NO"OLD"PEOPLEEVERENTERTHEKINGDOMOFHEAVEN.WehoveDivinewarrant forthisstatement,thoughitwasnotputexactlyinthesewords.WhentheSonofGodcame tothisearthHesaid:"Unlessyoubecomeasalittlechild,youcannotentertheKingdomof Heaven."Hedidnotmeanthatwehadtobechildish,butwehadbechildlike.Whatare thequalitiesofachildessentialforanadultacquiringtheeternalyouthfulnessofHeaven?

THEfirstcharacteristicofachildisthathebathes intheinfiniteandtheeternal.Thepresentis thoughtbyhimtobeenduring.Hecannotunderstandthepast;therefore,deathisbeyondhiscomprehension.Hecannotunderstandwhatisyettobe,or thingsotherwisethantheyactuallyare.Impermanence escapesthechildcompletely.Perhaps,oneofthe reasonswhyachildfeelssosorrowfulwhenthemother leavesthehouse,isbecauseheeternalisesherabsence. Ithasbeensaidthatdogshaveexactlythesamesense oftotallosswhenthemasterleavesthem.

Thechildisavoyagerwithoutanybaggage.Helives inthepresentacidimaginesittobeeternal.Hecan mountabroomstickandimaginehimselftobetheking ofinfinitespace.Nodollisaragtoalittlegirl:itis fleshandblood.Beanstalksactuallyclimbtothe heavens.Itisonlyastheyearspassoftandwiththem thesenseofeternitythatthechildbecomesimpressed withtransition,whichunderliesallcreation.Froma psychologicalpointofview,therefore,thesmallerbecomestheworldaswegrowolder.Asanadultloses hissenseofeternity,hebecomescaughtinakindof whirlpoolinwhichhisegoisdrawncloserandcloser intohimselfuntilhefinallyisimprisonedinhisown selfishness.

Thesecondcharacteristicofthechildisinnocence.

Thechildhardlyperceivesdisorderorevil,oratleast doesnotremarkuponthemassuch.Whateverexists forthechildisgoodandalsotrue.Theinnocenceof thechildisdirectlyrelatedtothereligioussentiments whichhasitsstartingpointinfilialsentimentsorlove fortheparents.Untiltheageofsix,thereisan admirationfortheparentswhichiswithoutlimit.He attributestothemomniscience,power,goodnessand truth.Hecannotimagineanyfatherintheworldbeing strongerthanhisfather,noranymotherbeingbetter thanhismother.Itisnotdifficultlaterontotranslate theseattributesintotheirsource,whichisGodHimself.

Thereisatremendousreceptivityforthetruthsofreligion,thoughatthisageitisnotnecessarytogive thereasonforthesetruths.Theteachingofreligionis verymuchliketheteachingofcleanlinesstochildren. Weteachthemthehabitsofcleanliness,andthenonly

Vientiane,Laos:Thefutureforreligionin sunnyLaoswillbedarklymenacedifacoalitiongovernmentwithstrongPathetLao elementsisformedhere.

Thatisclearfromthe experienceinSamneuaprovincefromwhichallpriests wereobligedtofleelastOctoberafteronemonthof PathetLaorule.Christianswereintimidatedand warnednottogotochurch andtoshunpriests.The priests'housewasvisited twicedailyandsometimes oftenerbypatrols.When thepriestsheardtheywere goingtobearrestedthey escapedfromtown.

Phongsalyprovince,also heldbyPathetLao,has neverhadaresidentpriest. Nowitisimpossibleforany priesttovisitit. EarlierexperienceselsewhereinLaosshoweda similartrend.-AtChristmas of1959FatherDubroux,a Parismissionary,wasslain. FatherMarioBorzaga,an ItalianOblate,disappeared inPathetLaohandslast May. PathetLaoforbidpeople tocallthemcommunistsbut theirlinkwiththecommunistVietninh-nowcalled

Vietcong-acrosstheborderinNorthVietnamisunquestionable.SomeVietnamesecadres(Communist partyspecialistsarewith them.Itisbelievedthat PathetLaotroopsre-entered SamneualastAugustor SeptemberfromNorthVietnam,wheretheyhadwithdrawntoreorganisein1959. AlreadyPathetLaoisreportedholdinga"people's court"ontheChinesecommunistpatterninonearea. Communistdelayinacceptingceasefireproposals isregardedhereasmeaningtheyseektoobtaina dominantmilitaryposition first.

