NewReligiousOrderComesToTheArchdiocese ParishForSalvatorianFathers

HisGracetheArchbishophasannouncedthatarrangementshavebeencompletedfor threemembersoftheSocietyoftheDivineSaviourtotakepossessionofthenewparishof Midvale.Thethreepriestswillfoundthefirsthouseoftheirsociety-normallycalledthe Solvotorians-inAustraliaandengageinparishactivity.TheSocietywillalsoconduct missionsandgiveretreatsintheArchdiocese.

Thisannouncementsees thehappyconclusionofsix monthsofnegotiatingsince HisGracefirstheardthat theSocietyhadpriests available.

Thefirstpriesttoarrive willcomefromEnglandtowardstheendofJune.He istheReverendFatherPaul Keyte,S.D.S.FatherKeyte wasborninEngland.

Theothertwomembersof theSocietywillbearriving atalaterdate,whenthe Fathersareestablished.

TheSalvatorianFathers werefoundedatRomeon December8,1881,byJohann BaptistJordan.Itsfirst

titlewastheSocietyof CatholicInstruction,which waschangedafterafew yearstoitspresenttitleof SocietyoftheDivine Saviout

Thefounderimposedan additionalvowofapostolic missionworkonthemembersoftheSociety,aswell aspoverty,chastityand obedience.Therulesand constitutionoftheSociety arebasedlargelyonthose oftheSocietyofJesus.

Thehabitwornbythe membersisblack,witha blackcincture,inwhichfour knotsaretiedtoremindthe wearerofhisfourvows.In tropicalcountriesthehabit

NOonewitheventhemostsuperficialacquaintance withtheRightRev.MonsignorJohnThomasMcMahon couldbedeceivedeitherbyhistitleorhisnameorthe coloursofhisgownsoastosupposethathemightnot beanIrishman.Heis,indeed,andmore.Churchman, educator,administrator,author,pastorandsenator, Mgr.McMahonhastouchedthelifeofthiscommunity atmanyplaces,andbyhisbenignsolicitude,hisshrewd andpracticalwisdom,hispiety,hasdonethingsthat cannotbemeasuredbycommonyardsticksorrewarded byusastheydeserve.Onlythosewhohaveknown himbestandlongest,whohaveenjoyedhisfellowship land,withrespect,heisajovialman);onlythosewho sharehishopesandideals,whohavelabouredforthe sameends,cansaymosttrulywhathehasdoneand whathedeserves.Theyhavesaiditwithonevoice; theyhavekissednoBlarneyStone,theyaskforhim ourhighestacademichonour.HisservicetotheSenate andtheStateishardlytobematchedbytheDegree ofDoctorofLetters,honoriscausa.Neverthelessitis ourhopethatonewhoknowsthevanityofworldly titles.andthattheybutservetodistinguishJackfrom hisfellow,willyetseeinthisawardamarkofgenuine affectionandacceptitadmajoremgloriamDei-to thegreatergloryofGod.

Mgr.McMahonhadthis signalhonourconferredon Rev.Bro.A.E.TRAVERS, M.A.

himbytheUniversityin recognitionofhislongassociationwiththeUniversityandhisoutstanding workinthefieldofeducationinthisState.

FounderoftheNewman SocietywithintheUniversityin1924,Mgr.McMahon pioneeredthecelebrationof UniversitySundayinthe followingyear.Itwasone ofthemainobjectivesof thissocietytoestablisha CatholicCollegewithinthe University,Mgr.McMahon playedapartintherealisationofthiswhenSt.Thomas MoreCollegewasbuiltin recentyears.

In1934hewasappointed totheUniversitySenateand remainedanactivemember untilhisresignationlast year.Formanyyearshe servedasachairmanofa Senatesub-committee.In those26years,Mgr.McMahonwonforhimselfthe esteemandfriendshipofthe membersoftheSenateand allthoseconnectedwiththe University.ThehonourconferredbytheSenatewas,in greatpart,asincererecognitionofthis.

TheNewParish

Theparishwhichhasbeen assignedtotheSalvatorian Fathershasbeentermed Midvale.Itisborderedon thesouthbytheHelena River.Fromthejunctionof theriverandtherailway linethewesternboundary isfixedbytherailwayline uptoLloyd-st.,alongLloydst.toGreatEastern-hwy., thenceinaneasterlydirectiontoMathoura-st.,northwardsalongMathoura-st.to Morrison-rd.,alongMorrison-rd.inaneasterlydirec-

tiontoFerguson-st.,thence northalongFerguson-stto Toodyay-rd.Thenorthern boundaryisToodyay-rd.In theeast,theparishtakesin RedHill,SwanView,KoongamiaandGreenmount.

