Althoughthecommunistpressattackedtheappeal, ananonymouspoodlegavesixguineasandaLondon catnamedSmithcontributed25/-,themonsignorsaid inaradiobroadcast.About£18.000wasraisedamid thetumult.

ArchbishopofWestminster,describedthefurorestirred upamongBritishanimal-loversbypressmisinterpretationsofasuggestionmadebytheCardinalinconnection withthe"familyfast"herecommendedforEmber FridayofLent.TheCardinalhadurgedCatholicsto deprivethemselvesofsomefood,drink,cigarettesor otherneedsonthatdayandgivethemoneysavedtoa FamilyFastFund.

Itisreasonthatcreatesmotivesforbelieving.Faith istoreligionverymuchlikecreditistobusiness.Just asonemusthaveareasonforgivingcredit,sotoo,one musthaveareasonforbelieving.Theconclusionsof reasonforacceptingthetestimonyofanyone,for example,thetestimonyofChrist,arenotmathematically.certain.Theyareonlymorallycertain.Theyare verymuchlikethecertitudethatyouhavethatyou werebornofyourownparents.Ifyouwereimmediatelychallengedtoprovethatparticularfact,youmight beatgreatlosstodoso;butyourcertitudeisgreater thanyourreasonsforyourcertitude.Itismerely sufficientthatreasonbeanadequatebasisforadecision. ThoughLordNelsononceputatelescopetohisblind eye,therewasstillreasonforbelievingthatatelescope hasthepower,ifappliedtoaseeingeye,toembrace objectswhichthenaturaleyecouldnotsee.

EstablishingMotivesForOurBelief

Howdoesamancometofaithinthe_Divinityof Christ?Hisreasonestablishescertainmotivesofcredibility.namely:(1)AnyonewhocomesfromGodshould bepre-announced,(2)Heshouldbeabletowork wondersandsignsasanattestationthatHeisaDivine messenger,(3)NothingthatHeteachesshouldbecontrarytohumanreason,thoughitmaytranscendit. Onceonehasthemoralcertitudeforassentingtobelief intheDivinityofChrist,thenfollowstheactoflove.

Thehumanheartcannotlovewithouttheunseen,the invisible,themysterious.Childrenmusthavetheir angels,theirsaints,andwhentheylosethese,theyhave leftonlyspacecadets.Adults,whentheylosefaith, musthavedetectivestories:astheylosethemysteries ofreligion,theybegintobeinterestedinwhokilled thebarmaid.Lovehastothriveonanideal,something unexplored.Soreligionisbasedonaneruptionfroman unseenorder,aself-disclosure,somethingthatisgiven.

Whenwetrytomakeeverythingclear,wemake everythingconfused.If,however,weadmitone mysteriousthingintheuniverse,theneverythingelse becomesclearinthelightofthat.Thesunissobright, somysteriousthatonecannotlookatit,andyetinthe lightofthesuneverythingelseisseen.AsChesterton said:"Wecanseethemoonandwecanseethingsunder themoon,butthemoonisthemotheroflunatics."

Thismaycomeasasurprise,althoughapleasantone, tomanypeoplewhosemindshavebeenformedbyour localeducationsystem.Intheiryouthfullearningthe Churchwasoftensmearedeitherdirectlyorbyimplicationas"authoritative"or"reactionary"-orcompletely ignored.Theheroesheldupforadmirationwereoften peoplelikeSirFrancisDrake,thepirate,and-Percy Shelley,theerraticadulterer-peoplewho,whilecommendablefortheirskills,would'hardlyhavemadegood companyforchildren.

ThetruthofhistoryisthattheChurchhasusually beenwelloutinfrontinthefightforhumandignityand freedom.InourEnglish-speakingworldmanyexample), merelyawaitrecognition.ItwasStephenLangton,the CatholicCardinalArchbishopofCanterbury,whotook theleadinwrestingMagnaCartafromKingJohn. NearerourtimeandinAustraliaitwasCardinalMoran ofSydneywhostoodbytheunionistsinthemost decisivestrikeinAustralianhistoryattheendoflast century.

Today,allovertheworld,thetraditionisonlybeing continuedbythoseCatholicChurchmenwhohavethe couragetostandupagainstdictatorships,whetherof therightoroftheleft,andcondemninjusticeoftenat risktopersonallibertyandlifeitself.

