ONSunday,April16,theQueenoftheApostles ChurchinWyndhamwasopenedandblessedby HisLordshipDr.J.Jobst,D.D.,S.A.C.Therewere about120peoplepresentfortheceremony-asignificant gatheringforthetown,whichhasapermanentpopulaofonly400ofwhom80areCatholics.

Thischurchhasbeen builtbytwolaymission7 arieswhovolunteered fromMelbournetocome totheKimberleysand workfor1Tmonths.Their

HisLordship,theMostRev.J.J.Rafferty,presentstheArchbishop's ShieldforwinningplaytoLynetteRichardsoflona,MosmanPark.

12monthswerefinished whentheysawthenecessityofachurchinWyndham,andnooneavailabletobuildit.They thereforeofferedtoextend theirstayuntilthechurch andpresbyterywerecompleted. Assistedbytwonative lads,theycommencedwork lastOctober.Oneofthe ladsbecameillandtheother carriedonwiththetwomen. Thisyoungsteristobeapprenticedtooneofthe builders.

Thetwolaymissionaries gaveupgoodpositionsin Melbournetoworkinthe Kimberleysandtohave given18monthsoftheir timewithoutfinancialrecompensehasbeenagreat sacrificetooffertoGodfor themissions.Withouttheir valianteffortstheestablishmentofthechurchin Wyndhamwouldhavebeen impossible.

Anothercontributionto thefoundingofthechurch wasthatoftheGeefamily, proprietorsoftheWyndham hotel,whogaveboardand lodgingtothoseengagedon theconstructionfreeof charge. HisLordshipBishopJobst, assistedbyFatherHoesand FatherKearney,performed theceremonyofopeningand blessingat3p.m.Thechurch wascrowded,manynon-

front12to1;4to6; andaftertheNovena devotions.

Afterwardsthepeople gatheredaroundthepresbytery,theverandahofwhich servedasadais.HisLordshipthankedallwhohad beenassociatedwiththe constructionofthechurch andpresbyteryandstressed thenewprivilegeawarded tothepeopleofWyndham byhavingtheBlessed Sacramentintheirmidst. Thechurch,hesaid,would nowbethespiritualcentre oftheparishfrontwhich wouldflowmanygracesto thetownandsurroundings. Hegavethankstothose peoplealloverAustralia whoincontributingtothe Kimberleymissionhave madepossiblethepurchase ofmaterials.

FatherKearneyaddedhis thankstoeverybodyconcernedandMr.DesGee. theactingpresidentofthe WyndhamShireCouncil, expressedthepleasureof thetownsfolkinhavingthe churchestablished.

Thefirstliturgicalfunctionstobeperformedinthe newchurchweretheconfirmationbyHisLordshipof aladylatelyconvertedto theFaithandthecelebration ofEveningMassbythe Bishop,followedbyreservationoftheBlessedSacrament.

Averywell-knownBritishCommunist,wholeftthe PartytoembracetheFaith,oncestatedthatnoone knowshowmuchinneragonyaCommunistsuffers. Consciencecanbedulledoritcanbedrugged,buteven whenitdoesnotmakeaconsciouswarning,itneverthelessproducesindirectlyeithermentalorphysical effectsonaguiltyperson.Itisverymuchlikeatube oftoothpaste.Ifthecapiskepton,andthetubeis pressed,oneneverknowsatwhatpointthetoothpaste willcomeoutunderpressure.

Soitiswiththehumanmind.Whentheguiltinthe conscienceisrecognised,thereisanormaloutlet throughconfessiontoGodandtheseekingforpardon. When,hotvever,theDivineoutletisdenied,whenits useisspurned,orwhenguiltisdenied,thenthe pressuresoflifecausetheconsciencetobreakoutin abnormalmanifestationsofguilt.Anabnormalmanifestationofguiltdoesnotmeanthatattherootofitall wasneveranormalguilt.Psychologistsgowrongin thinkingthattheabnormalmanifestationsprovethat thereisnomoralorrealguilt.Itistoberemembered thattherewouldbenocounterfeitmoney,iftherewere norealmoney.

