WhenPresidentCosgraveapproached thereviewfield,thebandplayed"The Soldier'sSong,"andthetricolourwas unfurled.Addressingthetroopson theoccasion,PresidentCosgrave,in thecourseofhisoration,saidthey weremettohonourthememoryofone ofIreland'snoblestsoldiersons.Wolfe Tonediedinprison126yearsago,but theseedhesowedduringhisshortcareerhadbornefruitintheirtime.

"Theapostleshipofunity,"saidthe President,"whichTonepreachedisas necessaryto-clayasitwasacentury ago.
"Weareasmallcountry,relatively muchsmallerto-daythanthen,andwe haveneedofeverycitizeninthetask ofrebuildingournation.Thelines ofdivisionwhichthenobtainedhave happilyalmostentirelydisappeared throughthree-fourthsoftheisland. Thataremnantstillexistsisdueto prejudicedeliberatelyfosteredforthe perpetuationofdivision,and,asdisciplesofWolfeTone,itisourworkto removetheseprejudices.

HiswideknowledgeofIreland'seconomicconditions,hispoliticalinsight,his clearstrategy,hisundyingdevotionto hiscountry,hisearlydeathinharness rendersthesimilaritymorepronounced.
LikeCollins,hewasaconstructive andpracticalstatesman:likeCollins,he wascutoffandinhispiimeandat thebeginningofhiswork.Unlike Collins,heneverhadthehappinessof seeinghislife'sworkadvancedonthe pathofsuccess.HediedwhenIrelandlaybleedingandbrokenwith theheart-breakofrepeatedfailure heavyuponhim.Collinswasspared toseetheprinciplesofdemocratic libertyvindicated,toseetheArmyof theforeignerreplacedbytheArmyof Irelandandtolookdownavistafutureofprogresstowardsnationalreconstructionandnationalunitywhiels weretheidealsofTone.

LikeCollins,Tonehadnoillusions. HerepeatedtimeandagainthatIrelandunaidedcouldnotbeatherenemybyforceofarms.Hefacedfacts. evenasCollinsfacedfacts.And,that wasthelessonwhichtheyinIreland sadlyneededtolearn.Theywere somewhatpronetoadoptthepolicy
oftheostrich-toburytheirheadsin thesandwhentheycameupagainst unpleasantfacts.Theywerecalled uponatthisstagenotsomuchtodie forIrelandastoliveforIreland. Whentheywerecalledupontpface theformerrisktheydidit.Letthem notbefoundwantingnowintheless heroic,butmoredifficultduty.Let theindependentspiritandindimitable willofTonecheerandencouragethem inthattask.
Letthemleavetoothersthosewanderingsintotheimpracticalwhich pleasethemindsofdoctrinaires,and bendthemselvestopracticalwork whichlaytotheirhand.Thus,and thusonly,couldtheyclaimtobetrue disciplesofthegospelofunitedand untiringeffortwhichTonepreached.
ANTI-TREATYDISPLAY. Theorationatthegravesidewasde liveredbyMr.BrianO'Higgins,T.D. whosaidmoreglorioustothemwas WolfeToneinthelonelinessofthe iambthanallthedeadkingsandemperorsofthisgallantnation,nomatterwhatcreedtheyprofessedorto whatclasstheybelonged.Hestrove andfoughtfortheirfreedomwithall thestrengthandvigourofhisgreat andunselfishlife.
IneverygenerationsinceTonethe youngmenofhiscountryingreater orsmallernumbershadbeenfound whoweregreatenoughandunselfish enoughintheirheartsandtheirminds tokeepthewordsofToneringingin theirearsandtofollowhisexample andgothroughacesspoolofcalumniations,poverty,theproperhellscalled prisons,thebitternessofexile,aye,and withbrightheartsandflashingeyes meettheirdeathonthescaffoldorbeforethefiringsquad.
