CelebrantoftheMasswastheRt.Rev.MonsignorJ. Hogan,assistedbyVeryRev,A.Commins,C.M. (Deacon),andRev.W.Foley(Sub-Deacon).The sermonwaspreachedbyVeryRev.W.J.Cagney, 0.M.I.,andthecommentarywasgivenbyRev.P.Quinn.

Thechoir,directedbyRev.P.McCudden,performed wellandwereexcellentlytelevised.

ItwasthefirstdirecttelecastoftheMassinWestern AustraliaandthestaffofABW,bothproductionand technical,aretobecommendedontheskillthatbrought tothousandstheMassinitsnewmedium.The"picture" Masslosesnoneofthesolemnityorreverenceofthe churchonthescreen-infact,asoneisbroughtsoclose tothesublimemomentsoftheSacrifice,themessageof Christisemphasised.

Tothoseseeingsuchatelecastforthefirsttime.perhapsthereisafeelingthatitjustanovelty,and inasmuchasitisnosubstitutetotheable-bodiedfor

ARENOWNED.Jesuithasdeclaredataclosed meetingofFreemasonsthattheyare "separatedbrothers."liketheOrthodox,the AnglicansandtheProtestants.

FatherMichelRiquet,S.J.,wasspeakingatthe MasonicLodgeatLaval,about150milessouthwestofParis.Hehadtakenupapublicchallenge fromamemberofthelodgetodefendtheCatholic Faith.

FatherRiquetsaidthattheimmensemajority ofMasonsbelieveinGod,althoughsomeFrench Masonsprofessatheism.Heremindedhisaudience thatBritishlodgeswillnotadmitatheists.

Hepointedoutthatconstitutionsdrawnupby Dr.JamesAnderson,oneofthefoundersofmodern Freemasonry,proclaimFreemasonryopentoall Christiansinordertopropagateahumanisticand deisticdoctrine.This,theJesuitsaid,makesthe Masons"separatedbrothers"oftheCatholics.

OnecanreadilyunderstandwhyCommunismand Socialismhaveastrongpoliticalappealtothesedepersonalised,dis-purposedcreatures.Sincetheyare nolongercentresofresponsibility,sincetheirlivesare withoutmeaning,whynotmergeandmassthemina politicalcollectivity?Atotalitariansystemisthe forcibleorganisationofachaoscreatedbythesurrender ofpersonaldignityandresponsibility.

Butthisfactistooobvioustomeritdevelopment. Whatismoreimportantistosuggestwaysbywhich modernHumpty-Dumptymaypiecehimselftogether andbeaman.Herearesomesuggestions,notputin theorderofrelativeimportance,butastheSpiritmoves.

1.Notelevisionshowisworthseeing,no"viewson thehOur"isworthhearing,untilonehasfoundoutthe pUrposeofliving.Thispurposeisrelatedtohappiness andnotjustapartofme,likethestomach,sex,ana "leftarmstraight"whengolfing.Itisboundupwith mydesireforlife,truthandlove.Wecanlivewithout anything,exceptthesethree.Whatgoodismoney withoutlife?WhydoIhatetohavesecretskeptfrom MeifIwerenotmadetoknowthetruth?Whatgreater tragedyisthereinlifethantobeunloved,exceptto livewithoutshowinglove?WouldIwantlifeorknowledgeorloveiftheydidnotexist?WouldIeverhave eyesiftherewerenotthingstosee?Doesnotthe fractionofthesedesiresforlifeandtruthandlove implythewhole?Wouldtherebeashadowwithout light?ThefactisIwantPerfectLife,anall-embracing Knowledge,andLovewithoutsatietyandhate.Thisis thedefinitionofGodWhoisFatherofLife,Whoisthe WordorIntelligence,WhoistheHolySpiritorLove.

2.Tojustthedegreewefallawayfromthisoverall purpose,wefeelnauseated,unhappy,lost,andabsurd. Tothedegreewereturntoit.wearehappyandbegin toloveothers.

NewYork,-Hungarians are"deeplyshocked"by reportsthatthecurrentsessionoftheUnitedNations GeneralAssemblymaynot discussSovietaggression againstHungary. Thisisthemessagesent bytheHungarianNational Committee,anorganisation ofexiledHungarianleaders, toleadingU.N.delegations andofficials.