Verylittlewritingandverylittlepreachingisdirected todaytotheprickingofconscience,suchasthesermon ofPeteronPentecost.Heinsertedintheconscienceof hisaudiencethestingofintolerableself-accusation.The immediateeffectofthesermonofPeterwastomakethe multitudeaskhimwhattheyshoulddo;theysought

criminalswellstated:"Ineverypersonisthat amantrytodeceivehimself,lietohimself upagainsttheshellofhisbody,thumpingon skulluntilhisheadachesandhewisheshe reliefoutsideofthemselves.Whenamaniswounded witha'barbedarrow,hetossesaboutinpain;veryoften themorehestrivestoreleasetheweaponfromhisflesh. themoreitbecomesentangledinthesinews,thewound enlargedandthetortureincreased.

Thereismanyapersontodaysufferingfromhidden andunrevealedguiltwhichhetriestopluckoutofhimselfbysomepsychologicalself-helps,orthroughtheaid ofmentaldo-it-yourselfkits;buttheinflamingwounds onlyincreasedespair.ItisonlytheDivinePhysician Whoknowshowtorelievethepainwithouttearingand festeringthespirit.Actually,itisthesamehandthat droveinthearrowofuneasinessthatplucksitout. RetaliationByAnti-Clerics

A67-YEAR-OLDBishophasbeenattackedby amobintheDominicanRepublic,according tothatcountry'sgovernment-controlledRadio Caribe.

ThereportedattackonBishopFranciscoPanal Ramirez,O.F.M.Cap.,ofLaVega,wasthesecond assaultonabishopintheCaribbeancountrywithin aweek. RadioCaribe,whichhasdeclareditselftobe "anti-clericalandanti-Yankee,"saidBishopPanal andhisVicar-GeneralwereattackedintheBishop's ownSeeofLaVega.Itwasnotreportedwhether theBishoporhisVicar-General,Mgr.LuisHenriquezPerez,wereinjured.

Accordingtothebroadcast,theangrycrowdthat assaultedtheBishopalsodemandedtheexpulsion ofBishopThomasReilly,C.SS.R.,Ordinaryofthe independentprelatureofSanJuandelaMaguana.

ItwasBishopReillywhowasthetargetofa government-organisedattackthepreviousweek. Hishousewassackedandhewasstruckbystones. TheresidenceofhispriestsinSanJuandela Mgguanawassackedthesameday.

BothBishopshavebeenoutspokencriticsof repressionsandpersecutionsintheDominican Republic.Bothhavebeenharassedbygovernment authoritiesandbothhavebeenopenlythreatened withviolenceoverRadioCaribe.

BishopCorneliusLuceyalsoasserted

themenaceofcommunismthattheConnollyAssociationforIrishimmigrantsinEnglandisacommunistfront.

BishopLuceysaidthatboththecommunistparty oftheIrishRepublicandthatofNorthernIreland attendedaworld-widecommunistconferenceatMoscowlastNovember.

He"said'theRepublic'scommunistparty,whichcalls itselftheIrishWorkers'League,shouldnotbeunderestimatedbecauseofitstinysizesince'Ashcommunistsdonotexpecttoachievepowerthroughpopularvotebutthroughstratagem.

BishopLuceysaidIrishimmigrantsinEngland whojointheConnollyAssociationinEnglandarenot tolditisacommunistorganisation.Hesaidtheymust firstbeconditionedandindoctrinatedbeforethe association'srealpurposeisrevealedtothem.

TheConnollyAssociation,hesaid,purportsto.work forthecauseofIrishnationalism,thereformofcon:, ditionsinIreland,andthewelfareoftheimmigrants themselves.Butheassertedthattheseobjectivesare sham,andmerebaittocatchunsuspectingIrishimmigrants.

"Theveryreticenceoftheassociationaboutthe kindofsocialandpoliticalsystemitproposestosubstituteforourpresentsystemisitselfamatterfor suspicion,"BishopLuceysaid.

