Thedayitself,oneof beautifulsunshine,gavethe "clients"ofOurLadyan opportunityfordevotedparticipationintheprocession.
HisLordshipBishopRafferty,impartedthespecial BlessingoftheSick,asis doneatLourdes.Itwasa solemnmoment,enrichedby theprayer:"Turnthen,most graciousadvocate,thine'eyes ofmercytowardsus,"words trulyappropriatetothe blessingofthefaithfulsick whoattended.

TheannualCatholicBallwassuccessfullyheldlastTuesdaynight. Itwasestimatedthat700dancerswereonthefloorandalarge crowdofonlookerstowatchthepresentationofdebutantes.
The38debutanteswere presentedtotheMostRev. J.Rafferty.
TheEmbassyBallroom waswelldecoratedwith largebasketsofflowersin avarietyofcolours,streamersandballoons.Twofloral archeswerethepredominantfeatures.
Theworkofdecorating theballroomwascarried outbyvoluntaryhelpersof theY.C.W.Girls'Movement underthecapabledirection ofMissPaulineKnight.
HisLordship,accompaniedbytheRev.P.O'Maraof StMary'sCathedral,was welcomedbytheRev.F. Walsh,representingRev.J. O'Brien,Chaplaintothe
YouthMovementsforthe Archdiocese.
TheStateExecutivewere presentedtoHisLordship andtheystoodbesidehim ashereceivedthedebutantes.TheywereMisses RoseanneBroderick(president),PatThomson(vicepresident),PamWatson (secretary)andMr.Don Allen(presidentY.C.W. Boys).

WHATISYOUTH SUNDAYANDHOWDID ITORIGINATE? CommonwealthSundaybeganinLondonin1937when 10,000youngpeoplefrom allovertheworldmettogetherintheRoyalAlbert Hallforoneoftheworld's biggest-everrallies.
Theywereofallcolours, creedsandtraditionsand theymettogetherinaspirit ofbrotherhoodunderthe guidingprinciplethatall meneverywhereshouldbe freeandequal.
Atthismeeting-held undertheauspicesofthe thenrulingmonarchKing GeorgeVI-itwasdecided thateachyearthereafter youngpeople(betweenthe agesof14and25)throughouttheCommonwealth shouldmeetonaspecialday setaside each yeartodedicatethemselvesincommon loyaltytoservicetothe Commonwealthandthe BrotherhoodofMan. Thatiswhy,simultaneouslythroughout12nationsGt.Britain.Malaya.Nyasaland-Rhodesia,Ceylon, India,Pakistan,NewZealand,Canada,Australia,and themorerecentmembers Ghana,NigeriaandSierra Leone-Commonwealth YouthSundaywillbecelebratedthisSunday. TheAssociatedYouth CommitteeofW.A.,whichis organisingthedetailsofthe bigdaywiththeco-opera-
tionofStateandindependentschools,youthbodies andsportingclubs,has securedrepresentativesfrom allcountriesexceptSierra Leone-whichgainedits independencelastmonthandNigeria.
TwoyoungGhana-born schoolteachersfromNarroginareamongthosewho willmarchfortheircountry. Lastyeartheywerepresent atthecelebrationsinGhana. Theclergyofallchurches havebeenaskedtoreferto CommonwealthYouthSundayduringtheirmorning servicesandhavebeenprovidedwitha"Commonuniversalprayer"fortheday. Apanelofteenagershas beenselectedtogiveaddressesontheEsplanade. TheW.A.EducationDepartmenthasbeengivingspecial tutorinlsatmostschools andwillbewellrepresented. IfonecouldliftthisDeclarationofIndependenceto ahighersphere,onecouldbeindependentofmoods
justasoneispoliticallyindependentofdictators.As dependenceonGodgivesmeafreedomofchoicein thepoliticalorder,soanincreaseddependenceon Godwouldgivemeafreedomofchoiceoverlower things.Icouldtakethemorleavethem.Whetherthe toastwascoldorhotatbreakfast,whetherthemorningpaperarrivedordidnot,whetherthewoman driveraheadofmeputoutherhandornot,asshe suddenlyturned,wouldinnowayaffectmytemperament,mydispositionormymentalstate.Confronted withgoodthingsintheworld,Icantakethembecause theyaregood,orIcanrefusethembecausetheyare PARTIALLYgood.HavingfixedmywillonPerfect Goodness,nothingthatisafractionofitcancompletelybendmywilltoit.