Thecommittee,whose presidentisMgr.Bela Varga,protestedagainst treatingtheHungarian questionintheU.N.as"a coldwarissueorbargaininginstrumentjustata timewhenanewpersecutiondriveisstarting,in captiveHungary."

HEdecisionaboutgrantingStateaidtoprivate schoolsisinthepowerofpoliticians.Forthat reasonthedemandformerejusticetoabigpart oftheAustralianpeopleisbeingignoredbecause ofotherconsiderationsthatunderstandably' weighheavierillthemindsofthesegentlemen.There are,however,manydevelopmentsbothathomeand abroadthatmaygiveCatholicssomeconsolationintheir struggle,andevensomehoneofeventualsuccess,on themateriallevel.

WeshouldconsiderthateducationintheCatholic wayoflifehashelpedtoproducethemostoutstanding leadersinthedemocraticworldoftoday.Adenauerin Germany,successiveChristianDemocratsinItalyfrom deGasperion,deGaulleinFrance,Kennedyinthe UnitedStatesareallmenwhohavebeenhelpedby theirCatholicupbringingtoseeandgraspthefundamentalproblemsafflictingtheircountriesfromwithin andwithoutandtogiveleadershipinthecauseof freedom.ThesameistrueofFrancoatleastasregards hisworkinsavingSpainfromCommunism.

Ifsuchaharvestappearsinthelivesofafewasa resultoftruthsownthroughprevioussacrifice,who canestimatetheharvestinthelivesofmany?

EvenintheAustralianscenethespectacularisnot lacking.Aboutahundredpriestsfromourcountry havenowenlistedintheColumbanSociety,spreading orreadytospreadthetruthofChristinSouth-East Asia.ApartfromotherAustraliansworkinginthe missionfields,hereisaPeaceCorpsofwhichwemay wellbeproudandwhichshouldgivegreatconsolation tothosewhohavelabouredgenerouslywithoutState aidinourschoolsandtothelaypeoplewhohave supportedthem.

Apartfromthespectacular.therearethousandsupon thousandsofmenandwomenwhohavebenefitedfrom educationgiveninCatholicschoolsandareservingour countrywellineveryphaseofsociallife.Veryoften theycamefromfamiliesinthelowerincomebrackets andwithoutStateaidintheireducationtheyhave becomeusefulcitizensoftheState,payingtoday throughtaxationastheirfathersdidbeforethemfor Stateaidtobegiventonon-Catholics.

IntheUnitedStatesasimilarsituationexistsandis beingenduredinasimilarChristianfashion.Itseems likelythattheU.S.SupremeCourtmaysoonbeasked foradecisionontheconstitutionalpossibilityofgiving aidtoprivateschools.Afavourabledecisionthere wouldservetohighlighttheAustraliananomaly.

InEngland,birthplaceofmanyfreedoms,thestruggle foraidtoCatholiceducationhasadvancedfarand CatholicrightslongrecognisedbysuccessiveGovernments.Todaythevictoryisfirm,ifnotaltogethercomplete,andprovidesanexampletotheworld-and especiallytonationsloyaltothesamecrown,asis Australia.

Hereinourowncountrytherecentrequestbyour Hierarchyfor£10peryearperchildaspartpayment forservicesrenderedtothecommunitybyCatholic schoolsissoreasonable,somodestandsounanimous thatifitisignoredthenthereisastrongindicationthat thevoiceofChristHimselfwouldbeignoredamidthe politicalclamour.That,ofcourse,wouldnotbeunusual. ThefirsttimeithappenedledontoChrist'sresurrection -andintheAustraliancircumstancestheoutcome,even uptotheiiiesent,isnotaltogetherwithoutglory.

asagreatworkofrewritinginmodernEnglish.But thepopularpress,indulginginprintsomeofthetranslation'smorestartlingrevisionstoshocktheconservatismoftheordinaryBriton,gaveitamixedreception.

Doubtwasalsoexpressedpubliclywhetherthenew BiblewouldconquerthegeneralapathytoChristianity amongthemajorityofthepeople.Amajorobstacleto itsacceptancewillbetheimpactonordinarynonpractisingChristianswhoselittleknowledgeofthe Bibleisbasedlargelyonthestockphrasesfromthe KingJamesversionwhichhavenowbecomeapartof everydaylanguage.