"Butmoretangibleevidencehasbeenadduced.For instance,severaloftheleadingmembersoftheassociationhaveappearedoncommunistplatformsand lecturedatcommunistcentres.Theassociationhas faithfullyfollowedthecommunistlineinallmajor issuesdividingEastandWest."

TheConnollyAssociationtakesit,snamefromJames Connolly,anIrishMarxistlabourleaderwhotool: partinthe1916EasterrebellionandwhowasreconciledtotheCatholicChurchbeforehisexecutionby theBritish.

TheBishophadawordofcaution."Weshouldof coursebeslowtolabelpeoplecommunists-though notprudentlytosuspectthem,"hesaid."Thata personisamilitanttradeunionist,oranagitator,or hasgivenupthepracticeofhisreligion,isnotsufficientreasonforlabellinghimacommunist.Tobea realcommunist,apersonmustsupportthepartyline throughthickandthin."

LetusseefirstlywhatMoralRe-Armament,or "M.R.A."asitispopularlyreferredto,hastosayof itself.M.R.A.isanorganisation"towhichbelong peopleofeverysocialclass,ofeveryprofessionand trade,membersofeveryreligiousconfessionandpeople fromeverynation,whohavingabandonedtheirlives toGod,letthemselvesbeguidedbytheHolySpiritin ordertoputtheirlivesinperfectaccordwithChristianity,andwhoforcethemselvestoconquerandwin asmanyadherentsaspossibletosuchabelief."(InitiationauRearmementMoral,ServicedesPublictionsdu RearmementMoral,CauxsurMontreux,Juin,1950.)

InspiteofitsclaimthatM.R.A."isnoreligionand hasnodoctrines"and"TheGrouphasnoteachings," itactuallyisareligiousorganisation,itsmembers havingadefinitephilosophyofreligion,andperforming certaindefinitereligiousacts.

MoralRe-Armamentsetsouttogivemenamoral ideologyasanewbasisforindividualandunited action.Itisdetermined,initsoppositiontotheCommunistsystem.Itsmembersareonthewholeexceptionallygoodpeople,professingnobleaims,capable ofmuchself-sacrifice,andwhoseskillintheirwork anddevotiontoithavebornegreatfruit.NoCatholic canfailtoadmirethequalitiesofthoseengagedin thisworkortowishthemallsuccessintheirown sphere.Theproblemistodefinetherelationshipof theChurchtothemovementandinthismatterthere hasbeennolackofguidancefromecclesiastical authority.

THECHURCH'STEACHING

Weknowthatallmenofgood-willmustunitewhereeverpossibletostemthetideofevilandgoforward togetherinaconstructiveway.Allthishasbeenmade cleartousbyourspiritualleaders.MoralRe-ArmamentdoesnotexplicitlyattackorrejectCatholic beliefsorpractices.Theyhaveneveratanytime shownhostilitytotheCatholicChurchandtheirattitudehasdonemuchtohealbreachesbetweenourselves andourseparatedbrethren.Byandlargetheiraim areouraimsandtheirspiritualpracticesarewell knowntous.IstherenotanyreasonwhyCatholics shouldnotjoinwiththemintimatelyinprayerand goodworks?

Noorganisationintheworldseesbetterthanthe Churchthepresentneedforunityamongstmen. Nevertheless,itishertaskbeforeGodtoseetoitthat thisunityisachievedintruthwithoutanyofthe confusionthatcomesfromerror.Becauseofher divinelyappointedmission,"Toteachallnations," thereisgiventotheChurchaspecialpowertodiscern inanymovementwhatislackingofthefulltruthrevealedbyChristandtoindicateittothefaithful.

DECISIONOFTHEHOLYSEE

Manywarningshavebeengivenbyindividualbishops totheirownfaithful,beginningwithastatementby CardinalHinsley,ArchbishopofWestminster,February11,1938.Thesewarningsweregivenofficial confirmationinthesterndirectiveissuedbytheHoly OfficeonAugust8,1951.Thisdefinitejudgmentwhich theHolySeehasseenfitto,makepublic,includesthe followingdirectives;therelevanttextbeingasfollows:

1.Itisnotfittingforeitherdiocesanorreligious priests,andmuchlessfornuns,toparticipateinthe meetingsofMoralRe-Armanent.