Intheirgeneration,morethanany othersinceTone,hadtheunquestionableloyaltytotheidealofTonebeen mademanifestnotalonebymen,but bywomenandchildren,bytheaged, thefrailandtheweakaswellasby theyoungandstrong.Neverinthe historyofstrugglingnationshadsuch afightbeenwagedasthefightthey hadinIrelandforthelasteightyears. Afterthemilitarydemonstration wasover,anumberofsoldierscame uptoBodenstownChurchyard,and wereinterestedspectatorsoftheAntiTreatyproceedings.
AftertheusualmeetinginO'Connellstretaprocession,headedbyMadame GonneMacBrideandMrs.Despard. carryingtwolaurelwreaths,marched tothesiteoftheprojectedWolfeTone memorialattheheadofGrafton-street, wherethewreathswereaffied.MadameMacBridesaidshewastherein 1898whenthefoundationstonewas laid.Themonumenthadnotyetbeenerected,andneverwouldbe erectedtillthefullfreedomofIreland hadbeenachievedbytheestablish men::oftheIrishRepubliss

TheconditionsofCatholicsandNationalistsunderBelfastGovernment wasinsomerespectsworsethanthat oftheirco-religionistsintheperiodbeforeCatholicEmancipation.Inthose earlierdaysProtestants,manyoflight andleading,wereprominentamongst thesupportersoftheCatholicclaims, buttheBelfastProtestantofto-day whowoulddareprofesssympathywith hisCatholicfellow-countrymanmust hepreparedforsocialostracism,com mercialruin,orphysicalviolence.

TheChurchandUnity "LoveoneanotherasIhavelovedyou-isacommandmentwhichChrist gavetohisApostlesandDisciples.ItwasbythespiritoflovethatHe wouldunitethemandthebrethren.ObeyingthatinjunctionoftheMaster theywentforthafterthedayofPentecosttopreachandtoteachHisGospeltotheworldofmen.Intheirvariousactivities,andtheirviscissitudes thewordsoftheMasterwerethevitalforcethatgavelife,strengthand formtotheirworkinshapingtheInfantChristianChurch.Andright throughtheirlivesthefaithfulTwelveadheredwithawonderfulconsistence tothisgreatandsalutaryvirtue.ThestoryoftheInfantChurchisoneof delightfulexcellenceinthelovewhichitsmembershadoneforanother.So muchsothatthosewhowerenotofthebrethrenhadcausetoremark''See howtheseChristiansloveoneanother."Butthatwasinthedeardays whenLovewasstrongintheChristianfamilyandbeforethe evildemonsofPride,Jealousy,PresumptionandTreasoncame alongasinterlopersandspreaddiscord,dissensionandschismamongst thebrethrenandsunderedintowarringfragmentstheChristian Church.TheoncemightyEasternChurchhasbeensplinteredbyschismjust astheWesternChurchhasbeentornapartbytheprideandpassionaterebellionoftheso-calledreformersofthe16thcentury.Schismconnotesrebellion,andrebellioneventuallyendsinanarchy.Amoment'sreflectionon thestateofreligionto-daymustleadareflectingmindtoshrinkfromcontempatingthefutureofHumanSociety.Forthepowersofsecularismare graduallygatheringtheirforcesandarepreparingtochallengetheinfluence andstrengthofChristianity.ThechampionsoftheChristianIdealarealreadyalarmedattheprogresswhichMaterialismismakingandtheyareaware thatunlessthedissensionswithinChristendomaremendedChristianitywillbe attackedbyagenciesmoresinisteranddaringthanthoseemployedbyMoslemhatredinthedaysofMoslemsupremacy.
