Since1932Australian andNewZealandRedemptoristshavebeenlabouringinthePhilippines, wheretheynowhave threefoundations,Manila, LipaandLegaspi.

TheirgreatNovena ChurchofOurLadyof PerpetualSuccourat Manila,where80,000flock eachWednesdaytoattend thedevotions,isknown throughouttheworld,but theFathers'principal workisintheremote barrioregions,wherethey arecontinuallyengagedin givingmissions.

Thecircumstancesin whichtheylabourthere bearastrikingresemblancetothoseinwhich St.Alphonsusandthefirst RedemptoristsgavemissionsinNaplesover200 yearsago.

Thegrowingnumbersof Filipinovocationsmeansa greaterextensionofthis essentialRedemptoristic work.BesidesthreeFilipinostudents,St.Mary's hasthreefromSingapore andMalaya.wherethe FathersfromAustralia havetwoflourishingfoundationsatSingaporeand Ipoh.

SINCEtherecentdisastrousbushfireat DwellingupthepeopleofWesternAustralia havebeenmostgeneroustothemanyappealsmade toassisttherehabilitationofthoseunfortunate enoughtoloseall.

Manyofthefirevictimsarestillinapositionof insecurityasfinanceisalmostimpossibleforrebuildingandsomeappeals,althoughgenerously respondedto,havehadtobesharedwithresidents ofothercentreswhichhavesincebeenravagedby fire,cycloneorflood.

Realisingthenecessityofimmediaterelieffor thepeopleofthistown,theMetropolitanBranch oftheCatholicMen'sLeaguehasdecidedtokeep thefundforDwellingupFireVictimsopenuntilat leastApril4.

Themanypeoplehavebeensogeneroustothis appealareassuredthatdonationshavebeenplaced tothebestadvantage,andthosethathavenotbeen acknowledgedwillreceivealetterofthankssoon.

OnWednesday,January 24,atSt.Anne'sNursing Home,Mt.Lawley,alifeof self-sacrificeandserviceto humanitywasbroughttoa closebythedeathofSister M.JosephMcNamara,ConventofMercy,Victoria Square,Perth.

ThelateSisterM.Joseph wasaLimerickladyand cameofaverydevout Catholicfamilywhichhas fumishedtheChurchwith manyzealousmembersat homeandabroad.Five sistersvolunteeredtowork forGodasSistersof MercyinWesternAustralia, threeofwhompredeceased SisterM.Joseph.He..eldest sister,SisterM.Ceciliawas amongthatzealousbandof sixwhoin1897weresent forthfromtheparenthouse atVictoriaSquare,Perth toformthenucleusofan independentcommunityof SistersintheSouthWest. ThefollowingyearSister M.Josephandhersister SisterM.Patrickarrived fromEiretojointhatheroic sextetanditisinteresting tonotetheywerethefirst postulantstoenterBunbury ConventofMercy.Later theywerefollowedbytwo othersistersSisterM.AugustineandSisterM. Alacoquethelatterbeinga memberofthepresentDardanupCommunity.Another sister-MotherM.Berchmansisamemberofthe MercyCommunity,Castletownbere,Cork,Eire.

Whileblessedwithaversatileabilityshewasabove allaprayerfulreligious. Neverwasherspiritof p.'ayermoreexemplified thanduringtheyearsof failinghealthwhichprecededherdeath.Tothose whoknewhereintimately SisterM.Joseph'slovefor theHolyMasswasalively inspirationandfruitful sourceofedification.She hasleftbehindheramemoryofunselfishdevotion, bornofanaturalability combinedwithaburning zealforGod'sgloryand thegoodofsouls. May wetrustsheisalreadyin possessionoftheVision Splendidforwhichhersoul hasyearnedthroughthelong yearsofherapostoliclabours.