2.Ifexceptionalcircumstancesshouldmakesuch participationopportune,thepermissionoftheSacred CongregationoftheHolyOfficemustberequested beforehand.Thepermissionwillbegrantedonlyto learnedandexperiencedpriests.

3.Finally,itisnotfittingthatthefaithfulshould acceptpostsofresponsibilityinMoralRe-Armament andespeciallynotfittingthattheyjointheso-called policyteams.

CardinalPizzardo,thenSecretaryoftheHolyOffice, hasstatedthatMoralRe-Armamentis"amovement whichpossessesneitherthepatrimonyofspiritual life,northesupernaturalmeansofgracewhichthe CatholicChurchhas."Hefurthersays"Thatthe dangerofsyncretism(compromiseofreligiousprinciple's)andofreligiousindifference,ofwhichwarnings havebeengivenonMoral'Re-Armament,cannolonger beignored."

THOSEwhohavebeenattendingtheannualmeetings oftheNorthAmericanLiturgicalConferenceforthe pasttwodecadeshavedreamedofthedaywhenthe richlyrewardingexperienceofparticipatedgroupworshipofferedattheseconventionsmightbecomethe ruleeverywhere.Anditseemsthatsuchisbecoming thecase,slowly.itistrue,butnonethelesssurely.

Jakarta:PresidentAchmedSukarnohas grantedfullrecognitiontotheCatholicUniversityofIndonesia,makingitthefirstprivateinstitutiontogainequalstatuswiththe Stateuniversities.

Withtherecognition,the CatholicUniversityisempoweredtoadministerits ownexaminationandconferitsowndegree,.Until now,itsstudentshavehad toundergoexaminationsby aspecialgovernment-appointedboardofStateuniversityprofessors.Itisone of24privateuniversities inthecountry.

ThedecisionoftheSacredCongregationofRitesto removeherfeastfromallcalendarsthroughoutthe worldwasmadeinstrictadherencetohistorical accuracyandthedesiretokeepthevenerationofthe saintsasfreefromerroraspossible.

TheCongregationofRiteshasnotofficiallydeclared thatPhilomenaisnotasaint.Butitsdecisionmakes itclearthatshecannotbeprovedtobeasaintand thatthereforetheChurchcannotholdherupforyen-

Ifanyonehaseverbeenthesubjectofconfusion,it istheformerSt.Philomena.Firstofall,thereare twoPhilomenas.Onewasavirginwhoislistedinthe RomanMartyrology,ahistoricallistofearlysaints datingtothefifthcentury.Nothingisknownofthis saintexcepthername.HerfeastisJuly5.

AsforthePhilomenawhosefeasthasbeencancelled,shefirstcametolightin1802whenacryptin thecatacombsofSt.Priscillawasdiscovered.The cryptwascoveredwiththreetileswhichhadwriting onthem.Althoughoutoforderwhentheywere discovered,theywererearrangedtospellout"FilumenaPaxTecum"or"Peacebewithyou,Philomena."

Atthetimethatthecryptwasdiscoveredthefact thatthetileswereoutoforderwasnotconsidered important.Butlaterthisfactbecameveryimportant.

Insidethecryptwerefoundtheremainsofayoung girlandaglassvial,believedatthattimetohavebeen placedinthegraveofamartyrcontainingbloodhe orshehadshed.Onthebasisofthesefindsitwas concludedthatthecryptheldtheremainsofavirgin martyrnamedPhilomena.

HerremainsweretakentothechurchatMugnano delCardinalenearNapleswhichquicklybecameaplace ofgreatdevotion.

Inthemeantime,however,criticalresearchonthe history,functionandcontentsofthecatacombswas begunbyanumberofCatholicarcheologis4.

