ONSunday,April16,theQueenoftheApostles ChurchinWyndhamwasopenedandblessedby HisLordshipDr.J.Jobst,D.D.,S.A.C.Therewere about120peoplepresentfortheceremony-asignificant gatheringforthetown,whichhasapermanentpopulaofonly400ofwhom80areCatholics.
Thischurchhasbeen builtbytwolaymission7 arieswhovolunteered fromMelbournetocome totheKimberleysand workfor1Tmonths.Their

HisLordship,theMostRev.J.J.Rafferty,presentstheArchbishop's ShieldforwinningplaytoLynetteRichardsoflona,MosmanPark.
12monthswerefinished whentheysawthenecessityofachurchinWyndham,andnooneavailabletobuildit.They thereforeofferedtoextend theirstayuntilthechurch andpresbyterywerecompleted. Assistedbytwonative lads,theycommencedwork lastOctober.Oneofthe ladsbecameillandtheother carriedonwiththetwomen. Thisyoungsteristobeapprenticedtooneofthe builders.
Thetwolaymissionaries gaveupgoodpositionsin Melbournetoworkinthe Kimberleysandtohave given18monthsoftheir timewithoutfinancialrecompensehasbeenagreat sacrificetooffertoGodfor themissions.Withouttheir valianteffortstheestablishmentofthechurchin Wyndhamwouldhavebeen impossible.
Anothercontributionto thefoundingofthechurch wasthatoftheGeefamily, proprietorsoftheWyndham hotel,whogaveboardand lodgingtothoseengagedon theconstructionfreeof charge. HisLordshipBishopJobst, assistedbyFatherHoesand FatherKearney,performed theceremonyofopeningand blessingat3p.m.Thechurch wascrowded,manynon-
front12to1;4to6; andaftertheNovena devotions.

Hegavethankstothose peoplealloverAustralia whoincontributingtothe Kimberleymissionhave madepossiblethepurchase ofmaterials.
FatherKearneyaddedhis thankstoeverybodyconcernedandMr.DesGee. theactingpresidentofthe WyndhamShireCouncil, expressedthepleasureof thetownsfolkinhavingthe churchestablished.
Thefirstliturgicalfunctionstobeperformedinthe newchurchweretheconfirmationbyHisLordshipof aladylatelyconvertedto theFaithandthecelebration ofEveningMassbythe Bishop,followedbyreservationoftheBlessedSacrament.

ThereportedattackonBishopFranciscoPanal Ramirez,O.F.M.Cap.,ofLaVega,wasthesecond assaultonabishopintheCaribbeancountrywithin aweek. RadioCaribe,whichhasdeclareditselftobe "anti-clericalandanti-Yankee,"saidBishopPanal andhisVicar-GeneralwereattackedintheBishop's ownSeeofLaVega.Itwasnotreportedwhether theBishoporhisVicar-General,Mgr.LuisHenriquezPerez,wereinjured.

Weknowthatallmenofgood-willmustunitewhereeverpossibletostemthetideofevilandgoforward togetherinaconstructiveway.Allthishasbeenmade cleartousbyourspiritualleaders.MoralRe-ArmamentdoesnotexplicitlyattackorrejectCatholic beliefsorpractices.Theyhaveneveratanytime shownhostilitytotheCatholicChurchandtheirattitudehasdonemuchtohealbreachesbetweenourselves andourseparatedbrethren.Byandlargetheiraim areouraimsandtheirspiritualpracticesarewell knowntous.IstherenotanyreasonwhyCatholics shouldnotjoinwiththemintimatelyinprayerand goodworks?
Noorganisationintheworldseesbetterthanthe Churchthepresentneedforunityamongstmen. Nevertheless,itishertaskbeforeGodtoseetoitthat thisunityisachievedintruthwithoutanyofthe confusionthatcomesfromerror.Becauseofher divinelyappointedmission,"Toteachallnations," thereisgiventotheChurchaspecialpowertodiscern inanymovementwhatislackingofthefulltruthrevealedbyChristandtoindicateittothefaithful.
DECISIONOFTHEHOLYSEE
Manywarningshavebeengivenbyindividualbishops totheirownfaithful,beginningwithastatementby CardinalHinsley,ArchbishopofWestminster,February11,1938.Thesewarningsweregivenofficial confirmationinthesterndirectiveissuedbytheHoly OfficeonAugust8,1951.Thisdefinitejudgmentwhich theHolySeehasseenfitto,makepublic,includesthe followingdirectives;therelevanttextbeingasfollows:
1.Itisnotfittingforeitherdiocesanorreligious priests,andmuchlessfornuns,toparticipateinthe meetingsofMoralRe-Armanent.
2.Ifexceptionalcircumstancesshouldmakesuch participationopportune,thepermissionoftheSacred CongregationoftheHolyOfficemustberequested beforehand.Thepermissionwillbegrantedonlyto learnedandexperiencedpriests.
3.Finally,itisnotfittingthatthefaithfulshould acceptpostsofresponsibilityinMoralRe-Armament andespeciallynotfittingthattheyjointheso-called policyteams.