AcoalitionLaotiangovernmentinwhichcommunistswouldholdkeyposts wouldnotbe"neutralist." Neighbouringcountries,especiallyThailand,would soonfeelitsnon-neutraleffects.ThedangertoSouth Vietnamwhereguerrila fightingissaidtobeworse thanthecurrentconflictin Laoswouldgrow.

DoctorSullivan'swordsareclearandconciseintheir meaningandmeritthecloseconsiderationofeverybody. FortoolongAustralianshavethoughtintermsof separateStates-EastandWest,NorthandSouthratherthanofthewhole,theNation.Thereisnoroom todayforinsularityofthoughtinregardtothestatusof allofus-ourgreatestloyaltymustbelongtothe nation,sothatinthemomentsofneedthatloyaltyneed neverbequestioned.

Greatdangersareabroadintheworldtoday.They threatenthelibertiesofoursmallerneighbours,they areaconstantthreattothenationalfreedomofour country.Communism,nationalism"gonewrong,"revolution,subversion,betrayal(practicallyallengineered bythefirst-namedevil)aretheveryrealdifficulties facingtheworld-andAustraliahastheindispensable taskofassistingintheresistancetothegreatthreats topeaceintheworld.

Turningfromthewideraspectsofworldpoliticsand consideringtheindividual,whatpartmustthemanin thestreetplayinresolvingthegraveissuesoftheday? Itispurefollyforustomerelyperformourroutine functionsinlifemoreorlesswell-andtoexpectprotectionfromouterevils.GodhasguaranteedHishelp onlytothosewhohelpthemselves.

Letustakeuparms-TheArmsofPeace,whichare prayerandservingGodineveryway.Whereverevil threatens,wemustfaceitwiththeseArmsofPeaceinpolitics,intheunions,inthemovements,the societies,theagenciesofhumanthoughtandexpression, whereverCommunismseekstoundermineandsubvert, lettheweaponsofChristbeusedto.triumph.Itissaid thatthepriceoffreedomiseternalvigilance.Never morethantodayisthatvigilance-andmore-required topreserveourliberties,forCommunismiseverywhere onthemarchandnovictoryistoosmallnottobe assiduouslyworkedfor.Byevenmorediligencein defencewemaydefeattheevilthatgnawsatthevitals offreenations.

Greatwealthwasflowing intoW.A.fromthegoldfields;inPerthnewbuildingswererisingrapidlyand inthepalaceoftheCatholicBishopofPerth,Dr. Gibneywasconfrontedwith amultitudeofnewsocial problemsconsequentonthis rapidgrowthofpopulation.

Foremostamonstthem,he placedtheproblemofyouth.

Dr.Gibney,whowasever thefriendoftheorphan andtheoppressed,maybe regardedastheSt.John BoscoofW.A.Hefounded in1876,atSubiacothefirst orphanageinthisState,and placedtheboysandgirls inpoorcircumstance,under thecareoftheSistersof Mercy.

After21yearsofdevoted workfororphansandother neglectedchildren,theSisters,attherequestofHis Lordship,handedove:the 81boysthenundertheir careatSubiacotothetuitionandcareofRev.Bro. L.Ryanwhobecamethe firstsuperioronNovember 23rd,1897atSubiaco.

Beforemakingthedecisiontopurchasethepresent glorioussiteonthebanks ofthetidalCanningRiver, about15milesfromPerth inthosedays,butnowonly 5miles,theareafirsthad tobeinspected.

Underascorchingsun andalongdustytracks, BrothersTraceyandRyan droveasulkytoVictoria Parkandthenrodeonhorsebackforthreehoursthrough theroadlesssandyvirgin bushlandthatstretched downtotheswampyriver mud-flats.

TheBrothersdeemedthe areacouldbemadeanideal siteforaresidentialschool andfarmfortheneedylads confidedtotheircare.