InSouthAfricaArchbishopHurleyofDurbanrecentlyspelledoutinpublicthesignificanceofhis country'sbreakwiththeCommonwealth,sayingthat thegovernmenthadactedlikeamanmaltreatinghis familyandwarningthepolicenottointerfere.

LastmonthinPolandCardinalWyszynskiwarned thosewhowouldwishtotakefreedomawayfromthe Polishpeople,remindingthemthatPolandknewwhat itmeanttowearchainsandknewwhatitmeantto throwthemoff.Becauseofhisownpersonalcourage andthesolidCatholicFaithofthepeoplehisisoneof thefewcriticalvoicesthancanbeheardbehindthe IronCurtain.

DowninSouthAmericadictatorTrujilloofthe DominicanRepublic,acurrentfriendofCastro,has quietenedalmostallopposition-buttheCatholic Bishops,undertheleadershipofPapalNuncioLino Zanini,haveralliedtovoicetheirdisapprovalofhis tyranny.Thegoinghasnotbeeneasy.Theyhavebeen accusedofincitingrebellion.Morethanfiftypriests havebeenexpelledfromthecountryandtheNuncio's lifehasbeenthreatened.

InHaiti,power-hungryPresidentDuvalierhas smashedthelabourunionsandgaoledthepolitical opposition.Nowallthatstandsinhiswayarethe studentsandthestrongsupporttheydrawfromthe ChurchinacountrywhichismainlyCatholic.Several priestshaverecentlyearnedthehonourofexpulsionamongthemArchbishopFrancoisPoirierandAuxiliary BishopRemyAugustin.

IntheUnitedStatestheCatholicBishopshavebeen mostoutspokenagainsttheattemptstokeepupsegregationinschools.BishopHallinanofCharlestonrecentlywarnedCatholicswhoattendedmeetingscalled toopposetheteachingsoftheChurchonthismatter thattheywereactingincontemptoftheChurch's authority.Hisdioceseincludesallthetraditionally segregationalistStateofSouthCarolinaandeventhere hisvoiceisbeingheard.

Notwithstandingalltheseclear-cutfacts,ignorance and,evenmore,prejudiceandfailuretounderstand howsuchincidentsastheSpanishInquisitiontook place,willprobablyleaveourlocalschoolteachingin thedarkforalongtimetocomeabouttherealpat playedbytheCatholicChurchhiWesterncivilisation.

Thefactis,ofcourse,thattheChurchhascontinued toraisehervoicefromthebeginningofChristianity, andwilldosotilltheworldendsasthepre-eminent andfearlessteacherofthetruthwhichChristpromised wouldmakemenfree.

Abuffetteawillfollowandastheoccasionwillmark thecloseofanerainWesternAustralianhistory,itis hopedthatasmanypastpupilsaspossiblewillattend.

Theimpendingdemolitionofthecollegewillstart themindsofthe10,000menwhohadtheprivilegeof beingeducatedtherealongthepathofnostalgicreminiscence-andwhatscopethereisforreminiscence!

OnanAprildayin1894,forinstance,aproudmother madethe12-miletrainjourneyfromFremantlewith hernervousyoungestsontothenewschoolthathad lustbeenopenedintheTerrace.ThebeardedprinTipal, BrotherO'Brien,soonputthe12-year-oldyoungsterat ease. Littledidtheboyrealisethat46yearslater,asa memberofHisMajesty'sLegislativeAssembly,he wouldbeinstrumentalinsavinghisoldschoolfrom demolitiontomakewayforGovernmentoffices.

AchievementsInCivicLife

IgnatiusGeorgeBoyle,thelittleboyof1894whodied lastyear,wasonlyoneofmanyC.B.C.oldboyswho havegainedprominenceinthepubliclifeoftheState andtheCommonwealth.Itisimpossibletonamethem all,ofcourse,butafewwhospringtomindare:Sir ThomasMeagher,whowasknightedforthejobhedid aswartimeLordMayorofPerth;EmilNulsen,whowill retirenextyearaftermanyyearsasM.L.A.forEyre andMinisteroftheCrown;thelateA.J.Rodoreda, prominentNorth-WesterandSpeakeroftheLegislative Assembly;FredChaney,presentM.H.R.forPerth;Jack RhatiganandDesO'Neill,Ms.L.A.;andPatRoche,who recentlyretiredfromtheLegislativeCouncil.

Thearchitecture,dentistryandteachingprofessions andtheState'sagriculture,commerceandindustry wouldbemuchpoorerfortheabsenceoftheoldboys, whohavewieldedsuchabeneficialinfluenceinthem.