OnFliclaymorningthe remainswereremovedto theConventChapel,VictoriaSquareandarepresentativecongregationof everysectionofthecommunityfilledtheConvent ChapelwhenaSolemn RequiemMasswascelebratedbyRt.Rev.MonsignorHogan-preparatorytothefinalobsequies. Thesingingwasbeautifully renderedbytheSisters' Choirthesombrecadences oftheMassvibrating throughthesilenceofa tensegathering. At11a.m.thefuneral cortegemovedofffromthe Conventgatesandthelast riteswereperformedbyRt. Rev.MonsignorHoganin theKarrakattaCemetery wherethemortalremainsof SisterM.Josephwerelaid torestamongthepioneer Sisterswhoblazedthe trailofreligiouseducation intheWest.RIP.

AustralianY.C.W.CalledOnTo HelpSpreadMovementInAsia

InColombolastmonththeInternational Y.C.W.concludedatrainingcourseforregionalleadersfromIndia,Ceylon,Pakistan andMalaya.Severalpriestsalsoattended tolearnmoreabouttheY.C.W.

Amongtheorganisersof thisfirstinternational trainingcourseheldinAsia wastheAustralianY.C.W. extensionworkerMr.Bernie Docherty whopassed throughPerthafewmonths ago.Bernieisatpresent inColombobutwillsoon begoing'ontocontinue trainingladsinthelay apostolateinIndiabeginningthismonthinMadras. Leaderoftherecent trainingcoursewasMr. HideoInohara,aJapanese whorepresentsAsiaonthe InternationalCouncilofthe Y.C.W.Theprincipalecclesiasticalassistantwas Fr.StanislausFernando O.M.I.andtheArchbishop ofColombosenteight prieststobet:ainedthrough thecourseinthemethods oftheY.C.W.apostolate.

Duringdiscussionsessionstheleaderssetoutto discoverwhatweretheir responsibilitiesasChristians intheirownAsiansurroundingsthroughtheir localleaders'groupsand regionalexecutives.The mainconclusionofthese discussionswasthatAsiais inastateofrevolution. Everythingonwhichthe socialstructuresofpastwas basedisnowlikelytochange rapidly-thecastesystem,thedivisionbrought aboutbymanydialects,the existenceofprivilegedclasses.Whilethisrevolution istakingplacetheYoung ChristianWorkers'Movementhasagreatroleto playinstressingthevalue ofeachindividualhuman personandinmanyother waysgivingaChristianlead totheyoungpeoplewhose destinyitistoshapethe futurecivilisationthatmust eme:geinSouthEastAsian countries.Thereissolid groundforhopeinthefact thatYoungAsianworkers arecriticalbutopenminded andshowawealthofsincerityandgenerosity.

Thecoursewhichlasted awholemonthalsoledthe participantstodiscoverthe needfortheY.C.W.tocooperatewithadultChristian movementsandstudentsorganisations. Wherethey werenotinexistenceitwas aresponsibilityofthe Y.C.W.itselftopromote

them.AlsowhiletheY.C.W. itselfcouldnottakepartin politicalactivityitwasseen tobetheresponsibilityof leaderstoengagethemselves inpoliticalandtradeunion affairsontheirownindividualinitiative,inspiredbythe loveofChristtoChristianise alltemporalinstitutions thechanginglifeoftheir countries.

Commentingonthisnews fromCeylonRev.J.O'Brien thePerthdiocesanchaplain saidthattheY.C.W.inAustraliacoulddoagreatdeal inAsiabysendingladslike BernieDochertytohelp trainAsianleaders. At3.30,immediatelyafter theopening,asolemnHigh 'Masswillbecelebratedin thepresenceoftheArchbishop.Allformerparishionersandfriendsareinvitedtoattendtheceremony. Givingalonedoesnotprovelove;ratherlovemanifestsitselfingiving.