Withinthelastthirtyyearseffortshavebeenmadetobringaboutthat desiredunionwhichshouldbetheurgeofeveryprofessingChristianto-day. EveryreasonableandfriendlyeffortonthepartofdissentingChristians madeforunityshouldbeviewedbyCatholicswiththegreatestcharity.It isinthespiritofcharitythe"conversations"werebegunbyCardinalMercier withrepresentativesoftheAnglicanChurchnotverylongago,inthehope thatsomepracticalschemecouldbeshapedtorestoretheChurchofEnglandtounitywiththeSeeofPeter.TheunhappydivisionsintheChristian worldmovedthelateHolyFatherPiusIX.,in1869,toinviteinthebroadestspiritofcharityrthebishopsoftheChurchesoftheOrientalRitenot incommunionwiththeApostalicseeand"allProtestantsandothernonCatholics"toendtheexistingschism.ThePope'scharitywasmisunderstoodandinEnglanditprovokedastormofangrycriticism.TheGreek Churchwouldnotaccepttheinvitation.Politicalinfluencehadadirecting handintheobjectionofthePatriarchs.Therewasonenotableexceptionto theobjectorsinEngland.ItwastheAnglicanCanonSelwyn.Hisnoble lettertotheHolyFatherisabeautifulexampleofthatChristianspirit whichshouldpervadetheheartsofallwhoarestrivingforpeaceandunity. withinthemassof-Christianity.
Since1869manychangeshavebeenwroughtintheconditionofthe EasternChurch.TheRussianOrthodoxChurchhassufferedmuchunder thenewregimeandisnowonlytheshadowofwhatitwasundertheCzar. ThePatriarchofConstantinopleisunderthethumboftheTurkandmust doasheistoldbyhisMoslemmaster.TheOrthodoxChurchintheBalkans isdividedandowesnoallegiancetotheGreekPatriarch.Disunionis markedallovertheEasternChurch-vet,notwithstanding,itclingstoits ancientRiteandhaspreservedtoagreatextentthebodyofteachingand traditioncurrentinthetimesofAthanasiusandChrysostom.Acalltothe EasternChurchnotincommunionwiththeHolySeemadeinthesame spiritwhichpromptedtheinvitationofPopePiusIX.in1869might.ifmade to-day,bemoregenerouslyreceived.
HisAnglicanGraceofPerth,speakinginhisCathedralonarecentSunday,whenexplaininghisreasonsforinvitingtheGreekArchbishoptotake partintheeveningservicetoldhiscongregationthattherehadalwaysbeen divisionbetweentheChurchesofRomeandGreeceandthattherelationshipbetweentheChurchofEnglandandtheGreekChurchwasarelationshiphornofagreatdealofignoranceoneoftheother.Heseemedtoinfer thattherearegreaterbondsofbeliefanddoctrinebetweenthemtobind theminunitythantherearebetweentheGreekChurchandtheCatholic Church.Itisnotanhistoricalfactthattherehasalwaysbeendivision betweentheGreekChurchandtheRomanChurch.
