DRIVING,DRINKING,ANDDEATH

"DrinkingDriver,"Casino:WhatwasthePope'sstatement,Ithinkaboutoyearago, concerningcar-drivingundertheinfluenceofalcoholandmortalsin?

R.:Therehavebeen severalrecentandofficial declarationsbyCatholic authoritiesonthismatter.

In1955PopePiusXII,addressing500delegatesofthe InternationalHighwayFederation, saidthat, withthe multiplicationofvehicles andthefrequencyofserious accidents, attentiontosafe drivingandtheobservance oftrafficlawsimposeupon driversofcarsamuchmore seriousobligationinconsciencethanmostpeople think.

In1957theAmerican CatholicBishopsissueda nation-widestatementdeclaringthatcarelessnessendangeringphysicalwelfare andevenlifeitselfisasin againstGod'sCommandment:"Thoushaltnotkill."

In1958PopePiusXII spokeagain,confirming that;andinthesameyear theAustralianCatholic Bishopsissuedtheirdocument,"Massacreonthe Roads,"pointingoutthat evenaslightinfluenceof alcoholdullsaman'sreflexesanddiminisheshis judgment;renderinghiman unsafedriver.Andtheysaid thatitcaneasilybeaserious ormortalsintodriveacar -whichisa"potentially lethalmachine-while undertheinfluenceofeven asmallamountofalcoholic drinkwhichalwaysdulls certainbraincentres,howeverlittleamanmaybe awareofit.

Therewouldbeavenial sinofintemperanceifhe tooktoomuchdrinksothat hecametothestageofbeing"tipsy,"ordefinitely undertheinfluence;and mortalsinifsodrunkthat hewasnolongerawareof whathewasdoing.

doCatholicsstandin regardtomodernphilosophy?

R.:AsIhaveexplained previously,Descartes'departureinthe17thcentury fromthetraditionalScholasticphilosophypavedthe wayforalmostachaosof successivephilosophical fashionscharacterisedmainlyby-theirextremeinstability.