THEJEWS,accordingtoMaimonidies,reckoned eightdegreesofgiving.Thefirstwastogive,but withreluctanceandregret.Thesecondwasto givecheerfully,butnotinproportiontotheneedsof thepoor.Thethirdwastogiveproportionatelytothe totheneedsofthepoor,butonlyaftersolicitationand requestonthepartofthepoor.Thefourthwastogive unsoughtandunsolicited,butputtingthegiftinthe handofthereceiverinthepresenceofothers,thus excitinginthepoorasenseofshame.Thefifthwasto giveinsuchawaythatthepoorwouldknowwhogave tothem,butwithoutthegiverknowingit-suchwas thecasewhenmoneywouldbefoldedinthecornersof thecloak,sothatthepoorwhopassedbymighttakeit unperceived.Thesixthwastogiveinsuchawaythat thosewhoreceivedthegiftneverknewthegiver-this wasthecasewhenanintermediarywasusedtosend moneytothehouseofthepoor.Theseventhwasto givebothunknowingandunknown,likethosepersons whodepositedtheiralmsinapoor-boxfromwhichthe poorweresuppliedwithoutanyostentationorobservation.Theeighth,andthemostnobleofalltheways, wastoanticipatekindnessbypreventingpoverty-for example,bypayingthedebtsofanother,findinghim ajob,educatinghimsothatheisabletoobtaina livelihoodwithoutholdingoutanemptyhandin beggary.

"VaticanCitydidnotgrantpassportsforemigration, andtheso-calledVaticanpassportofEichmannispure fantasy,"saysthearticleinCiviltaCattolica,thefortnightlypublicationoftheItalianJesuits.

WrittenbyFatherSalvatoreLener,thearticlediscloseshithertounpublishedinformationonCatholic assistancetoJewsduringtheNazioccupationofItaly. Thisinformationisdrawnlargelyfromrecordsleftby FatherAntonioWeber,S.A.C.,aPallottinepriestwho wasoneofthedirectorsoftheVatican'seffortfor refugees.

Atotalof1,127JewsweredeportedfromRomefor concentrationcamps,thearticleestimates,andonly14 ofthesereturned.

ThenumberofJews"eliminated"bytheGestapoin thewholeofItalyissetatabouteightthousand. Butagainstthisportraitoftragedyarestatisticsof JewswhomtheChurchwasabletoprotectagainst persecution.ConventsofnunsthroughoutItalyhid 2,275Jews,andanother992foundsanctuaryinmonasteriesandparishrectories.

"Thesameconditionswhichprevailedintheearly daysoftheChurcharestilltobefoundinmanyareas whichhavebeenevangelisedbymissionaries;orat leasttheirpeoplessufferdisadvantageswhichhadto belefttoafuturegenerationtofaceandremedy.For thatreasonitisimperativethatthelaity'shouldingreat numbersentertheserriedranksofCatholicAction,and thusco-operategenerously,earnestlyanddiligently withtheHierarchyinpromotingtheapostolate.The workofcatechistsisassuredlynecessary(andwedesire torenderthemduepraise);yetnolessnecessaryisthe industryandskillofthosewhooutofpurecharityare readytohelpgratuitouslytheministersofGodinthe performanceoftheirduties.

TheAustralianofficeofthePontificalMissionSocieties hasrepeatedlyendeavouredtobringthisimportant apostolatetothemindsandheartsoftheAustralian people.AninvitationhasbeenextendedtoallAustralianCatholicstoconsiderwhethertheyhavethe talents,therequisites,giftsand,aboveall,thegenerosity ofhearttoserveOurDivineLordinthisway.

Inthepasttherehasbeenaseriousdelayinthe administrativeside.Thishasresultedinseveralpeople losinginterest.Forquitesometimethishasbeena graveconcernbothtotheBishops,thedirectorsof Propagationandallconcerned.Whensuchgenerous soulsmakeoffersofthiskindtheremustbeeffective yetstreamlinedefficiency.Ifpeoplevolunteer,then theyshouldbetoldeitherthatthereisaplaceforthem orthatatthemomentinthemissionfieldsaround Australiatheirparticularskillcannotbeultilised.