In1960therewere43,696diocesanand21,129religiousorderpriestsinItaly.servingapopulationof aboutfiftymillionpeople.Onthesurface,Cardinal Pizzardosaid,thiswouldseemtobearosypicturesince itworksouttomorethanonepriestforeverythousand inhabitants.
However,suchaconclusionissuperficial.hewarned. Eachyearthepopulationincreasesby400,000.Inthe pastfiveyears760newparisheshavebeenopenedin Italyandhavehadtobestaffed.
Inthefaceofpopulationgrowthandincreasingdemandsforavarietyofministries,therearetoday1,627 fewerdiocesanprieststhantherewerefiveyearsago. Infact,HisEminencecontinued,duringeachofthepast fouryears300morepriestshavediedthanhavebeen ordained)
WhiletheCardinalgavenostatisticsforpriestsof religiousorders,the1956and1961Vaticanyearbooks showthattheirnumberisgrowing.Forexample,in theMilanarchdiocesetherewere2,285diocesanpriests in1956andonly2,255in1961.Religiousorderpriests forthisdioceseincreasedfrom1,335in1956to1,442in 1961.TheTurinarchdioceseregisteredadecreaseof80 diocesanpriestsandanincreaseof140religiousorder priestsinthesamefive-yearperiod.
Thoughtheirnumbersaregrowing,manyofthe religiousorderpriestsaredestinedforthemissionsand thereforedonothelpinsolvingthenationalproblem.
Asfurtherproofofthedownwardtrendofvocations inItaly,CardinalPizzardonotedthatin1956therewere 943ordinationsinItaly.In1959ordinationsdecreased to507andin1960theyshowedasilghtimprovementby climbingto652.
TheCardinalsaidthattokeeparatioof50,000diocesanprieststoapopulationoffiftymillionpeopleit wouldbenecessarytoordain1,250priestseveryyear, twicethetotalordainedlastyear.
TheCardinalalsonotedthatinthepastfiveyears only6,000youngmenhaveenteredtheseminariesin Italy.Heestimatedthatonly10to15percentofthese willreachordination.

TheoutlookfoilEuropeisaboutasserious,hesaid. Non-CommunistEuropetodayhasabout183million Catholics.ThereIsatotalof231,264priests,ofwhom 169,311arediocesanclergyandtheremaindermembers ofreligiousorders.
Tokeeptheratioofonepriesttoeverythousand CatholicsinEuropeitwouldbenecessarytoordain 4,500priestseachyear.In1955atotalof4,174diocesan priestswereordained.In1959Europeanordinationsof diocesanprieststotalledonly3,440.
Anotherproblemisthatin1955therewere4,174new ordinationsincomparisonto2,560deaths,butin1959 therewere3,440ordinationscomparedto3.423deaths.
Theworldpictureisnotmuchmoreencouraging,the Cardinalwenton.Forthe1.100dioceseswhichare withinthecompetenceofthecongregation,thereare 692millionpeople,ofwhom418millionareCatholics. Thereare228,653diocesanpriests.
Tomaintaintheratioofonepriestforeverythousand Catholicsthroughouttheworld,itwouldbenecessary toordain10,000newpriestsannually,whereasin1959 thetotalworldfigurefornewordinationswas5,475.
Theworldfiguresalsosufferfromthesametendency towardsabalancingoutofordinationswithdeaths.In 1955,therewere6,193newordinationsagainst3,323 deaths.Fouryearslatertherewere5.475ordinationsas against4,278deaths.
Insummingupthesestatistics,CardinalPizzardo declared:"Ifwehavepresentedthesefigurestothis assembly,itisbecauseweareconvincedprofoundly thatnoone,fortheloveoftheChurch,canhecontent withthesmallsatisfactionthatthings,perhaps,intheir ownareagowell.Itisourdutytolookatthewhole world,toprayforthewholeworldandtoworkforthe wholeworld