Thereisnodoubtthatthetrendiscontinuing.In thepastfouryearsabout36oldboyshavegraduated fromtheUniversity.Therewere11lastyear,11the yearbefore,andtherewillbeaboutthesamenumber thisyear.LastyearPatHenry,inthefinalyearofhis dentistrycourseattheUniversity,gainedfiveofthe sixdistinctionsawarded.Incompletingfourth-year dentistry,PeterHeagneygainedtheonlytwodistinctionsawarded.

Performanceslikethesebringbackmemoriesofthe college'sRhodesscholars-AlecJuett,AlaricPindar Boor,JackSavage,JohnHoranandPeterDurack.

AninterestingreminderofA.P.Boor-killedwith theRoyalFlyingCorpsin1917andoneofmorethana hundredoldboystogivetheirlivesfortheircountry intwoworldwars-wasdiscoveredatthecollegerecently.OnanolddesktheinitialsA.P.B.werefound deeplycarvednearoneedge.Neartheotheredge "AlaricPitt ."andhalfthe"d"ofPindarhadbeen gravenbeforeconscience,afalsealarmoraroving Brotherinterruptedtheexercise.

TheBrothersarejustifiablyproudoftheachievementsoftheiroldboys,butundoubtedlytheydraw theirgreatestsatisfactionfromthefactthatmorethan fiftyformerTerracepupilsarepriestsandabout26are ChristianBrothers.Thisdoesnotincludeanumber currentlytrainingforthereligiouslife.

Theoldboys'nominalrollcontainsthenamesoftwo bishops,BishopsGallagherandGoody,andthatof FatherG.P.O'Callaghan-nowParishPriestatEast Fremantle-whowasaseniorchaplaininWorldWarII andearnedtheundyingrespectandadmirationof membersoftheSixthDivisionoftheA.I.F.inthewar thatclaimedthelivesofRonKenneally,JimMoran, PatKelly,BrianMcCormack,DesTetterington,Garry Prendiville(nephewofHisGracetheArchbishop),and manyothers.

BECAUSEofthis,1feltthatsomeaccountshouldbe giventopriestsandlaypeopleofwhatisbeingachieved bytheY.C.W.OtherwiseIwouldfeelguiltyinasking themfortheircontinuedsupport.

Overthepastcoupleofweeksmorethansixtyyoung peoplehavebeenatMarianLodge,Kalamunda,for trainingsessionstopreparethemfortheirworkaslay apostles.AspartoftheirtrainingIaskedthemto writedownwhattheY.C.W.hadgiventhemintheir ownlivesandhowithaddonethis.

AtthattimeIhadnointentionofpublishingtheir remarks,butIhavesinceregrettedthatIdidnotgive themmoretimetopondertheirreplies.Theyhadonly halfanhourandsotheirreplieswerenecessarilybrief andmainlynotedsalientpoints.

ACATHOLICPARISHisaparishlongbeforeithas itschurch.Infact.manyparishesstarttheiractivities intemporaryfacilitiesandsometimesunder difficultconditions.Thechurchisthefulfilmentoftheparish.What,then,isaparish? R.:Therehavebeen severalrecentandofficial declarationsbyCatholic authoritiesonthismatter.

In1955PopePiusXII,addressing500delegatesofthe InternationalHighwayFederation,saidthat,withthe multiplicationofvehicles andthefrequencyofserious accidents,attentiontosafe drivingandtheobservance oftrafficlawsimposeupon driversofcarsamuchmore seriousobligationinconsciencethanmostpeople think.

In1957theAmerican CatholicBishopsissueda nation-widestatementdeclaringthatcarelessnessendangeringphysicalwelfare andevenlifeitselfisasin againstGod'sCommandment:"Thoushaltnotkill."

In1958PopePiusXII spokeagain,confirming that;andinthesameyear theAustralianCatholic Bishopsissuedtheirdocument,"Massacreonthe Roads,"pointingoutthat evenaslightinfluenceof alcoholdullsaman'sreflexesanddiminisheshis judgment;renderinghiman unsafedriver.Andtheysaid thatitcaneasilybeaserious ormortalsintodriveacar -whichisa"potentially lethalmachine-while undertheinfluenceofeven asmallamountofalcoholic drinkwhichalwaysdulls certainbraincentres,howeverlittleamanmaybe awareofit.