Fromaboutthefifthcenturyonithadbeenbelieved thatthecatacombsweregraveyardsofthemartyrs andthateveryoneburiedtherehadshedhisorher bloodfortheFaith.

Specialvenerationforthethousandsofunknown personsentombedinthecatacombssprangup,reachingitsclimaxinthe16thand17centuries.

Alltheremainsfoundinthecatacombsbecame knownasthe"corpisanti"orthecollectivebodyof thesaints.Itbecameapiouspracticetoenterthe catacombsandcarryawayfragmentstobeenshrined asrelicsoftheearlymartyrs.Sogreatdidtheinvasionofthecatacombsbecomethatinthe13thcentury PopeGregoryIXorderedthemplacedunderaspecial commissionanddecreedthatthefragmentstakenfrom thembeplacedinthecareofthecardinal-vicarof Rome.

Modernresearchhasrevealedthattheseso-called "corpisanti"werenotnecessarilymartyrsorsaints, butinsteadthattheywerepersonswhodiedinthe firstthreeChristiancenturies.

TheremainsofthepersonidentifiedasSt.Philomenain1802waspartofthe"corpisanti."

Allthisresearchwascarriedoutinthelasthalf ofthe19thcenturyandby1911theCatholicEncyclopediapublishedanarticleonPhilomenastrongly questioningherauthenticity.

Duringthe20thcenturytheCongregationofRites hasmaintainedanhistoricalsectiondedicatedtoinvestigatingandcorrectingliturgicalbooksandthelist ofthesaints.Itisasaresultofthoseinvestigations thatithasbeendecidedthatitisbesttoremovePhilomenafromliturgicalcalendars.

Asaresult,venerationofthisPhilomenaistobe halted.ButspokesmenfortheCongregationofRites stresstheneedforslownessandconcernforthepious

Assome'oftheleaders hadrecentlyattendedaRetreatWeekendatMarian Lodge,atwhichthissame topicwasdiscussed,they wereabletoimparttothe othergirls,themanypoints theyhadgainedfromtalks given. THEQUESTIONOFTENUREOFOFFICE.-The formerruleoftheSociety ofindefiniteperiodofoffice forpresidentswasreplaced byunanimousdecisionof theEastermeetingthat "PresidentsofCouncils, ConferencesandSpecial Worksshallholdofficefor atermnotexceedingfive years,butmaybereappointedfora'furtherthreeyears providedthat,inspecialand exceptionalcircumstances, theMetropolitanCentral Council(orSuperiorCouncil)mayauthoriseanextensionoftheoffice."

Inexplanationofthis change,thePresidentpointedouttothemembersthat, inkeepingwiththeChurch's desiretoalwaysbeabreast ofconditions,theSociety's Councilhaddeemeditwise tomakeprovisionforthe introductionoffreshand energeticoutlookintheconductofitsaffairs.This changewasinagreement withtheauthorisationofthe CouncilGeneralinParisfor experimentationandwas similartoprocedurefollowedbyIrelandandEngland andnowbeingintroducedin America.

InthecourseofhisremarksHisLordshipexpressedhissatisfactionthatthe DramaFestivalforCatholicschools,adreamofmany years,hadatlastmaterialised,,andpaidtributeto theTherrySocietyforthe courageandinitiativeshown infacingthedifficulttask oforganisingsuchaFestival,andcongratulatedthe societyontheefficientand expertmannerinwhichit hadbeenconducted. Agroupof79CatholiccollegestudentsfromNewYorkrecently journeyedthroughWesternRussiabyrailandair.JosephM.Curran,oneofthestudents,givesanaccountoftheirimpressionsof religionintheSovietUnion.

InKiev,capitalofthe Ukraine,wewenttothe beautifulOrthodoxCathedralofSt.Vladimirfor Easterservices.Thechurch wascrowded.Usuallyinthe SovietUnionchurchcrowds aremadeupofoldwomen andmen,butthisnightalot ofyoungpeopleshowedup. Theyweremembersofthe YoungCommunistLeague, orKomsomol.