Ontheiradviceitwas agreedtopurchaseproperty consistingofthisbushland, theninthewilderness.beyondtheyoungcity'ssuburbs,for£2,000.

WithBrotherBodkin, BrotherRyansetoutplans forthemainnoblebuilding ofthosedays,anditwas saidthatundertheArchitectsCavanaghandCavanagh,theedificewaseasily oneofthemostmodern publicbuildingsintheState.

Itiswithpridethatwelookbackonwhathasbeenachieved,butthefruitsofthose laboursareonlyanincentivetocontinuewiththenobleworkoflockingaftertheorphan.

HisLordshipBishopGibneyjourneyedtoClontarf onJanuary3rd,1901to laytheFoundationstoneof thefirstmainbuildingand theworkwasfinallycompletedandenabledthefirst boystotakeupresidence onOurLady'sBirthday, September'8thofthesame year.

TheearlyfameofClontarf spread.Itsgroundsbecame therendezvousofwealthy yachtsmen.Onmanyoccasions,theGovernor'sbarge, gaywithsunshadesandpersonnel,camedownthe channel fromCanning Bridge,topicnicatClontarf.

Alunglineofjarrahposts, placedinpositionbyconvictswhocampedonthe oppositesideoftheriver fromClontarf,stillremain intheriverafter122years toguideboatsthroughthe 'samechannel.

Clontarfbecamethefamoustouristandpicnic groundsoftheearlyPerth nobilities. Itispleasing

toknowthatmanyvisitors tothisState,regardClontarfasone,ofthemostupto-dateBoys'Towninthe world.

Theterm"Boys'Town" wasadoptedonthesuggestionofHisGracetheArchbishopwhenheopenedthe newChapelin1941.

HisGraceDr.Prendiville onthedayoftheSolemn ConsecrationoftheChapel, Deember3rd,1941,said thatbecauseoftheself-sulficientactivitiesofEducation,TechnicalTraining withpracticalworkpertainingtoalltradesandthe varietyoffarmpursuits conductedatClontarf,he wouldsuggestthatClontarf benolongerknownas boys'orphanage,butas ClontarfBoys'Townand fromthatdayithasbeen knownassuch.

IntheChapelallthe workofbrickwork,ceilings, parquetry,seats,altar,:credos,lamps,windowsand mouldingshasbeendone notbyhiredskilledtradesmen,butbytheyoungtechnicallytrainedcraftsmenof theschool,theboysranginginyearsfrom14to17.

Theutmostcreditwas duetotheboys,theBrothers andallassociatedwiththem intheconstructionofthis beautifuledifice.Notalone theChurch,buttheState alsohadreasontobeproud andgratefulforthetrainingthattheboyswere receivingatClontarf.

TheChapelwasthedesignofayoungwomanarchitectMarieJackson.Ithas asimplebeautyandanatmosphereofpeaceamid youthfulrowdysurroundings.Aswithmanyofthe otherbuildings,addedto theoriginaledifice,the

SomeoftheboysreturnedtoBoys'Townin1945 butthedepreciationand damagetothebuildingsand property estimatedat £8,000leftthenewSuperiorRev.Bro.H.Cowleyfacedwithatremendoustask ofrenovationandorganisation.

Theyears,however,have beenkindtoClontarf.Ithas succeededinallitsundertakings,irrespectiveofthe hardshipsendured.

Thishasbeenmadepossibleonlythroughtheselfsacrificingeffortsofthose generousbenefactorswho fromeverywalkoflife, havesparednothingintime, labourandmaterialcontributiontoaidwhatthey consideranoblecause.

THREEyoungAmericans fromBoston.WilliamSullivan,JohnLynchandPaul O'Malley,whoarenow Columbanmissionariesin thePhilippines,oftenreflect ontheseriesofcoincidences thateventuallybrought themtogether.