PublicationofthenewtranslationoftheOldTestamentwillnottakeplaceforseveralyearsyet.

Theworkin1947followedademandfromthe generalassemblyoftheChurchofScotlandforacompletelynewtranslationincontemporaryEnglish.A jointcommitteewasformedcomposedofsixrepresentativesoftheChurchofEngland,threeoftheChurchof Scotland,threeoftheMethodistChurch,threeofthe CongregationalUnion,threeoftheBaptistUnion,one ofthePresbyterianChurchofEnglandandtwoofthe SocietyofFriends.

THISISANIMPORTANTDISTINCTION,whichmight notmeetwiththeapprovalofeveryartist,butcertainly shouldbetheguidingmotiveofevery GUIDINGreligiousartist.Thereisnothingsosubjectiveasartappreciation.TheoldLatin MOTIVEmottothatthereisnoarguingtastesisa truismthatcannotbeargueditself.It seems,however,inregardtoreligiousorliturgicalart fortheornamentationofourchurchesweshouldbe guidedbysomedefiniteprinciples.Suchartmaynot meetwiththeapprovalofeveryone,butcertainlyit shouldnotbesuchastoalienateaworshipper.Ifitis controversial,itshouldnotbesomuchso,astodefeatits ownpurpose.whichisthefosteringofaproper.spirit of prayer.

WhenwearedealingwiththeHouseofGod,we shouldsincerelyaimattheverybestwithinourmean. andnotbesatisfiedwithsecond-ratecompromises.And sincethepurposeofartinchurchistoteachreligiou.i truthinamannerbothappealingandappropriatetothe congregation,itshouldbeanaidtoprayerandstirour devotion. Thesecriteriawouldcertainlymilitateagainstthat formofstereotyped,commercialpieceswhichare Mechanicallymultipliedbythethousandandhencelose allpersonalandcreativeworth.Usuallysuchso-called artisweakandsentimentalandanappealtotheleast cranniondenominatorofappreciation.

SYMBOLIC ART

Mr.Hyde'sresignation fromtheBritishCommunistPartyin1948andhis conversiontotheCatholic Faithcreatedasensation.

Sincethen,hehasdevoted himselftofightingthecause heonceserved.

Mr.Hyde'sitineraryfor Victoriahasnotyetbeen finalisedbuthewilllecture inseveralcountrycentres beforehegoestoMelbourne.AfterhisAustraliantourhewillgotoNew Zealand.

Becausehewasnotonly aCommunist,butoneof thehierarchyoftheBritish CommunistPatty,editingfor manyyearsthe"Daily Worker,"andinstructing thosewhotaughtMarxismto therankandfileinEngland,DouglasHydeisable tospeakwithauthorityon Communism. Hewasbornin1911and joinedtheCommunistParty attheageof17.Heserved ittirelesslyanddevotedly forthenext20yearsuntil dissatisfactionanddisillusionmentcausedhimtoresign. Duringthoseyearshemet hiswife,whowasaparty member,andshe,together withtheirtwochildren, cameintotheChurchwith him.

WORLDHIS BATTLEFIELD

Ashehadtoearnaliving forhiswifeandfamily,he continuedasajournalist sincethatwastheworkhe wastrainedtodo.Hedecidedthat,Latherthanjoin thestaffofaparticular paper.hewouldremaina free-lancejournalistsince thiswouldallowhimmore scopeinhiswork.

Ifhewastofightcommunismthenthebattlefield wastobetheworld.He saysofthisdecision: "Itookavowtotryand makemoreconvertstothe Faithinthenext10years thanIhadmadeforcommunisminthepast20.I decidedthattheivorytowerwasnotforme.Once againImustgetoutand fight. "IfIknewfromexperiencethatCommunismwas wrong,'IPSawritermust sayso Idecidedthat Imustnot,couldnot,at suchamoment,abandonthe fighttotheCommunists. TheUnionofSouthAfrica'sreasonfor quittingtheBritishCommonwealthislikea man'smistreatinghisfamilyandthenwarningpolicenottointerfere,accordingtothe CatholicArchbishop.