Itis,wethink,amisreadingofthefactsofhistorytostatethatthere wasdivisionbetweenthetwoChurchesuntiltheschismoftheUsurperPhotius.ThatschismunfortunatelypavedthewayfortheschismofCelurlarius,
whichseparatedtheEasternChurchfromtheSeeofRomeandwhichhas keptitinschismeversince.HisGraceclaimsConstantine,whofounded theByzantineEmpire,asanEnglishmanprobablybornatYork.Thattoo isamisreadingofhistorybyeitherhisAnglicanGraceorthecompilerof theinformationfromwhichhehasdrawnhisfactsofEasternChurch history.ConstantinewasborninServiaandonlywenttoEnglandwhena youngm4n,whenBritainwasunderRomanrule.ThattheBishopofRome andtheBishopofByzantiumquarrelledastowhowasthegreaterisa stretchingofthetruth.ThePrimacyofRomewasadmittedbytheSecond CouncilofConstantinople-thePatriarchrankedsecondinauthoritytothe Pope.ItremainedcertainlyforthepresumptionofthePatriarchCelurlariusaboutthebeginningofthe11thcenturytochallengetheprimacyof thePopeofRomeandtoclaimtheindependenceoftheGreekChurch. ThereisaparallelbetweenthepresumptionofthatschismaticandthepresumptionofHenrytheEighth-bothwhentheycouldn'thavetheirownway wentinopenrebellionagainstRome.Thereisinthatregardsomebondof unionbetweentheChurchofEnglandandtheEasternChurchin schism-thebondthatexistsbetweentwopersonsinaliketrouble.Wedon'tquiteunderstandhisAnglicanGrace'sreferenceto theNiceneCreed.Doeshewishtoalteritinkeepingwiththe beliefoftheEasternSchismaticChurch.Weknowthatforquite alongwhiletherehasbeenaleaningonthepartofasectionoftheChurch ofEnglandtowardstheSchismaticChurchesoftheEast.Italsohada leaningtowardstheschismaticOldCatholicChurch.ItleanedinthedirectionoftheChurchesnotinunionwithRomebutwhichhadtheApostolicsuccessionoravalidhierarchyandpriesthood.Sofartheovertures ofthoseanxioussoulsamongstourseparatedbrethrenwhohavebeen seekingunitywiththeEasternandOldCatholicChurcheshave metwithpoorencouragement. Thelittlecourtesiesbetween hisAnglicanGraceofPerthandthevisitingGreekArchbishop havenovalueasindicatorsofthatnearerapproachtotheGreekChurch whichhisGracewould,seemtodesire.IfhisAnglicanGraceofPerthhad invitedtheGreekArchbishoptotakethemorningserviceathisCathedral andiftheGreekArchbishophadcelebratedtheMassaccordingtotheByzantineRiteattheAnglicanaltarwearemuchafraidhewouldhitProtestantisminavulnerableplaceandassuredlytherewouldbeaprotestfromthe lowandbroadelementsofProtestantisminthecongregationwhoclingto thethirty-ninearticles. ButhisAnglicanGracehadthecaution nottodothat. HisGreekGracemerelyattendedtheevening serviceandimpartedthebenediction. Inlikemannerwefindthe GreekArchbishopattheceremonyofblessingandlayingthefoundation stoneofthenewGreekChurchinvitingaMinisteroftheAnglicanChurch toreadaprayerforChristianunity.WeareawarethatthePatriarchof ConstantinoplesentadelegationtotheLambethConferencetoconsultwith theAnglicanBishopsonthequestionoftheunionoftheChurchofEnglandwiththeEasternChurch.butwhathasbeengainedbythat? Therehavebeenmanyevidencesof arenewedvigourinthemonasticinstitutionsofBavaria(saysthe"IrishCatholic").Thishasbeenparticularly noticeableinthecaseofthePremonstratensians.AnarticlerecentlywrittenbyDr.WaltherRothescomments onthisdevelopmentasfollows:-"It isremarkablethattheoneremnantof thecommunistictidewhichflooded GermanyaftertheWarandtheRevolutionistheChristianCommunism which,byself-mortification,self-gov- ernment,andcharity,isapowerfulinfluenceforgood.InBavaria,forexample,thePremonstratensians,foundedin1120atPremontreinFranceby St.Norbert,asanorganisationofCanonsregularlyunitedforacommonlife, pastoralcare,andscientificstudy,alreadyhavehadamarvellousnewde velopment.Theyreturnedin1923 totheiroldhomeatSpeinshart,near