Theyallservedinthe Americanarmedforcesin WorldWarII.Eachdecided tostudyforthepriesthood, butbecausetheyhadnot sufficientLatin,theyhadto returntoschool.Atvarious intervalstheyattendedSt. PhilipNeri'sSchoolin Boston.Eachdecidedtojoin St.Columban'sMissionSocietyandwenttotheseminary,wheretheybecame acquaintedforthefirsttime andrealisedthattheirlives hadrunonparallelcourses. Afterordinationtherewas littlelikelihoodthatthey wouldallbesenttothesame missionterritory,butwhen theirappointmentscame theywereallassignedtothe lionswhoaredestitutespirituallyandphysically.

Philippines.Oncetherethey couldhavebeenassignedto anyofthescatteredmissions,butallweresentto Zambales.Coincidencehas indeedalongarm.

FRANCISCANSIN HONGKONG

TheFranciscanFathersof theOrderofFriarsMinor before1948hadmorethan sevenhundredmembers workinginChina,including 18BishopsandninePrefects Apostolic,andtheyhad chargeof27missionarydistricts.Whentheirwidespreadapostolicworkwas rudelyshatteredbytheadventofcommunists,they turnedtomissionarywork inotherareas,including HongKong.Inthiscolony theyhavedevotedthemselvestowidelydifferent works,includingscholarly activityinanInstituteof BiblicalStudentsandlabour inHongKong'sonelarge miningdistrict.

FormanyyearstheFranciscanswereengagedin Chinaintranslatingthe HolyScripturesintoChinese. Theyhavealsorecently broughtoutapocketedition oftheGospelsinChinese. Thishasbeengreatlywel-

cornedandhassoldinlarge numbers.Theyarenowpreparingpopulareditionsof theHolyScriptureinChinesefordailyreading,also anabridgementoftheentire Bible.

DURINGtheyear1960more thanfourhundredcultural delegationsof79nationsor regions-180fromAsia, AfricaandLatinAmericavisitedCommunistChina.

Onitspart,Chinasentout morethantwohundred delegationsto48countries, ofwhich30werecountries ofAsia,AfricaandLatin America.Culturalagreementsweremadewith50 nations,amongthemsuch placesastheUnitedArab RepublicandCuba.

TodayChinahasfriendshipassociationswith47 countries.

THEBishopofAberdeen.Britain'smostnortherly diocese,hasspokenoutbothformoreuseofthe languageofthepeopleintheliturgyandforamore seriousstudyofLatinbytheclergy.

BishopFrancisWalsh, W.F.,ofAberdeen,rejectedthecontentionthat theMassshouldbekept inLatinsothattravellers inforeigncountriescould stillunderstandit.Hewas writingintheClergyReview,theologicaland liturgicalmonthly.

WHATHESAIDmorethanthirtyyearsagoiseven truertoday.Westandtodayonthebrinkofaworldof awesomeopportunities-eitherforself-destructionor forthegreatestaccomplishmentsinthehistoryof mankind.

WHICHITSHALLBEisgoingtodependinlarge measureonhowChristiansreconciletheirdifferences, tightenuptheirobservanceofthe AN morallaw,andstartbeinginfact whattheyareinname-otherChrists AWAKENINGlivinginthe20thcentury.Onecould becomeverypessimisticoverthe futureoftheworld,confrontedaswearewiththe externalenemyofgodlesscommunismandtheequally insidiousinternalthreatoftotalmaterialismwhichhas engulfedsomuchofourthinking. Thereis,however,anothersideofthecoin.Thesigns maybefewandfarbetween,butitappearsthatthere isanawakeninginmanyastothetrueresponsibility oflivingourChristianobligationstothefullest.Not onlyistherealatentidealism,particularlyinthe, young,thatmustbecapitalisedupon,butitseemsthat thereareincreasingnumberswhohavediscoveredthe futilityofgainingthewholeworldifitmeanstheloss oftheireternalsalvation. Everywherethereseemstobeaferment,scattered andstillweak,itistrue,butvitalenoughtoleaventhe entiremassifitisgivenachance.Wemust.therefore, taketheoptimisticviewofPopePiusXIandlendour fullsupporttoanymovementwhichgivesanyhopeof stemmingthetidaldeclinethatconfrontsus. Itseems,too,thatthosewhoaregenuinelyconcerned aboutthesalvationoftheworldaswellasthatoftheir ownsouls,instinctivelyrealisethatiftheireffortsare tobearanyfruittheymustbeunitedtothegreat redemptiveactofChristHimself,Hisdeathonthe CrossmemorialisedintheHolySacrificeoftheMass.

