHehassharedHisdivinepowers.ThroughHis priestHesaysagainanddoesagainwhatHedidatthe LastSupper,namely.Hechangesbreadandwineinto HisownBodyandBlood.
Thepriestsolemnlyre-enactsthesegesturesatthe altarandrepeatsthesolemnwordsofConsecrationfirst spokenbyChrist.ThatiswhythecelebrantofMass mustalwaysbecarefultogivehiswordsand*his gesturestheirfullvalue.

IMPORTANT
AGENUFLECTIONisthebendingofthekneeofa creaturebeforehisCreator.Itshouldoutwardlyconveybyitsdignityandsolemnity whatitinwardlysignifies.Thesign ofthecrossisanouterexpressionof faithintheTrinityandtheIncarnation.Themannerinwhichitis carriedoutcanbeedifyingorscandalous.Aneloquent gesturecanconveydeepmeaning.Acarelessgesture canmeannothing.

Onlybyconstantcarecanweavoidthechargeof "mumbo-jumbo"levelledbythosewhodonotunderstandwhatisgoingon.Precisenessanddevoutness canbridgethe"language-barrier"andedifyeventhose whoareleastacquainted.

Withoutoutsidehelpinmanpoweraswellas supplies,thecommunistsinLaoscouldnothave wontheirsuccesses.Itismostunlikelythatnone butadvisersandcommunistcadrescamefromoutside.
SupplieswereairliftedbytheRussiansfrom communist-ruledNorthVietnam.Thatiswhere thehelperscamefrom,too.
Italkedtotwopersons,who,inwidelyseparated areasofLaos,heardordersbeinggivenintheVietnamlanguagetoattackingtroops.Onewasa civilianrefugee,theotherwasawoundedsoldier.
AVietminh(NorthVietnamesecommunist) soldiertakenprisonerinLaoshadapparentlybeen awayfromhishomeinNorthVietnamformonths.
Iftheceasefireholds,thecommunistscertainly willnotallowtheinternationalsupervisorycommissionintotheirareasuntiltheVietminhsoldiers havepulledbackacrosstheNorthVietnamborder oratleastgetoutofsightinthejungle.
Anotherdecisivefactorinthecommunistmilitarysuccesswasthefeeblenessoftheresistance offeredbyLaotiangovernmenttroops.Therewere. indeed,exceptions,butingeneralthemotivepower forstrongresistanceseemedlacking.Mostofthe peopleinLaoshavehad'noexperienceoflifeunder communistrule.Wheretheyhavehad,asinSam Neuaprovince,thereisstronglocalresistance.No communistinLaoscalshimselfacommunist,and evenifhedidfewpeoplewouldshownanyconvictionsfororagainsthim.