ArchbishopDenisE. HurleyofDurbanhas criticisedtheNationalist government'scontention thatcriticismofitsracist policiesbyothermembers oftheCommonwealth ssas"unwarrantableinterference."

HesaidthattheUnionof SouthAfrica'sreasonfor quittingtheBritishCommonwealthislikeaman mistreatinghisfamilyand thenwarningthepolicenot tointerfere.

"Youcannotpersuadean AsianoranAfricananywhereintheworldthatthe SouthAfricancolourbaris adomesticaffairwhenhe feelsitsveryexistencean insulttohimself,"theArchbishopsaid.Continuationof racistpolicies,heindicated, willmakeSouthAfrica"a pariahnationoftheworld."

The45-year-oldprelate saidPrimeMinisterH.F. Verwoerd'swithdrawalannouncement"causedapainfulshocktoEnglish-speakingSouthAfricans."Mr. Verwoerdannouncedthe withdrawal-totakeeffect onMay31whenSouth Africabecomesarepublic7 onMarch15attheCommonwealthPrimeMinisters' ConferenceinLondon.

ArchbishopHurley,whois SouthAfrican-born,said: "Emotionsplay'abigpartin humanaffairs,soitwasinevitablethattheannouncementpfSouthAfrica'sde parturefromtheCommonwealthshouldhavecausedn painfulshocktoEnglishspeakingSouthAfricans.

MostAfrikaners(descendentsofDutchsettlers)probablyfeeldifferentlyaboutit Itmustbeabracingthought tofacetheworldalone,independent,sovereignand ridoftheoldheavyties withunhappyhistorical memories.Theseemotional reactionswillpass,and probablyforthetimebeing therewillbelittlechangein ouroutlook.

floorofthechurchiscompletelycoveredbytiles. Furnishingsincludethree altars,abaldichino,abaptismalfontandhand carvedaltarrails.The pewsareofpolishedmerantiwood.Safeswillbe builtintothesacristy,baptistryandsanctuary.

Thesimplicityofthemassivesheerlinedtowerwhich hasa30ft.glasscrossincorporatedintothewall facingLakeMonger,anda frontentrancethroughthe baseofthetower,provides averyimposingaspect.

SpeciallycastStationsof TheCrossinRomandesign havebeeninstalled.Afeatureofthewrought-iron workisthefulllengthgates fittedtothebaptistryand thepulpitwhichhasbeen designedtoblendintothe settingoftheSinctuary.The lightingintheSanctuary isconcealedinthemain archwhichdividesthat areafromtheNave.During thedaytheAltarand10ft. Crucifixaboveisilluminatedbyanarrowvertical stainedglasswindoweither side. AnelectricMassbellis

installedintheexteriorof thefrontporchandconnectedtothepriest'ssacristy,fromwhereabuzzeris connectedtothealtarboys' sacristy.

Thetoiletblock,whichis fittedwithwashbasinsand silentsuites,isaccessible fromthenaveaswellasthe exteriorandattachedto thebuilding.Itisdesigned toblendwiththeappearanceoftheChurchrather thandetract,whichisso oftenthecase.

Allfurnishingsincluding thehandcarvedworkwere carriedoutatMr.Costello's factory.

Thecrowd gatheredtogetheragainat midnightforaparty,dancingandsupper. Sundaymorningsawcars goingtobothSafetyBay andRockinghamforchurch. Swimmingagainwasinorderduringthemorning. Cleaningupwasfollowed byafternoontea,whereupon atiredcrowdmadetheir waybacktoPerth,voting itagoodweekend.

Onceeveryonejoinedintotheswingofthingsa fewgameswereplayed (there'snodoubtJoand Mitchhavethebiggest mouths,swallowinganappleinonegulp).Songswere sungbyJoe,Angelloand Virginiawiththegroup,a littlereluctantlyjoiningin thechoruses.Couplesthen dancedonthepatiodisregardingthelossofshoe leather.

Consideringtheenormous amountofsteak,rollsand saladconsumed,itistobe wonderedwhetheranyone hadteabeforehand.Next morning,soweheard, doctorjustmanagedtorake upafewmeagresausages forbreakfast,buthisoffer toholdanotherbarbecuein thefuturestillstandsMany thanksindeedtoDr.and Mrs.Hansberry.