TURNTO THEALTAR

"WITHOUTMEYOUCANDONOTHING"(John 15:5),Jesustellsus,andthemorequicklywerealise thisthemorefruitfulwillbeour effortsonhisbehalf.Whenweunite ourpunyendeavourswithHisinfiniteactionintheMass,then,and onlythen,willtheybegintoachieve ourfondestambitions.Itistothealtar,therefore,that wemustturn,andtotheextensionofthealtar,the Communiontable,ifweareconcernedaboutthedire prospectsconfrontingtheworld.We,oftoday,inthe middleofthisfast-moving20thcentury,holdatremendousopportunityinourhands.

Thatiswhywhatwecalltheliturgicalmovementis soimportant.Itssoleconcernistohelpusrealiseand appreciatedeeplythedignitygivenusthroughour identitywithChristasmembersofHisMysticalBody andthevalueofjoiningourefforts,notonlywiththose ofourfellow-ChristiansbutwithChristHimselfinthe oneactthatreallymatters-therenewaloftheredemptivedeathofChrist.

Thechallengeisunparalleled.Howwellandhow f.,i'Christianswillacceptitisthequestion.Butthe timeisgrowingshort..Everydayitnarrowsdownto aneitherorprospect."Hewhoisnotwithmeisagainst mc."saysChrist(Matt.12:30,Luke11:23).Andwe cannotforgetHiscurseonlukewarmness.Thereisno in-between.Arewegoingtotakeadvantageofthe wonderfulopportunityinourpathorarewe,liketoo manyothers,goingtobeindifferent?

Theinstructionwasissued bytheSacredCongregation ofRites.Itcomplements thecongregation'sdecreeof lastJulysimplifyingthe MissalandBreviaryand eliminatinganumberoffeast daysofsaintsfromthecalendar.Inanapostolicletterannouncingthatdecree, HisHolinessPopeJohn XXIIIsaidthatspecialdiocesanandreligiouscalendarsassoonaspossible shouldbemadeto"conform totheprinciplesandideals oftheneweditionofthe rubricsandofthecalendar."

Thenewdecreesaiditisgoodforeachdioceseto haveitsownliturgicalcalendar. Butitwarnsthe Churchauthoritiesresponsiblefordrawingupspecial liturgicalcalendarsnotto givelocalfeastspreference overthetemporalcycleor theuniversalfeastsofthe Church.

Theinstructionlistsa numberofdevotionalfeasts whichitsaidcanbeobservedonlyinthoseplaces whichhavespecialrelation tothem.Oneofthemit mentionedisthefeastof OurLadyofLoreto.This commemorationisnowto beobservedonlyatthe shrineatLoreto,Italy.

ThefeastofSt.Philomena,observedinsome placesonAugust10,iseliminatedcompletely:TheRites congregationsaiditisnot tobeincludedinanyliturgicalcalendar.

Theimplicationisthatthe congregationhasdecided thatthehistoricalevidence oftheexistenceofthesaint istoodubious.Theidentityofthepersonwhoseremainswerediscoveredin theRomancatacombsin 1802.andwhowasbelieved thentohavebeenavirgin martyrnamedPhilomena. haslongbeenamatterof doubt.

Therehasbeenstrongevidenceforover50yearsindicatingthattheperson whoseremainswerefound inthetombwasnotnecessarilyamartyr,andpossibly didnotinlifebearthename Philomena.

TraditionAndFact

Theseprovisionsapply primarilytotheolderareas ofChristianity,suchasEurope,wheresincetheMiddleAgesmanyprivatedevotionshaveoverthecenturiesbecomepublicfeastdays.

Theinstructionreiterates 'PopeJohn'sorderoflast July.onconformingtothe spiritoftherecentreforms. Itstatesthatthosewho drawupspecialcalendars mustbecarefulinobserving theproperseasonadhering tothecycleofthemystery oftheRedemption,which musttakeprecedenceover otherfeasts. Thusevery Sundayisacommemoration ofChrist'sResurrection,and Sundays,andfeastsofOur LordandtheBlessedVirginandotherfeastsofthe UniversalChurchmustprevailoverlocalfeasts.