Vti WEWILLSHORTLYreachtheendoftheperiodfor thefulfillmentofourEasterduty,theobligationwe haveofreceivingtheBlessedEucharist atleastonceduringtheEasterseason. SincetheEasterseasonhasbeenextendedtocoverthetimefromthefirstSunday ofLentuntilTrinitySunday,noonecan saythatthisimposesanunduehardshiptoobserve thisPrecept.
TherearesixfullweeksduringLentandeight weeksfromEasteruntilTrinitySunday,whichisthe firstSundayafterPentecost.Thisperiodof14weeks isagoodquarteroftheyear.Ifanyoneisseriousat allaboutthisobligation,noproblemshouldbepresented.
Anypriestwilltestify,however,tothefactthat therewillbemanyCatholicscomingin"underthe wire."Theywillwaituntil11.59orthelastpossible momentbeforetheyareimpelledintoaction.Sowe seethewisdomoftheChurchinimposingthisserious obligation.
Therearemanypeoplewhoarenaturalproscrastinators.Thatis,theyalwaysputoffuntiltomorrow thatwhichtheycoulddotoday.Ittakesanabsolute deadlinetoshockthemintoaction.Butwhenthey flirtwiththisdeadlinetoooften,itcanhappenonly tooeasilythattheywillmissit.
Ifweconstantlyskateclosetotheedgetoseehow closewecancomewithoutgoingoff,itisinevitable soonerorlaterwewillgooff.Ifwecontinuallysee howlittleweneedtodoinorderto"getby,"itis onlytooeasynottogetbyatall.
SPIRITUAL STARVATION
THETROUBLEwithtoomanyofusisthatweare satisfiedtolivebytheminimum,Howmanytimes haveweheardsomeonesay,or perhapssaiditourselves:"I'llbe satisfiedjusttogetinsidethe doorofheaven."InsteadofwantingtobeasclosetoAlmighty Godaspossible.wesettlefortheminimum. Whenwecontinuallylivebytheminimum,werun theriskoflivingbynothingatall,or,toputitinan equallytrueway,ofnotlivingatall.
Weknowwhatwouldquicklyhappentousifwe habituallyneglectedtoeatsufficientlyandsensibly. Wewouldsoonbeundernourished.Ifthissituation prevailedforanylengthoftime,wewouldeventually bestarved.Howcarefulwearetoavoidsuchadire prospectforourbodieswhichareheretodayandgone tomorrow.
Butitisanotherstorywhereoursoulsareconcerned.Insteadofnourishingthemwiththe"daily bread"oftheEucharist,weoftendeliberatelystarve thembyfailingtotakeadvantageofwhatissoreadily availabletous.

WhatelementsinChristianityaremostattractiveto Moslems?
"Inmyexperience,"the priestanswered,"Moslems areattractedstronglybythe Wood,Cool andCoke
Gospelsandparticularlyby thedivinepersonalityof Christ. Aboveall,His gentlenessandloveattracts them.
"Thegoodexampleof Christiansattractsthem, too,especiallyChristian familylifeandsuchvirtues askindness,gentlenessand sincerity."
Hehasnotencountered anyexampleofrealdevotiontotheBlessedVirgin inIslam.Ofallthesaints, St.Theresehasthegreatest influenceoverMoslems.It isnotthattheystudyher lifeandteaching.Theyare drawn,rather,bythemarvelousfavoursobtained throughherintercession.

SomeconvertsfromIslam prefertoadopttheGreek Rite,becauseitusestheir vernacular,Arabic,Those Whohavehadcontactwith WesternEuropeansthrough travelorotherwise,will probablychoosetheLatin Rite.
Whatischieflyneededto invigoratetheapostolateto Moslems?
"First,prayer,"thepriest replied."Itissurprising howmanypeoplefailto prayfortheconversionof Moslems.It'saresultof thisdefeatestattitude "Ofcourseweneedmore priests,buttheymustknow Arabicandknowitwell. Insomecountries,however, itisdifficulttobringin morepriestsfromoutside:'

ThemindsofsomeMoslemsarealreadyprepared forChristianity,hehas found.Theyarestrongly attachedtotheideaofGod andtothewordofGod. Itisforustoshowthem thatChristianityisfrom God.