Further,itshouldbeunderstoodclearlythatevery applicantmustmeetthestandardsoftheBishopsin respecttoage,health.characterand,aboveall,intheir personalspirituallife.Afterall,nobodyknowsany missionareabetterthantheBishopappointedbythe HolySee.InrespecttothemissionsadjacenttoAustralia,andthesearethemissionswherehelpisneeded sourgently,theBishopshavenowlaiddownasetof standards.Further,theyhaverecentlyindicatedtothe nationalofficethevarioustypesofskillsorprofessions ofwhichtheyhavedesperateneed.

Tosaveallunnecessarydelays,anypersonthinking ofvolunteeringshouldforwardarecentletterfromthe parishpriestofwhere,theyresidetoindicatethatthey areleadingthelifeofafaithfulCatholiclayperson. Thisisessential.Nobodycanhopetogotothemissions toparticipateinmissionaryworkevenindirectlyunless hisownlifeisgoingtobeanexample.Thepeopleof missionlandslearnsomuchbyexample.

Atthemomentthegreatneedisteachers.Itwillbe saidbymanythatteachersarerequiredinAustralia. Trueenough,butwhoseneedisthegreatest-the childrenofAustraliaorthechildrenofNewGuinea? Thisisafaircriterion-wheretheneedisgreatest,there istheurgentapostolate.

HOWMANYOFUS,Iwonder,haveeverappliedthese meaningfulwr,rdsofOurLordintheSermononthe Mounttoourownsituation?Evenasuperficialexamina'ionofconscience,Iamafraid,wouldembarrassmost ofus.Thegreatcommandmentoftheloveofour brotherforthesakeofChristshouldautomatically promptustoprepareourselvesproperlytoparticipate inChrist'sgreatactionoftheMassbyremovingwhateverisforeigninourlivestothatcommandment.That iswhyHolyMotherChurchhelpsustomakethatpreparationinthewordsoftheMassitself.

"Thecupofblessingthatwebless,isitnotthesharing oftheBloodofChrist?Andthebreadthatwebreak, isitnotthepartakingoftheBodyoftheLord?Because thebreadisone,wethoughmany,areonebody,allof uswhopartakeoftheonebread"(ICor.10:16-17).

Inthispassage.St.Paulmakesitquiteclearthatwe aremadeonebyjoininginthereceptionofthesame HeavenlyFood.Butwemustbeoneevenbeforethat. ThetrulyChristianspiritofloveofneighbourmust uniteuseveninmakingourofferingattheMasswhich istobejoinedtoandbecometheofferingofChrist Himself.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION

THISCHARITYwhichistheessenceofChristianity mustbemuchmorethantheemotionoflove.Itmust bearfruitinaction.Theforgivenessofoffencesagainstourneighbourisassumedbeforewedareto approachthealtarofGod.Ifit hasnotbeenperfectlyachieved, theMassitselfiscalculatedtoaccomplishitinour hearts.And,finally,thereceptionoftheSacramentof UnityintheEucharistismeanttosolidifytheproper sentimentsinregardtotruecharity.

IthasbeensaidthatthereisnoMasswithoutHolyCommunion.Itseemsequallylogicaltosaythatthere isnottrueCommunionwithoutcharity.OurCommunionsaremosthyprocriticaliftheyarenotfollowedby thepracticalapplicationoffraternalcharity.

Sotheremustbecharitybeforeandcharityafter, andagreatercharityafterthanbefore.St.John,the greatapostleoflove,tellsusthathewhodoesnotlove hisbrotherwhomhecansee,cannotclaimtoloveGod Whomhecannotsee.

ThustheMassbecomesforusthegreatinstrument ofcharity,convincingandconvertingustothepractice ofthatvirtuewhichmostmakesmenreflectChrist.

Itisnowbecomingevident thatthesepseudo-Christian schoolsarebecomingamenacetoCatholicinterestsin education,andcanbring seriousconsequences.

Queen'sVisitToPopeAndOfficial LiaisonAppointmentCriticised

NFLUENTIAL"LowChurch"Anglicanshaveopenly IcriticisedtheofficialappointmentofanAnglican representativetotheHolySee'sSecretariatforPromotingChristianUnity.