TheFatherswillhavethe pastoralcareofthisparish, whichhasbeenadministered untilnowfromtheparish ofMidlandJunction.The parishwillalsoserveasa diocesanbasetoreachthe manyfamiliesfromYugoslavia.mostofwhomare DalmatiansandCroatians.

Atpresentthereareonly threepriestsintheArchdiocesewhocanspeakthe language.

RightReverendMonsignorJ.T.McMAHON, M.A.,Ph.D.,H.Dip.Ed.,Hon.D.Litt.,P.P. Mgr.McMahonisknown, particularlyinCatholiccircles,astheauthorof20 books,manyofwhichdealt withthesubjectofCatholic education,whichhasbeen hislifelonginterest.Hehas beenatonetime,editorof thispaper,inspectorof schools,andDiocesanDirectorofEducation.

AttheGraduationceremony,Mgr.McMahongave ashortspeech,outlininghis firstconnectionwiththe University-whenitwasin Irwin-st.:hepaidtributeto hismanyfriendshipsformedthroughouthisassociation.HethankedtheChancellorandmembersofthe Senateforthehonourconferred.Thespeech,wasindicativeofthecharacterof therecipientofthedegree. Itwassincereandatthe sametimenotwithoutwit.

Twootherreligiouswho receiveddegreesfromthe Universityonthatnight, alongwithallothersuccessfulgraduatesweretwo ChristianBrothers.They wereRev.BrotherB.C. Manion,BA.,B.Sc.,B.Ed., M.A.C.E.(Memberofthe

AustralianCollegeofEducation)whoisnowteaching HistoryandEconomicsat C.B.C.,Terrace,andRev. BrotherA,E.Travers,M.A., whoisteachingthesubLeavingclassatC.B.C., Fremantle. BrotherManion,whoreceivedhisB.Sc.,isanexpupiloftheC.B.C.,Terrace, andBrotherTraversfrom AquinasCollege.

SirAlexReid,Chancellor oftheUniversity,waspresentwithLadyReid,and alsoProfessorK.Walker, actingVice-Chancellor. MonsignorMcMahonwore therobesofaDoctorof Letters-thehonorarydegreerecentlyconferredon him.ProfessorsB.Grieve andS.Graveattendedwith othermembersoftheUniversitystaff.Acolourful academicprocessionmade itswayfromtheCollegeto thechapel. CelebrantoftheMasswas V.Rev.J.R.Boylen,S.J., RectoroftheCollege.Deaconandsub-deaconwere Revs.Dr.B.R.Adderleyand P.McCrannrespectively. FatherAdderley,whoisa formerpresidentofthe NewmanSociety,also preached.MastersofceremonieswereRev.T.Walsh andT.Quinlan,S.J.The Collegechoirwasconducted byMr.A.Haydock. InhissermonFatherAdderleymadeclearthetrue meaningofChurchunity, emphasisingtheneedfor prayer,studyandcharityin theinterestofChristian unity Hesaidthat''thegreatest needofourtimeisfor Christians,bothCatholic andnon-Catholic,toremedy thedivisionsofChristendom.Thefundamentalreasonfordoingthisisthe sametodayasinallages, namelythatitisOurLord's willthatHisfollowers shouldbeunitedinthe visiblecommunionofHis MysticalBody,theChurch." EducatedatMungretCollege,Limerick,heentered theOblatesatBelmont House,Stillorgan,in1915, andwasordainedtherein 1920,afterwhichhejoined theteachingstaffofSt. Patrick'sCollege,Jaffna, Ceylon. HetookhisM.A.degreeat Cambridge,andreturnedto Jaffnain1938,wherehebecameRectoroftheCollege. In1954FatherLongcame toAustralia.Hespenthis firstyearingivingretreats andlecturesinW.A.Later hewenttotheEastern States,wherehebecamethe firstRectorofIonaCollege, Lindum,Brisbane,in1958. Thecommitteewhovoluntarilytookon thetaskofmakingarrangementsforthePassionPlaypresentedinPerthonMarch19, heldafinalfunctiononMonday,May15. ThefunctionwasheldattheBrailleSociety Hall. Itsmainpurposewasto extendthankstoallthose whohadhelpedthesuccessfulpresentationofthe 'IonaPassionPlay,"alsothe distributiontothreegroups ofchequesamountingto 1170each.