Althoughthemembersof thesepartiesaredividedon theissue,Iwouldsaythat thegrowingtendencyis towardsfavourableconsiderationofjusticeallround.
TheAustralianLabcr Partyhasvariedinitsattitude.In1951itdeclared itselfinfavouroffullfinancialsupportofallprimaryschoolswithoutdiscrimination.In1957itrepudiatedthat,adoptingapolicy ofdiscriminationagainst non-governmentschools. Thatpresentattitudecould, ofcourse,beagainreversedshouldwisercounsels eventuallyprevail.
TheDemocraticLabor Partystilladherestothe A.L.P.1951decision,insistingthattheStateshouldassumefinancialresponsibilitytortheprimaryeducationofallAustralianchildrenwithoutexception.
SuccessiveGallupPolls haveshownthatmoreand moreAustraliansareadoptingthesameattitudeonthis particularissue.Inaleadingarticle,July9,1957,the "SydneyMorningHerald" said-despiteitsuseofthe question-beggingterm"thecaseforStateaidis powerful Soonerorlater thewholeissuemaywell havetobeth:ashedout."
Certainlytheincreasing numbersofnewcomersfrom Europe,whoareamazedby thecontrastbetweenthe Australianattitudeandthat ofthecountriesfromwhich theycame,willhelpto swellthevolumeofprotestsagainstcontinuededucationalinjusticehere.
Finally,itisonethingto havetheintentionofreturningtoone'sreligion, butquiteanothertohave theopportunityofdoingso. Godhaspromisedforgivenesstoallwhosincerelyrepentoftheirsins:butnowherehasHepromisedtime torepent,sothatpeople candoanyeviltheywish, calmlytellingGodtoawait theirconvenienceandbe waitingwiththegracethey willneedwhenevertheydecidetowantit. Ifherefused-andI certainlywouldnotblame himforrefusingaftersuch treatmentatherhands-shewouldbeobligedinconsciencetoleavehimandreturntothepracticeofher religion.

InthewakeofaconferenceatPietermaritzburg,SouthAfrica,whichcalledforacomplete reversalofSouthAfrica'sracesegregationpolicies,theArchbishopofDurbanhasaskedthe nation'sreligousleaderstojoininonall-outdriveonracism.
ArchbishopDenisEHurley,O.M.I.,saidheseeks theformationofacouncil composedofwell-known Protestant.Catholic,Jewish andMoslemrepresentatives. Hisappeal,publishedinthe JohannesburgSundayTimes, wasanelaborationofone hemadeafewdaysearlier atamulti-racialmeetingat NatalUniversity.
Thatmeeting,knownas theNatalConvention,was conceivedasthefirstmove towardsanAll-South AfricaNationalConvention. Thethree-daysessittwas convenedbyDr.Edgar Brookes,headofthedepartmentofhistoryandpoliticalscienceatNatalUniversity.ArchbishopHurley playedaleadingroleinthe conference.Hedelivered theconcludingaddressand presentedthefinalreport tothe600delegateswho packedthehalloftheuniversity.
Thereportcalledforan about-faceintheracialpolicieswhichareamajor facetofSouthAfrica'sNationalistgovernment.Among thepointsthereportmade arethese:

Thereportsaidthatthe mostimportantprinciple thatemergedfromtheconventionwasthatitwasin favourofanon-racialfranchiseonacommonvoting roll.Theconventionseas unanimousindesiringanextensionofthevotetononwhitesonalllevels-parliamentary,provincialand municipal.
Thereportcitedwhatit calledafairlysharpdivision ofopiniononapplicationof theseprinciples.Someof thedelegates,itsaid,advocateduniversaladultsuffrageimmediately.Others arguedforaqualifiedfranchiseofonesortoranother asinterimmeasures.
Advocatesoflimitedsuf-
fragevoicedfearsconcerningtheconsequencesofan immediateextensionofthe votetoinexperiencedand illiteratevoters.Someexpresseddoubtsaboutthe abilityofmanySouthAfricans-bothwhiteandnonwhite-tovoteresponsibly inasituationsofulloftensionsandproblems.
Thosedemandingunivc'salsuffragefearedthata qualifiedfranchise"might simplybecomeanothersham andthequalificationsraised wheneverthenumberof non-Europeanvotersbecause toohigh."Thereportaddedthattherewasalsoa feelingthatitistoolate forcompromise.ThesituationfacingSouthAfricais suchthattheonlywayof savingthecountryfrom politicalruinisarealdemocracyinwhichallthe'inhabitantshaveavestedinterestinthegovernment,it said.
ThereportcalledforitscorporationofabillofhumanrightsintoSouthAfrica'sconstitution.Itcalled racialdiscriminationamajor sourceofconflictandsaid policyshouldbedirectedtowardsitssystematicremoval.
Whileholdingintegrated educationtobetheideal, itnotedthatsomedelegates spokeoutforgradualintegration,whileothershold forimmediateintegration. Butitsaidallheldforimmediateabolitionofcolour barsontheuniversitylevel.
Privateschoolsprovidea safeguardagainstrigidityin governmentsystems,the reportssaid,andshouldreceiveencouragementanti supportfromtheState.
ThereportsaidtheGroup AreasAct-whichprovides forsegregatedresidential areas-iswhollyunjust andshouldberepealed.
Everyeffortshouldbe madetobuildbridgesacross raciallinesthereportsaid. Itcalledforintegratedsports competitioninparticular. andspokeoutforabolishing segregationinentertainments,publictransportation andsomeplacesofworship.

Herparentswerepoor. Hermother,adevout woman,oftendiddomestic workintheINusesofthe wealthy.Herfatherwas irreligious,quarrelsome anddrankexcessively. Herpietyannoyedhim andherfamilylifewas scarredbyhishostility.
Asayoungchildshe developedaloveofthe catechismwhichstayed withherthroughherlife. Acopyofthecatechism, well-thumbed,wasfound inthepocketofherhabit afterherdeath.
Annetta,asshewas called,obeyedherparents literally.Oncewhenhelpingherfathergatherwood duringthewinter,she stayedbythecart,ashe hadtoldhertodo.even whenitbecamebitterly cold,andsherefusedshelterfrompassers-byrather
thandisobeyherfather. Anothertimesheburned abasketofcabbagesbecausehermotherhadtold hertoputtheminthefireplace,notrealisingthat thelittlegirlwouldplace themdirectlyontheburningcoalsinsteadofnear theedgeofthefire.

Sheappliedforentrance intotheLittleSistersof theHolyFamily,butwas turneddownbecauseof heryouthandlackofeducation.Shethenappliedto theInstituteoftheTeachingSistersofSt.Dorothy. DaughtersoftheSacred Heart,whosemotherhouse wasinnearbyVicenza.
TheSistersaccepted her,butsentherbackto herhometowaitafew monthsandacquirethe dowryrequiredbyallentrantsintotheinstitute. Herfatheratfirstrefused togiveanymoney,but finallyrelented.Aged16, sheenteredtheconventon April8,1905,andtookthe nameBertilla.
InOctober,1906,she wassenttothehospitalat Trevisoforpracticaltraining.Mostofherreligious lifewastospentinthat hospitalanditwasnotan easyassignment.

Latein1908shewas sentbacktoVicenzaand waspresentwhenher motherdiedofcancer.Her latherdemandedthatshe leavetheconventandreturnhometocareforhim andheryoungerbrother.
SisterBertillawastorn Letweenherconcernfor herfamilyandhervocation.Shedecidedtoremainintheconvent.
Atthetimeherfather wasangry,butinhislast :'earshebecamereconciledtotheChurchand diedinthehospitalwhere hisdaughterworked.
SisterBertillareturned toherworkinthecontagiouswardsoftheTreviso hospitaluntilcancer forcedhertobed.In1910 shewasoperatedonfor thefirsttimeforcancer. Shehadkeptthesecretof herpainandsufferingto herselfaslongasshe couldsothatshecould remainworkingwithsick children.
Whileconvalescingshe studiedtoobtainanursing degreeandpassedher examinationwithhigh marks.Oncewell,shewas transferredtothegeneral medicalwardsofthehospital,wheresheworked forfiveyears.
Heroperationhadbeen unsuccessfulinremoving
allcancerousgrowth,and throughoutherlaterlife shesufferedfromsleeplessnesshemorrhagesand weakness,butshenever complainedofherpains anddidherworkcheerfully.
Becauseaintriguesof nursesandwardmaids, SisterBertillawasremovedfromherpostas headofoneofthemedical wardsandshewasplaced underayoungernun, whomsheassistedwithout anytraceofdisappointmentorhostility.
InthefirstWorldWar theTrevisohospitalshelteredmanywoundedsoldiers.Duringbombardmentofthecity,Sister Bertillaremainedinher ward,assistingthosewho couldnotbemovedto bombshelters.
Becauseofhercourage, SisterBertillawassentto anisolationbuilding whereabout70patients whosufferedfrominfectiousdiseaseswerecared for.