INACOUNTRYwhereCatholicsandnonCatholicsliveasneighbours,worksideby sideinofficesandstores,andfrequently attendthesamehighschoolsandcolleges,it isinevitablethatmixedcourtshipswilloccur. 3utthosecourtshipsconterminateinCatholicmarriagesiftheCatholicsetstheproper exampleandencourageshisfriendtoexaminehisholyFaith.Thisisillustratedinthe conversionofMary
"Ihadn'tkeenbaptisedinanychurch,"related Mary,"butusuallywentwithmothertotheBaptist Church,whiledadstayedhome.IwenttoSunday schooluntilIfinishedhighschool.Astherewasbut oneCatholicfamilyinBlackshear,atownofabout 3,000,IknewvirtuallynothingabouttheCatholic religion.

ITISSIGNIFICANTthatthemanychanges thathavebeenintroducedinCatholicliturgy inrecentyears,andothersthatareconsidered inprospect,areallrecommendedfromthe pastoralpointofview.Bythatismeantthat theyarecontemplatedtocontributetothe psychologicalneedsofpeopleintheimportantbusinessofworship.
THOSEwhohavebeenattendingtheannualmeetings oftheNorthAmericanLiturgicalConferenceforthe pasttwodecadeshavedreamedofthedaywhenthe richlyrewardingexperienceofparticipatedgroupworshipofferedattheseconventionsmightbecomethe ruleeverywhere.Anditseemsthatsuchisbecoming thecase,slowly.itistrue,butnonethelesssurely.

Thatiswhythosewholivetheliturgycannothelp butbeencouragedwhenweseeagrowingresponseto whathasalwaysbeenpossible,butwhichtoomany consideredimpractical.Thereisnodoubtthatwecan makereligionthevitalrealityitmustbe.Theplaceto startisatthealtar.Thetimetostartisnow.

Jakarta:PresidentAchmedSukarnohas grantedfullrecognitiontotheCatholicUniversityofIndonesia,makingitthefirstprivateinstitutiontogainequalstatuswiththe Stateuniversities.
Withtherecognition,the CatholicUniversityisempoweredtoadministerits ownexaminationandconferitsowndegree,.Until now,itsstudentshavehad toundergoexaminationsby aspecialgovernment-appointedboardofStateuniversityprofessors.Itisone of24privateuniversities inthecountry.
TheCatholicUniversityis afederatedinstitutionwith universitycollegessituated infourdifferentcitieson theislandofJava.Ithas itsoriginsinParahiangan CollegeinBandung,founded bytheFranciscanfriarsin January,1955,andSanatha DharmaCollege,startedby theJesuitsinJogjakarta.
PresidentSukarnoannouncedgovernmentrecognitionoftheuniversity whileparticipatinginan academicfestivalatthe Jogjakartabranch.Inthe courseofhisaddresshe said:
"Ihavesomethingimportanttosay:Iherewith grantrightstothedegrees conferredbytheCatholic Universityequaltothose givenbytheStateuniverities" Aftertheapplausethat greetedhisannouncement subsided,Mr.Sukarnosaid thattwomonthsearlierhe hadbeenaskedbyArchbishopAlbertusSoegiapranata,S.JofSemarangtoaccordfullrecognitiontothe university. Hesaidhe toldtheArchbishophefirst wantedtoseetheuniversitycollegeshimself,and wouldvisitthetwofullydevelopedcollegesatBandung
andJogjakarta.Inthis way,Mr.Sukarnosaid,he wasabletoascertainthe truenationalspiritofthe studentsoftheCatholicUniversityandthuswasable tograntrecognition.