KemnathintheUpperPalatinate,and now,in1924,theyalsohavecorre againintopossessionoftheiroldpro perty,thefamousAbbeyofWindsheira, nearStraubing.And,finally,they haveacquiredthelargestofthemediaevalestablishmentswhichtheyformerlymaintainedinGermany,theAbbeyofRoggenburg,nearNeu-Ulm, iormerlya'Reichsunmittelbar"-i.e., anabbeysubjectdirectlytotheEmperor.TheAbbey,withitshuge buildings,itsoldchurch,andrichestates,isofthegreatestimportancefor thefurtherdevelopmentofthegreat PremonstratensianOrder."Itiswith satisfactionthatitcanberecorded thattheseproperties,whichforcen turieshavebeenalienatedfromtheir ecclesiasticalpurposes,havebeengivenbacktotheirrightfulowners,and therebyrestoredtothe11S23forwhich theywereestablished700yearsago. TowhomquothFatherBernard:"Of coursenot!Youcan'texpectusto gotoyouforaspuriousarticlewhen ehavetherealthing!"Fundamen. lly,thoughperhapsexpressedless luntly,istheCatholic'sattitudein thepresentmatter.Wearetoldin theBiblethatthereis"OneLord,one faith.onebaptism"(Eph.iv,5).The ecclesiasticalaxiom-lexorandi,lex credendi(theruleforprayingisthe ruleforbelieving)-cutsbothways.If theformofprayerandworshipreveals themannerofourbelief,so,too,does theruleofourfaithdefinethecharacterofourprayerandworship.The objectionatthebeginningofthisarticleproceedsfromasourcedeeper thanmistakenviewsmerelyaboutwor ship.Indifferentismastoformsof worshipspringsfromlatitudinarian viewsastobeliefs.If"onereligion isasgoodasanother,"whynotregard oneformofworship,also,asgoodas another?Yetanythinkingman,recognisinghisabsolutedependence upontheGodWhogavehimbeing, andinWhomhelives,andmoves,and is(Actsxvii,28),mustacknowledge thattheDivineMind,Truthitself, mustbethelawofhisownmindand conduct,andhencethatreligipns whichareopposedtoeachothercannotbeequallyacceptabletoGod.For inHimtherecanbenocontradiction, "noranyshadowofchange."And worshipbeingtheoutwardexpression ofreligiousbelief,it,too,mustconform toDivineTruth--whichisunalterably one,andnotmanyandconflicting. Thus,forinstance,itcannotbeequal- lypleasingtoGodthatIshouldrefusetoadoreChristreallyandsubstantiallypresentintheEucharist,as toadoreHim.ForifHebepresent, IamdaringtorefuseHimworshipdue.Correspondingly,iftheCatholicbeinerror,andtheGod-Manbe absentfromtheEucharist,thenthe Catholicisengagedinthebasestact ofidqlatrytowardsalittlebread.This lineofargumentmightbeindefinitely extended.Butlettheabovesuffice, sincetheRealEucharisticPresenceof ourLordformstheverycentreofCa. tholicworship.Itwas-ascandid Protestantwritersadmit-thevery pivotroundwhichtheProtestantreligiousrevoltintheXVIcenturymainlyturned.Hencethetearing downofconsecratedCatholicAltars forSacrifice,andthehuntingtodeath of"MassingPriests."
Perhapsthestrangestpartofthe businessisthatanyearnestnon-CatholicshouldsomuchasdesireCatholicsathisworship.Wehavealready statedtheuniqueCatholicpositionin thematter-namely,thattheonlyworshipintrinsicallypleasingtoGod istheCatholic.HenceaCatholic's attendanceatanyotherworship-besidesbeingasin-wouldbeamere sham,aphyocrisy,sincehedoesnot believeinit.Isisthissortofworship thatanon-Catholicdesiresshouldbe paidtohisGod?Inworldlymatters, weshoulddesposethepoliticaldishonestyofamanwho,whilebelonging totheConservative"Die-hards,"at- tendedabanquetinhonourofMr. RamsayMacDonald.Yetherewe areonlydealingwithoutwardexpres- sionofpoliticalbeliefs,whicheven theirholders,ifreasonable,wouldnot regardasinfalliblyright.Whereasin thesphereofreligionitisaquestionof truthsrevealedbyGod,theEternal InfallibleTruth;and,whateverthose truthsmaybe,theymust'necessarily beaboveallhumancriticism.The finiteintelligencemaynotdictateto theInfinite.