Presentationsweremade toarepresentativeofHis GracetheArchbishopIRt. Rev.Mgr.M.McKeon),for useattheWanderingMission;toarepresentativeof theAnglicanArchbishop (Rev.CanonK.Halleyfor useattheSouth-West NativeMissionandtoMrs. Florence Hummerston, J.P.,fortheWanslea Children'sHostel.

Thecommitteechairman, Mr.G.Somers,introduced theRev.T.Shortall,O.M.I., ofBrisbane,whothanked everyonewhohadsogenerouslyhelpedinbilleting players,transportandthe manyaspectsofproduction andpresentationoftheplay inPerth.

FatherShortallsaidthat about80,000peoplehadwitnessedtheplayinAustraliaduringthisyear'spilgrimage.ThePerthattendancefortheonlynightof thepageantwas12,500.This comparedveryfavourably withotherStatecapitals.

MUMBOJUMBO?

WESHOULDNOTBESURPRISEDthatthose whoarenotofourFaithfindtheHolySacrificeoftheMassamystifyingexperience. Dealingasitdoeswithspiritualrealitiesmade evidenttousthroughweaksensiblemeans,it isunderstandablehowthissupremeactof worshipismeaninglesstosome.

THEYSEEamandressedinstrangegarments,going throughstrangeactionsinastrangelanguage.We cannotblamethem,therefore,iftheyfindtheMass hardtounderstand.Thewonderisthatthisvery mysteryoftheMassisthefactorthatdrawssometobe interestedintheCatholicFaith.Certainlythegrace ofHolyMassisall-powerful.

WHOSE FAULT?

THISSHOULDBEAMATTEROFCONCERNtoall whoareinterestedinwinningtheworldforChristand whowantotherstoknowandlovethe MassinwhichChristoffersHimselfagain forthemevenasHedoesforus.Ofmore concern,however,isthefactthatthere aremanyCatholics,somewhowould neverthinkofmissingtheirMassobligationbutwho haveneverreallyunderstoodtheMassortheirpartin it.Partofthefaultistheirs-theyhaveassistedat Massonlyoutofduty,notfromdevotion.Maybemore ofthefaultisthatofpastorswhohavenotadequately explainedtheMassorendeavouredtomakeitcome alivefortheirpeople.

TheMassisnotlikeotherprayers.Itisessentially anaction,adrama.Byre-enactingwhatJesusdidat theLastSupperthepriestdoesagainwhatHedidfor usontheCrossofCalvary.ThecongregationparticipatesintheMassofferedbyhisordainedpriestwith whomHehassharedHisdivinepowers.ThroughHis priestHesaysagainanddoesagainwhatHedidatthe LastSupper,namely.Hechangesbreadandwineinto HisownBodyandBlood.

Thepriestsolemnlyre-enactsthesegesturesatthe altarandrepeatsthesolemnwordsofConsecrationfirst spokenbyChrist.ThatiswhythecelebrantofMass mustalwaysbecarefultogivehiswordsand*his gesturestheirfullvalue.

MANNER

IMPORTANT

AGENUFLECTIONisthebendingofthekneeofa creaturebeforehisCreator.Itshouldoutwardlyconveybyitsdignityandsolemnity whatitinwardlysignifies.Thesign ofthecrossisanouterexpressionof faithintheTrinityandtheIncarnation.Themannerinwhichitis carriedoutcanbeedifyingorscandalous.Aneloquent gesturecanconveydeepmeaning.Acarelessgesture canmeannothing.

Byhisactionsthepriest-celebrantcaninvitehis peopletoparticipateinthegreatactionoftheMass. Conversely,hiscarelessnesscancontributetotheir distractionandunawareness.

EverypriestmuststruggleagainstlettingtheMass becomesomethingroutine.Oft-repeatedactionstend tobecomethoughtlessactionsandsometimessloppy actions.TheaweoftheMassmustalwaysbereflected inthemannerinwhichitiscelebratedbythepriest.

Onlybyconstantcarecanweavoidthechargeof "mumbo-jumbo"levelledbythosewhodonotunderstandwhatisgoingon.Precisenessanddevoutness canbridgethe"language-barrier"andedifyeventhose whoareleastacquainted.

Howdidtheymakethesemilitarygainsthat theyarenowgoingtoexploittothegreaterperil ofallSouth-EastAsia?