ParahianganCollegeat Bandunghasschoolsoflaw. economicsandtechnology.It hasatotalof1,550students initsthieedepartment:. SanathaDharmaCollegeat Jogjakartaislimitedtoa schoolofeducationandhas 660students.
Twootheruniversitycollegeswereopenedlastyeas. OneisWidyamandalaCollege,aschoolofeducation atMacliun.with200students.TheotherisAtinejays,locatedhereinthe capitalatJakarta.Atmnjaysstartedwith150studentsinitstwodepartments-economicsandpoliticalandsocialscience. Insidethecryptwerefoundtheremainsofayoung girlandaglassvial,believedatthattimetohavebeen placedinthegraveofamartyrcontainingbloodhe orshehadshed.Onthebasisofthesefindsitwas concludedthatthecryptheldtheremainsofavirgin martyrnamedPhilomena.
HerremainsweretakentothechurchatMugnano delCardinalenearNapleswhichquicklybecameaplace ofgreatdevotion.
Inthemeantime,however,criticalresearchonthe history,functionandcontentsofthecatacombswas begunbyanumberofCatholicarcheologis4.
Fromaboutthefifthcenturyonithadbeenbelieved thatthecatacombsweregraveyardsofthemartyrs andthateveryoneburiedtherehadshedhisorher bloodfortheFaith.
Specialvenerationforthethousandsofunknown personsentombedinthecatacombssprangup,reachingitsclimaxinthe16thand17centuries.
Alltheremainsfoundinthecatacombsbecame knownasthe"corpisanti"orthecollectivebodyof thesaints.Itbecameapiouspracticetoenterthe catacombsandcarryawayfragmentstobeenshrined asrelicsoftheearlymartyrs.Sogreatdidtheinvasionofthecatacombsbecomethatinthe13thcentury PopeGregoryIXorderedthemplacedunderaspecial commissionanddecreedthatthefragmentstakenfrom thembeplacedinthecareofthecardinal-vicarof Rome.
Modernresearchhasrevealedthattheseso-called "corpisanti"werenotnecessarilymartyrsorsaints, butinsteadthattheywerepersonswhodiedinthe firstthreeChristiancenturies.
TheremainsofthepersonidentifiedasSt.Philomenain1802waspartofthe"corpisanti."

THEQUESTIONOFTENUREOFOFFICE.-The formerruleoftheSociety ofindefiniteperiodofoffice forpresidentswasreplaced byunanimousdecisionof theEastermeetingthat "PresidentsofCouncils, ConferencesandSpecial Worksshallholdofficefor atermnotexceedingfive years,butmaybereappointedfora'furtherthreeyears providedthat,inspecialand exceptionalcircumstances, theMetropolitanCentral Council(orSuperiorCouncil)mayauthoriseanextensionoftheoffice."
Inexplanationofthis change,thePresidentpointedouttothemembersthat, inkeepingwiththeChurch's desiretoalwaysbeabreast ofconditions,theSociety's Councilhaddeemeditwise tomakeprovisionforthe introductionoffreshand energeticoutlookintheconductofitsaffairs.This changewasinagreement withtheauthorisationofthe CouncilGeneralinParisfor experimentationandwas similartoprocedurefollowedbyIrelandandEngland andnowbeingintroducedin America.
TheRulestillprovidedfor retirementofapresident unequaltothetaskimposed onhimandtheSuperior Councilstressedtheeverpresentneedtobeguidedby thespiritoftheRule.

Extensivediscussionensued ontheoroposalthatwomen's conferencesberecommendedforacceptancetothe CouncilGeneralinParisfor aggregationandthatmeans beexploredforsimilaraffiliationofthealreadyevistingLadies'SocietyofSt. VincentdePaul,whose headquartersareatBologna, Italy.
Theoutcomeofcloseenquiryanddiscussionwas fortheappointmentofa committeeofinvestigation tomakeasurveyandwork outaformulaforfurther consideration.

Inonecornerofthi,great cathedralitwasnoticedthat thesewallswhicharecompletelycoveredwithicons ofChrist,HisMother,and Hissaints,arebeingcoated withnewfrescoeswhich consistofnothingbut Ukrainianfloraldesigns.
Thisisobviouslythefirst steptoconvertingthecathedralintoamuseumoffolk art,andwipingoutalltrace ofareligiousheritageinart.

Becausewewerealarge numbertravellingintheoff seasonwhentherewerefew tourists,wewereableto seethingswhichwereunusual.Wepersistentlyrequestedtoseechurchesand monasteries,tomaketheacquaintanceofbelievers,to meetthemonksandpriests, todiscussreligiousmatters openlyattheuniversities, andeventorequestanaudiencewiththeRussianOrthodoxPatriarchofMoscow.
Mostofourrequestswere granted.Avisitwiththe Patriarchwasarranged,but hisassistanttoldusthe Patriarchwastootiredfrom Easterceremoniestosee anyone. WevisitedLvov,Kiev, MoscowandLeningrad, thoughnotallofuswent toLeningrad. Inevery churchweenteredwewere regardedasjustanother touristgroup,orasanother groupofinquisitiveyoung communistswhichoneso frequentlyseesingreatOrthodoxchurches.
Wecrossedourselvesin theOrthodoxway,kissed theholyiconsoftheVirgin andtheSaviour,andveneratedtherelicsofthean dentsaintsofRussiawhereeverthesewerefound.

sawthesethings,wewere welcomedwithtraditional Russianwarmth.TheyembracedustearfullyasbrothersinChrist. Oftenwe wouldgiveaholycarddepictingaRussianiconof OurLadyofVladimiror someotherfamousimage, andimmediatelywewould besurroundedbyabandof womenbeggingforsuch animage,tearfullykissing itoncetheyreceivedit,and almosthystericalwithjoy, bowingtothegroundto thanktheHolyMotherof Godforthismiracle.