But,itmayberejoined,whydozealousmembersofyourFaithsometimesinducenon-Catholicstocome withthemtoCatholicworship?On youOpownprinciples,youCatholicsare invit.ngthemtobedisloyaltothe creedwhichtheyregardasinfallibly true?Arevounoturgingthemto goagainsttheirconscience?
Severalcommentsmustbemade here:1.ProtestantsandothernonCatholicsarequiteasoftendrawnto Catholicworshipbyinwardattraction asbyCatholicsuasion.Itiscommontohearthemremark:"Somehow, whenIgointoyourchurchesIbecome consciousofamysterious'something' therethatIdonotfindinmyo*n church."WeCatholicsknowwhat that"something"is-aMightySome- thing-thatSomethingfortheworship ofWhichourCatholicEnglishfore-
athersexpendedsomuchlabour,time, artandtreasureinraisingthosesplendidpre-Reformationcathedrals,ministers,andparishchurchesofwhichCatholicshavebeenrobbed.Besuns thatthesemagnificentstructureswere nevermeantformerePrayer-Meeting Houses. No,theywereerectedas l'alacesfortheDivineKingandLord, inHisSacramentalPresence.And thoughthatPresenceisinvisible,intangible,itstillmakesitselfspiritually teltinthepoorerCatholictemplesthat havebeensubstituted,anditisfurtherreflecteduponmanyanon-Catholicsoulbythemanifestlyunanimous faithanddevotionoftheCatholicworshippers.Noonlookercandoubtthat thisDivinePresenceintheEucharist istothemanagreedReality.Thereasonwhynon-Catholicsseekoutour churchesmayperhapsbethis:that theyfindtheresomethingthatisabsentfromtheirownworship-experienceasenseofaDivinePresencethat theydonotexperienceelsewhere.It isnottheproverbial"sensuousritual" ofthe"RomanChurch,"sodeartothe journalisticscribbler,thatexertsthe spell-northeflowers,lightsandfragrantincense,ormusic-butsomething farmoresoul-searching.And--if anything-itisfeltmoredeeplywhen onlyafewadorersaretobeseenthere insilentprayerthanwhenthemost imposingfunctionisinprogress.
2.GrantedthatsomeCatholichas broughtanon-Catholicfriendalong withhimtochurch.Ishetampering withtheman'sconscience?Onewould firstneedtoascertaintheprecisestate ofthatconscienceonthesubject.In manyacasethatstateisablank.But pre-supposinghimtopossessdefinite Protestantopinions,dothesedebar himfromsamplingCatholicworship? "Individualliberty"formsthevery foundationoftheReformedreligion.Thus,withinthepaleofoneandthe sameChurchofEnglandevenclergymenmaydenyOriginalSin,theDivinityofChrist,andtheResurrection oftheBody,etc.,withimpunity,orattheoppositeextreme-maycelebrate"Mass,"have"Benediction,"pray totheBlessedVirginandfortheDepartedSouls,etc.Everymanisfree tosuithimself.Nowthisroot-prin- cipleofIndividualLibertymust,logically,debaranon-Catholicfromholdinghisparticularselectionofdoctrines tobetheOne,Only,InfallibleTruth ofGod.TheCatholic'sattitudetowardshiscreedisessentiallydifferent. Tohim,Catholicismistheonlytrue expositionoftheGospel,andallother interpretationsofit-howeverhonestlyprofessed-arefalse.Andonthis basisheformshisconscienceasto worship.NotsotheProtestant.He isforcedbyhistheologicalposition toadmitthattheCatholicFaith,howeveruncongenialtohismodeofreligiousthought,maybetrueandits worshipconsequentlythetrueworship. isnotinapositiontodogmatise- themoreLoasquantitiesofhisown fellowProtestantsdifferfromhim.