In1918shewastransferredtoamilitaryhospitalatViggiu,nearComo, wheresheenduredayear ofmisery.Shebeganher workbycaringforvictims oftheSpanishfluepidemic,whichhadattacked manysoldiers.Despite greatphysicalpain,she ministeredtoherpatients nightandday. Hersuperiorbecame angrywithherforspoilingherpatients.Whena smallincidenthappenedin herwardthesuperior exaggerateditgreatlyand reprovedherbeforethe assembledcommunity.She wastransferredtothe laundry,ostensiblyfor reasonsofhealth,but apparentlybecauseher superiormistookherselflessnessanddevotionto thesickforobstinacy.

Technicalprogressoffershopeofmeetingtheworld housingcrisis,thestatementsaid,butthereisdanger ofjumpingfromthe"anarchyofindividualactivityin constructionandfinancingtoanoverlyrigidtypeof planning"thatisoftenforgetfulofthesimplehuman needsandtheemotionalandpsychologicalfactorsinvolved.

Theconcertoopenedwith Bach'sPassacagliainC Minor,transcribedfororchestrabyGoedicke.Althoughtheshortestpieceof theevening,itwasthe greatest,bothinstatureand andinperformance.FarnsworthHallexcelledindelicacyandprecition,theorchestrabeingbeautifully balanced.Atonepoint,the tromboneswereplayingso quietlythattheyseemedto shinethroughthestrings,a lovelyeffect.
Sibelius'FifthSymphony wasnotsofortunate.Apart fromtheveryendofthelast movement,whenthestaccatochordswereadmirably done,theorchestraseemed tobeplayingmilesaway fromitshomeground.Perhapsitisdifficultforsun lovingAustralianstogetthe feelingofthedarkpine forestsofFinland.
ThesecondhalfwasentirelydevotedtotheBrahms SecondPianoConcerto.Endingtheeveningwiththe concertoinsteadofthesymphonywasanovelbutwelcomechange;dhubtlessit wasduetotheBrahmsbeing themajorwork.Abbey Simonplayedthestrenuous pianopartwithcomplete

masteryandthelocalorchestra,assoofteninthe past,wasstimulatedbya greatsoloisttogiveavery goodperformance.Louis Mojzer,particularly,played thecellopartinthethird movementbeautifully.
THETUESDAYYOUTH
CONCERTprovedsomething ofacontrasttotheSubscriptionConcert.Itbegan withasuitableflourishin theformofDvorak's"Carneval"Overtureandthen wentontoasymphonic poem,"LaProcessionNocturne,"byRabaud.Thiswas getttingoffthebeatentrack innouncertainmannerfor fewofuswouldhaveeven heardofthecomposer,let alonethework.Itisa hauntinglybeautifulpiece andtheorchestraplayedit well.
ThenAbbeySimonplayed Rachmaninoff's"Rhapsody onaThemebyPaganini." Thisdisjointedsetofvariationscallsforconsiderable technicalskill,butImust confessthatitonlyhas momentsformeand,inspite ofSimon'splayingtheywere notveryfrequent. ThemainworkwasTchaikovsky'sThird,charming butbitsyandtheorchestra seemedbitsy,too,almostas thoughtheylackedinterest. Theirbestperformanceof theeveningwasheldback fortheirencore,anElgar trifle,"WildBears,"which theyplayedwithgreatzest andprecision..