IntheformerPolishcity ofLvov,nowpartofthe SovietUkraine,ourSoviet guidesshowedusabeautifulwarmemorialtoSoviet soldierswhofreedthecity.

Onestudent,however, foundacemeterywhere Polish,Americanandother Alliedsoldierswhodied thereinWorldWarIhad beenburiedwithgreat honour.

Thestudent,Charles Hartmansaidthestoneshad beenoverturnedorcovered withobscenitiesinUkrainian,statuesweresmashed orpockmarkedbybullets.

Thegrassinthatpartof thecemeterywasmulched withgarbageandtincans.

Itwasnotunusualtosee womenblessthemselvesas theypassedanabandoned churchinLvovorKiev. Somewouldevenkissthe wallsoftheone-timehouse ofprayer.Wherechurches havebeenturnedintomuseums,peoplecametopray inthemuseums.

Thefamousmonastery churchofSt.SophiainKiev, whoseglisteninggolddomes dominatetheskyline.is "beingrestored."Agroup ofexpertsisengagedinan arduoustaskofphotographingthewallsandthenstrippingoffthefrescoeslayer bylayertorevealtheearliestreligiousartofthe Ukraine.

Inonecornerofthi,great cathedralitwasnoticedthat thesewallswhicharecompletelycoveredwithicons ofChrist,HisMother,and Hissaints,arebeingcoated withnewfrescoeswhich consistofnothingbut Ukrainianfloraldesigns.

Thisisobviouslythefirst steptoconvertingthecathedralintoamuseumoffolk art,andwipingoutalltrace ofareligiousheritageinart.

Becausewewerealarge numbertravellingintheoff seasonwhentherewerefew tourists,wewereableto seethingswhichwereunusual.Wepersistentlyrequestedtoseechurchesand monasteries,tomaketheacquaintanceofbelievers,to meetthemonksandpriests, todiscussreligiousmatters openlyattheuniversities, andeventorequestanaudiencewiththeRussianOrthodoxPatriarchofMoscow.

Mostofourrequestswere granted.Avisitwiththe Patriarchwasarranged,but hisassistanttoldusthe Patriarchwastootiredfrom Easterceremoniestosee anyone. WevisitedLvov,Kiev, MoscowandLeningrad, thoughnotallofuswent toLeningrad. Inevery churchweenteredwewere regardedasjustanother touristgroup,orasanother groupofinquisitiveyoung communistswhichoneso frequentlyseesingreatOrthodoxchurches.

Wecrossedourselvesin theOrthodoxway,kissed theholyiconsoftheVirgin andtheSaviour,andveneratedtherelicsofthean dentsaintsofRussiawhereeverthesewerefound.

Assoonasthebelievers

sawthesethings,wewere welcomedwithtraditional Russianwarmth.TheyembracedustearfullyasbrothersinChrist. Oftenwe wouldgiveaholycarddepictingaRussianiconof OurLadyofVladimiror someotherfamousimage, andimmediatelywewould besurroundedbyabandof womenbeggingforsuch animage,tearfullykissing itoncetheyreceivedit,and almosthystericalwithjoy, bowingtothegroundto thanktheHolyMotherof Godforthismiracle. Thiscouldbefound everywhereinRussiaamong theold,andsometimes, thoughveryrarely,among theyoung. Thoseyearshavewitnessedsteadygrowthtofull SecondarySchoolstatus. ThereisevidenceinabundancethatC.B.H.S.has succeededasaCatholic College.ReligiousVocations havebeennumerousand therearemanyexcellent OldBoysworkingforGod intheWestandinother States.TheactiveCatholicismofthepresentboys mustsurelyindicatethat thereareseveralVocations incourseofdevelopment. Likewise,successofHighgateboysinPublicExaminationsatschoolandintheir coursesattheUniversity isnowtraditional.

Withaviewtowardsplanningfunctionstomarkthe JubileeandformingaCommitteetoorganisethese plans,thePrincipal,Br.H.