Whileholdingitagood thingforeachdioceseto haveitsowncalendar,the congregationsaidthat commononecouldbedrawn upbymutualagreementfor aprovince,region,oreven awholenation.Thesame thingcouldapplytoliturgicalcalendarsusedbyareligiousorderwithinonenotion,itsaid.

RestrictedFeasts

Amongthedevotional feastswhichtheinstruction orderedrestrictedtocalendarsofthoseplaceswith specialconnectiontosuch feastsarethese:OurLady ofLoreto,theAnticipation ofOurLady'sDelivery,the MarriageofOurLady,the FlightintoEgypt,thefeast oftheLord'sPrayer,the feastoftheCrownof Thorns,theEucharistic HeartofJesus,theHumility ofMary,andthePurityof Mary. Theinstructionalsonotes thatinpreparingorrevisingthehistoricallessons oftheBreviaryforfeasts ofeverykindcaremustbe takenthattheyarebrief andfitting. Nolesson shouldbelongerthanthe lengthofanordinaryBreviarylesson-andthusnormallynotmorethan120 words.

Againinsistingonhistoricalaccuracy,theinstruction warnsthatifthereisnot sufficientandsureinformationfortheselessons,they shouldbetakenfromthe collectionofcorflmonlessons,orfromsuitabletexts fromsermonsoftheFathers oftheChurch.Thisalso applies, the instruction states,toantiphons,responseshymnsandotherparts oftheDivineOffice.

Sincethewaryears,the developmenthasbeencarriedforwardbyoutstanding principalsinRev.Bros. Crowley,O'SheaandDoyle. ThepresentPrincipalis Rev.Bro.P.L.O'Dioherty.

ThefarmatClontarf Boys'Townissituatedon thebanksofthe-Canning River.Itcomprisesabout 400acres,halfofwhichis cleared.Thefarmisused mainlyfortheraisingof dairycattleandpigs,and hasbeensownwithamixed pastureofsub-cloverand ryegrassesoverthemany years.Eachyearasmall areaofoatsissownasfodderforthemilkingcows.

Thedairyherd aregisteredA.I.S.herd,suppliesmilkandcreamtothe home.Occas:anally,ithas competedatvariousRoyal AgriculturalShowsandhas wonnumerousribbons.

Thepiggerywhichoccupiesanareaof3acresis dividedintosmallyards,all ofwhichareplanteddown withgrassandirrigated. Undertheseconditionsit isposibletomaintainan averageof200pigsallthe yearround.Asaresultof thisthepigsthatarereared areextremelyhealthyand toppricesaresecuredfor themattheMidlandpig sates.

Thefarmcanalsoboasta poultryrunandisableto supplymostoftheeggsrequiredinthekitchen.Itis desiredthataflockof400 hensbekeptsothatsufficienteggscanbeproduced tohelpmaintainabalanced dietfortheboys.

Whilsteveranxiousto solicitmaterialandfinancialhelpfromallavenues, Clontarfisnotunmindful ofhelpingitselfinevery way.Thisitdoesbystrivingtorunthefarmona profitablebasis,thereby helpingtoassisttheoverallexpenditureofrunning andmaintaininganestablishmentsuchasBoys' TownClontarf.

Atrulygreatprojectof transplantingpoorchildren whoarewithoutmeans,influenceandinmanycases, withoutparents.Thesechildrenarenowdoingmuch tostrengthenandextend theEmpiresandhelpingto preserveourChristiancivilisationandgivetosuch poorchildrentheopportunitiesinlifesimilartothose opentothesonsofcomfortablysituatedparents. Theplacingwithfamilies isnotalwayspossibleand inordertoprovideaholidayforthoseboyswhoremainathome,aholiday housewasbuiltbythe boysatLancelinIsland,a fishingvillagesome85miles northofPerth.The-work wassupervisedbyabuilder andtheboyswerehelped byseveraltradesmenduring theconstruction.Inorder tohelpinfishing,alaunch hasnowbeenprovided. Withthehelpofbenefactors supplyingthematerials,the Brothersandboyshaveconstructedafinelaunch.