LordHillsborough,presidentoftheEvangelical AlliancesaidtheappointmentofCanonBernardPawley asofficialAnglicancontactwiththeVaticangroup wouldirritatealargenumberofpeople.

Othersthinkthatthegovernmentwilltakeoversome schoolsandwillneutralisetherestsothattheywillbe Christianinnameonly.

Socialist,ultra-nationalistandMoslemmotivesare intermingledintheofficialattitudetowardsChristian schoolsinEgypt,thesouthernprovinceofPresident GamalAbdelNasser'sUnitedArabRepublic.InSyria, thenorthernprovince,alsimilarattitudeexists,butit is-sofar-lessrigid.

Already,ChristianschoolsinEgypthavehadtogive upsomeoftheirChristiancharacter.Tosomedegree theyhavebeentakenoverbyMoslemeducation.

NoschoolforChristiansonlyisallowedinEgypt. EveryChristianschoolmustacceptMoslemaswellas Christianpupils.Infact,manyMoslemparentswant theirchildrentobeeducatedintheChristianschools. FortheseMoslempupilsMoslemreligiousinstruction byagovernment-approvedteachermustbeprovided.

ToChristianpupilsaswellastoMoslems,history. socialstudiesandtheArabiclanguagemustbetaught byArabteachersonly,alsogovernmentapproved. TheseareoftenlikelytobeMoslems.

Thetextbooksassignedbythegovernmentforall pupilsinthesesubjectsareMoslemintoneandsometimesdirectlyanti-Christian.Theyquoteexamplesand textsfromtheKoran,theMoslemholybook.They exaltIslamandgiveanunfavourableandunfair accountofChristiandevelopment.

InChristianprimaryschoolstheteachersareallArab citizens,mostlyCopticChristians. TheChristian secondaryschoolshavebeendevelopedbyforeignmissionariesandstilldependlargelyonthem.Thisisa naturalcondition.Justasothersectionsofthepopulationstillneedspecialistsfromabroad,theChristian bodyinEgyptisnotyetself-sufficientintrained secondaryteachers.

Thegovernmentintention,however,isadmittedlyto putArabteachersinplaceofmissionaryteachers,even ifitmeansputtingMoslemsinchargeofChristian schools.

In1963everyChristian(orotherprivate)schoolin theUnitedArabRepublicmusthaveState-approved Arabcitizensasprincipalandvice-principal.For Christianschoolstheywould"notnecessarilybeChristians,"theMinisterofEducationtoldme.AnArabfrom anothercountry,suchasLebanonorPalestine,would notdo. By1963;85per"centoftheteachingstaffinChristian (andotherprivate)schoolsmustbeArabsapproved bythegovernment. Theforeignmissionaryteachers,likeallother

Thisworkpermitregulationhasaddedtothefeeling ofinsecurityalreadyfeltbyeverymissionaryteacher.

ThegovernmentstruckanominousblowatChristian educationrecentlybytakingovertheschoolofSt. AnthonytheGreatinKolali,aworking-classsection ofCairo.Thisschool,conductedbytheJesuits.had800 pupils,athirdofwhomwereCatholics,athirdOrthodox andathirdMoslems.

ItwastakenovertemporarilylastAprilanddefinitely lastDecember-threedaysbeforeChristmas.The reasonsgivenwerethattheschooladministrationwas notsufficientlynationalistic,thatitcreatedill-feeling betweenMoslemsandChristiansandproselytised OrthodoxCopts.

NotonenewspaperinCairopublishedthefactthat thislargeschoolhadbeenseized.Thepressisnotfree. Allthedailynewspapers,exceptoneFrench-language paper,havebeentakenoverbythegovernment's NationalUnion.

SometimeagoaChurchdocumentaddressedto Christiansexplainedthatparents'rightsineducation comepriortothoseoftheState.Theofficialcensor suppressedthatpassage.