Hardlybythemilitarypowerofthecommunist PathetLaoforcesthemselves,whoseseasoned soldiersmustbefew.Andnotbydintofpopular support.

Withoutoutsidehelpinmanpoweraswellas supplies,thecommunistsinLaoscouldnothave wontheirsuccesses.Itismostunlikelythatnone butadvisersandcommunistcadrescamefromoutside.

SupplieswereairliftedbytheRussiansfrom communist-ruledNorthVietnam.Thatiswhere thehelperscamefrom,too.

Italkedtotwopersons,who,inwidelyseparated areasofLaos,heardordersbeinggivenintheVietnamlanguagetoattackingtroops.Onewasa civilianrefugee,theotherwasawoundedsoldier.

AVietminh(NorthVietnamesecommunist) soldiertakenprisonerinLaoshadapparentlybeen awayfromhishomeinNorthVietnamformonths.

Iftheceasefireholds,thecommunistscertainly willnotallowtheinternationalsupervisorycommissionintotheirareasuntiltheVietminhsoldiers havepulledbackacrosstheNorthVietnamborder oratleastgetoutofsightinthejungle.

Anotherdecisivefactorinthecommunistmilitarysuccesswasthefeeblenessoftheresistance offeredbyLaotiangovernmenttroops.Therewere. indeed,exceptions,butingeneralthemotivepower forstrongresistanceseemedlacking.Mostofthe peopleinLaoshavehad'noexperienceoflifeunder communistrule.Wheretheyhavehad,asinSam Neuaprovince,thereisstronglocalresistance.No communistinLaoscalshimselfacommunist,and evenifhedidfewpeoplewouldshownanyconvictionsfororagainsthim.

Whatwillthecommunistsaimatinexploiting theirmilitarysuccessinLaos?

TheirtacticsinrecentmonthsfromMoscowto HanoiinNorthVietnamandtoXiengKhouang, RedheadquartersinLaos,indicatelargerambitions thanmerelytohaveaneutralLaos.

ItisinXiengKhouangprovincethatFather LouisLeroy,O.M.I.,wascapturedbyPathetLao forcesonApril15andstillremainsaprisoner. AnotherFrenchmissionary,FatherMicheleCoquelet,0.M.I.,isreportedmissinginthisareafromthe samedate.

ArchbishopGonzi,whoreturnedfromatriptoRome onApril29,saidthattheinterdictplacedontheLabour partyleadershadwonthebackingofCardinalTardini, theVaticanSecretaryofState.

The76-year-oldArchbishopalsodeniedMr.Mintoff's allegationthattheecclesiasticalsanctionsissuedagainst himweremadetoaidtheBritishgovernmentrather thanforreligiousreasons.

TwoyearsafterBishopArkfeldinformedthe SacredCongregationforthePropagationofthe FaithinRomeofthisgrowinginterestonthepart ofNewGuinea'syoungmen.Hewaspromptly authorisedbytheVaticantctakethefirstofficial stepsinfoundinganeworderforthem,

ByMay,1959,whenthenovitiatewasopen0, therewerealreadytennovices,sevenpostulants and23candidates.TheVaticangrantedaspecial subsidyfortheerectionofsixpermanentbuildings forthegrowingcommunity.

Thesebuildingsincludedclassrooms,dormitories andatwo-storeynovitiate,allerectedbytheyoung menthemselvesunderthedirectionofBrother SeraphicusSchmale.S.V.D.,abuilderbyprofession.

BishopArkfeldsaidthataspeakingknowledge ofEnglish.theofficiallanguageoftheTerritoryof PapuaandNewGuinea,isarequirementfor entranceintotheorder.

"Ourpurposeistoproduceskilledtradesmen andhighlyqualifiedteachersfortheWewak vicariateandotherareasofNewGuinea."Bishop Arkfeldsaid.

Beethoven's"Moonlight" Sonatawasplayedwithout fussandornamentation.The fourChopinimpromptus whichfollowedweresomewhatbelowthestandardof theBachandBeethoven performances.Itwasnotfor lackofdelicacyforRavel's OiseauxTristeswasperfectlydone.

Thelastitemoftherecital wastheParaphraseonDie FledermausbyGodowsky. Thisunknownpieceproved tobeingeniousratherthan beautifulanditscleverness wasreminiscentofRichard ratherthanJohannStrauss. Itsintricaciesatleastserved toshowforththetechnical brillianceofSimon.