Incelebratingits60th anniversaryallhonour mustbegiventotheselfsacrificingpioneerBishops, PriestsandBrothers,whose noblemindsforesawthat thelittlemustardsownin 1901wouldfructifyandexpandsomedaytodeserve theapplicationusedtoday "ClontarfBoys'Town."

Insixtyyears2451boys havepassedthroughBoys' Town.Overtheyearsmany ofthemfromtimetotime, returntovisittheplace wheretheyspenttheirboyhood.Theirvisitsafford extremegratificationtothe Brothers.

Whataconsolation,itis tothesemen,whodevote theirlivestothischaritable workwithoutanyearthly

reward,toseetheirformer pupilsandresidentsofClontarfmakingprogressand achievingsuccessintheir variedvocations.

Wehearofanoccasional failure.Rarelydowehear ofthevastmajoritywho provesuccessful.

OldBoysofClontarfare tobefoundineverywalk oflifeengagedinprofessional,commercial,tradeor agriculturalpursuits.

Onehundredandthirty-fourmembersof theSt.VincentdePaulSociety,representing allconferences,attendedthefestivalmeeting devotionsatSt.Mary'sCathedralonSunday, April16.HisGracetheArchbishoppresided atSolemnPontificalBenediction,assistedby Rev.P.O'Mara(deacon)andRev.P.Quinn (sub-deacon).

Inpreachingthesermon fortheoccasion,V.Rev. Mgr.M.McKeonrelatedthe storyofayoungcivilservantinDublin,thelateJohn McGuiness.At23yearsof age,Johnhadnothought aboutdoingapostolicwork. WhenaskedbyaBrotherof theSt.VincentdePaul Societytoattendaweekendretreat,Johntriedto excusehimselfbysayinghe hadaveryimportantgolf tournamenttoplayonthat particularweek-end.

TheBrother,however, persisted,andJohnattendedtheRetreat,wherehe musthavereflectedvery deeplyonhislifeandhis dutytoGod.

Attheendoftheretreat, JohnMcGuinesswasa changedman-onewho wouldhenceforthdonatealmosthisentireincomeof £A1,250toworksofcharity andmissions.

Fourteenyearslater,the membersinchargeofthe hostelreceivedaletterfromtheFrenchmanwho,as hewrote,hadbeenawakenedtothemeaningof charitythosemanyyears ago.Nowhestoodatthe altarofGodtocelebratehis firstMass.Hewouldpray unceasinglyforthesonsof St.Vincentandforthefulfillmentoftheirworks.

Finally,referringagainto JohnMcGuiness,Mgr.McKeonsaidthatJohn'smotto inalifespentservingGod, couldverywellhavebeen St.Vincent'smotto,orevery memberoftheSocietyof St.VincentdePaul-"You couldnotdoenoughforGod -noonecould."

Theeveningfollowedthe customaryinformalfraternalstylethathasthrough theyearsmadeC.M.L. socialspopularonalloccasions.

Inhisaddressofwelcome thepresidentoftheMetropolitanBranchextendeda particularwelcometothe ladieswhointheirselflessnessalwaysencouragedthe meninanyLeagueproject inwhichtheymaybeengaged.Itwastoagreatdegreethroughtheinspiration oftheladiesthatmembers wereabletocarryoutthe workfallingtothem.

Inthepast,hesaid,the Leaguehadassistedaged, orphans,anddistressedinas fullacapacityasmembershipcouldcope,mostof theseactivitieswereof shortduration.However, sincereceivinginspiringaddressesfromRev.Fathers DillonandO'Shea,wholeheartedsupporthasbeen pledgedtotheCatholicBoy Scouts'Movement.With thisadditionalfull-timeactivityformembersthecontinuedsupportoftheladies wouldbemostessential.

PASSIONPLAY

Thefirstslidesshowed scenesofthevillageofOberammagauwithitsattractivenaturalsurroundings wheremanyofthebearded playerscouldbeseenwalkingthestreetsinordinary dress.