R.:AsIhaveexplained previously,Descartes'departureinthe17thcentury fromthetraditionalScholasticphilosophypavedthe wayforalmostachaosof successivephilosophical fashionscharacterisedmainlyby-theirextremeinstability. AmongCatholicthinkers, fromthemid-19thcentury onwards.thereactionhas beentheriseofNeo-Thomism,amoderaterealism, groundedonthebasicprinciplesestablishedbySt. ThomasAquinas,butadjustedtopresent-dayknowledgeinallfieldsofinquiry. Moreandmorenon-Catholicphilosophersarebeginningtotakeadeepand practicalinterestinthisdevelopement.

ThepositionoftheCatholic,ofcourse,remainsasit alwayswasinregardtothe relationshipsbetweenfaith andreason.Divinelyrevealedtruthsoffaithare notquestioned.Wemay, needlesstosay,askquestionsaboutthem.seekinga betterunderstandingof themandoftheirimplications.

Theologiansdoso;and questioneachother'sconclusionsinthegiveandtake oftheologicaldiscussions. ButnoCatholicquestions anyoftheArticlesofFaith inthemselves,asifthey wereopentodispute.They arethemostcertainthings weknowhavingthevery authorityofGodastheir guarantee.

Intherealmofphilosophy, however,Catholicsenjoya wideliberty,havingto watchonlyagainstconclusionsconflictingwithanythingalreadyknowntobe truebyfaith,oragainst systemswhichwouldinevitablyleadtosuchconclusions.

R.:Theycannotdoawaywithanysin,mortalor venial,unlessoneistrulyrepentantofthem.There are,however,degreesofrepentance.Onemaybe trulyrepentant,yetnotasrepentantasoneshould be.

Again,motivespromptingrepentancemaybe moreorlessperfect.ToseethingsfromGod's pointofviewandbesorryforone'ssinsbecause theyhaveoffendedHimisundoubtedlymoreperfectthantoseethingsonlyfromone'sownpoint ofviewandbesorryforfearofwhatmighthappen tooneselfotherwise.

NowtheSacramentswerenotinstitutedbyOur Lordfornothing.Theyhavetheirownworkto do.Andif,althoughwerepent,ourrepentanceis oftoopooraqualitytosecureourforgiveness,the LastSacramentsstepin,supplyforourdeficiencies, anddoawaywiththeguiltofbothmortaland venialsins. Thiswillmeanthesalvationofoursouls;butit doesnotfollowthatthoseforgivensinswillnot havetobeexpiatedinpurgatorybeforeoursouls canbeadmittedtothefullhappinessofheaven.

TheCatholicwithacriticalmindwhocomesup againstthatshouldusehis criticalmind,traininghis intellectualgunsor)thegratuitiousandmaterialistic assumptionsonwhichitis based.

Hecouldpointoutthat theso-called"verification principle"iseitheramerely linguisticconvention;orif itisastatementoffact, itisasyntheticproposition whichitselfneedsempirical verification.Againlinguistic philosophershavenotgone sofarastorepudiatethe factsofhistory.

Theydonotdenythatthe BattleofWaterloooccurred, andsoon.But,inthatcase, whatofthefactsofthe2,000 years'historyoftheCatholic ChurchandofherFounder, ChristHimself,ofWhomwe arecompelledtosaythatHe waseitherinsane,ora blasphemousliar,orwhat Heclaimedtobe,GodHimselfwithsupremedemands uponourallegianceevenas HewillbetheJudgewe mustfaceaswegofrom thisworld.

NEWRELIGIONS INDRAMATICcontrastto theslowprogressofChristianityinJapanisthecontinuedrapidexpansionofa groupofmodernJapanese religionsknownas"thenew religions,"themodernoffshootsofBuddhismand Shintoism.Theyhaveestablishedawidespreadfollowingamongthemassesand havemadeconsiderableimpactonthenation.They havecreatedthe*greatest challengefacedbythe Churchinthepost-war periodofJapan.

ANAUSTRALIAN PRIEST WHENtheAustralianmissionaryFatherBruton,S.J., trudgedupthelongwinding seven-mileroadtoGojo,he wasthefirstCatholicpriest toattemptmissionarywork inthearea.Afterlongweeks ofpreparation,hecommencedhisinstruction courseforprospectiveconverts.Inanareawhere thereare35,000souls,13 highschoolstudentsand12 adultscamealong,andof thoseafter12monthsonly threeyoungpeopleperseveredtotheend.