Theplay,whichisperformedintheopenair,uses 1250peopleandisperformed 83timesinaseason.Interwovenwiththeplayaro aboutfortytableaux.Each ofthesetableauxrepresents ascenewhichpresagesan eventfromtheNewTestament,forexample,the mannainthedesertandthe LastSupper.Careistaken tomaintainthegreatest realismand,tothisend, glamourisrigorouslyplayed downandmaterialsforcostumingareascloseaspossibletothosewhichwould havebeenworninChrist's time.

Tothemajorityoflistenersitwasjustanothernews item.TotheCatholicsoftheWestitwasadreamcome true,buttotheBishopandpriestsoftheDioceseof Wilcannia-Forbes,itwastheannouncementofagift fromHeaven-missionarySistersforthepeopleofthe bush.

Scarcelysixyearshad passedsincetheSacred CongregationofPropagandahadgrantedtherequestofHisGraceArchbishopTweedyofHobart, andextendedtohimthe facultyofofficiallyerectingtheSocietyofthe HomeMissionarySisters ofOurLadyasaReligious CongregationofDiocesan right.

TheBeginning

THEIDEAofsuchaCongregationwasbornin 1933,whenaTasmanian mother,worriedaboutthe lackofreligiousinstructionforherfourchildren inthesparselypopulated areainwhichshelived, suggestedtohersympatheticparishpriestthe possibilityofspecialSistersfortheinstructionof childrenincentresdevoid ofapermanentCatholic school.

Thethrusthithomeas sheremindedhimthat countrychildren,liketheir citycounterparts,had soulstosave,butthatunlikethemorefortunate urbandweller,theopportunitiesofinstruction werenotalwaysavailable tothem.

Itwasnotuntilten yearslaterthathewas abletoseethebeginning ofthefulfilmentofthat mother'srequest.Earlyin 1944,fourgeneroussouls, allofthemLegionariesof Mary,putthemselvesat theserviceoftheArch,bishopofHobartforthe ApostolateoftheOutback.

andtheHomeMissionary Sisters,ortheRosarySisters,astheyarecommonly called,becameareality. Sincethatday,withthe blessingofGod,underthe guidanceoftheirfounder, FatherJohnWallis,the Sistershaveincreasedin numberandRosaryhouses havebeenestablishedin fourcentresinTasmania.

Vocationshavecomefrom allpartsofAustralia,from NewZealandandfrom Singapore,thusenabling theSisterstoanswerthe requestwhichreached themfromthefarWestof NewSouthWales.very soonaftertheirfoundation. HisLordshipBishop Fox,oftheDioceseof Wilcannia-Forbes,sawin theRosarySisterstheanswertothequestionof howhecouldbestserve hispeoplebyproviding themwithopportunities forreligiousinstruction, whichbecauseoftheconstitutionalset-upofexistingreligiousorders,had, uptothem,appearedalmostimpossible.

LiketheBishopofTasmania,hewasfacedwith theproblemsofsuitably instructingthechildren residentwithinthe 160,000squaremilesof hisdiocese.Lackoffinance,nottomentionthe scarcityofReligiousteachers,preventedhimfrom establishing agreater numberofpermanent schoolsinthearea.Becauseofdifficultyofcommunicationandtransport, andthetremendousdistancethatseparatedthe

HIGHWAYSANDTHE BYWAYS,"forlastyear aloneinthisdiocesethey travelled16,000milesin theirowncaronmissionaryworkoveraperiodof 44weeks,visiting12 parishes,travellingfor manymilesinareaswhere amoretruthfulappellationof"byway"andeven "highway"wouldbetwowheeledtracksconnecting stationhomesteads.

Asaresultoftheir labours,891homesinthe outbackwerevisited,802 childrenreceivedpersonal instruction,137werepreparedforFirstCommunion,and71Baptisms, babiesandadults,were arranged. Becausetheirruleallows themtoliveinhomes wherenecessary,andto eatatthefamilytable,the Sistersareabletoelicita greaterconfidencefrom thepeople.Sothewayis leftopenforadiscussion, whch,throughhumanreintimateproblemsoffamilylifewhichneedclarificationandadvice,but which,thoughhumanrespect,wouldneverbediscussedwiththeprieston hisrounds.
